Virginia Wade
PITTSBURG, Kan. - Virginia Lee Wade, 79, 2601 N. Joplin Ave., died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1997, or Wednesday, Jan. 29, in her home after an illness. Her body was found Friday, Jan. 31.
Ms. Wade was born Nov. 29, 1917, near Arcadia. She was reared in Arcadia and was graduated from Arcadia High School. She lived in Chicago and Dayton, Ohio, during the late 1930s and early 1940s, then moved to Kansas City. She moved to Pittsburg in 1966. She was a homemaker and a Methodist.
Survivors include a son, John Trytek, Houston, Texas; three brothers, Jim Wade, 702 E. 20th St., Tom Wade, Arcadia, and Joseph Wade, Anaheim, Calif.; two sisters, Marilou Norris, Joplin, Mo., and Verona Hayes, Arcadia, Calif.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The body has been cremated.
Graveside services will be at a later date at Mount Olive Cemetery. The Rev. Mike Eurit will officiate.
Harry White
WEIR, Kan. - Harry White, 88, Weir, died at 5:50 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, 1997, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., after a one-month illness.
Mr. White was born Jan. 10, 1909, in Weir. He was a lifelong area resident. He had been employed as a coal miner, a truck driver and a worker for five years for the Cherokee County Highway Department. He retired after he worked for the Kansas State Highway Department for 10 years.
He was a member of Black Diamond Masonic Lodge No. 274, the Kent Chapter Order of the Eastern Star No. 117, and United Methodist Church, all in Weir.
He married Julia M. Quenoy on Dec. 6, 1911, in Cherokee. She died Jan. 30, 1991.
Survivors include two sons, William H. White, Miami, and Robert H. White, Columbus; three sisters, Ruby Ralph, Florence Carey and Edith White, all of Pittsburg; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Weir. The Rev. James Shope will officiate. Burial will be in Hosey Hill Cemetery, Weir.
The Black Diamond Lodge No. 274 will conduct Masonic rites at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends until 8 p.m.
Contributions may be made to United Methodist Church, in care of the funeral home.
James Gooch
GALENA, Kan. - James E. Gooch, 48, Galena route 2, was pronounced dead at 8:29 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 1997, at Freeman Hospital West, Joplin, Mo., after a short illness.
Mr. Gooch was born April 9, 1948, at Baxter Springs. He was a lifetime resident of Baxter Springs and Galena. He retired in 1980 as a groundskeeper for Loma Linda County Club, rural Joplin. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church, Baxter Springs.
He married Linda Mondt on Oct. 10, 1975, at Joplin. She survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Tammy Reese-Stoffers, Duenweg, Mo.; two brothers, John Gooch, Riverton, and Tony Gooch, state of Kansas; and two sisters, Connie Cassida, Baxter Springs, and Mabel Ulbrich, Seneca, Mo.
The body has been cremated.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fellowship Baptist Church. The Rev. Jim McMechan and the Rev. Wayne Williams will officiate.
Arrangements are under the direction of Derfelt's Baxter Chapel, Baxter Springs.
Rosie Shoemaker
GALENA, Kan. - Rosie Mae Shoemaker, 65, 1017 Wall Ave., died at 4:32 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, 1997, at McCune-Brooks Hospital Extended Care, Carthage, Mo., after 13 months of ill health.
Mrs. Shoemaker was born Sept. 11, 1931, at Vernon, Fla. She moved to Galena in 1950. She was a physician's assistant for Dr. Vinyard in Joplin.
She married Delbert E. Shoemaker on May 6, 1950, at Pascagoula, Miss. He died Feb. 24, 1978.
A daughter also preceded her in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl Hobbs, Pittsburg, and Rene Myers, Seneca, Mo.; her father, Howard Pettis, Chipley, Fla.; a brother, Wayne Pettis, Knoxville, Tenn.; six sisters, Christine Morrell and Laverne Boswell, both of Vernon, Wanda Bush, Chipley, Darlene Brock, Charleston, S.C., Elaine Montpelier, Erwin, Tenn., and Minerva Harris, Eufaula, Ala.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oak Hill Cemetery, north of Galena. Denny Sikes, minister, will officiate.
Family members will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Abbott Funeral Home, Baxter Springs.
Lorene Ebel
OSWEGO, Kan. - Lorene Watson Ebel, 82, formerly of 1213 W. Sixth St., died Saturday night, Feb. 22, 1997, at a local nursing home after a long illness.
Mrs. Ebel was born July 2, 1914, near the Sherman community, northwest of Oswego. She worked many years at Hallmark Card Co. at Parsons and Leavenworth. She worked more than 20 years for United Telephone System, retiring in 1979. She was a member of Seventh-day Adventist Church, Oswego.
She married Theodore Ebel on Feb. 28, 1933, at Oswego. He died Sept. 6, 1989.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Sherman community cemetery. The Rev. Tom Heflin will officiate.
Friends may call after 11 a.m. today at Murdock Funeral Home, Oswego.
Contributions may be made to Oswego Senior Citizen Center, in care of the funeral home.
Dorothy Simion
PITTSBURG, Kan. - Dorothy M. Simion, 75, 903 Ohio St., died at 4:16 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, 1997, at a local nursing home after a six-month illness.
Miss Simion was born July 26, 1921, at Pittsburg, where she was a lifetime resident. She graduated in 1938 from Pittsburg High School. She was an office worker at Hull & Dillon Packing Plant, and she worked 10 years at Gas Service Co., retiring in August 1986. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. She volunteered 11 years for the Mount Carmel Medical Center's auxiliary.
Survivors include a brother, Antone Simion, Troy, Mich.; and two sisters, Katherine Cavanaugh, Wichita, and Esther Simion, of the home.
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. The Rev. Thomas Stroot will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery.
Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Pittsburg, where the family will receive friends afterward.
Beulah Briggs
OSWEGO, Kan. _ Beulah M. Briggs, 97, Oswego, died at 6:15 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, after a long illness.
Mrs. Briggs was born Nov. 23, 1900, at Hallowell, where she grew up and attended school. She moved to Oswego in 1952. She was a telegraph operator for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. She was a member of Oswego Christian Church and the Cornerstone Sunday school class.
She married Ernest H. Briggs on Jan. 27, 1923, at Kansas City, Mo. He died April 26, 1964.
She also was preceded in death by a daughter.
Survivors include a son, Robert Briggs, Washington, D.C.; three daughters, Gwidacq Johnson, Valley Center, Kan., Betty Green, Central Valley, Calif., and Shirley White, Bonham, Texas; a sister, Wilma Kinch, Pittsburg; 11 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Oswego Christian Church, with Boyce Mouton, minister, officiating. Burial will be in McKee Cemetery, north of Hallowell.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at at Murdock Funeral Home, Oswego.
