Olive F. Cook

WALNUT -- Olive F. Cook, 76, of Walnut, died at 9:22 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Hospital District No. 1 of Crawford County.

She was born Nov. 26, 1924, at Muncie, Ind., to James R. and Elsie Ronecker May. She attended high school at Midway, Ky.

She lived in Cincinnati from 1943 until 1950, and in Kansas City, Mo. , from 1950 until 1986. While in Kansas City, she worked at Ace Electric, until the company relocated to Columbus.

She was married to George E. Wulf from the 1966 until 1982. She married Robert N. Cook on Jan. 2, 1985, at Miami, Okla. He survives of the home.

Mrs. Cook was a member of the Friends Church of Stark.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Cook is survived by a son, Joe Stephen Wohlgmuth of Moberly, Mo.; two sisters, Cora Ramp of Cincinnati and Violet Reist of Niles, Mich.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a son, a daughter, a brother and four sisters.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Friends Church of Stark, with the Rev. Roman Ward officiating. Burial will be at the Glenwood Cemetery at Walnut. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 p.m. today at the Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home of Erie, where friends may call after 4 p.m. today. Arrangements are under the direction of the Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home of Erie.

Clara Z. Janssen

PARSONS -- Clara Z. Janssen, 100, died at 5:45 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at the Elmhaven East Nursing Home at Parsons.

She was born Feb. 21, 1900, near Odense, to Charley E. and Margaret C. Jenkinson DeHart. She grew up in the Erie area.

She married LeRoy C. Janssen on Nov. 10, 1917, at Erie. They lived in the Erie and St. Paul areas before moving to a farm near Lake Parsons in 1939. Mr. Janssen preceded her in death April 16, 1978.

Mrs. Janssen moved to Parsons in 1987.

Survivors include three sons, Bing Janssen and Cecil Janssen, both of Parsons, and Merritt Janssen of Cherryvale; three daughters, Ina Bell Pontious of Parsons, Viola Kramer of Arkansas City, and Trudy Chastain of Wichita; 23 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 39 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Paul Janssen; a daughter, Nellie Pontious; two great-grandaughters; two brothers; and three sisters.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Erie Federated Church, with the Rev. Tim McCrary and Rev. Ralph Jarboe officiating. Burial will be at the East Hill Cemetery at Erie. The family will receive friends at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home at Parsons from 2 until 4 p.m. Sunday. Arrangements are under the direction of the Carson-Wall Funeral Home of Parsons.

Osola M. Prideaux
GIRARD - Osola M. Prideaux, 96, of Girard, died at 8:58 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Heritage Nursing Home at Girard. She had been in failing health several years.
She was born Aug. 22, 1906, at Garland, to Ernest M. and Millie Pearl (Thackeray) Trout.

She lived at Garland, Mulberry and Cherokee before moving to Girard 65 years ago.

On Feb. 17, 1926, she married Floyd E. Prideaux at Girard. He preceded her in death July 19, 1972.

She was a member of First Christian Church of Girard, where she was a deaconess, a member of the Loyal Bereans Class and had taught the Junior Sunday School Class for a number of years. She was a pink lady at Hospital District No. 1 of Crawford County, Girard, serving more than 1,000 hours as a volunteer.

She had been employed at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant at Parsons, drove a bread truck for Zettle's Bakery and worked at the Appeal to Reason. She also worked with her husband in wallpapering and painting.

Survivors include one son, Floyd M. "Bud" Prideaux, Girard; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one brother, Erford M. Trout, and four sisters, Georgie Bedene, Cecile Peak, Ruth Longan and Eva Treat.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, Girard, with the Rev. Darrell Biggs officiating. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery. Friends may call at Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home at their convenience and also at the home of their son, Bud Prideaux, 301 E. Magnolia, Girard.

Marie L. Krog
GIRARD - Marie L. Krog, 83, of Girard, died at 3:15 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at her home, following a lengthy period of failing health.
She was born May 16, 1919, at Girard, to Ernest A. and Mary (Reidinger) Krog.

She graduated from Girard High School in 1936.

In 1955, she began employment as a bookkeeper for the First National Bank of Girard, and, in 1961, was promoted to assistant cashier. In 1979, she became a vice president of the bank and, in 1984, celebrated 25 years of association with the bank.

Survivors include three sisters, Ruby Krog, of the home, Lena Thompson, of Springfield, Mo., and Alice Nelson, of Girard; two nephews and three nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, an infant, J.E. Krog, and Raymond Krog.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, Girard. Burial will be in Girard Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday.

Mayme A. 'Sunny' Crockett
Mayme A. "Sunny" Crockett, 89, of Pittsburg, and a former Parsons resident, died at 10:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at her home following a lengthy illness.
She was born Jan. 5, 1914, at Buffalo, to Asa B. and Arminta (Friley) Smith.

She grew up at Salix, Iowa, and graduated from Salix High School in 1932. She moved back to Kansas with her family in 1933. She also lived for a time in Chicago and San Francisco.

On Sept. 28, 1938, she married Robert C. Crockett at Nowata, Okla. He preceded her in death Dec. 26, 1968.

She became a member of the Methodist Church during her childhood. She was employed by Kansas Mobile Home, Parsons, for 14 years, retiring in 1985.

Survivors include one daughter, Rea Rae Donna Rhodes, Pittsburg; one brother, Merle Smith, of Carthage, Mo., and several nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, Parsons, with the Rev. Ron Keith officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence J. Clausen
GIRARD - Lawrence J. Clausen, 93, farmer and stockman of rural Girard, died at 3:25 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at his home. He had been in failing health two years.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, Girard, with the Rev. Darrell Biggs officiating. Burial will be in Girard Cemetery. Masonic rites will be given at the funeral home at 7 p.m. Tuesday by the Girard Lodge No. 93 A.F. & A.M.

The family will receive friends following the Masonic service. Additional information will be provided by Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, Girard.

Mary L. Wendt

GALENA -- Mary L. Wendt, 61, of Galena, died at 5:20 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, Mo., following a short illness.

She was born June 4, 1940, at Galena, to John and Verda (Johnson) Huffman. She was a lifetime resident of Galena.

On June 6, 1961, she married Marvin Wendt at Miami, Okla. He survives.

Mrs. Wendt was a registered dietitian. She worked as a cook for the Galena school system for many years. She later cooked at several area nursing homes. She was most recently employed at Celltron, Galena.

Additional survivors include two sons, Michael Wendt of Seneca, Mo., and Russell Wendt of Galena; two daughters, LaDonna Thompson and Dina Delaney, both of Galena; seven brothers, Larry Huffman, Frank "Duke" Huffman, Dennis Huffman, Gary Huffman, Richard Huffman, all of Galena, John Arthur Huffman of Arizona and Melvin Huffman of Weir; a sister, Natha Ellefson of Galena; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, with the Rev. Jeff Martin officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Derfelt Funeral Home, which is handling all arrangements.

Mary Mae Westervelt

CHEROKEE -- Mary Mae Westervelt, 90, of rural Cherokee, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at her home.

She was born Feb. 28, 1911, at rural McCune, to Urie and Betty Gillespie Barnes. She was a lifetime resident of Crawford County.

On Feb. 23, 1936, she married Dale Westervelt at Oswego. He preceded her in death Aug. 4, 1990.

Mrs. Westervelt was a homemaker.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Oswego.

Survivors include a son, Keith Westervelt of Cherokee; a daughter, Glenda Ward of Jefferson City, Mo.; a sister, Mattie Hevel of Seattle; a brother, Don Barnes of Pittsburg; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Ray and Raymond Westervelt; six brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Weir, with the Rev. James Shope officiating. Burial will follow in Park Cemetery, Columbus. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where friends may call after 9 a.m. Sunday. Services and arrangements are under the direction of Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Weir.

Jim H. Sweet

BAXTER SPRINGS -- Jim H. Sweet, 80, of Baxter Springs, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., following a lengthy illness.

He was born May 15, 1921, at Galena, to Jim and Dora Sweet. He was a lifelong resident of southeast Kansas.

Mr. Sweet was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps from March 20, 1942, until his discharge at Fort MacArthur, Calif., Dec. 8, 1945. He retired in 1986 after 20 years as a security guard for the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant, Parsons.

On Dec. 25, 1946, he married Peggy Swain Williams at Columbus. She preceded him in death July 4, 1984.

Survivors include a stepdaughter, Susie Derryberry of Baxter Springs; two sisters, Mildred Lewis of Carl Junction, Mo., and Barbara Chambers of Oklahoma City; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a stepson, Kenneth Williams; a brother, Ted Sweet; and two sisters, Ida Evans and Billie Morris.

Memorial services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, with Roy Derfelt officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home.

Carol D. Stone

PARSONS -- Carol D. Stone, 48, of Parsons, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, after a short illness.

She was born Feb. 16, 1953, at Pittsburg, to Ray A. and Margaret L. Williams Stone. She grew up at Mindenmines, Mo. She was a resident of Parsons State Hospital and Training Center's Pine Cottage for three years.

Ms. Stone was a member of the First Christian Church of Mindenmines.

Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Missy and Tony Malnar of Arma, who helped provide for her care, and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Monday at the Liberal City Cemetery, with the Rev. Ted Wynn officiating. The family will receive friends at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 522 S. Broadway, Pittsburg, from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday. The procession will leave for the cemetery at 2:15 p.m. Monday. Services are under the direction of Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Pittsburg.

Barbara E. Pryor

COLUMBUS -- Barbara E. Pryor, 53, of Columbus, died at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at her home, after a long illness.

She was born April 28, 1948, at Chicago, to Lovic G. and Rilla E. (Lamar) Goodwin.

On May 16, 1969, she married Tom Pryor at Las Vegas, Nev. He survives at the home.

In 1988, she graduated from Pittsburg State University with bachelor's degrees in English and psychology. She received a master's degree in English from PSU in 1992.

Mrs. Pryor was an assistant librarian at the Joplin Public Library for two years. She taught English at PSU from 1998-99. She was a reporter at The Columbus Daily Advocate from 1992-98.

She was a member of the Pittsburg Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Survivors include six children, Jennifer Viles of Webb City, Mo., Jeremy Pryor of Atchison, Brenda, David and Ben Pryor, all of Lawrence, and Jon Pryor of the home; two grandchildren; and a brother, Charles Goodwin of Ridgecrest, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Columbus, with Bishop Matthew Montague officiating. Burial will follow in Park Cemetery, Columbus. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where friends may call after 3 p.m. Sunday. Arrangements are under the direction of Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Columbus.

Velma 'Arlene' Yates

ARCADIA - Velma "Arlene" Yates, 79, of Arcadia, died at 6:25 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center in Pittsburg.

She was born June 13, 1924, at Arcadia to Frederick and Mary Ethel Nasworthy Totman.

She was raised and attended schools in Arcadia. She was a homemaker and lived in Arcadia most of her life. She also worked for Peerless Products in Fort Scott.

She married James D. "Spotty" Yates on Aug. 16, 1946, at Fort Scott. He survives at Guest Home Estate in Pittsburg.

Additional survivors include one daughter, Terry Bright of Arcadia; four sons, Fred Dixon and Danny Yates, both of Mulberry, Richard Dixon of Pittsburg, and James Yates of Arma; one sister, Thadean Houtz of Springfield, Mo.; one brother, Delroy Totman of Chanute; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Totman and Joe Totman; and three sisters, Addie Swafford, Chloe Davis, and Nina Golledge.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bedene Funeral Home in Arma with the Rev. Bill Banks officiating. Burial will be at Sheffield Cemetery near Arcadia. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Bedene Chapel, where friends may call after 11 a.m. Tuesday. Arrangements are under the direction of Bedene Funeral Home.

Joel K. Parkerson

Joel K. Parkerson, 74, of Pittsburg, died at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center in Pittsburg.

Arrangements are pending and will be announced by Bath-Naylor Funeral Home of Pittsburg.

Melvin K. Brumfield

Melvin K. Brumfield, 79, of Pittsburg, formerly of Kansas City, Kan., died at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center in Pittsburg.

He was born Jan. 19, 1924, at Kansas City, Kan., to John Franklin and Bessie Bell (Herren) Brumfield.

He attended Kansas City, Kan., schools, graduating from Wyandotte High School. He served more than 20 years in the U.S. Navy as a chief X-ray technician. After his retirement, he returned to Kansas City. He worked for the Kansas City Police Department as a special forces officer, for Yellow Cab as a dispatcher, and as a truck driver. He moved to Pittsburg in 1991.

He married Betty Lee Yeager on Nov. 11, 1965. She preceded him in death on May 22, 1998.

Survivors include two stepdaughters, Barbara Fischer of Pittsburg and Janet Wright of Pleasanton; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Wayne H. Brumfield of Las Vegas, Nev.

He also was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Crocker Cemetery southeast of Pittsburg with Fr. Robert McElwee officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Brenner Mortuary Chapel in Pittsburg, where friends may call after 2 p.m. Tuesday. Arrangements are under the direction of Brenner Mortuary.

Bill Webster Anthony

FORT SCOTT- Bill Webster Anthony, 83, of Fort Scott, died early Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at Mercy Health Center in Fort Scott.

He was born Oct. 29, 1920, at Fort Scott to Walter Lee and Bernice Leota Johnson Anthony.

He grew up in Fort Scott and graduated from Fort Scott High School in 1939. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He worked for the Anthony Frisco Market in Fort Scott before moving to Nevada, Mo., in 1964. He worked as a meat cutter for the Maxwell Food Locker in Nevada, retiring in 1986.

He then returned to Fort Scott and helped his wife at the Ernie Williamson Music House.

He was a member of Hammond United Methodist Church and Olson-Frary-Burkhart VFW Post 1165.

He married Joyce Lea Phillips on May 24, 1963, at Fort Scott. She survives of the home.

Additional survivors include a daughter, Leota Lucy Anthony of the home; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Billy Jay Anthony; one sister, Virginia Lee Benedict; and two brothers, Walter J. Anthony and James D. Anthony.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel in Fort Scott with Elder Joe Rei officiating, assisted by the Rev. Robin Reeves. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery with military honors conducted by VFW Post 1165. Arrangements are under the direction of Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel.
