Stella Monroe
OSWEGO, Kan. - Stella E. Monroe, 86, Oswego, died at 12:55 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, 1997, at Labette County Medical Center, Parsons, after an illness.
Mrs. Monroe was born March 2, 1910, near Mound Valley. She was a homemaker who lived on a farm until she moved to Oswego in October 1964. She attended Bell Mound School and Pioneer School, both near Mound Valley. She was graduated from Labette County High School, Altamont.
She married Chalmer Belknar on Nov. 28, 1928. He died Feb. 14, 1968. She married Howard E. Monroe on March 2, 1970. He died Aug. 1, 1980.
She was a member of First United Presbyterian Church, Oswego. She also was a member of Cloverleaf Club, Oswego.
Surviving are four stepdaughters, Martha May Decow, Mary Jo Horn and Joyce Counter, all of Wichita, Kan., and Jayne Johnson, Plano, Texas. She is preceded in death by a son.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Murdock Funeral Home, Oswego. The Rev. Wayne Porter will officiate. Burial will be in Oswego Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home at their convenience.
Roe Parsons Sr.
SCAMMON, Kan. - Roe Parsons Sr., 91, route 2, Scammon, died at 1:05 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, 1997, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., after a long illness.
Mr. Parsons was born Sept. 6, 1905, in Stone City, Kan. He was a lifetime Scammon area resident. He had been a coal miner and farmer. He retired in 1985.
He married Susan Nevella Smith on Sept. 15, 1928, in Webb City. She died April 3, 1965.
A son also preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son, Roe Parsons Jr., Scammon; a sister, Louise Parsons, Columbus; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Weir. The Rev. James Shope will officiate.
The family will receive friends after the services.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Hosey Hill Cemetery, Weir.
Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home.
Leona Newcomb
COLUMBUS, Kan. - Leona I. Newcomb, 91, Columbus route 2, at 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 1997, at her home after an illness.
Mrs. Newcomb was born March 29, 1905, at Quapaw, Okla. She was a retired cook for the Columbus and Maude Norton hospitals. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, south of Columbus.
She married Issac Newcomb in 1921 at Quapaw. He died Aug. 4, 1959.
Three sons also preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Don Newcomb, Columbus; a daughter, Evelyn Garner, Claremore, Okla.; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Paul Thomas Funeral Home, Picher. The Rev. Marvin Cleveland and the Rev. Wilma Heavin will officiate. Burial will be in Baxter Springs (Kan.) Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Gerald Graham, Glen Graham, Bobbie Sanders, Larry Duree, Norman Sills and Richard Garner.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Ronnie Walton
GALENA, Kan. - Ronnie Walton, 55, Galena route 2, died at 12:52 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 1997, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., after a sudden illness.
Mr. Walton was born Oct. 29, 1941, near Galena. He was a lifelong area resident.
He had worked for 40 years at what is now Walton Hickory Station, Galena. He purchased the business from his father and renamed it in 1996. He was a member of the Galena Volunteer Fire Department from 1970 to 1975.
He married Glenna Phalen on Feb. 24, 1962, at Riverton. She survives.
Additional survivors include a son, Eric Walton, of the home; a daughter, Diane Fitzer, Galena; a sister Rosalie Shyrock, Joplin; and two granddaughters.
Arrangements are pending with Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena.
Danny Elliott
OSWEGO, Kan. - Joseph D. "Danny" Elliott, 42, 109 Oregon St., died at 12:36 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, 1997, at his home after a long illness.
Mr. Elliott was born Jan. 23, 1955, at Oswego. He graduated in 1973 from Oswego High School. He was a longtime Oswego resident. He was a police officer and assistant chief the last 17 years for the city of Oswego. He graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Academy at Hutchinson. He was also an automobile detailer. The Oswego mayor has declared Tuesday as "Danny Elliott Day." He was a member of the Oswego Assembly of God Church.
He married Pam Holding on Jan. 18, 1975, at Oswego. She survives.
Also surviving are a son, Greg Elliott, Wichita; a daughter, Misty Elliott, of the home; his mother, Norma Elliott, Oswego; two brothers, David Elliott, Claremore, Okla., and George Elliott, Oswego; and three sisters, Roberta Hobbs and Rebecca George, both of Oswego, and Edna Pichler, South Coffeyville, Okla.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Oswego Assembly of God Church. The Rev. Chuck Kackley will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, rural Oswego.
Pallbearers will be Labette County Sheriff's Department deputies and Oswego city police officers.
Family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Murdock Funeral Home, Oswego.
Contributions may be made to the Family Life Center building fund at the Oswego Assembly of God Church.
Florah Kearnes
PITTSBURG, Kan. - Florah E. Kearnes, 87, 1300 S. Olive, died at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 22, 1997, at her home after a long illness.
Mrs. Kearnes was born August 17, 1909, at Fredonia, Kan. She attended schools in Fredonia. She moved from Independence to Pittsburg and lived there 46 years. She and her husband owned and operated Joe's Cafe on West Fifth Street for 16 years and retired in 1973.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church; Rob Morris Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star; Amaranth; and a past member of Daughters of the Nile.
She married Joe O. Kearnes on March 4, 1931, at Parsons. He died Dec. 4, 1979.
Survivors include a daughter, Donna Troxel, Corona, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Brenner Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Ted Inman officiating. Burial will be in the Neodesha Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel.
Lucy Shannon
OSWEGO, Kan. - Lucy E. Shannon, 93, Oswego, died at 2:05 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 1997. at a local nursing home after a long illness.
Mrs. Shannon was born Dec. 12, 1903, near Faulkner. She attended schools near Faulkner. She had been a midwife, a garment worker, and an employee of several local cafes.
Her husband, Lee Nelson Shannon, died in 1979.
Survivors include a son, Edward Shannon, Erie; two sisters, Alma Vance, Oswego, and Alta Redmond, Pleasant Hill, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Cherokee Cemetery, east of Oswego.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Murdock Funeral Home, Oswego.
