GREAT BEND — Gertrude A. Newsome, 95, Great Bend, died Sunday, June 17, 2007. Mrs. Newsome was born Gertrude A. Stratmann May 5, 1912, at Holyrood. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil, in 1965; a son, Norman; a daughter, Deloris Orth; and two grandchildren. Survivors include a son, Harold C. Newsome of York, Neb.; two daughters, Barbara Ann Randolph of Salina and Nancy Schukman of Casper, Wyo.; a brother, Clarence Stratmann of Wilson; a sister, Edna Pflughoeft of Ellsworth; 16 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. The funeral was June 21 at Bryant Funeral Home, 1425 Patton, Great Bend, Kan., 67530. Burial was in Great Bend Cemetery. Alice W. Pekarek (1919-2007)
WILSON — Alice W. Pekarek, 87, Wilson, died Saturday, June 23, 2007. Mrs. Pekarek was born Alice W. Farrington Sept. 8, 1919, in Lincoln County. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest W., in 1982. Survivors include two daughters, Janet Swafford of Plainville and Rita Stephens of Claflin; and four grandchildren. The funeral was Tuesday at Foster Mortuary, Box 533, Wilson 67490. Burial was in Wilson City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Wilson Senior Center, in care of the mortuary.

Kenneth D. Barta (1937-2007)
HOLYROOD — Kenneth D. Barta, 69, Holyrood, died Saturday, June 16, 2007, at the Ellsworth County Medical Center. Mr. Barta was born Sept. 25, 1937, in Ellsworth County to Ernest and Frances Mattas Barta. He was a lifetime resident of the Holyrood area, where he was an oil pumper for BLG at Russell and a farmer-stockman. He also was a veteran of the U.S. Army who served in Vietnam. He was a member of the Holyrood American Legion. He married Mary Haley Dec. 30, 1960, at Claflin. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Laura Montoya and Chary Warner, both of Holyrood; a brother, Dale Barta of Lincoln; a sister, Diane Zeman of Ellsworth; a grandson, David Zajic; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Joshua Warner, in 2000; and a sister, Alice Barta, in 1938. The funeral was Tuesday at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Holyrood, Father David Metz officiating. Burial was in Palacky Cemetery, rural Holyrood, with American Legion graveside rites. Memorials may be made to the Holyrood American Legion. Delbert Dean Borman (1935-2007)
WICHITA — Delbert Dean Borman, 72, Wichita, died Sunday, June 17, 2007. Mr. Borman was born Feb. 10, 1935, at Dorrance to Del and Genevieve Borman, who lived in Ellsworth before their deaths. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy with service in the Korean War. He was a truck driver and later managed the Golden Plains Motel at Oakley. Survivors include his wife, Dee, of the home; two sons, Monty of Minneapolis and Kevin of Valley Center; a daughter, Starla Philbrick of San Antonio, Texas; two brothers, Larry of Winfield and Duane of Morrill; two step-daughters, Kim Albright of Wichita and Shelly Palmer of Beloit; two step-sons, Rick Armstrong of Mesa, Ariz., and Brad Armstrong of Salina; 18 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Broadway Mortuary Chapel, Wichita. Visitation with family is from 6 to 8 p.m. today (Thursday), also at the mortuary. Cori L. Sieger(1990-2007)
GAASTRA, Mich. — Cori L. Sieger, 16, died May 27, 2007, at the Iron County Community Hospital as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Ms. Sieger was born June 9, 1990, in Fond du lac, Wisc., the daughter of Orville and Colleen (Buxton) Sieger. She was a junior at West Iron County High School. She was preceded in death by a half-brother, Scott Bunch; a half-sister, Christina Bunch; her maternal grandparents, Charles and Mildred Buxton; and paternal great-grandparents, Tony and June Jaster. Survivors include her parents, Orville and Collen Sieger; a brother, Justin Sieger of the home; paternal grandparents Mary and Jim Jaster of Theresa, Wisc. and Orville Sieger of Oshkosh, Wisc.; aunts and uncles Sara and Rick Howe, Fond du lac, Wisc., Ivan and Betty Hoosier, Dale Hoosier of Ellsworth, Cindy Villarreal, Matt and Cole Hoosier; special family friends “Grandpa and Grandma” Jim and Peggy Pruitt of Ellsworth. Memorials can be made to a special scholarship fund established in Ms. Sieger’s memory at the West Iron County High School, Iron River, Mich.

Adolph James Soukup (1927-2007)
NEVADA, Mo. — Adolph James Soukup, 80, Nevada, died Saturday, June 16, 2007, at Freeman Health System West, Joplin, Mo. Mr. Soukup was born May 18, 1927, in Kanopolis, Kan., to Adolph J. and Mildred Vondra Soukup. He was 10 years old when his family moved to Nevada. He served in the U.S. Army and worked as a mechanic for 35 years for Northern National Gas (later Enron) in Kansas, Minnesota and Iowa. He returned to Nevada following his retirement in 1984. He was a member of American legion Post 2, Nevada. He married Mary E. Raddy March 8, 1947, at Fort Scott, Kan. She survives. Other survivors include s son, James F. of Lonsdale, Minn; two granddaughters; a great-grandson; two half-sisters; and two half-brothers. The funeral was at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, Father Joseph Powers officiating. Burial was in Moore Cemetery, Nevada, with military honors. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association in care of the funeral home.

Harold John Steinbach (1922-2007)
WICHITA — The Rev. Harold John Steinbach, 84, died Saturday, June 16, 2007, at his home in Wichita. Mr. Steinbach was born Oct. 8, 1922, near Clay Center to Fred and Elizabeth Heilman Steinbach. He served three years in the U.S. Army and was graduated from Salina’s Kansas Wesleyan University in 1950. He also attended Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Ky., and was graduated from Drew Theological Seminary, Madison, N.J., in 1953. His first full-time appointment was at the United Methodist churches in Wilson and Dorrance. During his 42-year ministry, he conducted 562 funerals and 382 weddings. He married Velma Marie Mugler May 27, 1953. She died in 1995. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Milton in 1994 and Clarence in 1997. Survivors include three children, Sharon Shaub of Wichita, Stephen of Lawrence and Mark of Providence, R.I.; and six grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Asbury Theological Seminary in care of DeVorss Flanagan-Hunt Mortuary, 201 S. Hydraulic, Wichita 67211.

Barbara Jean Miller (1924-2007)
HUTCHINSON — Barbara Jean Miller, 82, Hutchinson, died Friday, June 1, 2007, at the Hospice House. Mrs. Miller was born Dec. 17, 1924, at St. Joseph, Mo., to Paul F. and Sidney H. Schuck Smith. A graduate of Kanopolis High School, she was a long-time resident of Hutchinson, where she was a homemaker, employee of Dillons and the Hutchinson Recreation Commission, a member of the First Presbyterian Church, and volunteer at the Good Samaritan Center. She married M. Adrian “Whitey” Miller Sept. 2, 1944. He died in 2005. Also preceding Mrs. Miller in death was her sister, Shirley Smith. Survivors include two sons, Jon Miller and his companion Brent Cummings of Seattle, Wash., and Bill Miller and his wife, Kathy, of Dubuque, Iowa; one daughter, Sue Winegardner of Hutchinson; and one grandson, Nicholas Miller of Dubuque, Iowa. The funeral was June 5 at the First Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Tim Soule officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. John J. ‘Johnny’ Helus(1923-2007)
John J. “Johnny” Helus, 83, Ellsworth, died Friday, June 1, 2007, at Harry Hymes Memorial Hospice in Wichita. Mr. Helus was born Aug. 24, 1923, at Wilson to John and Mary Kaitman Helus. He was a private first class in the U.S. Marine Corps, seeing action during World War II at Tarawa, Saipan and Iwo Jima. He received the Purple Heart and Gold Star for his service. He was a lifetime resident of Ellsworth, where he was a retired postal clerk at the Ellsworth Post Office. Mr. Helus was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, American Legion Post 174 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6485, all at Ellsworth, and a retired volunteer firefighter with the Ellsworth Fire Department. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf and all sports. He married Pat McCleary July 17, 1946, at Carson City, Nev. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Randy Helus of Ellsworth and Ron Helus and his wife, Sherry, of Wamego; a daughter, Kristi Erbert and her fiance, Steve Logue, of Derby; a brother, Paul Helus and wife, Wini, of Topeka; six grandchildren, Shawn Erbert (Candie), Rod Helus, Eric Erbert (Sarah), Darrin Erbert (Janiece), Ryan Helus and Ashlyn Helus; and two great-grandchildren, Cadence Erbert and Ayden Erbert. Mr. Helus was preceded in death by a daughter, Candy, in 1964, five sisters and one brother. The funeral was June 4 at the First Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth, the Rev. Nathan Loudon officiating. Burial was in Ellsworth Cemetery, with military honors by the U.S. Marine Corps. Memorials may be made to the oncology departments of the Heartland Cancer Center, Great Bend, or the Hutchinson Clinic (to purchase DVD players for the patients to use while receiving chemotherapy treatments). George T. Fox (1907-2007)
ELLINWOOD — George T. Fox, 99, Ellinwood, died Monday, May 28, 2007, at the Ellinwood District Hospital. Mr. Fox was born Oct. 6, 1907, at Ellsworth to William C. and Gladys Flanders Fox. He was a long-time resident of Ellinwood, where he was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ and Masonic Lodge 217. He worked in the Navy ship yard in Philadelphia, Pa., in plumbing and heating and retired from the state at the Fort Dodge Soldiers Home. He married Gladys Vosburg Feb. 22, 1936, at Salina. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Karen I. Ringering of Ellinwood and Joanie M. Boger of Tempe, Ariz.; two brothers, Kenneth and Torrey, both of Ellsworth; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today (Thursday) at Kimple Funeral Home, Ellinwood. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Immanuel United Church of Christ, the Revs. Larry Young and Paul Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Lakin-Comanche Cemetery, Ellinwood. Memorials may be made to the Area Health Care Foundation X-ray, Ellinwood.

Irene Johnson (1907-2007)
TOPEKA — Irene Johnson, 99, Topeka, died Sunday, May 20, 2007. Mrs. Johnson was born Nov. 23, 1907, at Ellsworth to Otto and Margaretha Grosnick Schulz. She was a Topeka resident from 1936 to 2004. She taught in Lutheran schools in Alma and Topeka and was a charter member of the Faith Lutheran Church, Topeka. She also was a Sunday school teacher and a Girl Scout leader. She married Clarence Johnson Nov. 23, 1935, at Colorado Springs, Colo. He died in 1983. Survivors include a son, Larry Johnson, and wife, Joan, of Albuquerque, N.M.; a daughter, Marlene Markley, and husband, Walter, of Derby; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A memorial service was May 24 at the Faith Lutheran Church, 1716 SW Gage Blvd., Topeka 66604. Burial was in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the church. Keith Allen Loper(1958-2007)
LUCAS — Keith Allen Loper, 48, Lucas, died Monday, May 28, 2007, at the Ellsworth County Medical Center after a courageous battle with cerebral palsy. Mr. Loper was born June 12, 1958, at Ellsworth to George Henry and Gertrude Anna Zorn Loper. He grew up in Bunker Hill and moved to Lucas in 1984. He was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Russell. Survivors include two sisters and their husbands, Sharilyn and Leonard Maberry of Ellinwood and Sherith and Loren Zelenka of Ellsworth; a brother-in-law, Larry Newton of Goodman, Mo.; an uncle, Larry Hoke; an aunt, Leona Robinson; and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Larry Don Loper and Marvel Dean Loper; and a sister, Betty Newton. The graveside serve will be at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Russell. Visitation was from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, Russell, with the family present to greet friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to Golden LivingCenter, Lucas.

Dennis J. Bunker (1938-2007)
WILSON — Dennis J. Bunker, 69, Wilson, died Sunday, May 13, 2007. Mr. Bunker was born Jan. 30, 1938, at Wilson to William and Caroline Kaufman Bunker. He was a lifetime resident of Wilson, where he worked as an outside plant superintendent for Wilson Telephone Co. for 37 years before his retirement. He also was a member of the National Guard for 27 years. He also was a member of the Wilson Fire Department for 25 years, the Wilson Lions Club, Sumaria Lodge 298, the Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Isis Shrine at Salina. He married Maureen Betz April 3, 1959, at Clayton, N.M. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Krystal Pickering and husband, Randall, of Barnard; three sons, Randal and a friend, Charles Burch, of Salina, Ron and wife Kristine of Aspinwall, Iowa, and Robin and wife Jenny of Manning, Iowa; three brothers, Duane and wife Jeane of Vassar, Delmar of Goodland and Dallas and wife Jonny of Salina; five grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and two brothers. The funeral was at 10:30 a.m. today (Thursday) at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Pastor Jim Wagner officiating. Rosaline B. Lyne (1915-2007)
Rosaline B. Lyne, 91, Ellsworth, died Tuesday, May 8, 2007, at the Good Samaritan Retirement Village. Mrs. Lyne was born Nov. 26, 1915, at Ellsworth to Adolph and Augusta Bohl Schultz. She was a lifetime resident of Ellsworth, where she was a homemaker and waitress at Charlotte’s Cafe. She was a member of the VFW auxiliary, the Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Ladies Aid. She married Russell Lyne May 24, 1936, at Ellsworth. He died in 1986. She also was preceded in death by a son, Virgil, in 1999; a daughter, Alvina Novotny, in 2000; and three grandchildren, D.J. in 2004, Beverly in 1971 and Steven in 1999. Survivors include a son, Donald Lyne of Ellsworth; seven daughters, Judy Blouin of Las Vegas, Nev., Janice Prochaska, Joyce Webb, Gloria Marez and Carol Kottman, all of Ellsworth, Shirley Behrens of Lincoln and Bertha Bontz of Peoria, Ill.; four brothers, Henry Schultz of Holyrood, Elden Schultz of Garden City, Adolph Schultz Jr. of Kanopolis and Floyd Schultz of Twenty-Nine Palms, Calif.; two sisters, LaVerna Mikulecky of Ellsworth and Velma Hubbard of Hobbs, N.M.; 32 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; and 24 great-great-grandchildren. The funeral was Saturday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Pastor Dennis Dufon officiating. Burial was in Ellsworth Cemetery. Walter F. Sippel(1930-2007)
ROXBURY — Walter F. Sippel, 76, Roxbury, died Wednesday, May 9, 2007. Mr. Sippel was born July 19, 1930, in Dickinson County. He was a farmer and had an excavating business. Survivors include his wife, Rose Mary of Roxbury; two sons, Rick of Ellsworth and Ron of Wichita; two daughters, Carol Christiansen of Ellsworth and Connie Screen of Abilene; and 10 grandchildren. The funeral was Tuesday at Roxbury Parish. Burial was in Eureka Cemetery, rural Gypsum. Memorials may be made to the church or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Walter W. ‘Corky’ Coffeen (1917-2007)
DORRANCE — Walter W. “Corky” Coffeen, 89, Dorrance, died Tuesday, May 1, 2007, at the Golden LivingCenter, Wilson. Mr. Coffeen was born June 5, 1917, at Dorrance to Frank and Adalia Branda Coffeen. He was a lifetime resident of Dorrance, where he operated Coffeen Barber Shop for 40 years. He was a lifetime member of Russell VFW Post 6240. He married Anna Branda Oct. 26, 1941, at Dorrance. Survivors include two daughters, Veldean Feil of Salina and Sharon Sprinkle of Hutchinson; a brother, Jack Coffeen of Russell; a sister, Ethel John of Russell; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ralph, Vern and John; and five sisters, Florence Cook, Leta Coffeen, Laura Heinze, Edith Friebus and Jill Dryden. The funeral was Saturday at Foster Mortuary Chapel, Sister Diane Wagner officiating. Burial was in Dorrance City Cemetery. Helen Curtis (1914-2007)
HOLYROOD — Helen Curtis, 92, Holyrood, died Sunday, May 6, 2007, at the Ellsworth County Medical Center. Mrs. Curtis was born Sept. 11, 1914, at Farmington, Utah, to George and Elizabeth Burns Stayner. In 1945, she moved to Holyrood, where she was a telephone operator. She married Arthur B. Curtis Dec. 10, 1952, at Midland, Texas. He died in 1999. She also was preceded in death by four brothers, Reed, David, Lavar and Burns; and a sister, Irene. Survivors include two daughters, Pamela Marquis of Ogallala, Neb., and Patricia Clark of Wichita; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A private memorial service is planned, Pastor Deborah Rains officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth, was in charge of arrangements.

Ira ‘Dean’ Ewing (1930-2007)
GENESEO — Ira “Dean” Ewing, 76, Geneseo, died Friday, May 4, 2007. Mr. Ewing was born Dec. 12, 1930, at Kanopolis to Thomas Henry and Iris Ulrickson Ewing. He moved to Geneseo in 1959. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and attended the University of Kansas. He was a retired rural mail carrier. He was a member of the First Christian Church and a past member of American Legion Post 241, both at Lyons; a former school board member and Geneseo city clerk, current Geneseo treasurer and a member of the Sons of American Legion, all at Geneseo; and a volunteer fire fighter for Geneseo and Lyons. He married Marcia Homan Feb. 8, 1958, at Great Bend. She survives. Also surviving are a son, Robert Ewing of Wichita; three daughters, Elizabeth Keen of Morrision, Okla., and Susan Ewing and Kathryn Ewing, both of Wichita; a brother, Dale Ewing of Larned; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Plank. The graveside service was Tuesday at the Geneseo Cemetery with military honors by McConnell Air Force Base. John W. Grubb (1926-2007)
GLENDALE, Ariz. — John W. Grubb, 80, died Monday, April 16, 2007, at his home in Glendale. Mr. Grubb was born Oct. 9, 1926, at Ellsworth, Kan. Survivors include his wife, Patricia, of the home; a sister, Betty Gwinner of Ellsworth; a daughter, Terri Nye of Phoenix, Ariz.; a son, Barry Grubb of Chandler, Ariz.; five step-children; two grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. The funeral was April 20 at the Happy Valley Baptist Church. Burial was in the National Cemetery of Arizona with military services.

Lt. Col. (Ret.) Arthur J. Sebesta (1919-2007)
HAWORTH, N.J. — Lt. Col. (Ret.) Arthur J. Sebesta, 87, Haworth, died Wednesday, May 2, 2007. Lt. Col. Sebesta was born Oct. 18, 1919, in Wilson, Kan. He was graduated from Wilson High School in 1939 and from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., in 1943. His career as an officer in the Signal Corps specialized in communications and counter-intelligence. In World War II, he was sent to Okinawa, Japan, where he headed communications intelligence support for area destroyers and aircraft carriers whose fighter pilots were targeted by the Japanese. He served stateside and in Germany, where he developed cryptologic security procedures adopted throughout the military services. In 1959, he became the post signal officer at West Point and retired from the Army in 1963. He later worked with various communication corporations, retiring from civilian work as a vice president at CBS. In retirement, he continued to work for veterans’ organizations, serving as president of the National Sojourners Chapter 86, commander of the New Jersey Disabled American Veterans Chapter 32 and treasurer of several other DAV chapters. He was a recipient of the Argonne Chapter 18 Man of the Year Award. He married Mary Morrison of Ellsworth, Kan., May 2, 1943. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Susan Clough of Ellsworth; a son, Art Sebesta of Winchester, Ky.; two brothers, Ernest and Joseph Sebesta; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis. A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. May 16 in the Old Cadet Chapel at West Point, N.Y. Memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, Fla. 33607, or to a charity of the donor’s choice. Moritz Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Floyd Joseph White (1916-2007)
KANOPOLIS — Floyd Joseph White, 90, Kanopolis, died Saturday, May 5, 2007, at Salina Regional Health Center. Mr. White was born Aug. 3, 1916, in rural Lincoln County to Lon William and Anna Marie Ahring White. He had lived in Kanopolis since 1945, where he was co-owner of White Construction Company. He also was a member of VFW Post 6485, Ellsworth; American Legion Post 329, Kanopolis; and the Kanopolis United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army with service during World War II. He married Florence Pauline Swisher Feb. 16, 1947, at Wilson. She survives. Other survivors are a son, Joe White of Kanopolis; a brother, Everett White of Lincoln County; four sisters, Fern Miley, Ann Leiker and Lola Short, all of Salina, and Delores Panzer of Lincoln County; a grandson; a step-grandson; two step-granddaughters; and seven step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul White. The funeral was at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth, Pastor Stephen Holmes officiating. Burial was in Kanopolis Cemetery. Memorials may be made to VFW Post 6485, American Legion Post 329 or the Kanopolis United Methodist Church.

B. Howard Baugher(1914-2007)
WILSON — B. Howard Baugher, 92, Wilson, died Thursday, April 26, 2007, at the Ellsworth County Medical Center. Mr. Baugher was born April 27, 1914, in Trego County to Walter C. and Susan Chalk Baugher. He was a lifetime resident of Trego and Ellsworth counties. He was a farmer-stockman and a member of the Wilson Lions Club and the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. He married Bernice Miller Oct. 20, 1936, at Ellis. She died in 1986. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Carole Gabel, in 2001. Survivors include three daughters, Janice Grauer of Meade, Colo., Nancy Sullivan of Battle Creek, Mich., and Linda Andrade of Liberal; a son, Keith Baugher of Salina; and 16 grandchildren. The funeral was Monday at the St. Wenceslaus Church, Fathers David Metz and Dan Scheetz officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Foster Mortuary, Wilson, was in charge of arrangements.
