Lorene Ebel
OSWEGO, Kan. - Lorene Watson Ebel, 82, formerly of 1213 W. Sixth St., died Saturday night, Feb. 22, 1997, at a local nursing home after a long illness.
Mrs. Ebel was born July 2, 1914, near the Sherman community, northwest of Oswego.
She worked many years at Hallmark Card Co. at Parsons and Leavenworth.
She worked more than 20 years for United Telephone System, retiring in 1979.
She was a member of Seventh-day Adventist Church, Oswego.
She married Theodore Ebel on Feb. 28, 1933, at Oswego.
He died Sept. 6, 1989.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Sherman community cemetery.
The Rev. Tom Heflin will officiate.
Friends may call after 11 a.m. today at Murdock Funeral Home, Oswego.
Contributions may be made to Oswego Senior Citizen Center, in care of the funeral home.
Dorothy Simion
PITTSBURG, Kan. - Dorothy M. Simion, 75, 903 Ohio St., died at 4:16 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, 1997, at a local nursing home after a six-month illness.
Miss Simion was born July 26, 1921, at Pittsburg, where she was a lifetime resident.
She graduated in 1938 from Pittsburg High School.
She was an office worker at Hull & Dillon Packing Plant, and she worked 10 years at Gas Service Co., retiring in August 1986.
She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
She volunteered 11 years for the Mount Carmel Medical Center's auxiliary.
Survivors include a brother, Antone Simion, Troy, Mich.; and two sisters, Katherine Cavanaugh, Wichita, and Esther Simion, of the home.
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
The Rev. Thomas Stroot will officiate.
Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery.
Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Pittsburg, where the family will receive friends afterward.
Lora Eby
BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. - Lora Lucille Eby, 75, 314 Cleveland, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 1997, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., after an illness.
Mrs. Eby was born Sept. 22, 1921, at Anderson, Mo.
She moved in 1954 to the Baxter Springs area from California.
She was a seamstress for King Louie Garment Co., Baxter Springs.
She and her husband owned and operated Baxter Game Chicken, east of Baxter Springs, for 20 years.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Quapaw, Okla.
Her husband, Henry Eby, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Julie Elizabeth Eby, Carthage, Mo.; two sisters, Elsa Crosby, Quapaw, and Violet Marie Piper, Oklahoma City, Okla.; and two brothers, Charley McKibben, Miami, Okla., and Don Baker, St. Louis, Mo.
Arrangements are pending with Paul Thomas Funeral Home, Picher, Okla.
Letha Howard
COLUMBUS, Kan. - Letha M. Cowan Howard, 88, 204 N. Illinois St., Columbus, died at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, 1997, at her home after a sudden illness.
Mrs. Howard was born July 28, 1908, at Weir.
She attended rural schools in Cherokee County and Columbus High School.
She lived on farms in the Crestline, Hallowell and Columbus areas until moving to Columbus 30 years ago.
She worked for local nursing homes and was a kitchen worker at Maude Norton Memorial Hospital, Columbus, and Columbus Auction, until retiring in 1992.
She married John G. Howard on April 3, 1926, at Joplin, Mo.
He died Dec. 3, 1974.
She was preceded in death by a son.
Survivors include a son, Stanley Howard, Tulsa, Okla.; a daughter, Joyce Garner, Columbus route 2; two sisters, Florence Ping and Reva Nelson, both of Pittsburg; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Park Cemetery, Columbus, with the Rev. Paul Duncan officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Murdock Funeral Home, Columbus.
James Fowler
ALTAMONT, Kan. - James Harrison Fowler, 89, Claremore, Okla., formerly of Altamont, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 1997, at a Claremore nursing home after a long illness.
Mr. Fowler was born Nov. 23, 1907, in McDonald County, Mo.
He moved with to Sherman in 1909, where he grew up and attended school.
He was a farmer near Edna and Mound Valley until 1973, when he retired and moved to Altamont.
He then worked for Labette County Highway Department.
He moved to Claremore in 1996.
He married Berniece M. Cunningham on Oct. 25, 1930, at Oswego.
She survives.
Other survivors include a son, Larry Fowler, Claremore; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oswego Cemetery, with the Rev. Dean Knewtson officiating.
Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bath Funeral Home, Altamont.
Norman Moore
FRONTENAC, Kan. - Norman "Jack" Moore, 73, 801 N. Harris St., Frontenac, died at 11:35 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, 1997, at the Mount Carmel Medical Center after a long illness.
Mr. Moore was born Sept. 11, 1923, at Argentina, Kan.
He served in the Army during World War II and served in the invasion of the Philippines in May 1943.
He was a technical sergeant in the 277th Port Battalion.
After his military service, he attended College of Commerce, Kansas City, Mo.
He was employed by Dicky Clay Manufacturing Co., Kansas City, in 1946 and was transferred to Pittsburg in 1971.
He worked as controller and secretary-treasurer for the Dickey Clay Co. until 1984.
While living in Kansas City, he was a member of the Financial Executive Institute and served on the Advisory Council of Junior Achievement.
He was a member of the Old Mission Masonic Lodge No. 153 in Shawnee Mission, Kan.
He married Mary Moore on Nov. 29, 1942, at Olathe.
She survives.
Additional survivors include a son, David Jack Moore, Broken Arrow, Okla.; a sister, Jerry Winchell, Overland Park; a brother, Laurence K. Moore Jr., Merriam; and five grandchildren.
One son preceded him in death.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Maple Hill Cemetery, Kansas City.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Sunday.
Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home.
Art Testerman
BARTLETT, Kan. - Arthur W. "Art" Testerman, 71, Bartlett, died Friday morning, Feb. 14, 1997, at Labette County Medical Center, Parsons, after an illness.
Mr. Testerman was born May 9, 1925, in Craig County, Okla.
He was a farmhand.
He worked for seven years at Comet Mobile Homes, Coffeyville, and for 23 years at Funk Manufacturing Co., Coffeyville, before retiring in 1987.
He later was a Bartlett Grade School custodian.
He was a 10-year president of the Lake Creek Cemetery, rural Bartlett.
He married Betty Kimrey on Nov. 17, 1951, at Chetopa.
She survives.
Additional survivors include two daughters, Connie Nickel and Denise Hope, both of Bartlett; three brothers, Harold "Gene" Testerman, Coffeyville, Duane Testerman, Dearing, and Onnie Testerman, Bartlett; seven grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Monday at the Lake Creek Cemetery, rural Bartlett. Fred Wooldridge, minister, will officiate.
Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Cliff and Dennis Hope residence, Bartlett.
