Obituary: Letha M. Sexton, 81, Manhattan, KS passed away Friday, April 20, 2007 in the Stoneybrook Retirement Community, Manhattan.

She was born June 18, 1925 at Industry, KS, the daughter of John L. Brown and Margaret Howie Brown. She grew up in Industry where she attended the local schools and was a 1943 graduate of the Abilene High School. She later attended the Brown-Mackie Business College, Salina.

She was united in marriage to Grice Sexton on November 6, 1946 at Industry. He survives of the home.

Letha was a homemaker and worked for over 24 years as an administrative secretary at the Memorial Hospital, Manhattan. She retired in 1990.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, Seroptimist, Manhattan Chapter No. 209, O.E.S., Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Mayflower, life member of the Gideons International and spent countless hours as a volunteer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Francis Brown; and a sister Adaline Clarke.

In addition to her husband, Letha is survived by a son, Joe Sexton, Manhattan; a daughter, Jean Ann Reynard, Manhattan; five grandchildren, Kellie Maydew, Cami Eaton, Brian Carlson and Luke and Lane Reynard; five great grandchildren, Payson, Jenson and Kierson Maydew and Addie and Ava Eaton; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2007 at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Rev. Neil Engle and the Rev. Ben Duerfeldt officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Memorial contributions can be made to Gideons International and left in care of the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan.

The family of Mrs. Sexton will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m., Monday, April 23, 2007 at the funeral home.

Obituary: Raymond Alonzo Taylor, 73, Manhattan, KS passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2007 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

He was born February 12, 1934 at Manhattan the son of Tom Taylor and Edith Jeeter Taylor. He grew up in Manhattan and attended the local schools. He had been a longtime area resident.

He was married to Anna E. Burnett on October 30, 1989, Manhattan. She survives.

Mr. Taylor was a concrete finisher for Paul Gilman. In later years he was self employed. He was in the US Navy and US Army.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son Raymond Taylor, Jr., Oakley, CA and four step-sons, Richard Burnett and Alphonso Burnett both of Manhattan, Frank Burnett, Wamego, and Glenn Burnett of Oakley CA; 2 daughters, Dalana Taylor and LaShant Taylor both of Oakley CA; two step-daughters, Thomascina Ward, Newport Beach, VA and Francina Darby, Junction City; two sisters, Virginia Nash, Clinton, MO and Patricia Taylor, Manhattan; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded by his parents; 3 half brothers; and 3 brothers, William, Walter “Buddy”, and Jimmie Taylor; and two half sisters, Ruby Jones and Frances Jackson.

He was cremated. Graveside services will be Friday, April 27, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. with family receiving friends one hour before service. Burial will be in the Sunrise Cemetery with military honor guard. A procession will be formed to go to the cemetery.

The Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Obituary: Margaret R. Adams, 77, formerly of Manhattan, KS, passed away Sunday, April 29, 2007 in the Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Shawnee Mission, KS.

She was born June 27, 1929 at Manhattan, the daughter of James R. Rowe and Hilda Theresa Mallon Rowe. She grew up in Manhattan, where she attended the local schools and was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy. She had also attended Kansas State University.

She was united in marriage to Robert N. Adams on September 4, 1954 at Manhattan.

With the exception of those years when she lived in Germany and state side military bases following her husband’s military career, Mrs. Adams had been a lifelong Kansas resident. She was a homemaker and a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, while residing in Manhattan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Robert and Bill; and five sisters, Betty, Gladys, Bertha, Thelma and Bessie.

Survivors include two sons, Michael E. Adams, and his wife, Julie, Washington, DC and Joseph N. Adams, Overland Park, KS; four daughters, Vicki L. Adams, Theodore, AL, Barbara M. Markovich, and her husband, Greg, Overland Park, KS, Theresa A. Nickum, and her husband, Bill, Lansing, KS and Carol M. Arsenault, and her husband, Jeff, Chicago, IL; a brother, James Rowe of Riverside, California; four sisters, Patty Massey, Madison, WI and Bernice Enlow, Jean Jensen and Joan Ackerman, all of Manhattan; 15 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

A Rosary and Vigil service will be at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 1, 2007 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. A visitation for family and friends will immediately follow the Rosary service.

Private family graveside services will be Wednesday, May 2, 2007 in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Ogden with Father Joseph Popelka officiating.

Memorial contributions can be made to Homestead Assisted Living, Leavenworth, KS or the Alzheimer’s Disease Association and sent in care of the funeral home.

Obituary: Emilio Gutierez, 68, a longtime Manhattan resident, passed away Sunday, April 29, 2007 in the Westy Community Care Home, Westmoreland.

He was born September 4, 1938 at Florence, CO, the son of Ralph Gutierez and Petra Ouardo Gutierez. He grew up Canon City, CO and attended the local schools.

He was united in marriage Mary Gomez on April 15, 1960 at Canon City. They were later divorced.

Mr. Gutierez worked as a roofer and had been a Manhattan area resident since 1970. He was a member of the Catholic Church.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph A. Gutierez, California and Anthony Ray Gutierez, Wichita, KS; a step son, Eddie Vigil, Colorado Springs, CO; a daughter, Jessica Gutierez, Manhattan; two sisters, Betty Gonzalez and Ruby Gonzalez, both of California; and two grandchildren, Briyona and Kobe Gutierez.

Cremation is planned. Private family graveside inurnment services will be held in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan. The Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan is in charge of arrangements.

Obituary: Mayme Veneta McCrann Tatman passed away on October 10, 2006 in Murfreesboro, TN. Her remains will be interred at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 2, 2007 in the Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan. She will join her husband of 57 years, Philip Jesse Tatman, as well as her brother, Charles Marion McCrann, and his wife, Sarah Margaret Toeffler McCrann. Mayme is survived by her daughter, Dr. Micki Jo Tatman Young, her grandson, Philip Jay Young and two great granddaughters, Caroline Elizabeth Young and Catherine Ann Michelle Young, all of Murfreesboro. She also has a half sister, Judy Jill Scalan Bounds of Plano, TX, a nephew, Terrance Michael McCrann of St. Peters, MO and a niece, Lisa Patt McCrann of Manhattan.

Mayme graduated from Kansas State University in 1931 with multiple majors. She spent her long life devoted to her family, by working outside the home, inside the home and in the community. She was accomplished in cooking, sewing, tailoring, knitting, crocheting, macramé, needlepoint and caning. She applied these skills in Girl Scout work, adult education and Red Cross First Aid instruction. The Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan is in charge of local arrangements.

Obituary: Ray C. McManis, 85, Manhattan, KS passed away Saturday, June 30, 2007 in the Stoneybrook Retirement Community, Manhattan.

Ray was born March 18, 1922 in Manhattan, KS, to Irwin C. McManis and Isabel Wreath McManis.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in China, Burma, and India during World War II.

He was united in marriage to Erma E. Pawsey on May 25, 1947 in Offerle, KS. She survives.

Mr. McManis worked as a local self-employed building contractor for 35 years. He was a charter member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church, Pearce-Keller American Legion Post No. 17, Lee Pierson V.F.W Post No. 1786 and Elks Lodge No. 1185, all of Manhattan. He was a cheerful and caring man who loved to make people smile. He never met a stranger.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Wayne, Clair, Alex, Paul and fraternal twin, Roy McManis; and three sisters, Mary McEvers, Marge Duvall and Dorothy Corn.

In addition to his wife, Mr. McManis is survived by two sons, Dennis R. McManis, and his wife, Linda, New Orleans, LA and DeWayne McManis, and his wife, Jan, Manhattan; a daughter, Dianne I. Potee, Lee’s Summit, MO; a sister, Thelma Tolliver, Kansas City, MO; six grandchildren, Tracy, Matthew, Dustin, Daniel, Erin and Kevin; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Obituary: L. Eugene “Gene” Gishwiller, 88, Manhattan, KS passed away Thursday, August 16, 2007 in the Meadowlark Hills/Honstead House, Manhattan.

He was born February 27, 1919 at Almena, KS, the son of Louis Newcomb Gishwiller and Blanche Erdine Wade Gishwiller. He grew up in Almena, where he attended the local schools and was a 1936 graduate of the Almena High School. He attended Ft. Hays State University and, after receiving his teaching certificate, taught school in Dresden and Tribune, KS. Before World War II, he worked for the Corps of Engineers and later as a ship fitter in the Kaiser Shipyards in Vancouver, WA.

He was united in marriage to Irva Ione Walkey on April 9, 1939 at Dresden, KS. She survives of the home.

Mr. Gishwiller was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy as an electronics technician. He was discharged in 1946 at the rank of Petty Office, Second Class.

Following his military discharge, Mr. Gishwiller attended Kansas State University and graduated in 1948 with a degree in Business. He worked as a claims adjuster for the Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Co. in Colby, KS from 1948-1952 and in Garden City, KS from 1952-1959. He came to Manhattan in 1959 to work as the assistant claims manager at Farm Bureau. He retired in 1984.

He was an active member of the First Congregational Church, Manhattan. Other memberships included the Pearce-Keller American Legion Post No. 17, Sunflower Lions Club, Sertoma Club, Phi Kappa Phi, R.S.V.P., Riley County Council on Aging, Kansas Farm Bureau Retirees, Homecare and Manhattan Chapter of A.A.R.P. While working at Farm Bureau, he was active in the Kaw Valley Claims Association, Kansas Claims Association and the Professional Claims Association of America, Southwest Division.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Armida Smith, Winifred Hedges and Florence Smith.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Gishwiller is survived by a son, Galen Gishwiller, and his wife, Joan, Burnsville, MN; a daughter, Jeanne Urban, and her husband, Richard, Wichita, KS; four grandchildren, Dennis and Courtney Gishwiller, Mike Urban, and his wife, Vickie and Melissa Wefald, and her husband, Andy; five great grandchildren, Ben, Abbe and Sam Urban and Kaeli and Cassie Wefald.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 18, 2007 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Rev. Kent Cormack officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Memorial contributions can be made to the First Congregational Church; Sertoma Foundation; or the KSU Alumni Association and left in care of the funeral home.

The family of Mr. Gishwiller will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.

Obituary: Daniel M. Rodriguez, 78, Manhattan, KS passed away Sunday, August 12, 2007 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

He was born February 15, 1929 at Kansas City, MO, the son of John Martin Rodriguez and Marguerite Martinez Rodriguez. He grew up in Mexico City where he attended the local schools.

He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ann Ayala on May 17, 1952 at Kansas City. She preceded him in death on December 6, 2006.

In 1947, at the age of 18, Mr. Rodriguez returned to Kansas City and started working as an electrician for the Santa Fe Railroad. In 1992, after 44 years of service, he retired from the railroad as a Dept. of Transportation Inspector. He had been a Manhattan resident since 2001.

He was a member of the College Avenue United Methodist Church, Manhattan and volunteered many hours at the Flint Hills Job Corp.

Survivors include two daughters, Rosanna E. Mitchell, Manhattan and Dr. Rebekah S. Nunn, Tulsa, OK; two sons, John M. Rodriguez, Olathe, KS and Daniel R. Rodriguez, Shawnee, KS; four sisters, Paz Hernandez and Esperanza Martinez, both of Kansas City, MO, Ruth Aleman, Austin, TX and Virginia Dela Rosa, Mexico City; seven grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, August 15, 2007 in the College Ave. United Methodist Church, Manhattan with the Rev. Larry Fry and Father Keith Weber officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m., Tuesday at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan.

Additional services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 18, 2007 in the First Baptist Church, Kansas City, MO. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until service time at the church. Cremation will follow with inurnment at a later date in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Kansas City, KS.
