Albert G. Gruenthal
Albert G. Gruenthal, 92, Salina, died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005.
Mr. Gruenthal was born Jan. 7, 1913, near Glasco, the son of George F. Gruenthal and the former Martha M. Henning. He was a Star Route mail contractor for the U.S. Postal Service for 35 years. He was a past vice president of the National Star Route Mail Carriers Association and was a founding member, with his wife Marie, of the St. Mary Queen of the Universe Catholic Church in Salina.
He married Margaret Marie Butler on April 1, 1940. She preceded him in death in 2004.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Mullen and husband Don of Salina and Linda Gruenthal of Denver; a brother, Arlo Gruenthal of Salina; and a granddaughter, Christina Mullen of Salina.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Ninth and Iron, Salina. A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Glasco Cemetery.
A vigil and rosary service will be at 6:30 p.m. today at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401.
Memorials may be made to the St. Mary Queen of the Universe Catholic Church Endowment Fund.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the mortuary.

WICHITA — Vit “Pete” Janda, 83, Wichita, died Monday, Aug. 22, 2005.
Mr. Janda was born Dec. 29, 1921, in Ellsworth County. He was a retired welder for Boeing of Wichita.
Survivors include his wife, Rosada of Wichita; three sons, Pat of Kansas City, Mo., Jack of Wichita and Steve of Erie, Colo.; a daughter, Marty McFarland of Arusha Tanzania, East Africa; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery.
A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Friday at Foster Mortuary Chapel, 610 24th, Wilson 67490.

ELLSWORTH — Rudolph L. Neuman, 84, Ellsworth, died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005.
Mr. Neuman was born Sept. 19, 1920, in Ellsworth County. He was a retired county clerk and a farmer and stockman.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty, in 2000; and a son, Larry Dean, in 1958.
Survivors include his wife, Elena of Ellsworth; a son, Paul of Ellsworth; two grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Parsons Funeral Home, 307 N. Lincoln, Ellsworth 67439. Burial will be in Ellsworth Cemetery with military graveside rites.

PALCO — Ronald Kent Palmberg, 53, Palco, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2005.
Mr. Palmberg was born Aug. 1, 1952, in Hays. He was a self-employed handyman.
Survivors include a son, Damian of Hays; his mother, Winifred Palmberg of Palco; four brothers, John of Pflugerville, Texas, Gail of Hays, Randy of Newkirk, Okla., and Richard of Plainville; two sisters, Elaine Graybill of Alva, Okla., and Phyllis Dreiling of Ellis; his grandmother, Leola Sutor of Plainville; and a grandson.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Palco United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, near Palco.

BELLEVUE, Wash. — Dorothy Martha Peterson, 94, Bellevue, formerly of Russell, Kan., died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2005.
Mrs. Peterson was born Dorothy Martha Nestler on Dec. 31, 1910, in Atchison, Kan. She worked in the family bakery.
Her husband, Gordon, died in 1963.
Survivors include nieces and nephews, including Richard Nestler of Bellevue.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Pohlman-Heise Memorial Chapel, 610 N. Maple, Russell 67665. Burial will be in Russell City Cemetery.

Dorene Phye, 94, Salina, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2005.
Mrs. Phye was born Dorene Schnelle on June 3, 1911, in Sharon. She was a homemaker and taught for 13 years for Barber County grade schools.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charley A. Phye, in 1982.
Survivors include a son, Fred Phye and wife Anita of Salina; a daughter, Linda Kastle and husband Mike of LeRoy; a sister, Florence Cox of Medicine Lodge; four grandchildren, Kristy Griffin of Lynd, Minn., Scott Phye of Salina, Candy Domann of Hays and Holly McKenzie of Parsons; and two great-grandchildren, Sydney and Mallory Griffin of Lynd.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, Medicine Lodge. Inurnment will be in Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge.

MOUNDRIDGE — Esther V. Schmidt, 88, Moundridge, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2005.
Mrs. Schmidt was born Esther V. Becker on July 24, 1917, at rural Galva. She was a cook at Asbury Hospital in Salina.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; and two daughters, Donna Roll and Karen Lane.
Survivors include two sons, Warren of Salina and Kenneth of Topeka; a daughter, Linda Judd of Baldwin City; three brothers, Alan Becker of Wichita, Herbert Becker of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Melvin Becker of Moundridge; a sister, Darlene Lundberg of McPherson; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Gospel Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, Moundridge. Burial will be in Lone Tree Church Cemetery, Galva.

PALCO — Roger Williams, 58, Palco, died Monday, Aug. 22, 2005.
Mr. Williams was born Jan. 31, 1947. He was a heavy equipment operator for Hereford County, Texas.
Survivors include a son, James of Amarillo, Texas; three daughters, Janet Jung and Joanna Williams, both of Hereford, Texas, and Kristina Williams of LaCrosse; four brothers, Rick of Goodland, Roy of Plainville, Ray of Liebenthal and Art of Loveland, Colo.; two sisters, Ruth Winters of Norton and Rita Brendal of Savannah, Ga.; and eight grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Redline Church of God, Palco. Burial will be in Stockton Cemetery.

James Gene “Jim” Betts
James Gene “Jim” Betts, 76, Salina, died Friday, Aug. 26, 2005.
Mr. Betts was born April 13, 1929, in Salina, the son of the late Philip Frank Betts and Mabel Zada (Laferre) Green. He attended Washington High School in Salina. He served in the U.S. Navy as a seaman second class in World War II and served in the U.S. Army as a corporal in the Korean War. He retired as owner/operator of ACE Sanitary Service in Salina and had been working as a rural postal carrier. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1432 and attended the Emmanuel Christian Center in Salina. He was an avid stamp collector.
He married the former Shirley Ann Copeland on Aug. 2, 1957, in Ellsworth.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley; three daughters, Shayla Gibbs and husband Curtis, Geneann Gordon and husband Greg T. and Dawn Carlson and husband Frank, all of Salina; two sons, Monty and wife Linda of Salina and Kevin of Wichita; a sister, Phyllis Austin and husband Ralph of Mauston, Wis.; a brother, Donald Philip and wife Etta of Salina; two half brothers, Michael Betts of Salina and Terence “Terry” Betts and wife Josephine of Tracy, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Emmanuel Christian Center, Salina, Pastor Loren Houltberg officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, New Cambria.

Mrs. Macfee was born Elsie Theresia Thiringer on Nov. 10, 1915, in Herndon. She was the deputy county clerk for Rawlins County for 28 years.
Her husband, Clark, died in 2002.
Survivors include a daughter, Marlene Friesendahl of Topeka; a sister, Hilda Morthole of Culbertson, Neb.; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Brantley Funeral Home, 215 S. Fourth, Atwood 67730. Private burial will be in Atwood Fairview Cemetery.
