Mary Ellen Striler
Mary Ellen Striler, age 75, of Ogden, Kansas, died Wednesday morning, July 12, 2006, at the Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan.
She was born on October 1, 1930, in Flat River, Missouri the daughter of Richard R. and Elsie (Stroup) Johnson. Mary was raised in Flat River and she attended school at the Pleasant Grove School near Flat River.
She was united in marriage to Carl J. Striler on April 14, 1956, in Verona, Mississippi. Being a military family they lived in numerous communities prior to making their home in Ogden beginning in 1965. Mr. Striler preceded her in death on April 17, 1989. She was also preceded in death by her parents and by one brother: Richard R. Johnson.
Mrs. Striler was a homemaker. She was a member of the Ogden Baptist Church, the American Legion Post 207, 40 et 8 and the 60 + Club. In addition to her memberships she enjoyed crocheting, fishing and camping and especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
She is survived by two sons: Joseph R. “Joe” Striler, of the home, James H. “Jim” Hasty and his wife Sylvia of Springfield, MO and two daughters: Seva A. Clark and her husband Howard and Raymonda “Faye” Arp and her husband Jim all of Ogden. Also surviving are two sisters: Janet Gowen of De Soto, MO, Shirley Conway of Farmington, MO and a brother: Kenneth Johnson of Piedmont, MO. Seven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Sunday evening at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 17, 2006, at the Ogden Baptist Church with Reverend Will Griswold officiating. Interment will follow in the Ogden City Cemetery.

Alice Louise Allen
Alice Louise Allen, age 83, of Manhattan, died Thursday, July 27, 2006, in Collins Landing at the Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community.
She was born on April 9, 1923 in St. Louis, MO, the daughter of Dirk and Hazel (Sloan) Verhuel. After high school she attended Little Miss Muffitt School of Seamstress and Design.
On October 2, 1948 in St. Louis, MO, she was united in marriage to William “Bill” Allen. He survives of the home.
Alice was a bookkeeper and an accountant for the Missouri Pacific Railroad and A.S. Aloe Brothers. She was a gifted writer, published author and artist with over 50 pictures in charcoal of men and women in the Bible. She taught Bible School and was a member of Lutheran Women’s layman League and Toastmistress with Trinity Lutheran Church in Mission, KS. Alice was presently a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Manhattan. She helped Bill in real estate for over 52 years.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Jane Louise Dickerson of Prairie Village, KS and Marianne Dubois of Manhattan, KS; one son, James Michael Allen and his wife Nancy of Lenexa, KS; two sisters, Sadie Hudson and her husband Charles of Carriere, MS and Margaret Ann Cuccio, her husband Raymond and family of New Orleans, LA; three grandsons, Joshua H. Dubois, Nicholas A. Dubois and Charlie H. Allen and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Mark X. Allen and a son-in-law, Jim Dubois.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, July 31, 2006 at the Peace Lutheran Church with Rev. Michael Ide officiating. Interment will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday at the Burlingame Cemetery in Burlingame, KS.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M. Sunday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.
Margaret Ester “Marge” Sanner
Margaret Ester “Marge” Sanner, 84, of Manhattan died August 1, 2006 at the Stoneybrook Retirement Community, Manhattan, Kansas.
Margaret was born on October 15, 1921 in Barlow, Kentucky, the daughter of Edwin Ansil and Lula (Kimball) Whalin. She married Albert Edward Sanner on March 7, 1942 in Canton, Illinois. He preceded her in death on March 20, 2001.
She is survived by her three children: Ann Marie Sanner of Manhattan, Michael Lee Sanner and his wife Shelley Gile of Edwards, Colorado, and Patricia Jo Asmussen and her husband, Craig of Greeley, Colorado; three grandchildren, Heather Asmussen, Holly Asmussen, and Sean Asmussen, all of Greeley, Colorado. She is also survived by her brother, Edwin A. Whalin, Jr. and his wife, Gay of Charleston, Illinois, and their children, Kathleen Whalin and her husband Robert Morss of Sanford, Maine, Brian Whalin and his wife Elaine of Stockport, Ohio, and Jennifer Whalin of Newton, Illinois, and by six great nieces and two great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother who died shortly after birth, and by a niece, Phyllis Whalin Hirchert.
She graduated from high school in Canton, Illinois in 1938. Margaret received a degree in accounting from the University of Illinois in 1941 and then started law school at the University of Illinois. She worked as a bookkeeper for Newman Brothers Clothiers in Canton from 1943 to 1946 while her husband was overseas in the Army Air Corps. Margaret did all of the accounting work connected with their family farms until her health deteriorated. For many years she also served as an election judge in Manhattan.
She was devoted to her family and enjoyed visiting with them. She liked to travel and for many years Margaret and her husband, a professor of architecture at Kansas State University, went on summer tours with an architecture group from the University of Kansas to European countries. She was an avid bridge player and also a sports fan watching the teams from Kansas State and the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs. She was a supporter of the arts and many environmental groups. She was an active member of the AAUW and the First Congregational United Church of Christ women’s group. Although she was a member to the First United Methodist Church, for more than the last three decades of her life, she was active in the First Congregational United Church of Christ.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday August 8, 2006 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Manhattan, with Rev. R. Kent Cormack officiating. Cremation is planned following the funeral services with inurnment to be held at a later date in Illinois.
The family of Margaret Sanner will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 P.M. on Monday, August 7, 2006 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Manhattan or to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.
Lawrence E. “Larry” Scott
Lawrence E. “Larry” Scott, former Manhattan resident, died at his residence in Kansas City North after a brief illness, at the age of 45.
Larry was born on June 10, 1961, in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, the son of Charlotte Scott Kelly and the late Dr. Robert E. Scott of Manhattan.
He attended grade schools in Pittsburg, Kansas and Manhattan, Kansas, and graduated from Manhattan High School in 1979. He attended Kansas State University and graduated from the Area Vocational Technical School in 1984. Larry loved sports. He lettered in wrestling at Manhattan High School and enjoyed playing golf in his adult years. Larry was a financial computer programmer in the Kansas City area.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Robert E. Scott.
Larry is survived by his mother, Charlotte Scott Kelly, and his step father Ch (MajGen) Orris E. Kelly USA ret, of Manhattan, Kansas, a sister: Janice Scott Horn and her husband Jeff of Lincoln, Nebraska; a brother: Paul Robert Scott and his wife Sharon of Highland Village, Texas; and by his nephews and nieces, Matthew Horn, Rebekah Horn, Sierra Scott, and Hunter Scott.
Private burial services will be held at a later date in the Sunrise Cemetery.

Randall “Randy” A. Higgins
Randall “Randy” A. Higgins, 51, of Manhattan, KS, died Friday, May 12, 2006.
He was born on June 2, 1954, in Greencastle, IN, the son of Robert M. & Gloria (English) Higgins. Randy graduated from Danville High School (IN) in 1972, and earned his B.S. from Purdue University, and his M.S. and two Ph.D.s from Iowa State University. On June 28, 1975, he was united in marriage to Mary L. Meck. This union was blessed with four children: Stephanie, Keith, Ben and Michelle. The family moved to Manhattan, KS, in 1982.
Randy loved to fish, hunt, camp, garden, and farm. He loved teaching his children about the outdoors and the earth. Spending time with his family was very important to Randy. He also loved to cook for his family: barbequing, frying fish and baking brownies.
Randy was a professor of Entomology at Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS. He was a teacher, researcher, and K-State Research and Extension Specialist. Randy guided 16 students to graduate degree completion. He authored and delivered hundreds of public and professional education publications and presentations. He was a governing board member of the Entomological Society of America and received numerous awards for his professional service.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, of the home; two sons: Keith Higgins of Dana Point CA, and Ben Higgins of Manhattan KS; two daughters: Stephanie (Higgins) Springer and her husband Adam of Manhattan KS, and Michelle Higgins of Manhattan KS; his parents: Robert and Gloria Higgins of Danville, IN; two brothers: Kevin Higgins and his wife Denise of Plainfield IN and Gary Higgins and his wife Sunny of Huntington Beach, CA; one sister: Debbie (Higgins) Dillon and her husband Dan of Danville, IN; and many other relatives and friends.
Hermann J. Donnert
Hermann J. Donnert, age 77, of Manhattan, died Sunday afternoon, November 5, 2006, at the St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.
He was born on January 20, 1929, in Lienz, Austria, the son of Hermann and Gertrud B. (Bocek) Donnert. He graduated class valedictorian in 1947 from secondary-school and received a doctorate in mathematics and theoretical physics from the University of Innsbruck, Austria, summa cum laude in 1951 at the age of 22 (the youngest recipient in more than 50 years).
Dr. Donnert became a secondary-school teacher and then a postdoctoral research fellow in Austria and Germany. In 1957, the United States Department of Defense recruited him to immigrate to America where he worked 10 years for Pentagon officials on the development and testing of nuclear weapons and radiological systems. In 1966, he came to Manhattan and to Kansas State University where he joined the nuclear engineering department and continued to teach today’s leading nuclear engineers over the next 31 years. Dr. Donnert was affectionately known by students and staff as “Mr. Purple Pride”, always wearing purple and supporting Kansas State. During this time he also spent several summers (1976-1979) as a Visiting Staff Member at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. He was also part of the Star Wars missile defense program while working part-time as a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1984-85. He was awarded the Emeritus Life Member Award in April 1997, and retired in May 1997.
Dr. Donnert was awarded the Honorary Golden Ph.D. degree in 2001 from his alma mater, the University in Innsbruck, Austria. His activities in the American Nuclear Society included Chairman of the Student Activities Committee, Vice-Chair and Chair of the Scholarship Coordination Committee, and President of Alpha Nu Sigma. He was also an Honorary Life-Time Member of the American Nuclear Society, Distinguished Faculty Member of Alpha Nu Sigma, Life-Time Emeritus Member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society. Locally he was an active member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church and was active with Boy Scouts of America. In 1997, he was honored as a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award through the Coronado Area Council of Boy Scouts.
On September 5, 1954, in Innsbruck, Austria, he was united in marriage to the former Margarete Karner. She survives of the home. Also surviving are three sons: Herf Donnert and his wife Sally of Longview, Texas, Dan Donnert and his wife Denise of Manhattan and David Donnert and his wife Scarlett also of Manhattan. One brother: Diedfried Donnert of Germany, five grandchildren: Nicole Coleman and her husband Ben of Manhattan, Natalie Donnert of Lake Charles, LA, and Ashley, Taylor and Ryan Donnert all of Manhattan. He is also survived by one great granddaughter: Haven Coleman.
Dr. Donnert was preceded in death by his parents.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 2:30 p.m. Friday, November 10, 2006, at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Manhattan with Father Don Zimmerman as celebrant. Cremation will follow with private inurnment at a later date in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery near Manhattan.
Visitation will be Friday from 1:30 until service time at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

Gwendolyn “Gwen” Laverne Tinklin
Gwendolyn “Gwen” Laverne Tinklin, age 96 of Manhattan, died Monday, November 6, 2006 in the Lyle House at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community.
She was born on May 8, 1910 in Corning, KS, the daughter of C.E. and Effie Ann (Sanders) Tinklin. She grew up in Atchison, KS and graduated from Atchison High School and Mt. St. Scholastica and then Kansas State University where she earned her B.S. and M.S. degrees. She also did post graduate studies at Iowa State University and the University of Wisconsin.
Gwen came back to Manhattan in 1942 as a graduate assistant in Food and Nutrition and went on to become a full professor in 1963, retiring in 1975.
She was a life member of American Home Economics Association (AHEA), American Association of University Women (AAUW), Manhattan Area Retired Teachers (MARTA) and KSU President Club. She was active in Gamma Sigma Delta, Sigma XI, and Omicron Nu. Her other memberships include First Christian Church Disciple of Christ, Disciple Women, Riley County Historical Society and KSU Alumni.
Gwen is survived by many cousins as well as a host of friends, both young and old.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, George.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 14, 2006 at the Meadowlark Hills Community Room with Rev. Neil Engle officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Sunrise Cemetery.
Mrs. Tinklin donated her body to the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Merlin E. Schultes
Merlin E. Schultes passed away on Tuesday November 7, 2006 at the St. Joseph Village, Manhattan, Kansas at the age of 87 years.
He was born on May 11, 1919 in Randolph, Kansas the son of Edward and Ida (Sand) Schultes. Merlin grew up in the Randolph-Garrison area and attended the Randolph schools.
On June 14, 1947 he was united in marriage to Doris A. Stitt. This union was blessed with two daughters: Cheryl and Marlene. Merlin farmed until 1959, he then worked at the Farmers Union Co-op until his retirement in 1981. He loved spending time with his family, gardening and doing yard work.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Virgie Cook, Josephine Turney and Dorothy Johnson; and a brother Lyman Schultes.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years Doris of Manhattan, KS; two daughters: Cheryl Goff of Emporia, Kansas and Marlene Hendershot of Hereford, Texas; 3 brothers: Milo “Mike” Schultes and Raymond Schultes both of Topeka, Kansas and Leon Schultes of Randolph, Kansas; 8 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday November 11, 2006 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Pastor Robert M. Flack officiating. A private family burial will be in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan, Kansas at a later date.
Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. until service time on Saturday at the Funeral Home.

Alton Tabb
Alton Tabb, (CSM Ret.), age 74, of St. George, KS, died Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at the Colmery-O’Nell Medical Center (VA Hospital), Topeka.
He was born on June 24, 1932 in Damascus, GA, the son of Henry Ivy and Lela Mae (Williamson) Tabb. Receiving parental approval, he enlisted in the U.S. Army in September of 1949 at the age of seventeen. After completing thirty years of military service and attaining the rank of Command Sergeant Major, he retired in 1979. Overseas tours of duty included Germany, Korea, and Vietnam. Following his military retirement, he attended Manhattan (KS) Vo-Tech and received a Certificate for Heating and Cooling in the Spring of 1980. He then worked approximately twenty years for various maintenance contractors at Fort Riley, KS. Following his retirement from Ft. Riley, he worked part-time for McCullough Development, as a maintenance contractor, until January of 2006.
On December 10, 1954 in Damascus, GA, he was united in marriage to Viola Ellen Simmons and spent 50 happy years together until she preceded him in death in September of 2005.
He is survived by three sons, Steven A. Tabb and his wife Wanda of Westmoreland, KS, Henry “Eddie” Tabb of St. George, KS and Terry A. Tabb of Westmoreland, KS; two granddaughters, Samantha Tabb of Westmoreland, KS and Tabitha Tabb of Wamego, KS; one great-granddaughter, Brooke of Wamego, KS; one brother, Henry Alvin Tabb, of Colquitt, Georgia.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Avis Maureen (Tabb) Love and Ava Mae Tabb.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, November 12, 2006 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.
Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 13, 2006 at the Fort Riley Cemetery in Fort Riley, KS. The funeral procession will leave Yorgenson-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home at 9:30 a.m.

Glenn B. Moe
Glenn B. Moe, age 87, a longtime Manhattan resident, died November 8, 2006, at the Logan County Hospital in Oakley, Kansas.
He was born May 17, 1919, in Carbondale, Ohio. Glenn was adopted by Albert Lester and Grace Elizabeth (Floreth) Moe.
Glenn grew up in New Port Richey, Florida, graduated from Gulf Stream High School in 1937, and had been a Manhattan resident since 1950.
He worked for Federal Civil Service at Fort Riley as the Chief Supply Officer for Post Field Maintenance for 28 years, retiring in 1978.
Glenn was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Sertoma. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and remodeling his home.
On July 14, 1940, in Kinsley, Kansas, he married the former Hazel Eleanor Schober. Mrs. Moe preceded him in death on March 28, 2005. He was also preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Glenna Eleanor Moore; and by one grandson, Franklin Glenn Moore.
Survivors include one daughter, Sandra Sue Hill of Rexford, KS; two grandsons: Tony Moore and Frank Alan Hill; and three great-grandchildren: Kenneth Lee Hill, John Robert Hill and Jessica Eleanor Moore.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, November 13, 2006, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home with Reverend Jim Reed officiating. A private family inurnment will be in the Centralia Cemetery.

Kathryn M. Washington
Kathryn M. Washington, age 100, of Manhattan, died November 9, 2006, at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community.
She was born June 1, 1906, in Smith Mills, Kentucky, the daughter of William and Margaret (Kellen) Crowder, and moved to Manhattan in 1918.
Mrs. Washington graduated from Manhattan High School in 1924, and then from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri.
She taught piano for several years prior to her marriage to Vance Washington on November 16, 1930, in Wamego, Kansas. Kathryn and Vance then farmed and ranched with Vance’s family on his family’s homestead.
Mrs. Washington was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Manhattan Supper Club, Manhattan Book Club, and the GU chapter of P.E.O. She loved cooking and entertaining and especially spending time with her family.
Mr. Washington preceded her in death in 1962. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Louise Hyer and her husband Joe; and by one son-in-law, Larry Parker.
Survivors include one son, Bill Washington and his wife Sharron of Manhattan; two daughters, Sue Parker of Shawnee, KS, and Mary Lowman and her husband Frank of Topeka; five grandchildren: Bill Lowman and his wife Susan, Steven Lowman, Tom Lowman and his wife Audra, Jennie Stout and her husband Ben, and Sarah Cortner and her husband Matt; and eight great-grandchildren.
Cremation is planned with memorial services to be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday in the Community Room at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community with Reverend R. Cam McConnell officiating. Private family inurnment will be in Sunset Cemetery.

James E. “Jim” Hoover
James E. “Jim” Hoover, 82 passed away on Saturday November 11, 2006 at the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan, Kansas.
He was born on September 12, 1924 in Winfield, Kansas the son of Thomas and Elsie M. (Garriott) Hoover. After graduating from high school, James served in the Army Air Forces in the South Pacific during World War II from 1943 – 1946. He then worked as a plumber and pipefitter until he retired in 1986. He was a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union #441, life member and past commander of VFW Post #3544 in Winfield, Kansas, and Senior Services Center, Manhattan, Kansas. His love of gardening kept him busy until he became afflicted with cancer.
He was united in marriage to Jean Lindly on November 30, 1946. They were blessed with 58 years of marriage. She preceded him in death on January 16, 2005.
Survivors include one son: David and his wife LuAnn of Manhattan, Kansas; two daughters: Nancy Almstrom and her husband Larry of Lawrence, Kansas and Barbara Gless and her husband Mike of Norman, Oklahoma; and 6 grandchildren: Ryan Almstrom, Sarah Downs, Kirk Gless, Jennifer Davis, Grant Hoover and Barkley Hoover; 5 great-grandchildren: Tyce, Tate and Trey Hoover, Jaxon Gless and Brady Davis.
Graveside Services with Military Honors will be held at 1:30 P.M. Tuesday November 14, at the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan, Kansas with Rev. Ben Duerfeldt officiating. Family and friends will be gathering at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home at 1:00 P.M. to form a procession to the cemetery.
There will be no public visitation.
