Herman Henry Dohl
SYLVAN GROVE — Herman Henry Dohl, 86, Sylvan Grove, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006.
Mr. Dohl was born Oct. 24, 1919, east of Sylvan Grove, the son of Henry and Martha (Meyer) Dohl. He was a farmer and stockman. He attended Bethlehem Lutheran Grade School and graduated from Sylvan Grove High School. He was a World War II veteran and served in the European and the Pacific theaters. He was a lifelong member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, sang in the choir and served as an elder. He was a charter member of the Kansas Swine Improvement Association and served on the Farmer’s Elevator Board and the Fair Board and was a member of the American Legion. He married Arlene Blase on June 16, 1946.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Walter; two sisters, Bernita Fortune and Ruby Pontius; an infant daughter, Erica Lynn; and a son-in-law, Robert Stuckert.
Survivors include his wife, Arlene, of the home; two sons, Arthur and wife Justine and Edward and grandson Ian of Sylvan Grove; four daughters, Marjorie and husband Alfred Aufdemberge of Lincoln, Mary of Wichita, Lorelei and husband Matt Schofield and grandchildren Cedric, Sophia, Genevieve and Broderick of Berlin, Germany, and Jennifer and husband Don Olsen of Chicago; grandsons, Christopher and wife Kristi; and great-grandchildren, Braden, Kylie and Brantley of Netawaka, and Jason and wife Anne and great-grandson Valden of Sylvan Grove, and Lyle of Los Angeles; granddaughters, Chesley of Kansas City, Mo., Madelyn “Lynn” of Lenexa, Esther of Lindsborg and Megan Huehl and husband Charlie of Vesper; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Sylvan Grove, the Rev. Brian Tuma officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, Sylvan Grove.
Memorials may be made to the church or Occupational Center of Central Kansas Travel Fund.

Chester Dyer
LUCAS — Chester Dyer, 72, Lucas, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006.
Mr. Dyer was born March 3, 1933, in Lucas. He was a construction worker.
His wife, Joyce, died in 1999.
Survivors include two sons, Mike of Salina and Denny of Dorrance; two daughters, Marcia Conn and Cathy Pieschl, both of Salina; a brother, Bill of Newkirk, Okla.; two sisters, Carol Blackwell of Lucas and Mary Williamson of Manhattan; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Lucas. Burial will be in Lucas Cemetery.

Susan A. “Sue” Embrey
McPHERSON — Susan A. “Sue” Embrey, 58, McPherson, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006.
Mrs. Embrey was born Susan A. Ambrose on Aug. 18, 1947, in Missouri Valley, Iowa. She was a former legal secretary for William S. Mills Law Office.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Annette.
Survivors include her husband, Tom, of the home; a daughter, Debbie Klinkerman of McPherson; two brothers, Stan Ambrose of Dunlap, Iowa, and Don Ambrose of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and a sister, Mary Hissong of Fort Wayne, Ind.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, McPherson. Burial will be in McPherson Cemetery.

BROOKVILLE — Dora Katherine Martin, 89, Brookville, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006.
Ms. Martin was born Oct. 22, 1916, in Brookville. She was a homemaker and farmer.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Roselawn Memorial Park, 1920 E. Crawford, Salina.

Harold Lee “Herk McAlexander
HOISINGTON — Harold Lee “Herk” McAlexander, 78, Hoisington, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006.
Mr. McAlexander was born March 28, 1927, in Lycan, Colo., the son of John C. and Minnie (Fenton) McAlexander. He was a brick layer and masonry contractor. He was a World War II veteran, serving as a staff sargent in the U.S. Army. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and a life member of the VFW Post 7428, American Legion Post 286 and Bricklayer and Allied Craftsman Union, Local 2. He was a former chairman of the trustees of Vine United Methodist Church. He married Billie Luder on Aug. 18, 1945, in Paris, Texas.
Survivors include his wife, Billie, of the home; two sons, K.C. and wife Suzanne of Huntingtown, Md., and Dan and wife Celeste of Nashville, Tenn.; a brother, Charles J. of Security, Colo.; and five grandchildren, Caitrin, Noel, Ian, Anne and Alice McAlexander.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, Hoisington, the Rev. Wayne Flanders officiating. Burial will be in Hoisington Cemetery, with military graveside rites by VFW Post 7428 and American Legion Post 286.

McPHERSON — Benjamin Joseph McLean, 5, McPherson, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006.
He was born April 17, 2000, in Overland Park. He was a kindergarten student at Eisenhower Elementary School, McPherson.
Survivors include his parents, Charles “Andy” and Sheila Ann McLean, of McPherson; a brother, Jakob Dylan McLean of the home; his grandparents, Vernon and Luella Nutter of McPherson, Barbara McLean of Clarksville, Tenn., and Charles McLean of Wichita; and his great-grandparents, Lois Nutter of McPherson and James and Ruth McLean of Republic, Mo.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church, McPherson. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Canton.

Arnold J. Reiter
MANKATO — Arnold J. Reiter, 88, Mankato, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006.
Mr. Reiter was born June 15, 1917, northwest of Beloit. He was a retired farmer and mill operator for the cement plant in Superior, Neb.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline, of Mankato; three sons, Don of Elmwood, Neb., Kenny of Mankato and Roger of Jewell; a daughter, Julie Kennedy of Mankato; four sisters, Lila Englebert and Maxine Roy, both of Littleton, Colo., Sister Mary Reiter of Concordia and Joan Heidrick of Englewood, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Theresa’s Church, Mankato. Burial will be in Wallace Cemetery, Jewell.
A vigil and rosary will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the church.

Bernice Marie Small
Bernice Marie Small, 78, Salina, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006.
Mrs. Small was born Feb. 19, 1927, in Sylvan Grove to the late Arnold Carl and Irene Margaret (Blum) Blase. She attended Lutheran grade school in Sylvan Grove and graduated from Junction City High School in 1945. She retired from J.C. Penney’s in Salina after 30 years and had previously worked as a secretary for Civil Service at Fort Riley. She was a member of VFW Auxiliary Post 1432 and Trinity Lutheran Church of Salina, where she was a member of the Wednesday Women’s Study Group. She married John Calvin Small on April 21, 1946, in Junction City. He died Aug. 9, 2005.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Colleen, in 1956.
Survivors include two daughters, Denise MacDowell and husband Timothy and Pamela Hoerner and husband Donald, all of Salina; a son, Dennis Small of Salina; two sisters, Lorna Sloan of Rochester, Minn., and Phyllis Long and husband Dean of Lincoln; a brother, Delbert Blase and wife Edith of Cottonwood, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, Colette Sorell and husband David of Salina, Candace Winkel and husband Gary of Hutchinson, Brian Small, Robert Small, Mike MacDowell and Darren MacDowell, all of Salina, and Danny Sidener of Beloit; and eight great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Garwood was born Rena Dorothea Gallentine on Oct. 10, 1917, in Norcatur. She was employed in the laundry department at Decatur County Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John H., and a son, Gary.
Survivors include a son, Thomas of Norton; two daughters, Dorothea Jimenez of Grand Junction, Colo., and Mary Vanover of Clayton; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
