Gerald Hargadine, age 68, of St. George died July 8, 2004 at the Mercy Regional Health Center.
He was born on January 5, 1936 in Kiowa County, KS, the son of Paul and Alice (Schroeder) Hargadine. His mother died when he was an infant and his step-mother, Murrel Nelson adopted him.
On May 27, 1958, he married Delores Ann Austin in Kinsley, KS. She survives of the home. They then moved to St. George while Gerald was attending Kansas State University where he graduated with a Bachelor and Masters degree.
Gerald was a registered professional geologist with the Kansas Department of Transportation and the Kansas Water Office. He was a member of the Blue Valley Memorial United Methodist Church, Geology Advisory Committee, a Heartland Share volunteer and a Boy Scout leader. Gerald loved the outdoors and hiking in Colorado and especially all of his animals.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Susan Lytle and her husband Robert of Topeka, KS; a son, Dirk Hargadine and his wife Vicki of Blue Rapids, KS; four grandchildren, Daniel Lytle, Brett Lytle, Katrina Hargadine and Austin Hargadine and his mother, Murrel Hargadine.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday, July 12, 2004 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Rev. Rob Nore officiating. Interment will follow in the Czech-Moravian Cemetery near Blue Rapids.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home.

FLORENCE “GAYLE” BERTWELL
Florence Gayle (Shehi) Bertwell, age 85, of Manhattan, died Saturday July 10, 2004, at the Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community in Manhattan.
She was born near Fostoria, KS in Pottawatomie County on January 8, 1919, the daughter of George E. and Bertha E. (Sweany) Shehi.
Gayle attended Spring Creek Rural Grade School and graduated from Fostoria High School in 1936. Before she attended Strickler’s Business College in Topeka, she taught for five years in the rural schools of Pottawatomie County. She began working at Kansas State University in 1943 as a secretary in the Department of Architecture and advanced to the Director of the Personnel and Retirement Department. She retired in 1982. Gayle was recognized that same year as the Classified Employee of the Year at Kansas State University.
She was married to Lewis Bertwell and they were the parents of one daughter, Beverly Gayle. They later divorced.
Mrs. Bertwell was a member of The Manhattan Business and Professional Women’s Club for over 50 years, a member of The First Presbyterian Church and Women’s Guild of the church. She was also a member of the Quilt Guild in Manhattan.
She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Bertwell of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; two sisters, Bernice Richter of Shawnee, KS and Elsie Bock of Elmdale, KS; one sister-in-law, Dolores Shehi of Manhattan; many nieces and nephews and her long time special friends, Jan and Jeff Stepp and their two children, Curtis and Logan. They lovingly called her “Grandma Gayle”.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her twin brother Lawrence Dale, two other brothers and three sisters.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday July 14, 2004, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel. Private family intermenty will be in the Spring Creek Cemetery, near Fostoria, KS.

STEVEN JAMES REDMOND
Steven James Redmond, infant son of Jeremy Redmond and Loretta L. Leonard, died July 19, 2004 at the Mercy Regional Health Center.
He is survived by his parents, a sister, Alexis Marie Redmond of Ogden, KS; maternal grandparents, Jim and Susie Bruns of Manhattan, KS; paternal grandparents, Steve and Cindy Redmond of Arpin, WI; great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Redmond, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wojcik, James C. Barnhart II and Phyllis L. Curtis; and uncles, Nick, Matt, Tim and Andy Redmond.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday at the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan with Rev. Jim Lowry officiating.

Patricia J. Barry
Patricia J. Barry, age 40, of Manhattan, died Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at her residence from natural causes.
She was born on November 6, 1963, at Fort Ord, California, the daughter of Archie G. and Patricia M. (Edwards) Kimble. Prior to moving to Manhattan she had lived in California, Germany and Virginia.
Patty was a 1982 graduate of Manhattan High School. She worked for the Riley County Register of Deeds office and then for the Riley County Appraisers office. She then returned to the Register of Deeds office to serve as Deputy. She was also a homemaker.
Patty was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church and the K.S.U. Alumni Association. In addition to her memberships she enjoyed arts and painting, had a love for all animals, and especially enjoyed Halloween. Each year for Halloween she would create a haunted house and dress in costume for the neighborhood children. Most of all Patty enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
On September 22, 1984, in Manhattan, she was united in marriage to James Barry. He survives of the home. Other survivors include one son: Skyler J. Barry, and one daughter: Savannah Ann Barry, both of the home, one brother: Archie G. Kimble, II of Halfway, Missouri and one sister: Victoria Linn Fisher of Seaside, California. She is also survived by her step-father: Jim Woodside of Manhattan who raised Patty since she was nine years old following the death of her father. Her mother preceded her in death in 2002.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Father Keith Weber officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00 P.M. Monday evening at the funeral home.

Helen Louise Ensign McManis
Helen Louise Ensign McManis, age 85, of Manhattan, died Monday morning, July 19, 2004, at her residence.
She was born on December 6, 1918, in Blue Rapids, Kansas, the daughter of Marshall and Carrie Opal (Lowry) Ensign.
Mrs. McManis was a lifetime area resident. She lived in Garrison, Kansas where she was a graduate of Garrison High School in 1936. She then came to Kansas State Agricultural College where she would earn her B.S. degree in Home Economics and Dietetics in 1941, and later would return to earn her Masters degree in Institutional Management in 1972.
On September 19, 1941, she was united in marriage to Alex McManis. They lived in Garrison until 1957 when the construction of Tuttle Creek Dam caused them to move to Manhattan. Mr. McManis preceded her in death on June 3, 1966. She was also preceded in death by one son: Larry A. McManis in 1978 and by one sister: Delpha Ensign in 2002.
Mrs. McManis was a homemaker. Following the death of her husband in 1966 she went to work at Kansas State University for the Department of Housing and Food Service. She was a registered licensed dietitian and was a leader in the legislative process for credentialing of dietitians in the state of Kansas. At Kansas State she had worked as Director of the Derby Food Center and later became the Assistant Director of Housing and Dining Services. She retired in 1989.
Mrs. McManis was quite active professionally and in the community. Her memberships included the Blue Valley Memorial United Methodist Church, Kansas Dietetic Association of which she was a past president, the American Dietetic Association and the Kaw Valley Dietetic Association of which she was a past president. Other memberships include the American Association of University Women, League of Women Voters, Manhattan Preservation Alliance, Riley County Republicans, Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel, Manhattan Area Retired Educators Association, and Home Economist in Home and Community. She was recognized as a Riley County Republican of the Year, and in 1985 was named Distinguished Dietitian of the Year.
In addition to her numerous memberships she enjoyed playing bridge and was an avid K-State fan especially in basketball. She held season tickets at Ahearn Fieldhouse since it opened in 1950, and continued as a season ticket holder at Bramlage Colliseum. Mrs. McManis took great pride in living in one of Manhattan’s earliest residences. The McManis home, which is located on Houston Street, was built around 1897 and is listed on the historical registry.
She is survived by one daughter: Mary Stamey and her husband Bob of Manhattan, and by one son: Jon McManis and his wife Brenda of Plano, Texas. Also surviving is one sister: Gwen Proctor and her husband William of Lithia Springs, Georgia, four grandchildren: Robert A. McManis, John M. Stamey, Benjamin T. Stamey, and Matthew L. Stamey and by nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Blue Valley Memorial United Methodist Church, 835 Church Avenue, Manhattan with Reverend Norm Simmons officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

Alberta M. Repp
Alberta M. Repp, age 86, of Manhattan, died Thursday evening, August 7, 2003, at her residence following an extended illness.
She was born on June 13, 1917, in Wamego, Kansas, the daughter of Albert and Bessie Marie (Harris) Pierson, and was a 1935 graduate of Wamego High School.
Alberta was a lifetime area resident where she was a homemaker and member of the First United Methodist Church in Manhattan.
On February 14, 1938, in Manhattan, she was united in marriage to Edward F. Repp. This year they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. He survives of the home. Other survivors include three daughters: Connie Jo Peterson and her husband Roger of Amador City, California, Marcia Englisby of Richmond, Virginia and Nancy Gorman and her husband Tim of Manhattan. One brother: John Pierson of Cheyenne, Wyoming, nine grandchildren: Brian Edward Duby, Amy Lynette Duby, Kristi Michelle Drake, Kelly Lee Andrew, Mark Edward Englisby, Todd Peterson, Christina Dale, Chad Peterson, Tony Peterson and five great-grandchildren: Kai Edward Duby, Perrie Sheffield, Chance Thomas Drake, Cole Edward Drake and Camron George Drake.
Alberta was preceded in death by three sisters: Ethel Johnson, Betty May and Mabel Pierson and by four brothers: George Walter Pierson, Raymond Pierson, Arthur Pierson and Marion Dale Pierson.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Reverend Jim Reed officiating. Interment will follow in the Valley View Memorial Gardens Cemetery east of Manhattan.
Friends may call anytime beginning on Monday at the funeral home. A visitation will be held from 1:00 P.M. Wednesday until service time at the funeral home.

Ivan Ray Hunt
Ivan Ray Hunt, age 82 of Manhattan, died July 17, 2004 at the Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan.
He was born on September 5, 1921 in Driftwood, OK, the son of Charles Webster and Cora May (Hunnicutt) Hunt.
He grew up in Oklahoma and graduated from Tryon High School.
On June 19, 1944 he was married to Gloria Mary Bragga in San Rafael, CA. She survives of the home. They were married for 60 years and lived in Sausalito, CA until they moved to Manhattan in November of 1996.
Ivan was a heavy equipment operator for the city of Sausalito. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and was a member of the Knights of Phythias and the Columbia Friends Church in Tryon, OK.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two brothers, Emery Hunt of Wichita, KS and Charles Hunt and his wife Dixie of Independence, MO; two sisters, his twin sister Iva May Larson of Manhattan, KS and Mary Ellen Cook and her husband Paul of Craig, CO and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Moore and her husband C.L.; a sister-in-law, Helen Hunt and a brother-in-law, Oscar Ruben Larson, Jr.
Cremation is planned with a private family service.

Dr. Milton L. Manuel
Dr. Milton L. Manuel, Ph.d., age 85, of Manhattan, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at the Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan. He had fought with dignity and optimism a courageous battle with cancer for the past 17 years.
He was born on March 20, 1919, to Harley and Stella (Kroth) Manuel near Holton, Kansas. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1941 with a degree in Agricultural Economics.
Dr. Manuel served in the U.S. Army and took part in the Omaha Beach Invasion in France in 1944. He was wounded in that endeavor and was medically discharged as a Captain in 1945.
He received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1952 and taught at Kansas State University for many years in the Department of Agricultural Economics. Dr. Manuel was Chairman of the Department of Economics for seven years prior to his retirement in 1985.
On May 26, 1941, in Manhattan, Kansas he was united in marriage to the former Alice Grandfield. They enjoyed over 58 years of marriage until her death in February of 1999. He was also preceded in death by a daughter: Onita Faye Manuel in 1943 and by a sister: Isla (Manuel) Herbert.
Dr. Manuel is survived by three children: Maureen (Manuel) Hemphill and her husband Andy of Kansas City, MO, COL (Ret) Kent L. Manuel and his wife Bonnie of Manhattan, and Mona (Manuel) Culver and her husband Jim of Congress, AZ. Also surviving are two sisters: Nola (Manuel) Boggio of Kansas City, KS, Floye (Manuel) Knouft of Holton, KS, 9 grandchildren: Drew Hemphill and his wife Pam, Deena (Hemphill) Edwards and her husband Kevin, Matthew Hemphill and his wife Holly all of Kansas City, MO; Melanie and Phillip Manuel of Manhattan, Janice Manuel of St. Louis, MO, and Barry, Kacey and Warren Culver of Congress, AZ. Five great-grandchildren: Zach Simmons, Walker, Madeleine, and Will Hemphill, and Tanner Edwards all of Kansas City, MO.
Dr. Manuel was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Manhattan. He was a deeply spiritual and philosophical man, compassionate and gentle,a loving husband, wonderful father and friend to the many lives he touched.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, July 19th, at the Manhattan First United Methodist Church with Reverend Jim Reed officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Sunset Cemetery.
The family will greet friends during a visitation from 12:30 until 1:30 P.M. at the church and at a reception in Fellowship Hall of the church following the interment.

Ralph E. Hawkins
Ralph E. Hawkins, age 78, of Manhattan, Kansas, died Monday, July 12, 2004, at the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver.
He was born on February 23, 1926, in Burchard, Nebraska, the son of Ernest and Lena E. (Peacock) Hawkins. Following his graduation from Summerfield High School in May of 1944, he joined the Navy. Most of his Naval service took place in the South Pacific Arena.
Following the war, he was united in marriage to Betty L. Malone on July 13, 1946. Over the years, he and Betty made their home in Nebraska, Colorado and finally returning to Kansas in 1984.
Mr. Hawkins was employed by the Paul Henderson Motor Company in Beatrice, Nebraska, prior to managing his own automatic transmission businesses. He retired in 1987, in Manhattan.
Mr. Hawkins was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and was a life member of the American Legion Post 17, both of Manhattan. He enjoyed playing golf, hunting, and fishing.
Survivors include two children: Mike Hawkins and his wife Donna of Manhattan, and Kathy Carmel and her husband Adam of Aurora, Colorado. Two sisters: Darlene Manning of Grand Junction, Colorado, Bernice Aden of Bella Vista, Arkansas, and four grandchildren: Laura and Alexander Carmel, of Aurora, Colorado, and Bryan and Kenton Howell, of Manhattan.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, on March 21, 2004, as well as by his parents, and his brother, Bernard.
Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Reverend Moon-Hee Chung officiating. Graveside services with military honors will be held 1:00 P.M. Saturday at the Burchard Cemetery in Burchard, Nebraska.

Francis Charles William
Francis Charles William, age 83, of St. George, died July 25, 2004, at Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan.
He was born March 19, 1921, in Portis, Kansas, the son of George Walter and Sadie Pauline (Scott) William, and had been a St. George resident since 1930.
Francis had owned Golden Rule Creamery with his wife Dorothy, had been a milk-man for John’s Creamery, and then retired from Kansas State University in the mail department.
He was very active in and was a Charter Member of the Black Jack American Legion Post 260 in St. George, and was very active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1786 in Manhattan.
Francis loved to bowl and was the secretary of the Wednesday Evening Fraternal League for many years, and also bowled in the Sunday Evening Mixed League.
In December 1946, he was married to the former Dorothy A. Zigler. She preceded him in death on March 17, 1998. He was also preceded in death by four brothers: Edgar, Ray, Gerald and Willard.
Survivors include four children: Mary Grunz and her husband Allen of St. George, Judy Duncan and her husband Don of Auburn, Maine, Donald William and his wife Jenni of Austin, TX, and Dale William and his wife Ileen of St. Pete, FL; eight brothers and sisters: Pauline Dinger of Oskaloosa, KS, Lena Harms of Seattle, WA, Warren William of Ft. Collins, CO, Grace Prescott of Boise, Idaho, Roger William of St. George, Betty Mallon of Manhattan, Rose Mathieu of Burlington, VT, and Lois Gerry of Topeka; seven grandchildren: Leona, Crystal, Kelly, Casey, Kendra, Jeremy and Randi Sue; and four great grandchildren: Storm, KirstAnna, Caden and Kyra.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Reverend David Beese officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in Valley View Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Sadie Marie Troyer, daughter of Daniel Mark and Sara Elizabeth (Swihart) Troyer, was stillborn on July 24, 2004, at Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan.
Survivors include her parents of the home; grandparents: Judd and Nancy Swihart of Manhattan, and Ron and Loraine Troyer of Middlebury, Indiana; and great grandparents: Noble Swihart of Manhattan, Dolores Troyer of Middlebury, Indiana, and Jean Bail of Goshen, Indiana.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday at Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan with Pastor Bob Flack officiating.
