Marion B. Kanak (1919-2004)
Marion B. Kanak, 85, died Saturday, July 10, 2004, at the Salina Regional Health Center. Mrs. Kanak was born Feb. 20, 1919, at Ellsworth, to William E. and Grace Allen Sheridan. She was a lifetime resident of Ellsworth, a homemaker, and had been secretary for the First Presbyterian Church, where she was a member, and Ellsworth hospital. She married Ivan Thomas Kanak Feb. 24, 1941, at Brookville. He died Dec. 30, 1979. She also was preceded in death three brothers and three sisters. Survivors include four sons, Ivan Jr. and Gary of Maysville, Mo., Norman of Grant City, Mo., and John of Ellsworth; a daughter, Cheryl of Las Vegas, Nev.; two sisters, Eleanor Bach of Manhattan, and Shirley Kepka of Ellsworth; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Services were Wednesday at the church, Pastor Leonard Goering officiating. Burial was in Ellsworth Memorial Cemetery. Chester Nienke (1923-2004)
HOLYROOD — Chester Nienke, 80, died Friday, July 9, 2004, at the Mitchell County Hospital, Beloit. Mr. Nienke was born Oct. 23, 1923 at Kanopolis to Frederick and Mata Erhardt Nienke He was a lifetime resident of Holyrood and Ellsworth County where he was owner/operator of Chet Nienke Lease Service, an oil field contractor. He was a member of American Legion 200 and the St. Peter Lutheran Church, both in Holyrood, a past mayor of Holyrood and a former member of school board and the Holyrood City Council. He married Wanda Fern Strange May 24, 1946, at Lincoln. She died in 1978. He also was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Helen Haase, Emma Nienke and Nelda Taylor; and brothers Raymond and Leonard Nienke. Survivors include three daughters, Sheila Fankhauser of Garden City, Barbara Hogan of Jamestown, N.D., and Janet Kempke of Ellsworth; two brothers, Amos Nienke of Wichita and Ervin Nienke of Holyrood; a sister, Lola Vidrickson of Salina; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson. The funeral was Monday at the St. Peter Lutheran Church, Pastor John Sharp officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with military rites by members of the Holyrood American Legion. Jane Veazey (1936-2004)
ST. CHARLES, Mo. — Jane Veazey, 68, died Saturday, July 10, 2004, at the St. Joseph Hospital West Lake, St. Louis, Mo. Mrs. Veazey was born Jan. 17, 1936, at Ellsworth, Kan., to Earl W. and LouBelle Bryan Shoemaker. She was a CRT operator for 27 years for First Data Corp, Bridgeton, Mo., and a member of Communications Workers of America and NRA. Survivors include a son, Terry Lynn Veazey of Peoria, Ariz.; two daughters, Tonia Casetta of St. Charles, and Teresa Sue Sauvain of Ellsworth; two sisters, Joan Hoss of Geneseo, Kan., and Joyce Petersen of Concordia, Kan.; and two grandsons. The funeral will be Friday at the United Methodist Church, Ellsworth, Pastor Jim Newkirk officiating. Burial will be in Buckeye Cemetery, rural Kanopolis. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today (Thursday) at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth. Tina Deiser (1983-3004)
Tina Deiser, 20, Ellsworth, died Friday, July 2, 2004, in South Dakota as the result of an automobile wreck. Mrs. Deiser was born Dec. 11, 1983, at Salina to Steve and Donna Ford Schneider. She lived most of her life in Ellsworth, where she was graduated in 2002 from Ellsworth High School. She received a degree in nursing this spring from Barton County Community College, Great Bend. She was a registered nurse at the Good Samaritan Retirement Village. She married Butch Deiser March 8, 2003, in Ellsworth. He survives. Other survivors include her parents; three sisters, Heather Simms of Lincoln, Amanda Schneider of Kansas City, and Jessica Schneider of Ellsworth; the paternal grandparents, Vernon and Elfrieda Schneider of Lucas; the maternal grandparents, Earl and Darlene Ford of Huron, S.D.; and the maternal great-grandmother, Ione Kolousek of Wessinton Springs, S.D. The funeral is 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Pastor Richard Andrus officiating. Burial will be in Ellsworth Memorial Cemetery. Beatrice Farber (1912-2004)
WaKEENEY — Beatrice Farber, 92, WaKeeney, died Saturday, June 26, 2004. Mrs. Farber was born Beatrice Brozek on May 12, 1912, in Wilson. She owned and operated the Kent Cafe in Hoxie. She was preceded in death by her husband, Beryl, in 1971; and two greatgrandchildren. Survivors include a son, Garey McGuire of Colby; a daughter, Iola Liester of Hoxie; a brother, Emanuel Brozek of Kanopolis; two sisters, Olga Blazina of Kanopolis and Helen Blazina of Hutchinson; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. YODER, Colo. — Michael Alamore Ouellette, 41, Yoder, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004. Mr. Ouellette was born Feb. 1, 1963, in Concordia, Kan. Survivors include his wife, Lycrecia of the home; his children, Tyrell, Tonnica and Tennille, all of the home; his mother, Patty Ouellette; five sisters, Kathleen Koehn of Wichita, Kan., Karen Stefek of Ellsworth, Kan., Reeta McCumber of Salina, Kan., Deneen Barnes of Clifton, Kan., and Geri Bogart of Concordia; and a brother, Marlin of Clyde, Kan. Amelia Branda (1907-2004)
WILSON — Amelia Branda, 97, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at the Wilson Nursing Center. Mrs. Branda was born Aug. 9, 1907, at Black Wolf to James and Mary Jech Votruba. She was a lifetime resident of the Wilson area, where she was a homemaker and a member of the Kansas Czechs and the Wilson Czech Opera House. She married Adolph Branda Aug. 8, 1929, in Ellsworth. He died in 1989. Survivors include a daughter, Ida Mae Goodman of Derby; a son, Donald Branda of Hays; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. The graveside service was Tuesday in the Wilson City Cemetery, the Rev. Delbert Stanton officiating. Memorials may be made to the Wilson Czech Opera House. Victor F. Klema (1914-2004)
WILSON — Victor F. Klema, 89, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at the Ellsworth County Medical Center, Ellsworth. Mr. Klema was born Nov. 16, 1914, in the Hell Creek area of Wilson Lake to John A. and Agnes Stehno Klema. He was reared in Kanopolis and owned the grocery store in Holyrood from 1936-49. He later was involved in real estate sales in Mesa, Ariz. Mr. Klema, a U.S. Army veteran who served in World War II, was a member of American Legion Post 200 and Masonic Lodge 343, both of Holyrood. He married Velma C. Valenta Aug. 24, 1937, at Wilson. She survives. Other survivors include three brothers, Richard of Portersville, Calif., Johnny of Great Bend and Arthur of Wilson; and three sisters, Mildred Katzenmeier and Adeline Bartunek, both of Ellsworth, and Shirley Krug of Spring Hill, Fla. He was preceded in death by a brother, Rudy. The funeral was Friday at the Foster Mortuary Chapel, Pastor Kristine Bair officiating. Burial was in Wilson City Cemetery with graveside rites by the American Legion and Masonic Lodge. Laura Frances ‘Fran’ Norris
WICHITA — Laura Frances “Fran” Norris, 66, formerly of Ellsworth, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004. She was the retired office manager of Hearne & Eppright Law firm, Wichita. Survivors include her husband, Charles; a son, Todd Norris of Springfield, Mo.; two daughters, Tammy Shanahan, Lee’s Summit, Mo., and Michelle Walter of Wichita; a brother, Allen Pickens of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and seven grandchildren. Kevin D. Shaw (1955-2004)
Kevin D. Shaw, 48, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at the Ellsworth County Medical Center. Mr. Shaw was born Aug. 28, 1955 in Ellsworth to George and Joan Price Shaw. He lived in Ellsworth most of his life, the exception being a short time in Enid, Okla. He was a TAC officer and jailer at the Ellsworth County Sheriff’s Department and a former Ellsworth County EMT and owner of Mister Muffler Shop in Enid. He was a member of the Kansas State Sheriffs’ Association. He married Valerie Moore Nov. 27, 1977 in Las Vegas, Nev. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Brian of Dallas, Texas; a brother, Warren Shaw of Ellsworth; three sisters, Caroline Nowlin of Kanopolis, Nancy Cumberland of Bennington and Lorna Atkins of Iola; and his parents of Ellsworth. He was preceded in death by a sister, Barb Salyers in 1978. The funeral is today (Thursday) at 10 a.m. at Parsons Funeral Home, Pastor Exie Barber officiating. Burial is in Kanopolis Cemetery. Miles W. Vasko (1911-2004)
WILSON - Miles W. Vasko, 93, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004 at the Ellsworth County Medical Center, Ellsworth. Mr. Vasko was born June 5, 1911, on the family farm northeast of Wilson to Joseph and Anna Dolezal Vasko. He was a farmer-stockman in the Wilson area most of his life and a self-taught accordion player. He married Alma A. Doubrava June 22, 1937, in Ellsworth. She survives in the Beverly Health Center at Lucas. Other survivors include a son, Larry of Wilson; a daughter, Patty Lynn Seifers of Eagle, Colo.; a sister, Betty Janousek of Ellsworth; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Irene LaFave, Verna Mattas and Cecelia Barta; and a brother, Leo Vasko. The funeral was Saturday at Pohlman-Heise Memorial Chapel, Russell. Darrell Dewaine Inscho Sr. (1929-2004)
CULVER — Darrell Dewaine Inscho Sr., 74, Culver, died Saturday, July 31, 2004. Mr. Inscho was born Nov. 2, 1929, in Delphos to Floyde and Stella Kosar Inscho. He was a graduate of Delphos High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On March 11, 1973, he married Lou Ann Munger in Salina. Mr. Inscho worked for Allied Van Lines (McCune-Bird Van and Storage) and retired from Tony’s Pizza Service in 1991, as a supervisor after 15 years of service. He was a member of the Girl Scouts of America and the Culver United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and a stepgreat-grandson, Cody. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Darrel D., Jr., of Culver and Jerry of Ellsworth; two daughters, Ronda Petty of Kinsley and Heather Inscho of Culver; a stepdaughter, Darla Corrin of Grand Blanc, Mich.; a brother, Corky Inscho of Grand Blanc, Mich.; a sister, Joy Lamar of Wells; two stepsisters, Rita Taggart of El Dorado and Barbara Jean Imperi of Salina; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren. Hannah Ella Nabholz (1904-2005)
HOLYROOD — Hannah Ella Nabholz, 99, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004 at the Ellsworth County Medical Center. Mrs. Nabholz was born Sept. 24, 1904, at Holyrood to John Henry and Ella Wihelmina Kottmann Stoltenberg. She lived most of her life in Holyrood, where she was a homemaker and a clerk at Frevert’s Dry Goods and Grocery Store. She was a member of the St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, and the church Women’s Guild, of which she was a past treasurer. She also was an adult Sunday school teacher. She married Joseph P. Nabholz Sept. 28, 1930, at Holyrood. He died in 1966. She also was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters. Survivors include a niece, Arleen Craig of Lorraine and many other nieces and nephews. The funeral was Monday at the St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Pastor Deborah Rains officiating. SYLVAN GROVE — Juanita Irene Urban, 81, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004. Mrs. Urban was born Feb. 24, 1923, at Slick, Okla.. She was a homemaker and nurse’s aide. Survivors include her husband, Doyle Urban of Sylvan Grove; two daughters, Sharon Ringler of Sylvan Grove and Linda Cox of Claflin; two brothers, George Corbett of Broomfield, Colo., and Bill Corbett of Cody, Wyo.; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was a homemaker who lived the last 17 years in Ellsworth County. Survivors include two daughters, Debbie A. Mog of Holyrood and Linda Bishop of Ellsworth; three sons, George Hysong of Ellsworth, Victor Valdez of Upland, Calif., and Arthur Hysong of Pittsburg, Pa.; a sister, Lucy Martinez of Albuquerque, N.M., a brother, Manuel Valdez Jr. of Albuquerque; 19 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Patsy Valdez in 1957; a son, Lloyd Valdez in 1996; and a granddaughter, Shay Mog in 1998. Vlasta L. Barta Williamson (1905-2004)
Vlasta L. Barta Williamson, 99, Ellsworth, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Retirement Village. Mrs. Williamson was born April 3, 1905, in Barton County to Frank and Sophia Sekavec Doubrava. She lived most of her life in Ellsworth County, except for a short time in Ogden, Utah. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She married George J. Barta June 3, 1925 in Ellsworth He died in 1951 In 1953 she married Frank Williamson also in Ellsworth He died in 1993 She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Marjorie Thompson in 2002 and three great grandchildren. Survivors include two sons, George J. of Jewell and Kenneth of Ellsworth; three daughters, Kathryn Dees and Vivian Peppiatt, both of Ellsworth, and Rosemary Morris of Woodland, Utah; 22 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Ronald ‘Ron’ R. Brooks (1959-2004)
CONCORDIA — Ronald “Ron” R. Brooks, 45, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at Via Christi St. Francis, Wichita. Mr. Brooks was born March 24, 1959, in Concordia to Charles Everette and Barbara Marie Hanson Brooks. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and later worked as a maintenance worker for the City of Concordia at the baseball fields. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous and also volunteered his time to assist with his children’s sports activities, including kids’ wrestling. He was a member of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Concordia. He married Avis Shuler Oct. 4, 1980 at Concordia. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Melissa Brooks of Concordia; two sons, Shaun of Concordia and Seth Clyde; a sister, Rhonda Brooks of Concordia; four brothers, James of Wichita, Mike of Ellsworth, Chuck of Sawyer, N.D. and Bob of Salina; and a grandchild. Harold F. Greenwood (1911-2004)
MADISON — Harold F. Greenwood, 93, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at the Mitchell County Hospital, Beloit. Mr. Greenwood was born June 11, 1911, on a family farm west of Madison to Frank and Clara Harris Greenwood. He worked 32 years for Kaw Pipeline in Chase, Claflin and Russell. In 1981, he returned to Greenwood County and a family farm. He was a 60-year member of Madison Masonic Lodge 196, the Consistory in Sterling, the Knights Templar in Hutchinson and the Madison United Methodist Church. He married Olive Carpenter of Hamilton Dec. 25, 1937. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Ron of Wilson; a daughter, Linda Bartlett of Las Cruces, N.M.; a brother, Morris of Madison; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Harold ‘Peck’ Ranker (1927-2004)
Harold “Peck” Ranker, 77, Ellsworth, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at the Ellsworth County Medical Center. Mr. Ranker was born May 8, 1927, in Ellsworth to Gustavis and Emma Schroeder Ranker. He was a lifetime resident of Ellsworth, where he was the former owner of City Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II, and a member of Masonic Lodge 146, and VFW Post 6485. He also was a volunteer firefighter. He married Rosalie Panzer June 1, 1950, at Ellsworth. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Randy Ranker of Ellsworth; a daughter, Trudy Lund of Assaria; a brother, Duke Ranker of Ellsworth; a sister, Genevieve Macek of Ellsworth; and five grandchildren. SALINA — Alice Virginia Stephen, 98, died Saturday, July 31, 2004. Mrs. Stephen was born Alice Virginia O’Neal April 24, 1906, in Stove, Mo. She was a retired telephone operator for Bell Telephone. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard E., in 1980 and a son, Neal, in 2001. Survivors include two daughters, Jean Johnson of Salina and Judy Toman of Ellsworth; a sister, Elinor Sullivan of Denver; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Janice Stoll (1937-2004)
RICE LAKE, Wisc. — Janice S. Stoll, 66, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at the Lakeview Medical Center in Rice Lake. Mrs. Stoll was born Aug. 3, 1937, at Abbyville to Lawrence and Myra Harvey Cassidy. She was graduated from Langdon High School and Kansas State Teachers College. She taught second and third grades for five years, receiving the Teacher of the Year Award in 1967. She lived in Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado before moving to Rice Lake in 1984, where she and her husband, James, owned and operated J&J Car Wash for 20 years. They were married June 16, 1973. He survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Deana Caron of Wausau, Wisc.; a son, Michael Stoll of Rice Lake; three sisters, Patricia Sorem of Corvallis, Ore., Barbara Kraft of Denver, Colo., and Nancy Stonebraker of Ellsworth, Kan.; and two grandchildren. Taylor Matthew Bradbury (1988-2004)
WINFIELD — Taylor Matthew Bradbury, 16, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Winfield. Taylor was born June 13, 1988 in Winfield to Matt and Kay Spillman Bradbury. His family moved to Iowa later that year before returning to Winfield in 1999. He was a sophomore at Winfield High School, where he served on the student council and participated in the Mid- America Youth Basketbll program. Survivors include his parents, Kay Waller and husband, Randy, and Matt Bradbury and wife, Laura, all of Winfield; a sister, Sierra Bradbury of Winfield; his grandparents, Bob and Kay Bradbury of Winfield and Irvin and Avis Spillman of Ellsworth, Jim and Charlotte Buterbaugh of Winfield and Colleen Waller of Wichita; his step-brothers, Randy and Richard Waller, a stepsister, Lindsay Johnson; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. The funeral was Saturday in the Winfield High School auditorium. Private family inurnment ceremonies will be conducted at a later date.
