Louis Marshall Smith

Louis Marshall Smith, 82, Manhattan, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at his home.

He was born May 4, 1922 in Warren, Pennsylvania, the son of Louis A. and Jennie Marie (Swanson) Smith. He attended Warren Public Schools, graduating from Warren High School in 1940.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1946, and at the time of discharge held the rank of Master Sergeant.

After serving in the Army he earned his B.S. degree in Business and Accounting from Kansas State University in 1949. He was a life member of the Kansas State University Alumni Association. After graduation, he was employed at Kansas Farm Bureau for 39 years before retirement.

On September 15, 1946, he was united in marriage to Marylois Holm at the First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, KS. She survives of the home.

Also surviving are two sons, Randall L. Smith, his wife Colleen, and their children, Kacy, Kimberly, and Kyle, of Milford, KS., and Rod A. Smith of Topeka, KS. Also surviving is a sister, Anne Rossey of Youngsville, Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Delbert A. Smith, who died in July, 2003.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Manhattan, where he served as a Trustee and Deacon. He enjoyed Boy Scouting and was an Assistant Scout Master for Troop 74 for many years.

Visitation hours will be held on June 17, 7:00 to 8:30 PM, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS.

Services will be held on June 18, 10:00 AM, at the First Presbyterian Church, 8th and Leavenworth, Manhattan, KS, with Reverend R. “Cam” McConnell officiating.

Burial will be in Olsburg Cemetery following services.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be given to the First Presbyterian Church or to the Terry C. Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502

Marvin L. Taylor

Marvin L. Taylor, age 81, of Manhattan, died June 18, 2004 at the Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan.

He was born on September 5, 1922 in Manhattan, the son of Fred and Rose (Klocke) Taylor.

On June 26, 1955 he was married to Marguerite M. Nearnberg. She preceded him in death on September 1, 1969. He was later married to Laverna M. Irwin on October 16, 1982. She preceded him in death on June 19, 2000.

Marvin owned and operated a grocery store in St. George, KS from 1958 - 2001 and was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church.

He is survived by two sons, Gregg A. Taylor and his wife Tammy of Salina, KS and Brian L. Taylor of Kansas City, KS; a grandson, Evan Taylor; a brother, William Taylor and his wife Lorna of Wamego, KS; a sister, Opal Gugliemelli and her husband Lewis of Pekin, IL and two step-daughters, Linda Pettit of Topeka, KS and Penny Riniker of Belvue, KS.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 21, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Dr. Joseph Jones officiating. Interment will follow in the Valley View Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 P.M. Sunday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established for the Terry C. Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research. Memorial contributions may be left care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS 66502.

VAUNETA HALL “VON” SCHLEGEL

Vauneta Hall “Von” Schlegel, age 85, of Manhattan, Kansas, died June 23, 2004, at the Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan.

“Von” was born on March 15, 1919, in Wamego, Kansas the daughter of Irene and James R. Hall.

She attended grade school at Tannerville and Louisville, Kansas, high school at Westmoreland, Kansas and then went to college at Kansas State University.

“Von” was a teacher in the Public Schools of Pottawatomie County, having taught in the Cree, Moodyville and Star Union districts.

During World War II she was a Timekeeper for the Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Corporation and later served her country as a “Spar” in the U.S. Coast Guard, stationed at the Air Base in Coconut Grove, Florida. She was also employed later at he ASCS and for a number of years in Admission Affairs at Kansas State University.

On June 29, 1940, at Holton, Kansas she was married to Jack H. Schlegel, he preceded her in death in 1983.

Survivors include her daughter, Bonnie Sue Schlegel and husband Bob Eckert of Kenniwick, Washington, her son James M. Schlegel and wife Janice of King Salmon, Alaska, a granddaughter, Shana Irish of Tulsa, Oklahoma, three grandsons, Jon M. Carter of Houston, Texas, J. Patrick Carter of Winterville, North Carolina and Shan Schlegel of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, two great-grandsons, Donald Irish of Fairbanks, Alaska and Ryan Carter of Winterville, North Carolina, a great-granddaughter, Miranda Irish of Tulsa, Oklahoma and a sister Regenia Kennedy of Sugarland, Texas.

She also was preceded in death by her infant daughter Mary Sue in 1947, a sister Margaret Josephine Hall and five brothers: Robert Eugene, Kenneth, John , Dwight and Thomas Hall.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Reverend Kevin Larson officiating. Interment will follow in the Congregational Cemetery in Wheaton, Kansas.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 until service time Monday at the funeral home.

A memorial fund has been established to Homecare and Hospice, Inc. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.

Henrietta Esther Perry

Henrietta Esther Perry, age 90, of Manhattan, died June 25, 2004, at Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan.

She was born December 7, 1913, in Blue Springs, Nebraska, the daughter of John F. and Mary Emma (Holderbauer) Finn, Sr.

Henrietta graduated from Manhattan High School in 1931, and then attended secretarial college.

She worked for Capper Publications in Topeka for eight years, and then was the secretary for the President and the Board at Kansas Farm Bureau for 30 years.

Mrs. Perry was a charter and faithful member of the Pilot Club of Manhattan and served on various committees. She was a 42-year member of the Manhattan Business and Professional Women’s Organization and served as President from 1966 to 1967. She also served as chair of several committees and was described as an outstanding member. She was also a member of Harmony Rebekkah Lodge.

Henrietta loved to read, discuss the history of Manhattan and its residents, gardening, was a wonderful cook, and enjoyed spending time with people.

On October 26, 1946, in Manhattan, she was married to Raymond Perry. He preceded her in death on December 22, 1986. She was also preceded in death by two sisters: Doris Fitzgerald and Margaret Stankiewicz; and by two brothers: John G. Finn, Jr. and Robert Finn.

Survivors include three sisters: Phyllis Thomas of Placerville, CA, Mary Lou Pizzanelli of Tucson, AZ, and Genevieve Wertzberger of Manhattan; two brothers: Rex E. Finn of Kansas City, and Richard Finn of Deadwood, SD; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Reverend R. Kent Cormack officiating. Interment will follow in the Wabaunsee Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M. Tuesday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Terry C. Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS 66502.

Clifford LeRoy “Cliff” Barry

Clifford LeRoy “Cliff” Barry, age 76, of Manhattan, died June 27, 2004, at Select Specialty Hospital in Topeka.

He was born December 22, 1927, in Manhattan, the son of Richard “Jack” and Gladys (Grindal) Barry, and had been a lifetime Deep Creek Community resident.

Cliff was a rancher and farmer.

He was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. He had served for many years on the township board and was treasurer for many years.

Cliff was an outdoorsman and enjoyed riding horses to check the cattle on the ranch, and fishing. He was an avid K-State sports fan and attended many KSU Women’s basketball games.

On February 8, 1948, in Manhattan, he was married to Nadine Louise Lee. Mrs. Barry preceded him in death on July 20, 2002. He was also preceded in death by his parents and by one granddaughter, Melinda Barry.

Survivors include three children: Connie Adolph and her husband Curtis of Manhattan, Clinton Barry and his wife Kristin of Elizabeth, CO, and Trudie Lignitz and her husband Robert of Manhattan; five grandchildren: Cade, Chip and Corey Adolph, Richard Barry and Loretta Lignitz; three great grandchildren: Bethany Adolph, Benjamin and Lucas Barry; one brother: Melvin Barry of Manhattan; and one sister: Dorothy Kennedy of Thornton, CO.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Reverend Dr. Joseph A. Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

The family of Mr. Barry will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS 66502.

Edna Bessie Goff

Edna Bessie Goff, age 100, died Monday, June 28, 2004 in the Ptacek House at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community in Manhattan.

She was born on October 22, 1903 in Morganville, KS. She was the daughter of Frederick Samuel and Anna Kurt Schwab. She was united in marriage to Roy Goff on May 21, 1927 in Manhattan, KS. Her loving husband preceded her in death on October 14, 1986. A son, Dwight, also preceded her in death on July 16, 1966. He was killed while serving in the Air Force in Alaska.

Mrs. Goff graduated as an RN in 1926 from Bethany Medical Center in Kansas City, KS. It was then known as Bethany Methodist Hospital. After graduating, Edna worked in Mexico City, MO at the Mexico City County Hospital on floor duty; she also worked in the following hospitals in Manhattan: Charlotte Swift, Parkview, Student Health on the Kansas State University campus and lastly at Wharton Manor as the Head Nurse. Mrs. Goff’s greatest delight in caring for patients was seeing their recovery back to health.

Edna had lived in the Manhattan vicinity except for three years of which she lived with her family in Washington State. She was a member of the Sedalia Community Church.

She is survived by a son, Wendell of Manhattan; a daughter-in-law, Sandra L. Goff-Wright of Moses Lake, WA; four grandchildren, Dennis Goff, Donna L. Metzker, DeeAnna L. Goff all of Moses Lake, WA and Douglas Goff of Couer De’Alene, ID; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; a brother, Philip Schwab of Loveland, CO; and many nieces and nephews.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents, Frederick Samuel in 1936 and Anna Kurt Schwab in 1978; two brothers, Fred in 1969 and Vern in 1962; three sisters, Nellie in 1983, Lily in 1996 and Fannie in 2003. An older sister Amalia, died at the age of 4.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, July 1, 2004 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Rev. Kevin Larson officiating. Interment will follow in the Valley View Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for the Sedalia Community Church. Memorial contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS 66502.

Ann W. Janasik

Ann W. Janasik, age 98, died July 2, 2004, at Clay County Medical Center in Clay Center, Kansas.

She was born October 17, 1905, in Geary County, Kansas, the daughter of Richard and Anna (Clennan) Welsh. She was a Manhattan resident from 1954 to 1988 when she moved to Wakefield.

Mrs. Janasik was a homemaker.

She was married to Kenneth B. Collins, and later divorced. She married Lambert N. Janasik on March 6, 1948. He preceded her in death in 1980.

Survivors include two children: Joe M. Collins of Manhattan and Margie Ann Young of Lawrence; nine grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.

Cremation is planned with graveside services to be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Junction City with Father Lawrence Grennan officiating. Family and friends are invited to meet at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home for a prayer service and to form a procession to the cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Cemetery in Junction City. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS 66502.

Leo Hastings Funk

Leo Hastings Funk, age 98, of Wamego, died Monday morning, July 5, 2004, at the Valley Vista Good Samaritan Home in Wamego.

He was born on March 9, 1906, in Alma, Kansas, the eldest son of Lawrence W. and Julia “Margaret” (Hastings) Funk. His childhood was spent in Alma, Kansas, El Paso, Texas and Gorham, Kansas. He moved with his parents to Manhattan in 1926.

In 1946, Leo became self-employed in a home construction business until he moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1960 where he was employed at David Montham Air Base. In 1967, he volunteered for Vietnam and was at Tan Son Nhut Air Base for 120 days. He returned to Manhattan in 1975, moving to Wamego in 1979.

Mr. Funk was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wamego. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and was a life member and Past Master of Lafayette Lodge # 16 A.F. & A.M. He also was a life member and Past Patron of Manhattan Chapter # 209 Order of Eastern Star and had been a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies and Isis Shrine of Salina.

On May 22, 1930, in Topeka, Kansas, he was united in marriage to the former Rachel Helen Stephens; she survives of the home. Other survivors include three daughters: Mrs. Donna Kleiner and her husband Vaughn of Wamego, Mrs. Wanetta Ellis of Manhattan, and Mrs. Margaret Harries and her husband Jim of Tempe, AZ and one brother: Robert C. Funk of Shreveport, LA. Seven grandchildren: Mrs. Kathleen Hubbard of Chanute, Mrs. Vicky Wendland of Manhattan, Mrs. Deborah Brighton of Olsburg, Mrs. Cynthia Farley of Cleaver, MO, Mrs. Christina Leonard of Overland Park, Michael Ellis of Linwood, and Kerry Kudron of Tempe, AZ. Twelve great-grandchildren, two step-great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two children who died at birth, and by four brothers and one sister.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Sunset Cemetery in Manhattan with Reverend Bill Eisele officiating.

The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. Friday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home with a procession being formed at 10:45 a.m. to go to the cemetery.

Memorials have been designated for the First United Methodist Church of Wamego or for the Masonic Lafayette Lodge #16. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.

Rutha Luella Reavis

Rutha Luella Reavis, age 71, of Manhattan, died Monday, July 5, 2004, at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka, Kansas.

She was born on August 7, 1932, in Gypsum, Kansas, the daughter of Victor and Bessie (Fisher) Van Meter.

Mrs. Reavis was raised in eastern Kansas and had been a Manhattan resident since 1956. She was a homemaker.

On September 6, 1956, in Topeka, Kansas, she was united in marriage to Edwin H. Reavis. He preceded her in death on March 28, 1999. She was also preceded in death by her father, Victor Van Meter.

Following the death of her husband she attended the Manhattan Widowed Persons Progam at the Riley County Senior Service Center.

Mrs. Reavis played the piano and enjoyed attending musical performances of all types.

She is survived by two daughters: Brenda Reavis of Littleton, Colorado and Linda Reavis of Ashland, Kentucky and by two sons: Steven Reavis and his wife Teresa of Central Point, Oregon and David Reavis of Great Bend. Also surviving is her mother: Bessie Van Meter of Topeka, two sisters: Betty Wilson of Torrance, California and Wanda Placer of Kila, Montana and three grandchildren: Brandon and Breanne Reavis of Central Point, Oregon and Melissa Anderson of Natchitoches, Lousiana.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Dwight Craig and Doyle Copeland officiating. Interment will follow in the Westmoreland Cemetery, Westmoreland, Kansas.

A visitation will be held from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

In lieu of plants the family suggests memorials be made to the Topeka Midland Hospice House. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.

Michael Douglas Klingsieck

Michael Douglas Klingsieck, age 48, of Manhattan, died July 4, 2004, at Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan.

He was born August 23, 1955,in Manhattan, and had been a lifetime area resident.

Michael was a carpenter and had worked for Venture Placement Services.

He was baptized and attended Sunday School at First Lutheran Church.

Michael loved the outdoors and enjoyed all outdoor activities.

Survivors include one daughter, Jessica Klingsieck of Wichita; two brothers: Steven P. Klingsieck and John R. Clark both of Manhattan; one sister, Vida Pultz of Manhattan; and his ex-wife, Kathy Klingsieck.

Cremation is planned with memorial services to be held at 3:00 P.M. Thursday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Reverend David Beese officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Terry C. Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS 66502.
