Vern Hensley
1919 - 2007
MOORELAND, Okla. — Vern Hensley, 88,
longtime Mooreland, Okla., resident, died
Nov. 16 in the Woodward Regional
Hospital. Funeral services were held
Monday in the Billings Funeral Home
Chapel in Woodward, Okla., with the
Rev. Mike Smith officiating. Burial was in
the Mooreland Cemetery under the
direction of the Billings Funeral Home.
Vern Hensley was born July 30, 1919, in
the Haskew Community; he was the son
of Charles Manford and Roxy Mildred
(Bailey) Hensley. He attended schools at
Freeze Out, Freedom and Mooreland. He
then went to work helping build the Fort
Supply Dam. Vern worked at the Farmers
Co-op and helped his father on the
family farm. On Sept. 15, 1939, Vern
married Corinne Syms. They made their
home south of Mooreland. For six
months, Vern worked building the
Mooreland-Freedom road. In 1943, they
moved to their present farm and ranch.
In the late 1950s, he began working for
Woodward County District I as a heavy
equipment operator. Vern and Corinne
later acquired more land north of Curtis.
He loved what he did and kept working
until the early part of this year. Vern and
Corinne were married for more than 68
years.
Vern loved to attend the National Finals
Rodeo in Las Vegas with his family. He
was supportive of family sporting events.
He and Corinne drove many miles
attending ball games. He always took
time to listen to grandchildren’s stories.
Vern always loved working in the fields.
He was a former member of the
Mooreland Lions Club and the Mooreland
Farmers Co-op Board of Directors.
He is survived by his wife, of the home;
five sons, Leland Hensley and wife Mary
Jane of Mooreland; Leroy Hensley and
wife Anna Faye of Great Bend; Lowell
Hensley and wife Barbara of Woodward;
Ray Hensley and wife Joleen and Dean
Hensley and wife Eileen, all of
Mooreland; one daughter, Leah Hepner
and husband Travis of Freedom, Okla.;
one brother, Bill Hensley and wife Liz of
Woodward; 15 grandchildren, 24 great-
grandchildren and two great-great-
grandchildren. Vern was preceded in
death by one sister, Ila LaFleur, brothers
Verlon and Robert Hensley and his
parents, Charles and Mildred Bailey
Hensley.
Memorial contributions may be made to
the Mooreland Fire Department with the
funeral home accepting the donations.

Reverend H. Paul Osborne
1914 - 2007
The Rev. H. Paul Osborne, 93, died Nov.
12. He was born in Garrison, Ky., on
Sept. 19, 1914. He was the son of Lee
and Virginia Osborne, deceased. He had
one brother, the Rev. Arthur Lee
Osborne, deceased, and a sister, Mrs.
Thomas R. Lykins of Cincinnati, Ohio,
also deceased.
Father Osborne attended grade school in
Garrison and graduated from Lewis
County High School in Vanceburg, Ky.
After accepting the vocation of the
ministry, he began his education in God's
Bible School, Cincinnati, Ohio, and
entered Kentucky Wesleyan College at
Winchester, Ky., now at Owensboro. He
received a B.A. degree, cum laude in
1938. He entered Lexington Theological
Seminary in the fall of that year, and
received a Master of Divinity degree in
1941. He was ordained in the Methodist
ministry and later was confirmed into the
Episcopal Church. He attended Virginia
Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Va.,
and completed his preparation there in
1945, and was ordained to the
priesthood on Nov. 30, 1945. He
attended Trinity University and Incarnate
Word College in San Antonio, Texas, and
received an M.A. degree in 1955.
He served churches in Kentucky and
Texas, primarily in San Antonio at St.
Paul's Episcopal Church, then moved to
Charleston, S.C. He was later called to a
church in Wichita, and then went to
Medford, Mass., and from there to
Arkansas, and completed his parish
ministry in Great Bend.
Father Osborne left the parish ministry
for a time and became a professional
fund-raising consultant. He also worked
for the United States Treasury
Department as a sales promotional
representative for the Savings Bond
Division. He married Gladys Marie Jones
May 31, 1936. They had three children,
Ann Harlan Mitchell and John Holland
Osbome of Wichita, and Thomas Lee
Osborne, deceased. They celebrated 71
years of marriage on May 31.
Father Osborne was active in church and
community work throughout his career in
the ministry. He was president of the
Ministers' Associations in Great Bend,
and San Antonio, Texas. He was elected
president of the Community Coordinating
Council in Kingsville, Texas, the Councils
of Churches in Great Bend, and the
Kansas Ecumenical Council for two
terms. He conducted the first ecumenical
service of the Holy Communion for 12
denominations, the first in the history of
Kansas.
He was a member of a number of
fraternal organizations and was founder
and first president of Sigma Delta
fraternity at Kentucky Wesleyan College,
which is now a chapter of Sigma Nu, a
national collegiate fraternity. He was a
member of Alpha Theta Ze, a national
theological seminary fraternity. He was a
member of the Masonic Order for more
than 50 years, and a member of all York
Rite Bodies.
Father Osborne is survived by his wife
Gladys, daughter Ann (Matthew), son
John (Renee), eight grandchildren and
10 great-grandchildren. A memorial has
been established at St. James Episcopal
Church.
Johanna Katherine Shumway
1919 - 2007
PRATT - Johanna Katherine Shumway,
88, died Nov. 15 at Lakewood Senior
Living of Pratt. She was born Sept. 14,
1919, at Cleveland, the daughter of
Aloyisus and Josephine (Maason) Gillen.
On Nov. 14, 1936, she married Avery C.
Shumway in Wichita. He preceded her in
death on Oct. 29, 2005.
She was a member of Sacred Heart
Catholic Church, Women of Sacred Heart
and Hutchinson Fiddlers & Pickers Club.
She is survived by one daughter, Trevlyn
and husband Lawrence Detmer of
Ellinwood; two sons, Darrell and wife
Irene Shumway of Pratt and Leon and
wife Marcia Shumway of Chickasha,
Okla.; nine grandchildren, two
stepgrandchildren, 18 great-
grandchildren, six stepgreat-
grandchildren and five great-great-
grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by her parents, her husband, a
brother, Vincent Gillen, and two sisters,
Martha Alice Ogle and Susanna Kitson.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today
and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at
Larrison Mortuary, 300 Country Club
Road, Pratt. Vigil and Rosary will be at 7
p.m. on Monday at Larrison Mortuary.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10
a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic
Church, Pratt, with the Rev. Gregory S.
LeBlanc presiding. Burial will be in Turon
Cemetery, Turon. Memorials may be
made to Sacred Heart Musical Ministry

Marie Schmitt
1913 - 2007
HOISINGTON — Marie Schmitt, 94, died
Nov. 14 at Clara Barton Hospital,
Hoisington. She was born July 2, 1913,
at Offerle, the daughter of Frederick and
Katherine Burkhart Schwarz. A
Hoisington resident since 2000, moving
from Dodge City, she worked at
Duckwalls in Kinsley, and at Fergerson’s
Furniture and Appliance, St. Mary of the
Plains and Bel-Air Motel, all in Dodge
City.
She was a former member of St. Joseph
Catholic Church, Offerle, Sacred Heart
Cathedral and Daughters of Isabella both
of Dodge City, Office of Regents, Kinsley,
and she was an organist at both
churches. She was also a volunteer at
Birthright.
On Oct. 8, 1936, she married J.W. “Jay”
Schmitt at Offerle. He preceded her in
death on June 14, 1980.
Survivors include her son, Anthony
“Tony” and wife Linda, Salina; two
daughters, Linda Mayhugh and husband
Lloyd, Great Bend, and Chris Hayes and
husband Aaron, Dodge City; one brother,
Edward F. Schwarz, Offerle, and one
sister, Emma Hemken, Dodge City. 13
grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren;
and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her
parents, four sons, Mike, Jim “Red”, Jerry
and Fred Schmitt; a granddaughter,
Renee Schmitt; two brothers, Charles
and Herman Schwarz; and one sister,
Ludwina Butler.
D of I Rosary will be at 4 p.m. today at
Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge
City. Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m. today
at Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel.
Funeral Mass will be Saturday at 10 a.m.
at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 903 Central
Ave., Dodge City, with Father Ted A.
Skalsky presiding. Friends may call from

Darrell Gene Standley
1938 - 2007
RUSSELL — Darrell Gene Standley, 69, of
Russell, died Nov. 14 at the Galichia
Heart Hospital in Wichita. Darrell was
born on Jan. 3, 1938, in Osborne County,
on the family farm north of Lucas in the
Delhi community. He was the son of
Hugh M. and Lida D. (Sigle) Standley. He
grew up in the Delhi community and
attended country schools up to the
eighth grade and attended two years’
high school in the Delhi area.
Darrell was united in marriage to Gladys
Boxberger on June 26, 1960, at St. John
Lutheran Church in Russell. They lived in
Lucas and later moved and made their
home in Russell and have lived there
since 1961. Later they were blessed with
two sons named Brian and Brad. Darrell
began his work history for Bob Sparry
Welding in Lucas. Later he worked as a
mechanic for Ford Motor Co., then
worked for Central Machine Shop in
Russell. He left Central Machine Shop
and worked for Boxberger Tank Service
for one year before going back to Central
Machine Shop. In November of 1970 he
became owner and operator of the
Central Machine Shop, which he operated
with his sons.
He was a member of St. John Lutheran
Church. He enjoyed spending time with
his family and grandchildren, trap
shooting and was a member of the ATA
and KTA trap shooting organizations. He
also enjoyed fishing, restoring old
vehicles and going to his Bible study card
group.
He is survived by his wife Gladys of the
home, sons Brian Standley and wife
Rachelle and Bradley Standley and wife
Rosie, all of Russell; brother Harold
Standley of Kensington; two sisters, Lola
Luder of Russell and Doris Langerman of
Lucas; and six grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his parents and two
brothers, Harvey and Donald Standley.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10
a.m. on Saturday at St. John Lutheran
Church in Russell. Burial will follow at the
St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Russell.
Visitation will be today from 9 a.m. to 8
p.m. with the family present this evening
from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Pohlman-Varner-
Peeler Mortuary in Russell. A memorial
has been established to the St. John
Youth Group. Contributions and
condolences may be left with Pohlman-
Varner-Peeler Mortuary.
