Katharine C. Etherington 87, Abilene, Kansas, died Monday September 17, 2007 at the Village Manor, Abilene, Kansas. She was born April 11, 1920 at Talmage, Kansas, the daughter of Benjamin W. and Clara (Korn) Stewart. She grew to womanhood in the community of her birth, attended the Talmage Schools and graduated from Talmage High School. On September 9, 1945 she was united in marriage with George C. Etherington in Abilene, Kansas. They made their home in Salina and Abilene, Kansas. They later divorced. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Abilene; she was a homemaker, worked at the Flower Box, Abilene, volunteered at the Memorial Hospital, Abilene, was a member of the Antique Club, and the Bridge Club, taught Sunday school and was a Girl Scout Leader.
Surviving are one son, Stewart Ray Etherington, Abilene, Kansas, two daughters, Judith Ann Etherington, Los Gatos, California, and Mary Jane Etherington, Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, 4 grandchildren, Katie Bowell, Sara Phillips, Simon Etherington and Harvey Etherington, three great grandchildren, Grace Bowell, Judah Bowell and Ella Kate Phillips, and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother Col. Everett W. Stewart.
Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Friday September 21, 2007 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Peter Rupprecht officiating. Private inurnment will be in the Abilene Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, Abilene, Kansas, Thursday evening from 7-8 PM.

ELVA SANDOW
Elva Sandow, 77, Salina, passed away Sept. 23, 2007 at the Kansas Medical Center, Andover, Kansas. She was born Jan. 4, 1930 in Hope, Kansas the daughter of Harold and Helen (Whipple) Anderson. She grew to womanhood in the community of her birth and attended the local schools, graduating from Hope High School with the Class of 1948. On June 6, 1948 she was united in marriage with Delmar Sandow in Hope, Kansas. They farmed in the Hope area, and were active members of the First Baptist Church of Dickinson County until moving to Salina in 1979. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, Salina, the Avon Presidents Club, an Avon representative for 28 years, had worked at JC Penney for 30 years and Sam’s Club for 9 years.
She is survived by four daughters, Sharon Hemmy of Salina, Christine Baker of Green Valley, Arizona, Gerri Kerth of Salina, and Marci Soukup of Salina, two sons, Gary Sandow of Salina, and Kevin Sandow of Hope, Kansas. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren one brother, Ed Anderson of Hope, Kansas, and three sisters, Jean Ecklund of Herington, Kansas, Mary Birch of Dallas, Texas, and Marie Stewart of Walker, Louisiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Delmar, three grand daughters, 2 brothers, Glen and Bill Anderson and one sister, Lucille Lake.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday Sept. 28, 2007 at the First Church of the Nazarene, Salina with Rev. Jon Filipi officiating. Burial will be in First Baptist Church of Dickinson County Cemetery, near Dillon, Kansas at 1:30 PM. The family will receive friends Thursday Sept. 27, 2007 from 7-8 PM at the Carlson-Becker Funeral Home, Solomon.

MARGARET McKENZIE
Margaret McKenzie 88, former Solomon, Kansas, resident died Tuesday evening September 25, 2007 at the Pioneer Ridge Retirement Center, Lawrence, Kansas. She was born June 30, 1919 at Langley, KS the daughter of Colby and Eva Smith. She grew to womanhood in the community of her birth, attended the local schools and graduated from Brookville High School with the class of 1938. On June 12, 1941 she was united in marriage with Donald K. McKenzie in Herington, Kansas. Their entire married life was spent farming in the Solomon community. Mr. McKenzie preceded her in death on March 31, 1996. She was a homemaker and a lifetime member of Eastern Star and the Solomon Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two sons and their wives; Kenneth and Rachel McKenzie of Lawrence, and Ronald and Laurie McKenzie of Lincoln, NE; one sister, Mildred Larson of Council Grove; sister-in-law Phyllis Smith of Solomon; four granddaughters and their spouses, three great granddaughters, one great grandson and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Solomon, Kansas, on Saturday September 29, 2007 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Jack Craig officiating. Burial will be in the Prairie Mound Cemetery, Solomon. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until time of services at the church. CEOLA E. SCHIMMING
Ceola E. Schimming 90, Hope, Kansas, died Wednesday September 26, 2007 at the Chapman Valley Manor, Chapman, Kansas. She was born November 11, 1916 at Woodbine, Kansas, the daughter of Henry and Amelia (Brehm) Gatch. She grew to womanhood in the community of her birth, attended the Walnut Grove Grade School and graduated from Dickinson County Community High School with the class of 1934. She also attended Baker University. She was united in marriage with Joseph Whitehair and they later divorced. She was a homemaker, worked for the Abilene Reflector Chronicle for seven years and worked for the Hope School System as a secretary for twenty-four years. On November 22, 1968 she married Herbert Schimming in White City, Kansas. He preceded her in death on July 17, 1998.
Surviving are one son Steve Whitehair and wife Rhonda, Hope, Kansas, one daughter Dianne Richart and husband Gene, Nixa, Missouri, a stepdaughter, Yvonne Lee, El Dorado, Kansas, 3 grandchildren, Sam Richart and wife Kristy, Nixa, Missouri, Nick Richart, Billings, Missouri, and Jenny Whitehair, Hope, Kansas, 1 step grandchild, Justin Schlesener, Junction City, Kansas, and 1 great grandchild, Logan Richart, Nixa, Missouri.
Her parents, her husband Herbert, a stepson Larry Schimming, two brothers, Clarence and Dewain Gatch, and a sister Florence Aebi preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held at the Carlson-Becker Funeral Home, Hope, Kansas, Monday October 1, 2007 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Bill Peterson officiating. Burial will be in the Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Sunday evening from 7-8 PM.

DON L. WOLFE
Don L. Wolfe, 71, Solomon, died Sunday Sept. 23, 2007 at the Salina Regional Health Center, Salina. He was born Nov 11, 1935 near Delphos, Kansas the son of Vladimer and Elsie (Cherney) Wolfe. He attended District No. 74 for Grade School and graduated from Delphos High School with the class of 1954. On May 20, 1967 he was united in marriage with Frances Jordan in Solomon, Kansas. He had lived in Solomon for 40 years, worked for Great Plains Manufacturing for 29 years, was a member of ZCBJ Lodge #203 and the United Methodist Church, Solomon.
He is survived by his wife Frances of the home, 2 daughters, Dawnetta Bennett and husband Jim of Salina, and Elsie Potter and husband Evan of Salina, and 5 grandchildren. Also, surviving is one brother, Vladie Wolfe of Glasco, Kansas.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007 at 10:30 AM at the Carlson-Becker Funeral Home with Pastor Jack Craig officiating. Burial will be in the Prairie Mound Cemetery, Solomon. Friends may call at the funeral home until time of services.

Adelia E. Hamme 90, Abilene, Kansas, died Tuesday October 2, 2007 at the Village Manor, Abilene, Kansas. She was born December 10, 1916 at Wakefield, Kansas, the daughter of John H. and Blanche (Arnold) Bergmeier. She grew to womanhood in the community of her birth and attended the local schools. On November 3, 1937 she was united in marriage with Jesse M. Hamme in Abilene, Kansas. They made their home in the Manchester community and later moved to Abilene, Kansas, to make their home. Mr. Hamme preceded her in death on January 19, 1971. She was a homemaker and had worked at the Reynolds Sale Barn, Abilene. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Abilene, and the Christian Women’s Club.
Surviving are two daughters, Lenece Sue Smith, Topeka, Kansas, and Audrey Lou Carson, Bennington, Kansas, three brothers, Calvin Bergmeier, Topeka, Kansas, Pat Bergmeier, Hutchinson, Kansas, and Dean Bergmeier, Pocatello, Idaho, a sister, Opal Koerner, Wakefield, Kansas , 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and other relatives. Besides her husband Jesse, she was preceded in death by a son Jack Hamme in 1996, her parents, a brother Clarence Bergmeier, and a sister Betty Lundin.

ELDON GRANT McCONKEY
Eldon G. McConkey 85, Abilene, Kansas, died Sunday evening October 7, 2007 at his home. He was born March 27, 1922 at Solomon, Kansas, the son of Benjamin and Rachel (Mahar) McConkey. He grew to manhood in the community of his birth, attended the local schools and graduated from Solomon High School. He was a veteran of WW II serving in the Army Air Corps. On April 1, 1951 he was united in marriage with Velma Abram in Salina, Kansas. They made their home in Solomon, Abilene, and later Hillsboro for five years and returned to Abilene to make their home since that time. He worked for Kansas Power and Light and retired as a sub station inspector.
Surviving are his wife Velma, of the home, one son Steven McConkey, Tonganoxie, Kansas, two brothers, Howard McConkey, Abilene, Kansas, and Sherril McConkey, Salina, Kansas, two sisters, Carol Redger, Abilene, Kansas, and Phyllis Gish, Vallejo, California, 5 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Heesch in 1995, also his parents, a brother Lloyd McConkey, and a sister Lorine Wiggins.

REV. WILLIAM LESTER OWENS
Rev. William Lester Owens 88, Abilene, Kansas, died Tuesday February 26, 2008 at the Memorial Hospital, Abilene, Kansas. He was born January 29, 1920 in Abilene, Kansas, the son of Thomas G. and Queenie (Parks) Owens. He grew to manhood in Junetta Nebraska in 1927 until 1936, he then moved to Hastings and finished high school. For two years he attended Hastings College and then went to Manhattan Bible College in 1939. He earned his AB degree at Manhattan Christian College, Manhattan, Kansas. He was a veteran of WW II serving with the United States Navy. On June 15, 1941 he was united in marriage with Margaret Edith Millburn in Topeka, Kansas, They served churches in Topeka, Horton, Herington, and Florence, Kansas, prior to moving to Abilene in 1984. Mrs. Owens preceded him in death on January 4, 2006. He was a retired minister, a member of the First Christian Church, Abilene, and a member of the American Legion Post, Abilene.
Surviving are one son David Owens, Roper, North Carolina, three daughters, Sharon Stovall, Abilene, Kansas, Diana Bradley, Red Oak, Texas, and Peggy Waniska, Topeka, Kansas, 7 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and other relatives. Besides his wife, Margaret, he was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Patricia Allen, a granddaughter Marsha Stovall and one grandson Christopher Bradley, a brother Chester Owens

Nina Ehrsam 92, Abilene, Kansas, died Wednesday February 27, 2008 at the Chapman Valley Manor, Chapman, Kansas. She was born March 2, 1915 at Strong City, Kansas, the daughter of Roy B. and Berta P. (Sherman) Grubbs. She moved to Chicago, Illinois as a child and attended the local schools. On August 15, 1934 she was united in marriage with Ernest M. Ehrsam in Hope, Kansas. They made their home in Abilene and Mr. Ehrsam preceded her in death on May 12, 2000. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church, Abilene.
Surviving are a step brother, Melvin Hershaw, Douglas, Michigan, a nephew Kay McKee, Abilene, Kansas, adopted family Mike and Theresa Brierton, Abilene, and other relatives. Besides her husband Ernest she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Irwin and Tracy Grubbs, and two sisters, Doris Kohrs, and Mabel Peterson.

Martha A. Shank 63, Abilene, Kansas, died Monday February 25, 2008 at the Memorial Hospital, Abilene, Kansas. She was born June 5, 1944 in Jacksonville, Florida, the daughter of E.D. and Virginia (Goodwin) Mustoe. She moved to Rexford, Kansas, with her parents as a child, attended the Rexford schools, Rexford High School and graduated from Kansas State University with the class of 1966 with a degree in Secondary Education. On August 14, 1966 she was united in marriage with Glen Shank in Rexford, Kansas. They made their home in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she taught school and they moved to Abilene, Kansas, in 1973. She attended the Zion Brethren In Christ Church, was a Sunday school teacher, active in the music and worship program at the church, worked with the Community Youth program, MOPS, Christian Women’s Club, taught piano lessons, and tutored. She was a committed wife, mother and loved the Lord.
Surviving are her husband Glen of the home, one daughter Lisa Holt and husband Mick of Sedan, Kansas, one son Brad Shank and wife Jenna, Las Cruces, New Mexico, her mother Virginia Mustoe, Topeka, Kansas, two sisters, Barb Stetler, Overland Park, Kansas, and Dalene Strieff, Chicago, Illinois, 7 grandchildren and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her father.

Ethel L. Schimming 89, Hope, Kansas, died Monday November 17,2008 at the Memorial Hospital, Abilene, Kansas. She was born April 4, 1919 at Abilene, Kansas, the daughter of John and Eula (Derrick) Rakestraw. She grew to womanhood in the rural Abilene area, attended the local schools, and graduated from Dickinson County High School with the class of 1937. She was united in marriage with Herbert P. Schimming and they later divorced. She had been a Hope, Kansas, resident since 1939. She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Herington, Kansas, and the Rebekah Circle. She taught school at the New Basel School for two years and worked as a cook and waitress at the Hope Café for more than twenty years.
Surviving are one daughter, Yvonne Lee, El Dorado, Kansas, one sister Evelyn Stillwagon, Abilene, Kansas, a sister-in-law Betty Kline, Newton, Kansas, and other relatives. A son Larry D. Schimming preceded her in death in 1969.

Phyllis Jean Wuthnow 64, former Hope, Kansas, resident died Sunday November 2, 2008 at the Medical City Hospital, Dallas, Texas, from complications of pancreatitis. She was born July 28, 1944 at Herington, Kansas, the daughter of Roland and LaVerna (Larsen) Wuthnow. She grew to womanhood in the Hope, Kansas, area, attended the local schools and graduated from Hope High School with the class of 1962. She attended Kansas Wesleyan University, Salina, and Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, Kansas, She never married. She was a member of the Hope United Methodist Church, and the Dallas Bead society and enjoyed wearing unusual necklaces. She was a secretary and had worked for the Aetna Life & Casualty Company, Hartford, CT., Atlantic Richfield Oil Company, and NJ and Associates in Dallas.
Surviving are one sister Joy Schell, and husband Leo, Manhattan, Kansas, a nephew Douglas Schell and wife Laurie and their daughters, Claire and Ada, Independence, MO., niece Laura Graber and husband Jack and their son Noah and daughter Hannah, Littleton, Colorado, and other relatives.
