Lorraine Catherine Hertel
1918 - 2007
HAYS — Lorraine Catherine Hertel, 88,
died Nov.. 13 at St. John’s Health Care
Center in Victoria. Born Dec. 17, 1918, at
Loretta, she was the daughter of Joseph
and Catherine (Basgall) Miltenberger.
She married Philip Joseph Hertel on Oct.
18, 1937, in Loretta. He died March 19,
1954. A 1937 graduate of Otis-Bison
High School, she was a cook at Jefferson
East Grade School in Hays, a custodian
at the Hays Post Office for 22 years and
a wedding cake decorator for a number
of years.
Mrs. Hertel was a member of Immaculate
Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hays.
Survivors include four sons, Denis Hertel
and wife Claudia of Great Bend, Valerian
Hertel of Goodland, Richard Hertel of
Salina and Don Hertel and wife Joyce of
Hays; three daughters, Pat Staab and
husband Omar of Hays, Phyllis Mendes
and husband Raymond of Hugoton and
Dolores Myers and husband Dave of
Hays; 15 grandchildren and 24 great-
grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by her parents, her husband and
one daughter, Lolita Hertel.
A vigil service will be at 7 p.m. today at
Cline’s Mortuary of Hays, 1919 E. 22nd
in Hays. Funeral service will be at 1:30
p.m. on Friday at Immaculate Heart of
Mary Catholic Church in Hays. Friends
may visit from 3 to 9 p.m. today and 10
a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday at Cline’s
Mortuary. Burial will be at St. Joseph
Cemetery, Hays. Memorials are
suggested to Immaculate Heart of Mary
Church Building Fund and Masses.

Rev. H. Paul Osborne
1914 - 2007
The Rev. H. Paul Osborne, 93, died Nov.
12. He was born in Garrison, Ky., on
Sept. 19, 1914. He was the son of Lee
and Virginia Osbome, deceased. He had
one brother, the Rev. Arthur Lee
Osborne, deceased, and a sister, Mrs.
Thomas R. Lykins of Cincinnati, Ohio,
also deceased.
Father Osbome attended grade school in
Garrison and graduated from Lewis
County High School in Vanceburg, Ky.
After accepting the vocation of the
ministry, he began his education in God’s
Bible School, Cincinnati, Ohio, and
entered Kentucky Wesleyan College at
Winchester, Ky., now at Owensboro. He
received a B.A. degree, cum laude in
1938. He entered Lexington Theological
Seminary in the fall of that year, and
received a Master of Divinity degree in
1941. He was ordained in the Methodist
ministry and later was confirmed into the
Episcopal Church. He attended Virginia
Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Va.,
and completed his preparation there in
1945, and was ordained to the
priesthood on Nov. 30, 1945. He
attended Trinity University and Incarnate
Word College in San Antonio, Texas, and
received an M.A. degree in 1955.
He served churches in Kentucky and
Texas, primarily in San Antonio at St.
Paul’s Episcopal Church, then moved to
Charleston, S.C. He was later called to a
church in Wichita, and then went to
Medford, Mass., and from there to
Arkansas, and completed his parish
ministry in Great Bend.
Father Osborne left the parish ministry
for a time and became a professional
fund-raising consultant. He also worked
for the United States Treasury
Department as a sales promotional
representative for the Savings Bond
Division. He married Gladys Marie Jones
May 31, 1936. They had three children,
Ann Harlan Mitchell and John Holland
Osbome of Wichita, and Thomas Lee
Osbome, deceased. They celebrated 71
years of marriage on May 31.
Father Osborne was active in church and
community work throughout his career in
the ministry. He was president of the
Ministers’ Associations in Great Bend,
and San Antonio, Texas. He was elected
president of the Community Coordinating
Council in Kingsville, Texas, the Councils
of Churches in Great Bend, and the
Kansas Ecumenical Council for two
terms. He conducted the first ecumenical
service of the Holy Communion for 12
denominations, the first in the history of
Kansas.
He was a member of a number of
fraternal organizations and was founder
and first president of Sigma Delta
fraternity at Kentucky Wesleyan College,
which is now a chapter of Sigma Nu, a
national collegiate fraternity. He was a
member of Alpha Theta Ze, a national
theological seminary fraternity. He was a
member of the Masonic Order for more
than 50 years, and a member of all York
Rite Bodies.
Father Osborne is survived by his wife
Gladys, daughter Ann (Matthew), son
John (Renee), eight grandchildren and
10 great-grandchildren. A memorial has
been established at St. James Episcopal
Church.

Charlotte Ann Runyon
1952 - 2007
SMITH CENTER — Charlotte Ann Runyon,
55, died Nov. 12 at the Smith County
Memorial Hospital. Born Sept. 3, 1952,
she was the daughter of Francis and
Betty (Powers) Runyon. She was a
schoolteacher.
Survivors include her father, Francis
Runyon of Smith Center, and a sister,
Joanna Runyon of Smith Center. She was
preceded in death by her mother, Betty,
and a brother, Kenneth.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m.
Friday at the Nazarene Church in Smith
Center with Pastors Don Fisher and Matt
Lucas officiating. Burial will follow at the
Fairview Cemetery in Smith Center. A
memorial service will be held at 10:30
a.m. Saturday at the Hoisington High
School Auditorium. Friends may visit
from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral
home. Memorials are suggested to the
Hoisington Church of the Nazarene,
Smith Center Church of the Nazarene,
Hospice Services of Smith County or
Hoisington High School in care of the

Frank S. Horton
1927 - 2007
HOISINGTON — Frank S. Horton, 80,
died Nov. 10 at Wheatland Nursing
Center in Russell. Born Aug. 1, 1927, in
Pontiac, Mich., he was the son of Leon L.
and Orpha D. (Hicks) Horton. He married
Lorene C. Jacobson on Aug. 30, 1950, in
rural Dickinson County. A resident of
Hoisington since 1970, coming from
Medicine Lodge, he was a power plant
operator at Central Kansas Medical
Center in Great Bend, retiring Aug. 1,
1992.
Mr. Horton was a U.S. Merchant Marine
veteran, serving in World War II. He was
a member of First Southern Baptist
Church in Great Bend and the American
Legion Post No. 286 in Hoisington.
Survivors include his wife of Russell;
three sons, David Horton of Covington,
Ky., Don Horton of Hoisington and Frank
Horton of Salina; a daughter, Lillian Feldt
of Hoisington; a brother, Leo Horton of
Seneca, S.C.; eight grandchildren; and
13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded
in death by three brothers, George, Art
and Leon Horton; and two sisters, Zella
Marshall and infant Lillian Horton.
Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m.
today at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home
in Hoisington with the Rev. Doyle Smith
officiating. Burial will be at the
Hoisington Cemetery with flag
presentation by Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post No. 7428 and American Legion Post

Eva Marie (Wulf) Konecny
1916 - 2007
CHENEY — Eva Marie (Wulf) Konecny,
90, died Nov. 10 at Homestead Health
Center, Wichita. She was born Dec. 6,
1916, at Haysville, the daughter of
Bernard and Anna (Elling) Wulf. She
married Joseph Charles Konecny Sept.
20, 1945, at Wichita. She lived in Great
Bend for 40 years before moving to
Cheney. She was a housewife.
Mrs. Konecny was a member of St. Paul’s
Lutheran Church in Cheney.
Survivors include a son, David, of
Wichita; two sisters, Cleota Woolman of
Saratoga, Calif., and Berniece Gordon of
Evergreen, Colo.; five grandchildren and
six great-grandchildren. Her husband
preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be at 9:30 a.m.
Friday at Lanterman Funeral Home,
Cheney, with Pastor Ken Kaufmann of
the church officiating. A graveside
service and burial will take place at 2
p.m. Friday at St. John’s Cemetery in
Hoisington, with Lester Crider Jr.
officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7
p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with
the family present. A memorial in her

Isabelle Rose Gruis
WESTMORELAND — Isabelle Rose Gruis
was born Nov. 10, 2007 and died Nov. 10 at
Mercy Regional Health Center in
Manhattan. Isabelle’s parents are Tim
and Elizabeth Dawn (Kinzel) Gruis of
Westmoreland. Her grandparents are
Mike and Rosalie Kinzel of Claflin and
Ron and Betty Gruis of Rock Rapids,
Iowa. Her aunts and uncles are Ann and
Lyndon Johnson, Joel Gruis, and Jessica,
Theresa and Christina Kinzel. Her cousins
are Tyler, Tracy and Stan Johnson.
A graveside Mass of Christian Burial will
be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Bernard’s
Catholic Cemetery in Wamego.
Memorials have been designated for the
St. Bernard Church Building Fund and
contributions may be left in care of

Hubert Samuel Radke
1924 - 2007
MILBERGER — Hubert Samuel Radke, 83,
died Nov. 11 at Hutchinson Hospital,
Hutchinson. He was born July 30, 1924,
in Russell County, the son of Samuel S.
and Lena L. (Karst) Radke. He married
Betty Ann Schwien on June 12, 1949, at
Milberger. He was a lifetime farmer and
stockman with his son, Jon; he also
owned and operated Hubert S. and Son
Dirt Construction for 55 years with his
son, Sammy. The love of his life was
operating the motor grader. He was a
lifetime resident of the Milberger area.
He was a member of the United
Emmanuel Lutheran Church, where he
was baptized, confirmed and married. He
served on the church council numerous
times, was president of Area 2 Lutheran
Men in Mission and recently served on
the Church Call Committee. He also was
active for the Milberger Memorial Day
Veterans and Activities Association. He
was a lifetime member of VFW Post 6240
and American Legion Post 99, both of
Russell.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World
War II, serving from 1942-1944 in heavy
artillery as a heavy equipment operator.
Survivors include his wife, of Russell; two
sons, Sammy H. Radke and his wife,
Penny, of Milberger, and Jon F. Radke
and his wife, Brenda, of Hays; two
daughters, Kathleen M. Angle and her
husband, Steven, of Hays, and Elizabeth
A. Radke of Milberger; a sister, Esther L.
Bitter of Garden City; four grandchildren
and four great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his parents and by
a foster sister, Rachel Keister.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 am.
Thursday at the church in Milberger, with
Pastor Amy Austin, Pastor Robert Krier
and Amy Truhe, PMA, officiating. Burial
will be at Milberger Cemetery, Milberger,
with military graveside rites conducted
by a Fort Riley Honor Guard. Visitation
will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday
with the family receiving friends from 6
to 8 p.m., and from 9:30 a.m. until
service time Thursday at the church.
