Elmer Tanner
COLUMBUS, Kan. - Elmer Dale Tanner, 77, Denver, Colo., formerly of Columbus, died at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 1997, at his home after a sudden illness.
Mr. Tanner was born March 22, 1919, south of Columbus. He attended high school in Columbus and Riverton. He moved with his wife to Denver in 1946, where he worked as a heavy equipment operator for Hutchinson Construction Co. until he retired in 1990.
He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge, Denver. He was an Army veteran of World War II who served in the European Theater.
He married Eva Martin on Oct. 23, 1943, at Girard. She survives.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Park Cemetery, Columbus, with the Rev. Garland Bohn officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Murdock Funeral Home, Columbus.
Grace Meriweather
CHETOPA, Kan. - Grace Elizabeth Meriweather, 87, 812 Locust, died Monday, March 17, 1997, at her home of an apparent heart attack.
Mrs. Meriweather was born on Oct. 2, 1909, in Coffey County, Tenn. She had lived in the Chetopa area since the 1920s. She was employed by the Kansas Ordinance Plant, Parsons, during World War II. She also worked at Dave's Dairy Jane, Chetopa, for 16 years. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church ofChetopa.
She married John A. "Jack" Meriweather on Sept. 25, 1926 at Miami, Okla. He survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Wilma Carter, Chetopa, and Jacquelyn Boyle, Independence; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Faith Baptist Church, Chetopa. The Rev. Raymond Whetstone will officiate. Burial will be in Oswego Cemetery.
Contributions may be made to Faith Baptist Church, Chetopa.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bath Funeral Home, Chetopa.
Nona Rainey
GALENA, Kan. - Nona B. Garrison Rainey, 91, Galena, died Monday, March 17, 1997, at a local nursing home after a long illness.
Mrs. Rainey was born Oct. 24, 1905, at Purdy, Mo. She had lived in Webb City, Mo., before she moved to Galena. She had worked for Elder Manufacturing Co., Carl Junction, Mo.
She was a member of Assembly of God Church, Webb City.
Her husband, Frank Rainey, died on Dec. 13, 1974.
Survivors include two sons, James Rainey, Columbus, and John Rainey, Joplin, Mo.; three daughters, Sandra Spencer, Carl Junction, Rose Fisher, Seneca, Mo., and Mary Brown, Joplin; two sisters, Vera Howerton, National City, Calif., and Cora Walter, Monett, Mo.; 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
A son preceded her in death.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Simpson Funeral Home, Webb City, with the Rev. Clem Moore officiating. Burial will be in Carl Junction Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Mike Rainey, Nick Rainey, John Rainey, Joe Rainey, Gary Alford, Randy Green, James Haggard, Rick Haggard and Travis Spencer.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mary Dickson
BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. - Mary V. Dickson, 92, 1215 Lincoln Ave., died at 6:45 a.m. Monday, March 24, 1997, at a Joplin, Mo., nursing home after a 10-day illness.
Mrs. Dickson was born Oct. 3, 1904, at Portland, Ore. She moved 65 years ago to Baxter Springs from Grove, Okla. She was a member of First Christian Church and its Loyal Hustlers Sunday school class. She was a past member of Order of the Eastern Star.
She married Marion G. Dickson on Dec. 29, 1932, at Columbus. He died July 16, 1983.
Survivors include a son, James Michael Dickson, Portage, Wis.; a daughter, Elizabeth "Beth" Auman, Baxter Springs; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church, Baxter Springs.
The Rev. Ed Snider will officiate. Burial will be in Baxter Springs Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Miles, Richard Auman, Bill Auman, Gene Bowman, Allen Jones and Maynard Mitchell.
The body may be viewed after 2 p.m. Wednesday at Abbott Funeral Home, Baxter Springs.
The family will be at the home of a daughter, 2040 E. Third St.
Contributions may be made to the building fund at First Christian Church.
Dixie Farris
GALENA, Kan. - Dixie Louise Farris, 70, Galena route 2, died at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, 1997, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., after a long illness.
Mrs. Farris was born June 6, 1926, in Galena. She was graduated from Galena High School and attended the former Joplin Business College for two years. He was a bookkeeper for Howard Litch Garage for many years. She later was a partner with her brother in L. and S. Auto Parts in Galena.
She attended the Galena Assembly of God church.
Survivors include a daughter, Julie Kaetz, Auburn, Ala.; and a brother, Bob Shears, Galena route 2.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena. The Rev. Dave Robinson will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Pat Price, Steve Vogel, Kyle Vogel, Jeremy Ezell, T.J. Shears and John Myers.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Ella Masquelier
PITTSBURG, Kan. - Elenora "Ella" Masquelier, 94, 310 W. Webster St., died at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 1997, at her son's home in Iola after an illness.
Mrs. Masquelier was born Nov. 6, 1902, in Penzberg, Germany. She came to the United States with her parents as a young child and the family settled in Frontenac. She lived in Arma in 1924 and moved to Pittsburg in 1932. She was a homemaker.
She married John Masquelier Jr. in 1924 in Kansas City. He died Feb. 21, 1977.
Survivors include a son, John Masquelier Jr., Iola; a daughter, Lavon Suker, Sandy, Utah; six grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a stepson and a stepdaughter.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Pittsburg. Harry Suker will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olive Cemetery, Pittsburg.
Friends may call after 9 a.m. today at the funeral home.
Carl Treadway
COLUMBUS, Kan. - Carl L. Treadway, 57, Columbus route 3, died at 10:10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 1997, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., after an illness.
Mr. Treadway was born May 1, 1939, at Somerville, Tenn.
He grew up in Bolton, Tenn., where he was graduated from high school. He attended Memphis (Tenn.) State University. He moved to Columbus in 1983.
He and his wife owned and operated Treadway Retail Liquor Store, Columbus, from March 1993 until December 1996.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Millington, Tenn., the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 918, West Mineral, and the Second Flight Motorcycle Club, Kansas City, Mo.
He married Zeni Louise Zellner on Sept. 4, 1959, at Bolton. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Carla Louise Pugh, Excelsior Springs, Mo., and Sheila Ann Frasher, Roseland; his mother, Sibyl A. Treadway, Somerville; a sister, Opal Jean Winfield, Memphis; a brother, Rivers Powell, Memphis; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Murdock Funeral Home, Columbus, with the Rev. Bob Martin officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Columbus.
