Clyde Ulery
WEIR, Kan. - Clyde B. Ulery, 72, Weir, died at 7:34 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, 1997, at Mount Carmel Medical Center, Pittsburg, after a two-month illness.
Mr. Ulery was born July 19, 1922, at Monmouth.
He had lived in Weir since 1990.
He was an Army veteran of World War II who served in the Army Corps of Engineers.
He worked as a heavy equipment operator who helped build lock and dam systems, including the St. Lawrence Seaway.
He retired in 1990.
He was a member of Osage Church of the Brethren, rural McCune.
He was a member of Operating Engineers Union Local No. 701.
He married Irma H. Altop on Jan. 2, 1945, at Girard.
She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Gary C. Ulery, Tupelo, Miss., and Timothy D. Ulery, Dover, Ark.; a daughter, Debora J. Ulery, Riverton, Wyo.; a sister, Maxine M. Blair, Fort Worth, Texas; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Osage Cemetery, rural McCune.
The Rev. Delbert Chance will officiate.
The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Weir.
The casket will remain closed.
Billy Forkner
COLUMBUS, Kan. - Billy Forkner, 60, 519 W. Sycamore St., Columbus, died at 3:10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, 1997, at Freeman Hospital West, Joplin, after a long illness.
Mr. Forkner was born Feb. 12, 1936, near Hallowell.
He attended rural schools in Cherokee County and was graduated in 1954 from Cherokee County Community High School.
He received a State Farmer award in 1954 from the Future Farmers of America.
He was a Marine Corps veteran who served for 20 years and retired in 1974.
He worked for Procter & Gamble, Albany, Ga., from 1974 to 1978.
He was self-employed in the construction business in Albany until he moved to Columbus in 1982.
In Columbus, he started B&S; Construction Co.
He also was an assistant teacher in the building trades program at Columbus High School.
He was a member of the Baptist Church, Columbus.
He married Shirley Coy on July 30, 1958, at Crestline.
She survives.
Other survivors include a son, Mark Forkner, Columbus; three daughters, Sheri Jarrett and Glenda Peterson, both of Columbus, and Sheila Kimbrell, Albany; his mother, Bessie Kepner, Columbus; four sisters, Betty Marshall, June Evans, Nancy Rowton and Dorothy Wells, all of Columbus; three brothers, Leonard Forkner, Joe Forkner and Stanley Forkner, all of Columbus; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Murdock Funeral Home, Columbus, with the Rev. Garland Bohn officiating.
Burial will be in McKee Cemetery, northwest of Columbus.
Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Keith Reeves Post No. 3, Columbus.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Harl Irwin
BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. - Harl Vear Irwin, 82, Coffeyville, a former Baxter Springs resident, died Saturday night, Jan. 4, 1997, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center after an illness.
Mr. Irwin was born Oct. 26, 1914, at Webb City, Mo.
He was graduated in 1931 from Picher (Okla.) High School.
He moved to rural Baxter Springs in 1947 and farmed.
He also worked for Spencer Chemical Co. at Riverton.
He moved to the state of Colorado in 1995 and to Coffeyville in December 1996.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Baxter Springs and Ottawa Masonic Lodge No. 492, Quapaw, Okla.
He married Imogene Smith on April 21, 1935, at Picher.
She died Feb. 27, 1995.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Derryberry, Coffeyville route 5; a son, Dennis Irwin, Broomfield, Colo.; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The body has been cremated.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Abbott Funeral Home, Baxter Springs.
Private burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Webb City.
Arrangements are under the direction of Ford-Wulf-Bruns Funeral Service, Coffeyville.

Ruth Howell
Ruth Elizabeth Fisher Howell, age 76, of Lawrence, Kan., formerly of Joplin, passed away at 12:04 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2001 at the home of her daughter in Millsboro, Del.
Born February 10, 1925 in Winfield, Kan., she was the daughter of the late John and Maggie Horton Fisher and lived in Joplin over 25 years where she attended Joplin High School.
She moved to Lawrence, Kan., approximately 45 years ago and to be near her daughter in November of 2000.
She was a provider of home health care.
She was preceded in death by a husband, Leroy Zern, and by her second husband, John Howell in 1981.
Five brothers and three sisters also preceded her in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Ruth Joan Roberts of Millsboro, Joyce Elliott of Lawrence, Kan.; her sister, Susie Woolever of Joplin; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Fairview Cemetery with Rev. Bob Simon officiating.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. Monday at Parker Mortuary.
Nadine Bryson
Galena, Kan. - Nadine Bryson, 90, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., a former Galena resident, died Sunday, April 15, 2001 at Life Care Center, Sierra Vista.
She had been an area resident for the past 13 years.
She was born January 11, 1911 at Galena, Kan.
Her parents were Earl and Dora Breden.
Nadine married Richard “Dick” Bryson in 1946.
He preceded her in death in 1980.
She was a loving and a devoted wife, mother and friend.
She had a great faith and love of God, which carried her through life.
She is survived by her children; Richard (wife, Barbara) Bryson, Barstow, Calif., Lois Wilson, Memphis, Tenn.; Larry (wife, Deborah) Bryson, Sierra Vista, Ariz.; brother, Clifford Breden, Tyler, Texas; sisters, Nellie Haynes, Topeka, Kan., and Marie Chadwell, Renton, Wash.; grandchildren, Nathan Bryson, Buna, Texas, Christopher (wife, Julie) Bryson, Lake Charles, La., and Billy Bryson, Kingman, Ariz.; great-grandchildren, Erin, Alyssa and Megan Bryson, and many other relatives and friends who knew and loved her.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 20, 2001 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS.
Gene Wilson, Minister will officiate.
Burial will be in Lowell Cemetery, Lowell, Kan.
Marion Ingram
CHETOPA, Kan. - Marion Dale Ingram, 72, Chetopa, died at 6:10 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, 1997, at a local nursing home after a long illness. Mr. Ingram was born Jan. 3, 1925, at Welch, Okla.
He lived most of his adult life at Topeka.
He moved in 1987 to Chetopa.
He was a retired restaurant worker.
Survivors include a brother, William W. Ingram, Welch; and two sisters, Agnes M. Duncan and Alma I. Sprouce, both of Chetopa.
Private graveside services will be conducted at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of Thomas Funeral Home, Welch.
Mildred Westfall
COMMERCE, Okla. - Mildred Frances Marie Westfall, 83, 304 N. Mickey Mantle Blvd., Commerce, died at 4:10 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 1997, at Baptist Regional Health Center, Miami, after a long illness.
Mrs. Westfall was born Sept. 23, 1913, in Akron, Ohio.
She moved to Miami in 1945.
She moved to Fort Myers, Fla., in 1979, and moved to Commerce in 1996.
She was graduated from Kent State University, Kent, Ohio, with a teaching degree.
She was a member of Alpha Sigma Tau sorority and had been an elementary teacher at Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
She operated a kindergarten in Miami for 15 years.
She was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star.
She married Oral R. Westfall in 1934.
He survives. Other survivors include two sons, Terry Westfall, Chelsea, Mich., and Mike Westfall, Miami; a brother, Frank Reiber, state of California; a sister, Shirley Grayem, state of California; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Miami.
The Rev. Charles Horton will officiate.
Burial will be in GAR Cemetery in Miami under direction of Cooper-Althouse Funeral Home, Miami.
