Elsie Louise Weiss
1913 - 2007
Elsie Louise Weiss, 94, died Nov. 7, at
Renaissance Park Care Facility in Fort
Worth, Texas. She was bom April 22,
1913, in rural Barton County, the
youngest child of Friedrich “Fred”
Panning and Rosa Hammer Panning. She
married Reinhard Theodor Weiss on Oct.
21,1931, at her parents’ home in
Ellinwood. He died on Oct. 16, 1987.
Mrs. Weiss lived all of her life in Barton
County and more than 55 years at 315 E.
3rd Street, Ellinwood, before moving to
Texas in 1999 due to health reasons.
Mrs. Weiss attended Ellinwood schools
and was a member of St. John’s
Lutheran Church, Ellinwood. She was
also a member of LWML and Meadowlark
EHU. Mrs. Weiss enjoyed gardening,
especially tending to her peonies and
lilac bushes. She was a landowner and
homemaker.
Mrs. Weiss is survived by her daughter,
Rose Joan Rhoades of Dodge City; two
grandsons, Scott Rhoades and his wife
Kayla of Arlington, Texas, and Mike
Rhoades of Haysville; five great-
grandchildren, Lacy and Kelcy Rhoades
of Arlington, Texas, Andrew Rhoades of
Pratt, and AIyssa and Austin Rhoades of
Haysville; and numerous nieces and
nephews. Mrs. Weiss was preceeded in
death by her parents; husband; six
sisters, Alma Heine, Ida Bryant, Adella
Schiewe, Laura Dupont, Emma Suhler.
and Eleonora Trimpe; brother Frederick
“Freddie” Panning; and son-in-law, Ron
Rhoades.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on
Monday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in
Ellinwood with the Rev. Jeff Frakes
officiating. Burial will be at the Lakin-
Comanche District Cemetery in
Ellinwood. Friends may call from 1 to 8
p.m. Sunday with the family receiving
friends from 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral
home. Memorials are suggested to the
St. John's Lutheran Church Building
Fund.

Wayne William Barger
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Wayne William
Barger, 71, of Port St. Lucie, passed
away Oct. 28, at his residence. He was
born in Barton County, and had been a
resident of Port St. Lucie for the past 20
years, coming from Great Bend. Prior to
retirement he was owner and operator of
Barger Electric in Great Bend, and in Port
St. Lucie.
He was a veteran, having served with
the United States Army. He was a
member of the Central Kansas Builders
Association and a member of the Great
Bend Electrical Board. He was a member
of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Stuart,
Fla., where he was a soloist and member
of the church choir. He served as an
elder at the church as well.
Survivors include his wife of 49 1/2
years, Kathleen Z. Barger of Port St.
Lucie; one son, Jan William Barger of
Palm City, Fla.; three daughters, Shanda
Azzi of Stuart, Fla., Sonya Ivy of
Oklahoma City, Okla., and Lori Barger of
Jensen Beach, Fla.; 10 grandchildren,
one great-grandchild and four sisters,
Iona Ramsey of Pensacola, Fla., Leila
Harders of Benton, Kan., Alene Clarke of
Great Bend and Shirley Likes of
Mechanicsburg, Pa.
Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 2, from 4
to 7 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home Chapel
in Port St. Lucie. Funeral services will be
Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Redeemer
Lutheran Church in Stuart, with Pastor
David Albers officiating. Interment will be
in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Palm City,
Fla.

1911 - 2007
HOISINGTON — Elizabeth Lehning
Hanzlick, 96, died Nov. 7 at Lutheran
Home, WaKeeney. She was born June
20, 1911, on a farm near Susank, the
daughter of George Adam and Katherine
Elizabeth (Heinrich) Lehning. Elizabeth
married Vernon Hanzlick on Feb. 9,
1930. He preceded her in death on Feb.
20, 1978. She was a homemaker and a
Hoisington resident since 1975, coming
from Beeler.
She was a member of First United
Methodist Church and United Methodist
Women, both of Hoisington. She was a
volunteer for Friendship Meals, along
with RSVP, for many years.
Survivors include a son, Jerry Hanzlick,
and his wife Joyce, of Hill City; a
daughter, Norma L. Christie and her
husband, Larry, Wichita; five
grandchildren, Doug Christie, Rod
Christie, Julia (Hanzlick) Krumme, Joel
Hanzlick and Jessica Hanzlick; and three
great-grandchildren, Hannah Christie and
Drake and Malie Krumme. She was
preceded in death by a grandson, Jaret
Hanzlick, six brothers and five sisters.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m.

Home, Hoisington, with Pastor Garry
Dassow officiating. Burial will be at
Hoisington Cemetery. Visitation will be
from 1 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m.

Anna A. Haberman
1906 - 2007
La CROSSE — Anna A. Haberman, 101,
of La Crosse, died Nov. 7 at the Rush
County Memorial Hospital, La Crosse.
She was born Jan. 19, 1906, at Olmitz,
the daughter of George and Anna
(Schreiber) Skolaut. She married Joseph
F. Haberman June 12, 1928, at Olmitz.
He died March 6, 1982. She was a
resident of Rush County since 1948,
moving there from Larned. She was a
homemaker.
She was a member of St. Michael’s
Catholic Church and its Altar Society,
both of La Crosse.
Survivors include two sons, Joseph G.
Haberman of Larned and Henry L.
Haberman of Timken; two daughters,
Esther M. Brack of Colorado Springs,
Colo., and Joan M. Dreher, La Crosse; 10
grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren
and five great-great-grandchildren. She
was preceded in death by her parents,
her husband, a son, Melvin E. Haberman,
a daughter, Magdlene Haberman, a
brother, George Skolaut, and two sisters,
Ellen Haberman and Stephanie Jarmer.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m.
Saturday at St. Michael’s Catholic
Church, La Crosse, with Father Rene
Labrador officiating. Interment will be in
the La Crosse City Cemetery.Visitation
will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at
Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, with

p.m. A vigil service and rosary will be

HOISINGTON — Elizabeth Hanzzlick, 95,
died Nov. 7 at the Lutheran Home in
WaKeeney. She was born June 12, 1911.

ELLINWOOD — Elsie Louise Weiss, 94,
died Nov. 7 at Renaissance Park Care

homemaker and retired co-owner of
Weiss Hardware. She married Reinhard
T. Weiss on Oct. 21, 1931, in Ellinwood.
He died Oct. 16, 1987.
Mrs. Weiss was a member of St. John’s
Lutheran Church and L.W.M.L., both of
Ellinwood, and Meadowlark EHU.
Survivors include a daughter, Rose Joan
Rhoades of Dodge City; two grandsons,
Scott Rhoades and wife Kayla of
Arlington, Texas, and Mike Rhoades of
Haysville; five great-grandchildren, Lacy

Jane Davis
1942 - 2007
HUTCHINSON — Marilyn “Jane” Davis,
65, of Hutchinson, went to be with her
Lord on Nov. 4 at the Hospice House in
Hutchinson after a year long battle with
lung cancer. Born June 19, 1942, in
Great Bend, she was the daughter of
George Jr. and Ruth Huddleston Murdy.
She lived in Hoisington until she
graduated from Hoisington High School
in 1960, then attended Colorado
Women’s College in Denver, Colo. She
married E. H. “Dave” Davis in Houston,
Texas, on May 23, 1962. She resided in
Texas for 10 years before returning to
Hoisington in 1972. She and her husband
lived there until the Hoisington tornado
in 2001, when they moved to
Hutchinson. She was the business
manager and co-owner of Murdy Motors,
the Ford dealership in Hoisington, for 15
years with her husband. Later she
worked in the human resources
department at Fuller Brush in Great Bend
for eight years.
Mrs. Davis was a member of Faith United
Methodist Church and P.E.O. Chapter D,
both of Hutchinson.
Survivors include her husband, of the
home; a son, Rusty Davis and wife Sheri
of Syracuse, Utah; three daughters,
Missy Ricken and husband Doug of Las
Animas, Colo., Jennifer Brungardt and
Sieker of Chase; a daughter, Carolyn
Poole of Stafford; six grandchildren,
Michelle and Doug Adams, Audrey and
Casey Rynerson, Brian Sieker, Kurt
Sieker, Emily Poole and Melody Poole;
and a great-grandson, Parker Rynerson.
He was preceded in death by a brother,
Harry Sieker Jr., and a daughter, Cheryl
Ann Sieker.
Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m.

Dale V. Phillips
1914 - 2007
Dale V. Phillips, 93, of Great Bend, died
Nov. 3 at his daughter's home in Great
Bend. Born June 17, 1914, at Lake City,
he was the son of Cyrus V. and Edith
Swope Phillips. He married Helen Louise
Powers on Oct. 6, 1945, at Longview,
Texas. She died April 29, 2002. He was
co-owner of Phillips Sporting Goods for
32 years. He had lived in Great Bend
since 1945, coming from Longview,
Texas. He graduated from Coats High
School at Coats. He was a U.S. Army
veteran, serving in World War II.
Mr. Phillips was a member of First United
Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge No. 15
and York Rite, American Legion Post 180,
VFW Post 3111, Eagles Lodge, a former
volunteer for Meals on Wheels and RSVP,
and a Boy Scout leader, all of Great
Bend. He wa also an avid hunter,
fisherman, woodcarver and gardener.
Survivors include a son, Randall S.
Phillips, of Great Bend; a daughter,
Renee Patterson and husband David, of
Great Bend; two grandchildren, Justin
Kruse and Nicholas Kruse, both of Hays;
three step-grandchildren, four step-great-
grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four
brothers, Paul, Earl, Glen and Loyd
Phillips, and a sister, Bettye Nelson.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m.
Wednesday at Bryant Funeral Home,
Great Bend, with the Rev. Gary Brooks
officiating. Inurnment will be at the Great
Bend Cemetery, with Military Rites
conducted by a Fort Riley Honor Guard
and Masonic Rites conducted by Great
Bend Masonic Lodge No. 15. There will
be no visitation, as cremation has taken
place. Memorial funds have been
established for the Sunflower Shrine
Travel Fund and for First United
Methodist Church.
