Geneva Giese 77, Abilene, Kansas, died Saturday March 5, 2005 at the Memorial Hospital, Abilene, Kansas. She was born June 26, 1927 at Abilene, Kansas, the daughter of Ezra and Ethel (Teel) Clark. She grew to womanhood in the community of her birth and attended schools in Abilene and Hope, Kansas. In 1958 she was united in marriage with Carl Giese in Abilene, Kansas, and they have made their home there since that time. She was employed by the Duckwall store in Abilene and she worked for the Diamond Motel until retiring. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Abilene, Kansas, the Abilene Eagles Club, and was a former member of the Abilene Sweet Adelines.
Surviving are her husband, Carl, Junction City, Kansas, one daughter Cathi Stroda, Abilene, Kansas, four sisters, Avis Wells, Abilene, Kansas, Francis Kohrs, Gladstone, Missouri, Ethel Steel, Hemet, California, and her twin sister, Genevieve Valk, Lake Katrine, New York, one brother Art Clark, Solomon, Kansas, 2 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, and other relatives. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Crawford, and Anna Barlow, and a brother Ezra Clark.
Funeral services will be held at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, Abilene, Kansas, Wednesday March 9, 2005 at 10:30 AM with Pastor Virgil Eubanks officiating. Burial will be in the Abilene Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Tuesday evening from 7-8 PM where friends may call until time of service.

Nettie M. Bowell 99, Abilene, Kansas, died Monday March 7, 2005 at the Memorial Hospital, Abilene, Kansas. She was born August 9, 1905 near Industry, Kansas, the daughter of Thomas and Margaret (Cook) Arnold. She grew to womanhood in the community of her birth and attended the Athelstane School. She moved to Abilene with her parents as a young woman. On August 23, 1964 she married Walter O. Bowell. They made their home in Abilene. He preceded her in death on May 10, 1981. She was a domestic servant, having cleaned homes and businesses in Abilene as well as ironing and babysitting. She was a member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Abilene and the Happy Homemakers EHU for many years.
Surviving are one daughter, Donna L. Martinitz, Abilene, Kansas, a step daughter Naomi Rider, Abilene, Kansas, three step sons, Donald Bowell, Laron Bowell, both of Abilene, and Gerald Bowell of Manhattan, Kansas, 2 grandchildren, 10 step grandchildren, 27 step great grandchildren, 18 step great great grandchildren and other relatives. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a step son Douglas Bowell, her parents, four brothers, and six sisters and 2 step grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Abilene, Kansas, Thursday March 10, 2005 at 10:30 AM with Jerry Brinker officiating. Burial will be in the Abilene Cemetery. DONALD J. DALHAUS
Donald Jay Dalhaus 72, rural Abilene, Kansas, died Tuesday night April 5, 2005, at his home. He was born September 10, 1932 at Edwardsville, Illinois, the son of Arthur August Frank and Mildred Irene (Morton) Dalhaus. He grew to manhood in the community of his birth and attended the local schools. He was a Korean War veteran serving with the United States Army. On May 17, 1969 he was united in marriage with Patricia Burton. They have made their home northeast of Abilene since 1971. He worked for civil service as a mechanic, and for the Corps of Engineers at Milford Lake. He attended the First Baptist Church, Abilene, was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Solomon, the Harley Owners Group, Junction City, Kansas, and had been a camp counselor for Camp Hope for the past four years.
Surviving are his wife Pat of the home, one son, by a previous marriage, Jeffrey Dalhaus, Columbus, Mississippi. Also two brothers, Arlen Dalhaus, Lake Orion, Michigan, and Richard Dalhaus, Edwardsville, Illinois, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, Abilene, Kansas, Saturday April 9, 2005 at 10:30 Am with Rev. Lindsey Brummer officiating. Mary L. Rosproy 82, Abilene, Kansas, died Wednesday April 6, 2005 at the Memorial Hospital, Abilene, Kansas. She was born March 31, 1923 at Abilene, Kansas, the daughter of Michael J. and Lena E. (Krenger) Rosproy. She grew to womanhood in the community of her birth, attended the local schools and graduated from Abilene High School. She worked in Topeka, Wichita, and for the Modification Center, Denver, Colorado, prior to returning to Abilene. She also worked for the Garden Place Nursery, Abilene.
She was a member of the St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Abilene.
Surviving are one sister Elizabeth Rosproy, Abilene, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Robert and James.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Saturday April 9, 2005 at 1:00 PM with Fr. Henry Baxa officiating. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Arthur S. Carroll Jr. 78, Abilene, Kansas, died Wednesday April 6, 2005 at the Memorial Hospital, Abilene, Kansas. He was born September 11, 1926 at Abilene, Kansas, the son of Arthur S. and Agnes (Patterson) Carroll Sr. He grew to manhood in the community of his birth, attended the local schools and graduated from Abilene High School. He enlisted in the United States Army and served 32 years prior to retiring. He then worked for civil service at the Eisenhower Library, Abilene, Kansas, for 18 years. He was united in marriage with Ruth M. Norwood on June 24, 1978 and she preceded him in death on May 22, 2004. He was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Abilene, and a life member of the VFW.
Surviving are one daughter Renise Carroll Wood and her husband Daniel, of Rosemead, California, 1 granddaughter, 3 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Besides his wife, Ruth, he was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, Eugene, Thurston, and Ronald.
Funeral services will be held at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, Abilene, Kansas, Saturday evening April 9, 2005 at 6:00 PM with Pastor Louis Winn officiating. Burial will be in the Ft. Riley post Cemetery Monday April 11, 2005 at 10:00 AM with Military Graveside Honors. Friends may call at the funeral home starting at 2:00 PM Saturday.
LILLIAN DOROTHEA HARRIS
Dorothea Harris 89, Enterprise, Kansas, died Friday evening April 1, 2005 at the Memorial Hospital, Abilene, Kansas. She was born September 4, 1915 at Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of Carl E. and Martha (Johnson) Carlson. She grew to womanhood in the community of her birth, attended the local schools and graduated from high school. On September 12, 1945 she was united in marriage with Wilfred A. Harris and they made their home in Wichita. She was a homemaker and had been employed by the Wichita Eagle Newspaper. Following the death of her husband in 1994 she moved to McPherson, Kansas, later to Abilene, Kansas, and had made her home near her son in Enterprise, Kansas for the past four years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Abilene, Kansas.
Surviving are two sons, Larry J. Harris, and wife JoRetta, Enterprise, Kansas, and Wilfred A. Harris Jr., and wife Mae, Wichita, Kansas, 7 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and other relatives. Besides her husband, Wilfred, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Carlyle and Russell Carlson and 4 grandchildren.
Following cremation, a graveside service will be held at the McPherson Cemetery, McPherson, Kansas, Monday, April 11, 2005 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Robert Frasier officiating. The Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, Abilene, Kansas, is in charge of arrangements.

MICHAEL G. PANTANO
Michael G. Pantano 72, Abilene, Kansas, died Sunday May 27, 2007 at the Salina Regional Health Center, Salina, Kansas. He was born June 19, 1934 at Quincy, Massachusetts, the son of Domonic and Elizabeth (Tussell) Pantano. He grew to manhood in the community of his birth, attended the local schools and high school. In November of 1952 he enlisted in the United States Army. He served as a medic in Vietnam and retired from the Medical Corps in 1974 after twenty three years of service. He was united in marriage with Catherine L. Hamlet on August 20, 1962 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. They moved to Abilene, Kansas, to make their home in 1970. Following retirement from the Army, he had worked for Ryan’s Amoco, Cowboy Corner, Jostens, and West Country Mart. He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church, Abilene, the World Fast Draw Association, the Kansas Fast Draw Association, and the American Legion and VFW.
Surviving are his wife, Catherine of Abilene, two sons, Mike Pantano, and Robert Rickard, both of Abilene, a sister Frances Eastwick, Quincy, Massachusetts, and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held at the First Southern Baptist Church, Abilene, Kansas, Thursday, May 31, 2007 at 10:00 AM with Pastor Derek Hood officiating. Burial will be in the Ft. CLAYTON C. SCHMIDT
Clayton C. Schmidt 64, Wilton, Iowa, died Thursday June 14, 2007 at the Simpson Memorial Home, West Liberty, Iowa. He was born December 22, 1942 in Chapman, Kansas, the son of Oliver and Ruby (Alexander) Schmidt. He was raised on a farm North of Hope, Kansas, graduating from Hope High School with the class of 1960. He attended Ft. Hays State University Hays, Kansas, and worked as a surgical Technician at hospitals in Wichita and Abilene, Kansas. In 1963 he joined the United States Air Force. He served three tours of duty in Vietnam, along with deployments to Italy, the Philippine Islands, Thailand and various bases in the United States.
On June 26, 1965 Clayton married Maxine Lambert of Abilene, Kansas. She preceded him in death on June 4, 2003.
After his military service, Clayton returned to Ft. Hays State University and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1970. He had worked for Black & Veatch Consulting Engineering Firm, Kansas City, Missouri, Stanley Consultants Engineering Firm, Muscatine, Iowa, and was currently employed by HON Company, Muscatine, Iowa.
He was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Wilton, Iowa, the Wahkonsa Country Club, the American Legion and the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars.
Surviving are one son Levi Schmidt and wife Dawn, Muscatine, Iowa, a sister Maisie Kashka and husband Jim Wineski, Denton, Texas, an aunt, Anna Smith, Herington, Kansas, and other relatives. Besides his wife, Maxine, he was preceded in death by two children, Lisa Marie Schmidt and Paul Lambert Schmidt, and a sister Marilyn Faye Schmidt.

GENEVIEVE ROUSE
Genevieve Rouse, 90, Lebo, Kansas passed away Saturday, June 16, 2007 at her home. She was born August 21, 1916 at Salina, Kansas, the daughter of John and Mamie (Quested) Lapshire. She grew to womanhood in the community of her birth, and attended the local schools and graduated from high school. On April 4, 1939 she was united in marriage with Carl A. Rouse in Salina, Kansas. She was a seamstress for many years and had made many beautiful wedding dresses and specialty clothing for her clients. She sewed for the His & Her Shoppe and Wardens in Salina. Most of her life was spent in Salina before moving back to Solomon, Kansas in 1982. Mr. Rouse preceded her in death in 1969. She continued to sew for her customers until moving to Lebo, Kansas, to make her home in 2001. She was a member of the Solomon Methodist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Beverly Birnbaum and husband Lyle, Lebo, Kansas, a son Dennis Rouse and wife, Mary, Topeka, Kansas, a sister Marguerite Franklin, Camp Verde, Arizona, 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 1 great great granddaughter, and other relatives. Besides her husband Carl, she was preceded in death by a daughter Phyllis Davis, a son Darrell Rouse, 2 brothers, Ray Lapshire, and Roy Lapshire, a half brother Lawrence Peterson and two half sisters, Irene Erickson and Grace Smith.
Funeral services will be held Thursday June 21, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Carlson-Becker Funeral Home, Solomon, Kansas, with Rev. Jack Craig officiating. Burial will be in the Prairie Mound Cemetery, Solomon, Kansas. Friends may call at the funeral home after 12:00 PM Wednesday.

MABEL HENRICKS
Mabel Henricks, 89, Herington, died July12, 2007 in the Herington Municipal Hospital, Herington, Kansas. She was born September 22, 1917 in Shady Brook, Kansas the daughter of Fred A. and Sophia A. (Schlesener) Kandt. She attended school in the community of her birth and graduated from Woodbine High School, 1936.
On April 30, 1939 Mabel married Edgar L. Henricks in Herington, Kansas. He preceded her in death December 24, 1982.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Herington, KS. She was also an active leader in the church, American Lutheran Church Women, Dickinson County Extension Council, EHU, Kansas 4-H, Woodbine Lions Club, Woodbine Senior Citizens.
Surviving are 3 sons, Dean and wife Kathy of Carmichael, CA, Wayne and wife Jan of Olathe, KS. Vernon and wife Lane of Manhattan, KS. Six grandchildren, Amy Gariano, Melissa, Sara, Andre’a, Jordon and Lauren Henricks, Two great grandchildren,Whitney and William Gariano, one sister Marjorie Hammond of Augusta, Kansas, and other relatives.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by one son Maurice Henricks, one sister, Rose Bernhardt, and one brother Roy W. Kandt.
Funeral services will be held at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Herington, Kansas, Monday, July 16, 2007, at 10:00 AM, with Pastor Bill Peterson officiating. Katharine C. Etherington 87, Abilene, Kansas, died Monday September 17, 2007 at the Village Manor, Abilene, Kansas. She was born April 11, 1920 at Talmage, Kansas, the daughter of Benjamin W. and Clara (Korn) Stewart. She grew to womanhood in the community of her birth, attended the Talmage Schools and graduated from Talmage High School. On September 9, 1945 she was united in marriage with George C. Etherington in Abilene, Kansas. They made their home in Salina and Abilene, Kansas. They later divorced. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Abilene; she was a homemaker, worked at the Flower Box, Abilene, volunteered at the Memorial Hospital, Abilene, was a member of the Antique Club, and the Bridge Club, taught Sunday school and was a Girl Scout Leader.
Surviving are one son, Stewart Ray Etherington, Abilene, Kansas, two daughters, Judith Ann Etherington, Los Gatos, California, and Mary Jane Etherington, Martha?s Vineyard, Massachusetts, 4 grandchildren, Katie Bowell, Sara Phillips, Simon Etherington and Harvey Etherington, three great grandchildren, Grace Bowell, Judah Bowell and Ella Kate Phillips, and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother Col. Everett W. Stewart.

Emmaline Augusta Janke 83, Abilene, Kansas, died Thursday September 13, 2007 at the Memorial Hospital, Abilene, Kansas. She was born February 15, 1924 at Odessa, Missouri the daughter of August and Emma (Fiegenbaum) Begemann. She grew to womanhood in the community of her birth, attended the Mayview, Missouri, schools, graduated from Mayview High School, and St. Luke?s School of Nursing. On May 14, 1949 she was united in marriage with Levine M. Janke in Mayview, Missouri. They made their home in the Lyona community, Dickinson County, Kansas. She was a member of the Army Student Nurse Corps during WW II, and worked for a Doctor?s office on the Country Club Plaza, Kansas City. After moving to the Lyona Community she worked part time as a nurse at the Rock Springs Ranch, and from 1973-1993 at the Lutheran Home, Herington, Kansas. She was a member of the Lyona United Methodist Church, rural Junction City, the United Methodist Women, Extension Homemakers, Carry Creek Friendship Club, was a 4-H project leader, and youth Sunday School Superintendent. Mr. Janke preceded her in death on January 13, 1980 and she had been a resident of the Sterling House, Abilene, Kansas, for the past 15 months.
Surviving are one son Edward Janke and wife Nancy, Chapman, two daughters, Carol Boggs and husband Ron, Hiawatha, Kansas, and Betsy Breitkreutz and husband Ken, Leoti, Kansas, two brothers, Edward Begemann and wife Kathleen and Martin Begemann and wife Bessie, Higginsville, Missouri, four sisters, Irene Knehans, Clare Marie Werning and husband Elmer, Grace Werning and husband Richard all of Higginsville, Missouri and Edna Ann Struchtemeyer and husband Elmer, Lexington, Missouri, 6 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, 2 great grandsons, and other relatives. Besides her husband, Levine, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Lydia Jaecke, and Ruby Fleischman, and a brother August William Begemann.

Clifford Ohm Oard 79, Topeka, Kansas, died Friday September 14, 2007 at his home in Topeka. He was born October 25, 1927 at Manchester, Kansas, the son of Benjamin and Mabel (Kissling) Oard. He grew to manhood in the community of his birth, attended the Mayfield Grade School and Longford High School. He then worked for the Longford Alfalfa Mill. On September 25, 1948 he was united in marriage with Wilma Hamme in Longford, Kansas. They lived and farmed in the Longford Community and he also worked as a carpenter. They moved to Topeka, Kansas in 1988 to make their home near their youngest daughter.
He was a member of the Longford United Methodist Church, Longford, Kansas.
Surviving is his wife Wilma of the home, one daughter, Dixie Moses and husband Bob, Olathe, Kansas, two sisters, Garnett Ferguson, Abilene, Kansas, and Bonnie Slingsby and husband Duane, Clay Center, Kansas, a brother Rudy Oard and wife Marge, Wakefield, Kansas, two grandchildren, Brent Moses and wife Kinsey, Council Grove, Kansas, and Abby Hess and husband Aric, Olathe, Kansas, five great grandchildren, Colter and Tori Moses, Lauren, Julia and Mariah Hess, his adopted family, George and Sally Hough and daughters, Chloe and Sage, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Lori Oard on September 13, 1999, three brothers, Orville, Bob, and John Oard, four sisters, Emerald Mullin, Ruby Carlson, Pearl Faulkner, and Opal Heigele.

Darlene Engle, 77, of Solomon, Kansas passed away Saturday, September 15, 2007 at Hospice of Salina, Salina, Kansas. She was born July 15, 1930 in Salina, Kansas the daughter of Carl and Frances (Engle) Meek. She grew to womanhood in the Solomon area and attended the local schools, graduating with the class of 1948. On Feb. 13, 1949 she was united in marriage with Lyle Engle in Salina, Kansas. She was a homemaker and self employed house keeper, a member of the United Presbyterian Church and United Presbyterian Women. She had been a leader of the Solomon Girl Scouts and was a Lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of USA.
She is survived by her husband Lyle of the home, one son, Lynn of Westminster, Colorado, three daughters, Sharon Brewer of Dallas, Texas, Karla Johnson of Solomon, and Jerri Drummond of Minneapolis, Kansas, 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Donna Haley of Phoenix, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Dean.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2007 at the United Presbyterian Church, Solomon with Rev. Jack Craig officiating. Burial will be in the Roselawn Cemetery, Salina. Boyd V. Stroda, 78, Hope, passed away Friday, Sept 21, 2007 at the Salina Regional Health Center, Salina. He was born July 8, 1929 at Hope, Kansas the son of Vern P. and Gladys M (Smith) Stroda. He grew to manhood in the community of his birth, attended the Union Valley School District #33 and graduated from Hope High School with the Class of 1947. On Sept. 8, 1956 he was united in marriage with Marilyn C Bittner in Herington, KS. He was a farmer/stockman, a member of the St. Phillips Catholic Church, Hope, and a Knight of Columbus, Herington. He also served on the Rural Vista School District #481 Board of Education for 12 years.
Surviving are his wife, Marilyn of the home, three sons, Daniel of Ottumwa, Iowa, Nicholas Stroda of Gardner, Kansas, and Timothy of Manhattan, Kansas. Also surviving is one sister, Edna Polston and one brother, Clarence Stroda, both of Hope, 7 grandchildren and one great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by one brother, Max and 2 sisters in infancy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007 at the St. Phillips Catholic Church, Hope with Fr. Mark Wesely officiating. Burial will be in the St. Phillips Cemetery, Hope. A parish rosary and family visitation will be held at 7:30 PM Monday evening at the Carlson-Becker Funeral Home, Hope, where friends may call until time of services.
The family of Boyd Stroda suggests memorial contributions in his name to the Hope School Library. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.
