Obituary: Karen J. Mall, 45, Manhattan, KS passed away Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at the K.U. Medical Center, Kansas City, KS.

She was born July 24, 1963 at Liberal, KS, the daughter of Erwin L. Brewer and Lila J. (Oblander) Brewer. She grew up in Liberal, where she attended the local schools and was 1981 graduate of the Liberal High School. She also attended Seward County Community College and received her BS degree from Cameron University, Lawton, OK. She later attended Kansas State University, Manhattan receiving a Masters Degree in Computer Science.

She was united in marriage Scott E. Mall on September 24, 1994 at Manhattan. He survives of the home.

At the time of her death, Karen was a Systems Analyst for the Farm Bureau Financial Services, Manhattan and was a member of the Manhattan Pilot Club. Other memberships included the First United Methodist Church, Liberal.

In addition to her husband, Karen is survived by her mother, Lila J. Hagaman, Liberal; and a brother, Douglas R. Brewer, Liberal.

She was preceded in death by her father, Erwin L. Brewer in 1974; and her step father, Jay Hagaman in 2007.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 21, 2008 in the First United Methodist Church, Manhattan with the Rev. Kay Scarbrough officiating. Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 22, 2008 in the Liberal City Cemetery, Liberal, KS.

Karen’s family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m., Thursday, November 20, 2008 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan.

Obituary: Mary Ann Goudy, 77, a former Manhattan resident, passed away Thursday, April 16, 2009 in a Fallbrook, CA hospital.

She was born December 7, 1931 at Hays, KS, the daughter of William Joseph Mallon and Cora Belle Allen Mallon. She came to Manhattan with her family, in 1944, where she continued her education and was a 1950 graduate of the Sacred Heart Academy.

She was united in marriage to Richard Goudy on June 23, 1950 at Manhattan. Mary Ann and Richard lived many years in California before moving back to Manhattan in 1995. He preceded her in death on September 21, 2002. Mrs. Goudy continued to live in Manhattan until moving to Fallbrook in 2006.

While in Manhattan, she was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, the Altar Society and volunteered at the church’s Budget Shop. She continued her volunteer work in California at the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store, Fallbrook Food Pantry, Fallbrook Library, and St. Peter’s Catholic Church Women’s Guild.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Goudy was preceded in death by her parents; and four brothers, James, Charles, Eugene and Joseph Mallon.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Kathleen “Kate” O’Brien, and her husband, Pat, Fallbrook, CA; a sister, Dorothy Wesselmann, Woodstock, GA; and two granddaughters, Natalie and Regina O’Brien.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 23, 2009 in the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Manhattan with Father Joseph Popelka as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Ogden, KS.

A Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 22, 2009 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan.

Obituary: Josephine (Josie) Vera, 75, of Arlington Texas, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009, at Arlington Memorial Hospital in Arlington, Texas, of natural causes. She received the last rites of the Catholic Church.

Josephine was born in Manhattan, Kansas to her beloved parents Frank G. and Elizabeth (Silva) Vera on October 20, 1933. Josephine graduated from Manhattan High School and Mary Mount College School of Nursing in Salina, Kansas. After graduation she began her career working as a surgical nurse in Halstead, Kansas. She moved to Wichita, Kansas where she worked at St. Joseph Via Christie Medical Center, where she remained for the rest of her career. Her main focus was surgical nursing before she fell in love with teaching. She eventually moved up to Assistant Director of In-Service Nursing and had the privilege of teaching many fine nurses over the years. She was very accomplished in her position receiving numerous awards and honors. She retired after more than three decades of dedicated service to the community.

Josephine was well traveled and enjoyed several trips to Europe. Among her favorite destinations were Spain and Portugal as well as Bogota, Colombia, she also traveled many times to Mexico. Josephine also traveled to many locations throughout the United States during her lifetime enjoying the beauty of our country.

Josephine loved life, living it her way with enthusiasm and gusto, making no excuses! She had a candor, goodness and integrity few possess. While she could be a forceful and an imposing presence, she also had a unique playfulness about her. She loved to laugh, sing, dance and appreciated a good joke. Josie made the world a special place just by being in it.

She loved sports and played on several traveling softball teams when she was younger including the Aggieville Boosters. She was an avid fan of the Dallas Mavericks and the Dallas Cowboys, but she was an especially wild K-State fan, trying to never miss a game.

Josephine was very generous to the family and contributed to many charities over the years. Josephine was a favorite in the family, she will be greatly missed, but we will always carry memories of her close to our hearts. In the remaining days of her life, her thoughts were always of home, Manhattan, and of the Family. Now she is finally at home, near her beloved family, content, never to leave again.

She was preceded in death by her parents Frank G. and Elizabeth (Silva) Vera; maternal grandparents, Pedro and Apolonia Silva; paternal grandparents, Gertrudas and Marcellina (Gascas) Vera; sisters, Marcellina (Vera) Zarazua, Ernestine (Vera) Arnett, and Lucia (Vera) Jackson. and life long friend Marjorie Linehan.

Josephine is survived by three brothers, Joseph Vera of Manhattan, Theodore Vera, DVM, of Bogotá, Colombia and Frank Vera, Jr and wife Deborah of Arlington, Texas. Sisters Beatrice Ayon, Virginia Perbeck, Frances and husband Leonard Myers, all of Manhattan; Anna Marie and husband Joseph Yates of Cadiz, Kentucky; Rachel and husband Patrick Nehl of Springfield, Mo., as well as her Aunts Pauline, Carmen and Anita Silva all of Manhattan; several godchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life service for Josephine will be conducted at 7:30 p.m., Friday April 24, at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home with a Rosary and Vigil. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 10:00 a.m., with Father Joseph Popelka as celebrant. Burial will follow at Sunrise Cemetery.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be her nephews.

Donations can be made to a scholarship in her name at St. Joseph Via Christie Health Center in Wichita, Kansas or in her name to Seven Dolors Catholic Church and can be sent in care of the funeral home.

Obituary: Opal Faye Bolton, 76, passed away at Manhattan’s Mercy Health Center Tuesday evening, April 7, 2009, following a prolonged illness. She was born May 3, 1932 in Randolph, KS to Carl Linnie Hedren and Myrtle Minnie Lilley Hedren. This family moved to California when the Tuttle Creek Dam was built. Opal first came to Manhattan where she worked for Farm Bureau Insurance, later to join her parents in California.

A long-time friend of Vaughn Bolton, they were married in Manhattan in 1984, and they accepted positions as co-managers of Garden Grove Apartments in Manhattan, housing for senior citizens and disabled persons. He survives.

Opal leaves two brothers, Carl Hedren of near Harrison, Arkansas and Kenneth Hedren, Marysville, KS. She had one son, Patrick Malloy, who lives at the home; a daughter, Terri, of Manhattan; four daughters live in California, Diana and Dawn Fazzina, Marsha Taylor and Vicki Hodges; two step sons, Tom Bolton, Manhattan and John Bolton, Lenexa, KS; a step daughter, Katie Hartog, Homewood, IL; and 13 grandchildren.

Beloved as Vaughn’s wife, she was loved by residents of Garden Grove. She was also International President of LaSertoma and past president of the Manhattan LaSertoma.

Mrs. Bolton’s wishes were to donate her body to the K.U. Medical Center for medical research. A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 2, 2009 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Rev. Bob Whitaker officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Remembrances in her name can be made to LaSertoma or to the Manhattan Homecare and Hospice and sent in care of the funeral home.

Obituary: Marjorie A. Herbertz, 75, Manhattan, KS passed away Sunday, April 12, 2009 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

She was born February 20, 1934 at Detroit, MI, the daughter of Nelson Riley, Sr. and Virginia Francis Riley. She grew up in Detroit and attended the local schools. She later received a BS Degree in Counseling.

She was united in marriage to Werner C. Herbertz on September 26, 1953 at Detroit. He survives of the home.

Mrs. Herbertz had been a Manhattan resident since the mid 1970’s and spent many years as a psychiatric counselor at Ft. Riley, retiring in 1982.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Herbertz is survived by a son, Jeffrey A. Herbertz, Breckenridge, CO; two brothers, Edward Riley and Nelson G. Riley, Jr., both of Detroit; and one granddaughter, Stephanie Herbertz.

Cremation is planned. There are no memorial services scheduled at this time. Private family inurnment services will be held in the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at Ft. Riley. The Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
