Becky K. Kizman (1949-2003)
LAKE VILLAGE, Ind. — Becky K. Kizman, 53, Lake Village, Ind., died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, at St. Anthony Hospice, Crown Point, Ind. Mrs. Kizman was born Oct. 5, 1949, in Battle Creek, Mich to Charles William Gustine and the former Tresa Mae Weinert Gustine. She was a former resident of Ellsworth, Kan., and Lebanon, Pa. Survivors include her husband, Carl of Lake Village; her parents of Benton Harbor, Mich.; her children, Catherine Neubauer of Union, Ohio, Jennifer Swartz of Kentland, Ind., Kari Wainuskis of North Port, Fla., and Allen Kizman of Morocco; and three granddaughters. The body was cremated. There was a memorial service Sept. 5, the Rev. Richard Lee Boshoven officiating.
Gabriel Paul Mader
Gabriel Paul Mader was stillborn Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, at Salina Regional Medical Center. Survivors include his parents, Justin Mader and the former Rhea Burbach of Ellsworth; his brother and sister, Reilly and Helayna Mader, both of Ellsworth; the maternal grandparents, Rick and Laurita Burbach of Collyer; and the paternal grandparents, Dennis and Edna Mader, also of Collyer. The graveside service was Friday in Ellsworth Memorial Cemetery, Pastor Jim Wagner officiating.
Stephen E. ‘Steve’ Miller (1916-2003)
KANOPOLIS — Stephen E. “Steve” Miller, 87, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at the Ellsworth County Medical Center. Mr. Miller was born April 3, 1916, at Black Wolf to Stephen E. Miller Sr. and the former Catherine Cantwell. He lived in Kanopolis for the past 60 years, moving from the family farm at Black Wolf. He was a salt crusher and also had other jobs for 40 years at Independent Salt Co. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Kanopolis. He married Sandra Lamb May 6, 1989, at Great Bend. She survives. Other survivors are three sons, Johnnie and Gary S. of Kanopolis, and James E. of Washington Court House, Ohio; two daughters, Janice K. Miska of Russell, and Joan Bunch of Kanopolis; a stepson, David Hoffman of Westville, Ill.; two sisters, Marthe Hill of Arkansas City, and Adeline Vondra of Arizona; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two greatgreat- grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and six sisters. An inurnment is today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. in Ellsworth Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family. Monsignor Emil E. Sinner (1917-2003)
WILSON — Monsignor Emil E. Sinner, 86, Wilson, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2003. Msgr. Sinner was born Jan. 4, 1917, to Edward and Elizabeth Sinner in Tipton. He was a retired priest, having been ordained on May 30, 1942, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Concordia. He served at St. Wenceslaus Church in Wilson for 28 years, retiring in 1993. He studied for two years at St. Joseph's Military Academy in Hays, which is now St. Thomas More Prep-Marian High School. His seminary study was done at St. Louis Preparatory Seminary, followed by four years at Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis. He was assistant pastor at Seven Dolors parish and chaplain at St. Mary's Hospital and Catholic Newman Center at Kansas State University for two years. He became the Catholic Register's assistant editor and business manager, then moved for a short time to Saints Peter and Paul parish, where the Catholic Register was based. He became pro-chancellor of the diocese in 1947 and then was assistant to the late Rev. Monsignor John Duskie at Sacred Heart Cathedral for three years. He then moved to Sacred Heart parish in Oberlin and was also the chaplain at the Kansas State Tuberculosis Sanitarium in Norton. He then spent three years as pastor of Holy Cross Church in Pfeifer until moving to St. Wenceslaus. He was preceded in death by his parents; and six siblings. Survivors include a sister, Kathryn Albrecht of Downs; two nieces, Jane Mick of Sand Springs, Okla., and Carol Kratky of Hesston; and two nephews, Donald and Alan Reinert, both of Wichita. The funeral was Monday at the St. Wenceslaus Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Wenceslaus Cemetery Fund. Peyton D. Hines (1942-2003)
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Peyton D. Hines, 61. died Friday, Aug. 29, at Sacramento, Calif. Mr. Hines was born May 8, 1942, in West Virginia, to Cleatis Hines and the former Glenna Pigg. He was a self-employed electronic engineer who had lived in the Sacramento area since 1968. He was a member of the Riverview Yacht Club, Sacramento. He married Marilyn Johnson March 25, 1994, in Las Vagas, Nev She survives. The graveside service was Saturday in the Lorraine Baptist Cemetery, Dr. Jim Morford officiating.
Paul N. Tidball (1956-2003)
LINCOLN — Paul Nichols Tidball, 46, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, at the Ellsworth County Medical Center following a two-month illness. Mr. Tidball was born Sept. 24, 1956, at St. John’s Hospital, Salina, to Wayne and Lola Nichols Tidball. He was a farmer and employee of the Lincoln County Highway Department. He was a member of Pheasants Forever and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. He married Melanie Jan Gilbert Sept. 28, 1985 in Salina. She survives. Other survivors include two children, Amanda and Kyle, both of the home; and his mother, Lola Tidball. He was preceded in death by his father. The funeral was Aug. 29 at Wilson’s First Baptist Church, the Revs. Ed Ferrell and David Williams officiating. Burial was in Delhi Cemetery, north of Lucas. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Ellsworth County Medical Center, Tidball Children Education Fund or the Lucas Area Community Theater. KANOPOLIS — Lois Walker, 81, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003, at the Ellsworth County Medical Center, Ellsworth. Miss Walker was born Jan. 27, 1922, in Ellsworth County to Bert John Walker and the former Clara Marie Shoemaker. She was a lifetime resident of Ellsworth County and a homemaker. Survivors include a sister, Doris Svoboda of Ellsworth. The graveside service was 10 a.m. Wednesday in Ellsworth Memorial Cemetery, the Rev. Gene Langhofer officiating. Gertrude Anna Bednasek (1910-2003)
Gertrude Anna Bednasek, 93, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community, Lawrence. Mrs. Bednasek was born Jan. 3, 1910, in Ellsworth County to Ferdinand Schmoekel and the former Pauline Burmeister. She recently moved to Lawrence from Ellsworth, where she lived most of her life. She was a homemaker and a practical and private duty nurse. She was a member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and the Immanuel Lutheran Church, both in Ellsworth. She married James Bednasek April 29, 1945, in Ellsworth. He died in 2002. She also was preceded in death by a son, Larry Dean, in 1953. Survivors include a daughter, Judith Ann Juneau of Lawrence, and a granddaughter. The funeral is at 10 a.m. today (Thursday) at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Burial is in Ellsworth Cemetery. Visitation was from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 22) at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth, and from 9 to 10 a.m. today at the church. Memorials may be made to the church.
Louden ‘Junior’ Gatton (1920-2003)
BUNKER HILL — Louden “Junior” Gatton, 83, Bunker Hill, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, at the Wilson Nursing Home. Mr. Gatton was born Aug. 22, 1920, at Gravette, Ark., to Louden Deison and Jennie Fuller Gatton. He was reared in the Ellinwood area and worked there before entering the U.S. Army in 1942 during World War II. He served in Germany with the 95th Infantry Division and was seriously wounded, receiving the Purple Heart. He was discharged after nine months of hospitalization. He moved to Bunker Hill in 1947, where he was a farmer-stockman with oil interests. He was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church, Russell; a life member of VFW Post 6240, Russell and a former member of the Bunker Hill Lions Club who served on the Centerview School Board and Center Township Board. He married Zella Mae Parker May 23, 1947. She died in 1980. He also was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, R.D., Joe and Jesse Gatton; and an infant sister, Bessie Gatton. Survivors include two sons, Steven Gatton and wife Pam of Longview, Texas, and Lee Gatton and wife Beverly of Overland Park; a daughter, Lila Mae Abercrombie and husband Fred of Wilson; a special family friend, Betty Ehrlich of Russell; and five grandchildren. The funeral is 10 a.m. today (Thursday) at the St. John Lutheran Church, the Rev. Henry J. Hartman officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in Cross Plains Cemetery. Mildred Stejskal (1918-2003)
YUKON, Okla. — Mildred S. Stejskal, 85, died Oct. 1, 2003. She was born March 6, 1918, in Ellsworth, Kan., to Sylvia and Emil Svoboda. She spent her childhood in Wilson, Kan., where she was graduated from high school before moving to Yukon in 1936. She was active in the Oklahoma Czech Association. Survivors include a niece and two grandnieces. The memorial service was Oct. 4 at Smith & Turner Chapel with inurnment at a later date in Wilson.
Richard Lee McWilliams (1913-2003)
SALINA — Richard Lee McWilliams, 90, Salina, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003. Mr. McWilliams was born June 25, 1913, at Norton. He worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. for 43 years. He was a former president of the Northern Kansas District Telephone Pioneers of America and a former Salina district president of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a member of the Salina Elks Lodge No. 718 and the Belmont Boulevard Christian Church of Salina. His first wife, Mayme, died in 1974. Survivors include his wife, Margaret of Salina; a stepson, Rick Bigham and wife Paula of Ellsworth; a daughter, Nancy Haskins of Prairie Village; a brother, Tom of Roseburg, Ore.; two grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and seven stepgreat- grandchildren. The funeral was Tuesday in Roselawn Heights Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina. Evelyn Joyce Ellard (1925–2003)
Evelyn Joyce Ellard, 77, died Oct. 7, 2003, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita. Joyce was born Oct. 20, 1925, in Lincoln County to the wellknown Horace A. and Harriet E. (Hamblin) Briscoe. She had lived in Ellsworth since 1971, moving from San Antonio, Texas. Joyce was known as the little old lady who walked all over town. She often would be seen wearing bright-colored clothes, a hair net on her head and dark shades to cover her eyes. Sometimes she would walk as many as six miles a day, which was quite an accomplishment for someone 77 years old. Her work with people suffering from substance abuse has always given her recognition, as she began volunteering at the Ellsworth Correctional Facility soon after it was built almost 13 years ago. She was named Volunteer of the Year for two years by the Kansas governor and also was given the Humanitarian Award by the Kansas Muslim Society. Joyce also was a homemaker and a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the VFW Auxiliary, all of Ellsworth. Her favorite time was playing Bingo. She lived life to the fullest and will be missed by all who cared about and loved her. She is survived by a son, Ted Houses Jr. of Bennington; a daughter, Deborah Boyer of Rockledge, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Tamara Hamilton of Ellsworth and Jolana Marsh of Wichita; a step-son, Curtis J. Ellard of Eugene, Ore., a sister, MaDonna Saunders of Wichita; two grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Theodore Houses Sr., her second husband, Curtis M. Ellard; her parents; a brother; and a grandson. The memorial service was Monday at the United Methodist Church. A private family internment was conducted in Lincoln Cemetery. Marion Arlene Hill (1915-2003)
GRAND LAKE, Colo. — Marion Arlene Hill, 88, Grand Lake, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at Fort Collins, Colo. Mrs. Hill was born Sept. 2, 1915, in Sylvan Grove, Kan. to Veronica and Frederick Cross. She was reared in Ellsworth County, Kan. She was a member of the Alumni Association of Kansas State University and served in World War II as a nurse in Europe. Survivors include a daughter, Susan; a son, James; and two grandchildren, Brian and Sara.
Wilmer George ‘Bill’ Peterman (1923-2003)
SALINA — Wilmer George “Bill” Peterman, 80, Salina, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003. Mr. Peterman was born May 15, 1923, in rural Lincoln County to George Wilhelm and Frieda Maria Dunmeier Peterman. He was a carpenter and cabinet builder in Lincoln and Salina. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He also was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Salina. He married Peggy Marilyn Parker July 18, 1948, at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, rural Lincoln. She survives. Other survivors include three sons, William and wife Kay of Olathe, Robert of Fort Collins, Colo., and Thomas and wife Regina of Merriam; two sisters, Elfrieda Schneider of Lucas and Ruth Modrow of Lincoln; a grandson; and a stepgrandson. Delmar George Sidener (1932-2003)
SALINA — Delmar George Sidener, 71, Salina, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003. Mr. Sidener was born Jan. 3, 1932, at Salina. He was a farmer in the Solomon area for 47 years. Survivors include his wife, Peggy J.; two sons, Jerald T. of Salina and Douglas G. of Meriden; three daughters, Cynthia K. Robertson of Holyrood, Lynette E. Small of Hutchinson and Julie E. Stratton of Crystal City, Mo.; a sister, Helen J. Monroe of Newbury Park, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren. A memorial service was Saturday at the First Covenant Church, Salina. Dale C. Wilhelm (1942-2003)
DORRANCE — Dale C. Wilhelm, 61, Dorrance, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003. Mr. Wilhelm was born July 21, 1942, in rural Dorrance to Carol and Helen Steinle Wilhelm. He was a lifelong resident of Dorrance and a heavy equipment operator in Russell County. He also served as fire chief of Dorrance and was a member of the Kansas State Fire Fighters Association and the First Lutheran Church of Dorrance. He married Joyce Ehrlich July 29, 1985, at Dorrance. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Joe Sellens and wife Nita of Auburn and Mark Sellens of Culver; a daughter, Teresa David and husband Keith of Dorrance; his mother, Helen Wilhelm of Dorrance; a brother, Don of Dorrance; two sisters, Kathy Burns and Debbie Douglas, both of Salina; and seven grandchildren. Guy Casper (1907-2003)
EL DORADO — Guy Casper, 96, died Thursday, Nov. 6, at the Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. Mr. Casper was born April 6, 1907, at Dorrance to Charles and Clara Miller Casper. In 1930, he moved from Ellsworth to El Dorado, where he was a heavy equipment operator for Ellis Heavy Equipment, Banks Construction and other contractors. He also was the former owneroperator of Dale’s Service Station. He married Mary Agnes Shiroky May 14, 1979. She died Jan. 21, 1979. He married Reta Good Dodson Feb. 14, 1980. She survives. He also was preceded in death by his parents, a son, six brothers and two sisters. He is survived by many nieces and nephews. The graveside service was Monday at the Wilson City Cemetery. Hazel Beatty (1898-2003)
RUSSELL — Hazel Beatty, 105, died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003 at the Main Street Manor, Russell. Mrs. Beatty was born Feb. 2, 1898, on the family farm near Waldo. She later moved to Ellsworth, where she attended the Methodist Church, and in 1963 to Russell, where she was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. She married Ralph Preston Beatty Nov. 29, 1917. He died in 1978. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Vivian Szambecki; a brother, Harold Pangburn; and a sister, Mildred Facinelli. Survivors include two daughters, Betty Adcock of Honolulu, Ha., and Ellen Blythe of Ellsworth; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. The funeral was Monday at Pohlman-Heise Memorial Chapel, Russell, the Rev. Carl Ellis officiating. Burial was in the Grand Center Cemetery, Waldo. Leda Desbrow (1908-2003)
Leda Desbrow, 95, died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, at the Wilson Nursing Home. Mrs. Desbrow was born Feb. 2, 1908, at Clyde to Ed and Delia LeClaire Beauregard. She moved from Salina to Ellsworth in 1978. She was a homemaker and retail clerk and a member of the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Ellsworth, and the Ladies Guild. She had lived in the Wilson Nursing Home the past 1 1/2 years. She was preceded in death by four sisters and a brother. Survivors include a niece, Nancy Shute of Ellsworth, a brother, Leo Beauregard of El Dorado; and several other nieces and nephews. The funeral was Monday at the St. Bernard’s Church, Father Daniel Scheetz officiating. Burial was Monday in the St. Concordia Catholic Cemetery, Concordia. Memorials may be made to the church. Carl H. Ploutz (1925-2003)
KANOPOLIS — Carl H. Ploutz, 78, Kanopolis, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at the Ellsworth County Medical Center, Ellsworth. Mr. Ploutz was born March 23, 1925 to Gottlieb and Amelia Richards Ploutz. He was a lifetime resident of Kanopolis, where he was retired as custodian for the Ellsworth- Kanopolis-Geneseo School District and as a farmer-stockman. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Harvey Merrill Post 329 of the American Legion at Kanopolis. He married Alice Bray Sept. 30, 1942, at Ellsworth. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Karl Ploutz of Kanopolis; three daughters, Anita Schwerdtfeger of Ellsworth, Linnea Beebe of Kanopolis and Janell Harris of Missouri; two sisters, Martha Root of Ellsworth and Alice McIlvain of Reno, Nev.; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Kenneth in 1977 and Robert in 2000 and a granddaughter, Kimberly Ploutz in 1982. The graveside service was Saturday in Kanopolis Cemetery, the Rev. WAKEFIELD — Helen M. Yarrow, 86, Wakefield, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at the Clay County Medical Center, Clay Center. Mrs. Yarrow was born Jan. 23, 1917, in Clay County to John Luther and Daisy Keys Rider. She studied nursing at Abilene Hospital and lived on a farm near Wakefield. She was a member of the Mizpah United Methodist Church, Gill EHU, Wakefield Library Club and Jolly Neighbor Club and was a volunteer at the Wakefield Museum. She married Warren Yarrow April 15, 1938 at Industry. He survives. Other survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Gayle Carswell of Ellsworth; a son and daughterin- law, Keith and Louise Yarrow of Wakefield; two brothers, Raymond Rider of Wakefield, and Richard Rider of Abilene; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Douglas, and a brother. The service was Saturday at the Mizpah United Methodist Church, the Rev. Steve Thaden officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. HUTCHINSON — Judith E. Barton, 68, Hutchinson, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, at the Anthony Community Care Center. Mrs. Barton was born Aug. 21, 1935, at Hutchinson to B.J. and Pauline E. Follick Pallister. She was a lifelong Hutchinson and Pretty Prairie resident, but had lived briefly in Ellsworth. She graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1953, and was a homemaker. She married Jimmie Dale Hornbeck May 31, 1956, in Hutchinson. He died in May 17, 1969. She married Robert L. Barton June 21, 1970, in South Hutchinson. He died in 1991. Survivors include two sons, Thomas L. Hornbeck and wife Gayle of Harper, and Paul E. Hornbeck of Fort Collins, Colo.; two daughters, Ginny Hornbeck of Haven, and Susan Hornbeck of Hutchinson; two stepsons, David Barton of Pretty Prairie, and Doug Barton of Stockton, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Kathy Fowler of Phoenix, Ariz., and Kristi Rohling of Nickerson; four grandchildren; and eight step grandchildren. Kermit C. McCoy (1926 – 2003)
Kermit C. McCoy, 77, Ellsworth, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Health Services, Baker City, Ore. Mr. McCoy was born April 1, 1926, at Iola to Carl A. and Lena Louise Kramer McCoy. He had lived in Ellsworth since 1963, and had worked as a heavy equipment and dirt contracting supervisor for the Sanore and Standard Construction Companies. He was a member of the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. He married Clara Young June 12, 1949, at Yates Center. She survives. Also surviving are five sons, Kermit of Olympia, Wash., Kirk of Salina, Kerry of Hutchinson, Kelly of Ellsworth, Kevin of Baker City, Ore.; and four grandchildren, Kurtis, Keri Melissa, Meghan Michele, and Kyle Matthew. RED OAK, Texas — Jack A. Pedigo, 58, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, at the Park View Care Center, Fort Worth, Texas. Mr. Pedigo was born Sept. 16, 1945, at Wichita, Kan., to John Newton and Mary Eunice Vaughn Pedigo. He lived in Red Oak, Texas, and was a former resident of Springtown, Texas. He was a member of the Community Life Church, Springtown. He was a commercial electrician for Walker Electrical (formerly Encompass). He married Billie Jean Blank Aug. 20, 1993, at Roanoke, Texas. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Shawn Pedigo, North Richland Hills, Texas; five daughters, Fawn Pedigo Lopez, Atlanta, Ga., Missy Haviland, Whitewater, Kan., Brenda Druecker, Inman, Kan., Bobbi Mossman, Santa Fe, N.M., and Carla Gilster, Red Oak, Texas; a brother, Jim Pedigo, Wichita; three sisters, Marjorie Griffith, Wichita, Karen Spellman, Weatherford, Texas, and Virginia Bell, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and 15 grandchildren. Services were Monday, Nov. 3, at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth, Kan., Pastor George Redington officiating. Burial was in First Baptist Church Cemetery, Lorraine, Kan. Memorials may be made to Castle Peak Hospice, Dallas, Texas; Community Life Church Building Fund, Springtown; or the Lorraine Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
Virginia Sue Salisbury (1943 – 2003)
STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — Virginia "Ginger" Sue Salisbury, 59, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, of complications from liver failure at Emory University Medical Center. Mrs. Salisbury was born Sept. 12, 1943, at Ellsworth, Kan. to Richard "Bud" and Lois Schneider. She was a graduate of Ellsworth High School and a homemaker. She taught Sunday school for more than 25 years, and was active in volunteer work. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Atlanta, Ga. She married Stan Salisbury in 1966. He survives. Other survivors include a son, Richard of Bloomington, Ind.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Stacia and Erick Gregoire of Alexandria, Va., and Stephanie and Ray Gilbert of Fort Drum, N.Y.; her mother of Ellsworth; a sister, Patsy Kelly of Springfield, Mo.; a brother, Robyn “Rob” Schneider of Chicago, Ill.; and three grandchildren. Services were Oct. 22 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Atlanta. The body was cremated. Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 1410 Ponce de Leon Ave., N.E., Atlanta, Ga. 30307.
