Wayne Eugene Wells

Wayne Eugene Wells, 52, a lifelong resident of the McCune area, died at 12:16 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, in the emergency room at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center. His death was unexpected.

He was born Nov. 30, 1949, at Parsons, to W.E. "Gene" and Thelma J. (Brown) Wells. He grew up and attended schools in the McCune area and graduated from McCune Rural High School in 1968.

For many years, he was employed at the Broadway Lumber Company in Pittsburg until retiring in 1998 due to his health.

Mr. Wells was a small aircraft pilot and was interested in military aircraft.

Survivors include two brothers, Roger W. Wells of Americus and David L. Wells of McCune; two sisters, Lorraine M. Basye of Oronogo, Mo., and Laverne L. Cook of Baxter Springs; and several nieces and nephews and a great-niece and a great-nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home at Parsons with Lynn Ragsdale officiating. Burial will be in the McCune Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Arrangements are under the direction of the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home of Parsons.

Doris E. Burris

GALENA -- Doris E. Burris, 81, of Galena, died at 8:32 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at her home following an illness.

She was born Jan. 19, 1920, at Aldridge, Mo., to James and Nellie (Moore) Carter.

She moved with her family to Baxter Springs at the age of 2. She had lived in Galena since 1940.

Mrs. Burris married Walter Edward Burris on Jan. 5, 1940, at Columbus. He preceded her in death Sept. 26, 1974.

Mrs. Burris was a housewife. She was a member of the First Christian Church at Galena.

She is survived by two sons, Ralph Burris of Lorton, Va.; and C. Ed Burris of Galena; two daughters, Clara Hargis and Jennie Sanders, both of Galena; one sister, Ruth Hensley of Baxter Springs; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Oak Hill Cemetery in Galena. Gene Wilson will officiate. The casket will remain closed. The family will be at the home of daughter Clara Hargis, 817 Euclid St. in Galena. Arrangements are under the direction of the Derfelt Funeral Home of Galena

Daisy Deane 'D.D.' Lemmond

PARSONS -- Daisy Deane "D.D." Lemmond, 83, of Parsons and a longtime Labette County resident, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at her home.

She was born June 16, 1918, at Chetopa to Francis Daniel and Ruth Idell (Beahm) Ditzler. She grew up in Chetopa, graduating from Chetopa High School in 1936.

She married James Ray Morgan of Columbus in 1939. He preceded her in death.

She married Edwin W. (Ed) Lemmond on Dec. 24, 1965, at Chetopa. He died Nov. 29, 1991.

On March 18, 1994, she married Wesley E. Gilleland in Parsons. He died April 30, 1996.

Mrs. Lemmond was employed at the Tri-City Gas Company for 20 years in Chetopa before moving to Parsons in 1965. In 1965, she began working as a secretary to the director of the Parsons Chamber of Commerce and she served in that capacity for 10 years.

In 1977, she began employment with the U.S. Senate as Sen. Bob Dole's southeast Kansas representative, with offices on the Parsons Plaza. She served in that position for 13 years. After retiring in 1990, she worked part-time at Stephens' Women's Wear at Parsons.

Mrs. Lemmond was a member of the First United Methodist Church at Chetopa for more than 40 years. She served on the worship service board and was active in the church choir. After moving to Parsons, she joined the First Presbyterian Church.

She was a life member of Excelsior Chapter No. 86, Order of the Eastern Star in Chetopa and had served as the chapter organist for eight years. She was president of the Chetopa Junior Home Culture Club in 1956 and 1966. She was also active in Republican politics for many years and was a member of the Labette County Republican Women's Club and the Kansas Federation of Republican Women.

Mrs. Lemmond was a member of the Lady Elks of the Parsons Elks Lodge No. 527 and was a member of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Coffey Chapter of Coffeyville.

For 13 years, she was a member of the Parsons Arts and Crafts Fair Board and was its treasurer for 10 years. She also served on the board of the Parsons United Way. She was also a member of the United States Senate Staff Club and of U.S. Sen. Bob Dole's Alumni Organization in Washington, D.C.

Survivors include one son, Dan. R. Morgan of Liberia, Costa Rica, two grandsons and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church at Parsons, with the Rev. Michael Sydnor officiating. Burial will be in the Oakhill Cemetery at Chetopa with Eastern Star rites given by the Pursel Chapter No. 110 of Columbus. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home at Parsons.

Leslie Dickason
RIVERSIDE, Mo. - Leslie Dickason, 91, formerly of Parsons and Pittsburg, died at 9:12 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at Alpine North Care Facility at Riverside, Mo. He had been in failing health for several years.
He was born May 8, 1911, on a farm near Blackwell, Okla., to Clyde and Elizabeth Wood Dickason. He was a graduate of Blackwell High School. He served in the U.S. Navy as a motor mechanic during World War II. He helped build bases in New Zealand and Australia while serving in the Pacific Theatre.

He married Hazel Hartman on Dec. 18, 1944, at Wichita. The couple lived in Wichita before moving to Parsons in 1960, then to Pittsburg in 1982. Mrs. Dickason preceded him in death Sept. 17, 1984.

Mr. Dickason farmed and worked in oil fields in the Blackwell area. He was a pipefitter and was employed at Kansas Army Ammunition Plant at Parsons until his retirement.

He moved to Humboldt in 1986, to Pittsburg in 1997 and eventually to the Kansas City area.

He was a member of Westside Christian Church at Parsons and the Pipefitters Union.

Survivors include one daughter, Anita Sue Hamilton of Pittsburg; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Norman Dickason on July 11, 1969; two brothers, Ivan Dickason and Leonard Dickason; and one sister, Iola Young.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home at Parsons with Todd Luce officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery at Parsons, where military honors will be presented by the Brown-Bishop Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 704. Friends may call at the funeral home at their convenience.

John Quimby Strawn
DALLAS - John Quimby Strawn, 70, of Dallas, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003.
He was born March 6, 1932, at Lawrence, to Robertson and Dorothy Martin Strawn. He attended Pittsburg schools. He received a degree in economics from the University of Kansas. He served in the U.S. Navy.

He married Mary Elizabeth Jenkins in 1957 at Pittsburg. She preceded him in death.

Mr. Strawn began his business career as a merchandise coordinator at J.C. Penney in the Kansas City, Mo., area. He worked as a buyer for J.C. Penney and Montgomery Ward at Dallas. He owned and operated The Dressing Room, a women's clothing store.

He founded the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce Soccer Association in 1968.

Survivors include two sons, David Strawn of Plano, Texas, and Michael Strawn of Charlotte, N.C.; one daughter, Susan Richmond; one brother, Bob Strawn of Strongsville, Ohio; two sisters, Mary E. Smith of Pittsburg and Elizabeth Erickson of Stockton, Mo.; and three grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Richard Scott, and a sister, Susanne Strawn.

Services were Monday, Jan. 6, at Wildwood Chapel Restland Funeral Home at Dallas.

Raymond Mocnik
Raymond Mocnik, 77, of Pittsburg, died at 7:12 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at Medicalodge North Nursing Home. Arrangements are pending and will be announced by Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 522 S. Broadway.

Maxine Joy Love
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Maxine Joy Love, 86, of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Pittsburg, died at 12:25 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at Kingswood Health Center at Kansas City, following a lengthy illness.
Arrangements are pending and will be announced by Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. Fourth St.

Phillip Ian Bass
COLUMBUS - Phillip Ian Bass, infant son of Phillip and Cynthia Bass of Columbus, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at Freeman West Hospital at Joplin, Mo.
He was born Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at Joplin.

He was a baptized Christian.

Survivors include his parents; three brothers, Mason Bass, Cordell Bass and Avery Bass, all of the home; his paternal grandparents, Mason and Lottie Bass of Columbus; his maternal grandparents, Bob and Roxie Stone of Columbus; his paternal great-grandmother, Anna Bass of Walnut; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal great-grandfather and his maternal great-grandparents.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at McKee Cemetery, northwest of Hallowell. Arrangements are under the direction of Simpson Funeral Home, Columbus.

Jacqueline S. Pope

WALNUT- Jacqueline S. Pope, 55, of Walnut, died at 11:25 p.m., Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at her residence in Walnut. She had been in failing health for one year.

She was born Sept. 8, 1948, at Mayfield, Ky., to Henry M. and Betty E. Piper.

She grew up and attended schools in Farmington, Ky., and graduated from Farmington High School in 1966. She worked in purchasing at Shawnee Mission Hospital in Shawnee. In 1975, she received an associate arts degree in accounting from Canal Zone College in Panama, where the family lived for four years. She worked at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant in Parsons during the 1970s and 1980s. She received an ADN degree in nursing from Labette Community College in Parsons in 1996. She later worked at Hospital District No. 1 of Crawford County at Girard, Heritage Nursing Home at Girard, and Prairie Mission Retirement Village in St. Paul.

She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church at Girard and a former member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church at Walnut, the Daughters of Isabella, and Gard Lee Post No. 292 American Legion Auxiliary of Walnut..

She married Stephen R. Pope on April 18, 1970, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Shawnee. He survives of the home.

Survivors also include three sons, Chuck Pope of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Michael Pope of the home and Adam Pope of the home; one daughter, Roxanne Bennett of Girard; three grandchildren; her mother of Farmington,; two brothers, Tony Piper of Farmington and Bob Piper of Farmington; and two sisters, Deanie Hall of Mayfield and Marianne Piper of Mayfield.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Mass of Christian burial for will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Girard with Fr. Donald R. Thissen as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Aloysius Cemetery at Greenbush. The rosary will be at 7: p.m. today at Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard where the family will receive friends following the Rosary. Friends may call after 9 a.m. today at Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home at Girard. Arrangements are under the direction of Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home.

Bessie L. Sizemore

Bessie L. Sizemore, 90, of Cherokee, died at 11:58 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Cornerstone Village Care Center in Pittsburg.

She was born Sept. 22, 1913, at West Mineral, to Charlie and Jennie (Bates) Parsons.

She attended school in West Mineral, graduating from West Mineral High School with the class of 1931. She went on to graduate from Kansas State Teachers College, now Pittsburg State University. She taught school in West Mineral, McCune, Pittsburg and Cherokee.

In 1948, she married Frank Sizemore in Arkansas. He preceded her death in 1978.

They lived in Springdale, Ark., and while there helped develop Beaver Lake. They later moved to Girard and then to Cherokee.

Mrs. Sizemore was a member of the Trinity Holiness Church in Monmouth.

Survivors include her sisters Thelma Barnes of Pittsburg, and Betty Hays of Prairie Village, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Berniece Smith and Mamie Justice and brothers Frank and Jack Parsons.

Inurnment will be at a later date in Cherokee City Cemetery in Cherokee. Arrangements are under the direction of Bath-Naylor Funeral Home.

Irma Bull

OSWEGO -- Irma Bull, 79, of Oswego, died at 8:40 a.m., Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, at St. John's Regional Medical Center of Joplin, Mo., after a brief illness.

She was born Jan. 25, 1919, at Ross Township, to Alva and Ester Burgan Barnes. She grew up and attended schools in Cherokee County.

She married Edgar Bull. They later divorced.

She worked as a census taker in 1960. She also worked at Berry Manufacturing at both Columbus and Oswego. She retired in 1981. She then worked as a dispatcher for the Care Ambulance Service at Oswego from 1981 to 1986.

Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Buckley, of Chetopa; a brother, Howard L. Barnes, of Parsons; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, William L. Barnes.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Murdock Funeral Home, 203 Illinois, Oswego, with the Rev. Raymond Whetstone officiating. Burial will follow in the Edgmand Cemetery, northeast of Columbus. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Murdock Funeral Home, Oswego.

Eric G. Schroeder

Eric G. Schroeder, 30, of 113 E. Kansas, died at 6:12 a.m., Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, in the ICU at Mt. Carmel Medical Center after a brief illness.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 522 S. Broadway, Pittsburg.

Gordon E. Stotts

PARSONS -- Gordon E. Stotts, 77, of Parsons, died at 8:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at St. John's Regional Medical Center of Joplin, Mo. He had been in ill health for two months.

He was born March 30, 1921, at McCune, to Oscar and Pearl Nelson Stotts. He grew up in the rural McCune area.

He married Mary K. Hammel on July 4, 1942, at McCune. She preceded him in death March 20, 1995. The couple lived for several years in California, and then spent several years in Nebraska. They moved to Erie in 1960 and to Parsons in 1963.

He was employed by Ruskin Manufacturing Co. in Parsons. He was a member of the Westside Christian Church of Parsons.

He is survived by two sons, Dean Stotts, of Parsons, and Jerry Stotts, of Chetopa; a brother, Raymond Stotts, of Pittsburg; and five grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by a son, Jesse L. Stotts, and a sister, Mary Alice Morrow.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 112 N. 26th St., Parsons, with Charles Beard officiating. Burial will follow in the East Bethany Cemetery. Friends may call after 9 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Arrangements are under the direction of the Carson-Wall Funeral Home.

Harriet Julia Shelton Allison

Harriett Julia Shelton Allison, 87, of 1901 N. Smelter, died at 5:45 a.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at her home, following a lengthy illness.

She was born Aug. 23, 1912, at Caney, to Silas Edward and Sarah Jane Roth Shelton. She attended school at Caney and graduated from Northeastern State University, at Tahlequah, Okla. She later graduated from Pittsburg State University.

She married Howard Kenneth Allison on Feb. 14, 1942, at Caney. He preceded her in death on Oct. 26, 1994.

She taught school in a one-room country school house in Oklahoma. She also taught in Kansas schools and retired from the Pittsburg school system.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Janice Allison-Mayer-Brown, of Pittsburg; and three grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a son, Howard Kenneth Allison II in 1978; three brothers, Earl, Everett, and Harry Shelton; and a sister, Beatrice Shelton.

Private family graveside services will be Tuesday at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, north of Pittsburg, with the Rev. Walter Simpson officiating. Burial will follow the services. Friends may call at the home of her daughter, Janice, at 1901 N. Smelter.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 522 S. Broadway.
