Anita Holle (1917-2007)
Anita Adele Dorothea (Peterman) Holle, 89, was born May 19, 1917, at Ellsworth, the second daughter of Frank and Bertha Peterman. She was baptized June 24, 1917, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Ellsworth, and confirmed May 10, 1931, at her home church. On May 22, 1938, she was united in marriage to Albert Holle. They lived on a farm near Sylvan Grove for most of their married life, retiring to Ellsworth in 1974. She died Jan. 9, 2007, at the Ellsworth County Medical Center. Anita lived out her Christian faith in humble service to her Lord, her family and community. She was a faithful wife, loving mother and a devoted church worker. She served her communities as a 4-H leader and volunteer for senior citizen activities. Sewing and quilting for her family and friends brought her great joy. Preceding her in death were her husband, Albert; two sisters, Evelyn and Irene; and one brother, Leonard. She is survived by her children Marvin (Linda) Holle, Grand Junction, Colo.; Connie (Werner) Steinbach, Mayville, Wisc.; Sandy (Allen) Wedel, Ellsworth; and Teresa (Timothy) Walter, Millington, Mich.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Her brother, Clarence Peterman, lives in Ellsworth, and her sister, Betty Urbanek, lives in Azle, Texas. Funeral services were Jan. 15 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Ellsworth. Ernest E. ‘Ernie’ Leithoff (1948-2007)
JUNCTION CITY — Ernest E. “Ernie” Leithoff, 58, Junction City, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, at the Geary Community Hospital. Mr. Leithoff was born Nov. 14, 1948, at Ellsworth to Harry H. Jr. and Delma L. Gerbitz Leithoff. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam. He earned several medals, including the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He worked in Manhattan and Fort Riley DRMO, where he retired in 1999. He married Kyong Cha Kim May 15, 1980, in Japan. She survives. Other survivors include a son, David Leithoff of Herington; two sisters, Marlene Bright of Augusta, Ga., and Sue Romanelli of Junction City; a brother, Chuck Leithoff of Junction City; and two grandsons. The funeral was Saturday at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, Junction City, the Rev. Paul Wolf officiating. Burial will be at the Highland Cemetery with full military honors. Helen Shanelec (1911-2007)
Helen Shanelec, 95, Ellsworth, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, at the Ellsworth County Medical Center. Mrs. Shanelec was born March 5, 1911, in Chicago, Ill., to Anton and Rose Osman. She lived most of her life in Ellsworth, where she was the bookkeeper and co-owner of Shanelec Implement Co. She was a member of the ZCBJ Czech Lodge, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and the First United Methodist Church, Ellsworth. She married Will Shanelec Oct. 24, 1933, at Ellsworth. He died in 1992. Survivors include a step-brother, Joe Huna of Hutchinson; a niece, Gladys Wagner of Ellsworth; and a nephew, Frank Toman of Ellsworth. The funeral is at 10 a.m. today (Thursday) at the United Methodist Church, Pastor Linda Toms officiating. Burial is in Ellsworth Cemetery. Visitation was from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Parsons Funeral Home and from 8 a.m. to service time today (Thursday) at the church. Marvin J. Weightman (1913-2007)
GREAT BEND — Marvin J. Weightman, 93, Great Bend, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007. Mr. Weightman was born June 18, 1913, in Ellsworth County. He was district manager for 25 years for Dia-Log Company. Survivors include two daughters, Marva Miller of Hays and Marsha Jacobs of Great Bend; a son, Don of Loveland, Colo.; a sister, Norma Jean Bush of Emporia; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma, in 2005. The funeral was Tuesday at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Great Bend. Vivian A. Zamrzla (1949-2007)
RUSSELL — Vivian A. Zamrzla, 57, Russell, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, at Russell Regional Hospital. Mrs. Zamrzla was born Dec. 9, 1949, at Wilson to Joseph and Mary Ann Soukup Kasper. She was reared in Wilson and lived in Washington until 1980, when she moved to Russell. She was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She married James L. Zamrzla Aug. 17, 1988, in Reno, Nev. He survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Kimberley Ajax of Port Hadlock, Wash.; a son, Kirk Lakenes of Quilcene, Wash.; and two grandchildren. Marian Cunningham (1916-2006)
DENTON, Texas — Marian Cunningham, 90, Denton, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006. Mrs. Cunningham was born Marian Dewitt Dec. 31, 1916, in Ellsworth County, Kan. She was a retired certified medical assistant. Survivors include two daughters, Leslie Cunningham and Barbara Hettinger, both of Denton; two sisters, Gertrude Small of Oxford, Kan., and Jane Smith of North Platte, Neb.; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Marion L. ‘Mac’ Miller (1938-2007)
Marion L. “Mac” Miller, 68, Ellsworth, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, at the Via Christi-St. Francis Medical Center, Wichita. Mr. Miller was born Feb. 14, 1938, in Duvall County, Texas, to Marion L. Sr. and Clarie Glass Miller. He grew up in Dallas and lived most of his later life in Kansas. He was a store clerk at the Ellsworth County Medical Center and a member of the Lions Club and the United Methodist Church. He married Mary Ravenkamp Oct. 20, 1979. She survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Lisa Howell of Rawlins, Wyo., Heidi Miller of Linn Creek, Mo., and Maria Meier of Ellsworth; three sons, Stewart Miller of Rock Springs, Wyo., Marion L. “Trey” Miller III of Mascoutah, Ill., and Richard Wright of Lawrence; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The funeral was Friday at the United Methodist Chuch, Pastor Linda Toms officiating. Burial was in Ellsworth Memorial Cemetery. Sarah DeAnn Weber (1960-2007)
OLATHE — Sarah DeAnn Weber, 46, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, at the Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, Mo. Mrs. Weber was born March 7, 1960, in Milan, Mo., to Gerald and Nadine Nowlin Pauley. She was raised in Newton, Mo., and received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1982 from Truman State University, Kirksville, Mo. She worked at the Bank of Holyrood, where she was promoted to vice president and cashier in charge of the bank’s operations. Following her marriage Aug. 1, 1987, to Timothy L. Weber of Holyrood, the couple moved to Olathe, where Mrs. Weber served as vice president and branch manager of several banks. In order to spend more time with her family, she changed career paths and went to work for Sprint in 1996 at Lenexa. She was a member of the Newtown Baptist Church and later the Grace Methodist Church, Olathe. She also was elected Worthy Adviser of the Newtown Auxiliary of Rainbow Girls, where she learned the importance of service, a practice she continued throughout her life. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Nicholas Blake Pauley of Merriam and Timothy Sean Weber of Olathe; her grandson, Ryan L. Bandy of Merriam; her parents, Gerald and Nadine Pauley of Holyrood; her parents-in-law, William and Lois Weber of Holyrood; her sisters, Karen Pauley of Sarasota, Fla., Carol Norris of Unionville, Mo., and Christina Oliver of Mons, Belgium; a brother, Gary Pauley of Holyrood; and a grandson. Sarah was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and a caring daughter, sister and aunt. Her most cherished times were with her family, and she was constantly preparing her sons for life’s challenges. Sarah enjoyed camping, biking, playing cards and attending Chiefs’ games with her family. Also, Sarah loved to travel, read, shop and eat her husband’s cooking. While her quick wit and sense of humor will be missed by all of us who knew her and loved her, it will surely bring a smile to those who have passed before us. Dr. Edward Vernon Williams (1912-2006)
MUSKEGON, Mich. — Dr. Edward Vernon Williams, 94, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, at the DeBoer Nursing Home, Muskegon. Dr. Williams was born May 13, 1912, in Ellsworth County, Kan., to Edward H. and Lillian Ellis Williams. He was a graduate of Ellsworth High School and the first African-American to receive a degree from the Kansas University School of Medicine in 1941. He also attended KU from 1931-35 for his undergraduate degree. At KU, he was selected for membership in Phi Beta Kappa honorary scholastic society and Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. After medical school, Dr. Williams served in the U.S. Army and was discharged in 1946 as a major in the medical corps. That also was the year he moved to Muskegon to practice medicine, a job that continued for more than 50 years. In 1991, he was honored by the medical school for his pioneering spirit and lifetime achievements. In Michigan, Dr. Williams was active in the State Board of Registration, the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, American Medical Association, Urban League of Greater Muskegon and the Phillip Chapel AME Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Thompson, and a brother, Claude Williams. The funeral was Jan. 5 at the Phillip Chapel AME Church, Muskegon Heights, Mich., Pastor Manual Haynes officiating. Burial was in the Mona View Cemetery, Muskegon. John V. Murray II (1949-2006)
HOLYROOD — John V. Murray II, 57, Holyrood, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, at Wichita. Mr. Murray was born Nov. 22, 1949, at Great Bend to John V. and Mercia “Dianne” Tattersall Murray. He moved back to the Holyrood area in 2001 after serving as vice president of the Jefferson Bank in Colorado and in the U.S. Army. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was vice commander of Holyrood American Legion Post 200 and a member of the Disabled Veterans of America. He married Barbara Svoboda Kice Dec. 23, 2006, in Wichita. She survives. Other survivors include his mother, of Holyrood; two daughters, Taverly Murray of Medon, Tenn., and Brittaney Murray of Starksville, Miss.; two step-sons, Adam Kice of Topeka and Jason Kice of Wichita; two sisters, Niki L. Murray of Hutchinson and Jackie Yager of Holyrood; and a step-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his father. John Sullivan (1938-2006)
GENESEO — John Sherman Sullivan, 68, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2006, at his home in rural Geneseo. Mr. Sullivan was born Nov. 16, 1938, in Potsdam, N.Y. to Edison and Frances Bushaw Sullivan. He moved to Ellsworth County 14 years ago from San Antonio, Texas. He was a retired machinist for the U.S. Air Force with college degrees in petroleum and machine technologies. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Lorraine. He married Eva Lou Kizzar July 27, 1961, in Center, Texas. She died in 1992. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Edison “Toot” Sullivan. Survivors include two sons, Stephen of Geneseo and Michael of Great Falls, Mont.; a daughter, Kelli Jo Long of Schertz, Texas; two brothers, Lawrence of Morrisville, N.Y., and Robert of Baldwinsville, N.Y.; two sisters, Margaret “Peggy” Radley and Carol Jones, both of Syracuse, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Robert L. Walters (1927-2006)
HOLYROOD — Robert L. Walters, 79, Holyrood, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006, at the Golden Living Center, Wilson. Mr. Walters was born Nov. 21, 1927, to Chester and Elizabeth Earnhart Walters. He was a graduate of Lorraine High School, production supervisor for City Service Oil and a longtime resident of Holyrood. He married Barbara Adamson Nov. 25, 1949, at McCracken. They divorced in 1963. Survivors include two sons, Gailand Walters of Lincoln and Richard Walters of Vista, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Grace Arensman (1940-2006)
KANOPOLIS — Grace E. Arensman, 66, Kanopolis, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2006, at the Salina Regional Health Center. Mrs. Arensman was born April 18, 1940, in Kansas City, Mo., to Phillip Thomas and Lena Virginia Lamberta Gravino. She lived most of her life at Kanopolis, where she was a homemaker and farmer and a member of the St. Ignatius Catholic Church. She also was a member of the EHU and American Legion Auxiliary, Kanopolis; and the VFW Auxiliary, Ellsworth. She married Melvin Arensman Nov. 11, 1961, at Kanopolis. He survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Lisa McQuade of Wichita; a son, Phillip Arensman of Wichita; a brother, Phillip A. Gravino of Miami, Fla.; and two grandchildren. Ambur Swisher, 29, Ellsworth, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2006, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan. She was born May 24, 1977, at Ellsworth to Rick and Alison Smith LaRose. She lived the last 2 1/2 years in Ellsworth, moving here from Norwood, N.Y. She was a homemaker. Survivors include her parents, of Ellsworth; a sister, Destiny Swisher of Gypsum; two brothers, Trent Swisher of Manchester and Matthew Swisher of Ellsworth; her maternal grandparents, Thayer and Kay Smith of Ellsworth; and nieces and nephews. Sharon L. Hoss (1944-2006)
KANOPOLIS — Sharon L. Hoss, 62, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2006, at the Ellsworth County Medical Center. Mrs. Hoss was born April 10, 1944, at Eureka to Robert and Illa Marie Shaw Monfort. She lived most of her life in Ellsworth and Kanopolis, where she was a homemaker and daycare provider. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Kanopolis. She married Clarence Hill Dec. 22, 1962, at Wilson. He died in 1983. She married Melvin Hoss Oct. 12, 1984, at Ellsworth. He survives. Other survivors include a son, Brian Hill of Wilson; a daughter, Rose Miller of St. Francis; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. The funeral was Saturday at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth, Pastor Stephen Holmes officiating. Burial was in Buckeye Cemetery, rural Kanopolis. Deb Quintanar (1958-2006)
Deb Quintanar, 48, Ellsworth, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2006, at the Kaye Pogue Hospice Center, Salina. Mrs. Quintanar was born Jan. 26, 1958, at Junction City to Daryl and Irene Adam Graham. She moved to Salina three years ago from Ellsworth, where she was a homemaker and a member of the Assembly of God Church. She married David Quintanar May 10, 1987, at Hutchinson. He survives. Other survivors include three sons, Dustin Taylor of Junction City and Travis Taylor and Christopher Quintanar, both of Manhattan; a daughter, Chelsey Quintanar of Salina; her mother, Irene Graham of Salina; a sister, Kathy Martin of St. Peters, Mo.; and a brother, Dennis Graham of Salina. Ramona Elizabeth Gates Lumpkins, a resident of Liberty, Texas, and a former resident of Holyrood, died Dec. 18, 2006, after a brave battle with cancer. She was born Dec. 10, 1934, to Angie Maley and Everett Sylvester Gates. She married Delwin E. Lumpkins May 3, 1951. Survivors include: six children, Leanna Davis and husband, Ed, Nacogdoches, Texas, Delwin Eugene Lumpkins and wife, Jill, Hutchinson, Ronald Lumpkins, Russell, Dwight Lumpkins and wife, Nancy, Liberty, Loren Lumpkins, Liberty, and Lonnie Lumpkins and wife, Mandy, Longview, Texas; a sister, Maxine Brown, Phillipsburg; a brother, Lester Gates and wife, Melba, Goodland; special in-laws, Earl Lumpkins and wife, Juanita, Palco, Keith Lumpkins and wife, Grade, Chase, Virginia King and husband, Daryl, Parker, Colo., Lorna Kay Lumpkins, Hays, and Goldie Gates, Chase; 19 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. CHATFIELD, Minn. — Floyd R. Ballinger, 41, Chatfield, Minn., died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006. Mr. Ballinger was was born Jan. 23, 1965, at Rockyford, Colo., to John and Martha Tompkins Ballinger. He lived most of his life in Kansas, moving to Minnesota this past year. He married Patty Shaw, who lives in Wilson, Kan. Other survivors include a son, Garrett Ballinger of Chatfield; a daughter, Amanda Ballinger of Chatfield; his father, John Ballinger of Paradise, Kan.; his mother, Martha Weeks of LaCrosse, Kan.; and three sisters, Debra Dolechek of Wilson, and Debby Poppelreiter of Ellinwood, Kan., and Donna Barta of Ellsworth, Kan. LOVELAND, COLO. — Annabelle Nicole Base, infant daughter of Jon and Nicole Base, died Friday, Nov. 17, 2006, at the McKee Medical Center, Loveland. Survivors include a brother, Maddox of Fort Collins, Colo.; the maternal grandparents, Jim and Barb Funk of WaKeeney, Kan.; the paternal grandparents, Don and Janese Base of Ellsworth, Kan.; the maternal great-grandmother, Enna Mae Williams of Overland Park, Kan.; and the paternal great-grandfather, Don Giebler of Hays, Kan. Bertha S.D. Bricker (1912-2006)
LUCAS — Bertha S.D. Bricker, 94, Lucas, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006. Mrs. Bricker was born Bertha Bahls April 23, 1912, at Lincoln. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Robert S. Bricker, died in 1968. Survivors include two sons, William R. Bricker of Ellsworth and David R. Virginia Ruth Herzog Carver (1936-2006)
GOLDEN, COLO. — Virginia Ruth Herzog Carver, 70, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006. Mrs. Carver was born Aug. 23, 1936, at Oberlin, Kan., to Robert W. and Mabel Paulson Herzog. She was a 1954 graduate of Ellsworth, Kan., High School and a 1959 graduate of Kansas State University. She taught for 29 years, including at the Texas School of the Deaf and Callier Center for Communication Disorders in Dallas and in the Department of Communication Disorders at Southern Methodist University. She was active in the Alpha Xi Delta Alumni Association, Denver, the Denver Area Panhellenic, the First Methodist Church of Golden and as a volunteer at a Golden elementary school. Survivors include her husband, Ivil “Bud” Carver; a sister, Barbara Coupe; and three step-children, Jane Trexler, Chris Johnson and Lisa Jankowski. There was a memorial service Dec. 2 at Golden. Vernon E. Janssen (1921-2006)
LITTLE RIVER — Vernon E. Janssen, 85, Little River, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice at St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. Mr. Janssen was born Jan. 4, 1921, at Lorraine to Herman G. and Christina Steenbock Janssen. He was a 1939 graduate of Lorraine High School and a 1948 graduate of Kansas State University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and later served five years in the Air Force Reserves. He was a long-time resident of Little River, where he was a farmer and veterans farm training instructor at the high school from 1948-1954. He also was the county supervisor from 1955 to 1983 for Farmers Home Administration. He was a member of the Little River United Methodist Church, United Methodist Men, Gideons International, American Legion Post 258 and Lions Club. He married Ione C. Farver July 23, 1950. She died in 2001. He also was preceded in death by two sisters, Melva Splitter and Wanda Olson. Survivors include two sons, Royce of Inman and David Janssen of Wichita; a daughter, Cynthia Dukes of Naples, Fla.; two brothers, Arlen Janssen of Geneseo and Jerome Janssen of Ellsworth; and three grandchildren. The funeral was Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Pastor Wayne Johnson officiating. Burial was in Bean Cemetery, Little River, with military honors by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.
