Jack E. Clanton

Jack E. Clanton, 62, of Manhattan died Sunday, September 28, 2003 at Mercy Regional Health Center following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born September 11, 1941 in Neodesha KS to William and Winnie (Miller) Clanton and attended schools in Neodesha.

During high school Jack lettered in every sport, and was named high school all american. Jack graduated from Washburn University in 1967 where he lettered in football and track. He was inducted into the Washburn University Hall of Fame in 1984 and was recently honored at Washburn University's Walk of Fame as a player and coach. After college, he was briefly a Free Agent with the Denver Broncos.

Jack married Phyllis Anderson on January 6, 1964 in Manhattan. She survives of the home. Other survivors include daughters Connie Clanton of Phoenix AZ; Kim Clanton of Chandler AZ, Christy Clanton Albin and her husband Curt of Keller TX and son Curt Clanton and wife Page Coleman Clanton of Olathe KS. Surviving grandchildren are Cory, Nicole, Marcus and Kevyn of Phoenix AZ; Kala Jo and Derrick of Chandler AZ; Nick, Dru and Nate of Keller TX and Coleman and McKinlay of Olathe KS. A brother William Dean Clanton and sister Sandy Kingston both of Neodesha KS also survive as well as several nieces and nephews and a wealth of friends.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, Jack E Clanton II in January 1969 and also by his parents.

Jack was CEO of the Insurance Education Foundation of Indianapolis IN until September 2003. He retired from the Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company in January 2001 as Vice-President and General Manager after 28 years of service. Other service affiliations include: Past-Chairman of the Board of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, National Association of Independent Insurers, Farm Bureau Multi-Line Pool Committee, Farm Bureau Advisory Council, Crop Insurance Research Bureau, National Crop Insurance Association and various other insurance related organizations.

He began his insurance career as a per diem Crop-Hail Adjuster in the summers while coaching and teaching at St. George High School. For the past three years, he also had been an Assistant Football Coach at Rock Creek High School. Other affiliations and memberships include: Westview Community Church, First Christian Church, Gideon's International, Manhattan Country Club, Washburn University Alumni Board of Directors, Kappa Sigma Alumni Association. He was instrumental in starting the Northeast Kansas Officials Association.

Visitation will be 6-7:30 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. A Homecoming Celebration commemorating Jack's life will be held at 2 PM on Thursday at the Westview Community Church in Manhattan. Private family burial services will be Friday at 12 Noon at the Grandview Cemetery in Neodesha KS.

Memorial contributions may be made to any of the following: American Cancer Society, Gideon's International, Insurance Education Foundation, Rock Creek High School Football, Washburn University Athletics, Westview Community Church and should be sent in care of Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home who is handling the arrangements.

Terry K. Bokelman

Terry K. Bokelman, age 66, of Manhattan, died Monday afternoon, November 13, 2006, at the Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on April 18, 1940, in Steele City, Nebraska, the son of Gus and Gertrude (Oestriech) Bokelman. Mr. Bokelman was raised in the Linn and Greenleaf communities in Washington County, Kansas and was a 1958 graduate of Greenleaf High School. He attended Kansas State University where he earned his Bachelors degree in December of 1971.

Mr. Bokelman was a longtime Manhattan resident and was a Construction Field Supervisor for the State of Kansas.

He was a member of the Olsburg Lutheran Church in Olsburg, Kansas. Mr. Bokelman was an avid collector and gifted potter and artist. He appreciated art and architecture especially sculpture. He also enjoyed sports of all types, reading and spending time with family and friends.

On April 17, 1982, in the Olsburg Lutheran Church, he was united in marriage to R.J. Larson. She survives of their home. Also surviving are two daughters: Leslie Smith and her husband Mick and Michelle Welliver and her husband Jay, one son: Jonathan Bokelman and two grandchildren: Zane Smith and Kelsey Welliver, all of Manhattan. One brother: Del Bokelman of Doylestown, Pennsylvania also survives.

Mr. Bokelman was preceded in death by his parents.

A Celebration of Life gathering will be held from 2:00 until 4:30 p.m. Sunday, November 19, 2006, in the Legends Room at Bramlage Coliseum, Kansas State University.

Lester L. Hirsch

Lester L. Hirsch, age 81, of Wamego, Kansas, died Thursday evening, November 16, 2006, at the Valley Vista Good Samaritan Home in Wamego. He moved to Wamego from Manhattan in 1972.

He was born on February 7, 1925, in rural Geary County, Kansas, the son of Lee and Verne (Townsend) Hirsch.

Mr. Hirsch was a lifetime area resident and was raised in the McDowell Creek area where he attended Briggs School. He attended one year of high school in Canton, Kansas prior to transferring to the Olsburg High School where he was a 1943 graduate.

During World War II, Mr. Hirsch served with the United States Army as a motor vehicle dispatcher. His military decorations included the Army of Occupation Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on November 4, 1946 at the rank of Sergeant.

Mr. Hirsch was employed as manager of the service department for Brewers Service Station for nine years. He went to work for the Kansas Farm Bureau in 1957, he retired in 1987 as a Senior Underwriter.

Mr. Hirsch was a member of the Black Jack American Legion Post # 260 at St. George, Kansas.

On April 15, 1949, in Manhattan, Kansas, he was united in marriage to the former Lorraine F. Nordgren. She survives of the home. Also surviving are two sons: Dr. Dale D. Hirsch, M.D. and his wife Dr. Ann M. Hirsch of West Linn, Oregon, and Ronald R. Hirsch and his fiancé Melinda Catlett of Marina Del Rae, California. Three grandchildren: Lauren Hirsch, Lindsay Hirsch and Aaron Robbins also survive.

Mr. Hirsch was preceded in death by his parents, by four brothers: Irvin, George, Otis and Earl Hirsch and by two sisters: Mildred O’Neill and Marjorie Cour.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 22, 2006, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Chaplain Frank Werder officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Sunset Cemetery.

A visitation will be held from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M. Tuesday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

Franklin Lee “Pete” Peterson

Franklin Lee “Pete” Peterson, age 71, of Manhattan, died November 28, 2006, at his residence.

He was born May 31, 1935, in San Antonio, Texas, the son of Joseph Franklin “Tex” and Dorothy Beatrice (Brooks) Peterson.

Mr. Peterson served in the United States Army from 1953 until his retirement at the rank of Sergeant First Class on July 31, 1975 at Fort Riley. He had received the Purple Heart Award, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star and 2 Silver Stars, the Republic Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Army Commendation Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster. Following his military retirement he worked for Riley County Public Works for the Roads and Bridge Division.

Frank was a member of the First Assembly of God Church, Disabled American Veterans, and the American Legion.

He volunteered as a driver for the Veterans Administration Hospital. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, gambling, Jim Beam, and especially spending time with his family and friends. He was known as “Frank” to many, “Pete” to some, and “Sonny” to his family.

On August 9, 1974, in Las Vegas, Nevada, he was married to LaVon M. “Vonnie” Woodman. LaVon preceded him in death on February 4, 1998.

Survivors include one sister, Susie Lee Brown and her companion Robert Mack of Barling, Arkansas; two brothers: Howard James Peterson and his wife Charlotte of Phoenix, Arizona, and Doug Wiseman and his wife Cathy of Phoenix, Arizona; one sister-in-law, Capitola Woodman of Manhattan; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and his God children: Jameson and Heather Lund.

Cremation is planned with memorial services to be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, December 4th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Pastor Todd Weston officiating. Private family inurnment will be held in Fort Riley Cemetery with full military honors.

Robert Arnold Fritzson

Robert Arnold Fritzson, former Manhattan area resident, passed away at his home in Turpin, Oklahoma on Tuesday, November 28, 2006.

He was born in Manhattan, Kansas, the son of Oscar and Mabel (Wohler) Fritzson. They lived on the family farm until Robert was 14 at which time they moved into Manhattan where he finished his schooling. After he graduated, he worked for the Kansas State Agronomy Farm until moving to Wichita, Kansas. While living in Wichita, he was activated by the National Guard, and was stationed in Colorado Springs, Colorado. After his active duty, he moved back to Wichita, Kansas where he went to work for the Hoidale Company. They installed and serviced gas pumps, tanks and related equipment. He was transferred by Hoidale to Garden City, Kansas. He then moved to Liberal, Kansas and became a member of the First Baptist Church. He managed the Bulk Fuel distributorship for Wes-Kan Oil Co. He then became self-employed in the fuel business until his medical situation caused him to leave the trucking business.

Robert enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He also loved Classic Cars and going to car shows. He also developed an interest in old tractors.

On November 12, 1987, he married Elaine Posl Taylor; she survives of the home. Additional survivors include three daughters: Michelle Gonzales and her husband Donny George of Elizabeth, Colorado, Robin Gran and her husband Michael of Pueblo, Colorado, and Stephanie Barrera of Platte City, Missouri. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren. Other survivors include three brothers: Harlyn Fritzson and his wife Susie of St. Joseph, Missouri, Delane Fritzson of Lake Wabaunsee, and Orlin Fritzson and his wife Sharon of Randolph, Kansas. The three brothers blessed him with eight nieces and nephews.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Mabel Fritzson.

A funeral celebrating his life will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 2, 2006, at the Swede Creek United Methodist Church in rural Randolph, Kansas, with Reverends Sharlan and Michael Graber and Reverend David Bagwell officiating. Interment will follow in the Swede Creek Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Friday evening at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

Elbert Daniel McNeil

Elbert Daniel McNeil, our beloved husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather, passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, December 3, 2006, at the Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, MO.

He was the only child of Elbert and Agnes (Fedde) McNeil, born on November 10, 1922, in La Junta, CO, and raised in Satanta, KS.

After completing undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Colorado in Boulder and an internship at San Diego County General Hospital in California, Mac returned to his home town of Satanta to practice medicine for two years.

He was commissioned in the Medical Corps of the U.S. army where he served at Fort Campbell, KY, and Frankfurt, Germany between 1951 and 1953.

In 1956, Mac completed his residency at the Mayo Clinic and moved his family to Manhattan. Dr. McNeil practiced Pediatrics in Manhattan for more than 30 years.

He was a devoted Christian and attended the University Christian Church. Mac was active and a well respected member of Manhattan. He was also a member of the Manhattan Country Club and enjoyed attending the Kansas State University football games and was a season ticket holder for nearly 50 years. He loved to tell a good story or a funny joke.

After his retirement he audited classes at K-State, played bridge, swam at the Natatorium, traveled internationally, and enjoyed writing poetry. He had poems published in the Best Poems of 1997 and again in 1998 of the National Library of Poetry. He won first place in the 2000 Poetry Contest from the Society of Creative Writers.

There are not enough good words to describe the loving, kind, positive, gentle soul who set a wonderful example for his family. He lavished his children with praise and support, and never hesitated to say how proud they made him.

Dr. McNeil was married to the former Mary Frances Dixon. She preceded him in death on December 23, 1965. He later married Joan Sistrunk in 1973. Mrs. Joan McNeil, PhD, survives of Manhattan. Additional survivors include daughter Nancy Meidinger and her husband Bob of Lenexa, KS, son John McNeil M.D. and his wife Susan of Leawood, KS, son Tom McNeil M.D. and his wife Marie and their children Robert, Andrew and Sara of Corpus Christi, TX, daughter Susan McCaskill and husband Jerry of Norman, OK, and their children Daniel, Alice and Anna; step-sons, Ted Sistrunk and his wife Friz, Tim Sistrunk and his wife Sarah and their children Ben and Hannah, and step-daughters, Holly Friesen and husband Rob and children Katie, Natalie and Caroline, and Wendy Sistrunk.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday at the University Christian Church with Reverend David Pape officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan.

The family of Dr. McNeil will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M. Tuesday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

The family wishes to thank the ICU staff at Mercy Regional Health Center, KU Medical Center, and the Kansas City Hospice House for their excellent care and compassion.

Jana Z. Petty

Jana Z. Petty, 63 of Manhattan, Kansas passed away on Monday December 4, 2006, mother, grandmother and sister.

She was born on July 12, 1943 in Independence, MO., to Winston F. and Zoe V. (Tarvin) Capps. Jana graduated from Wamego High School. She spent most of her adult life in Oklahoma City, OK., where she raised her sons. She then returned to Manhattan where she re-married and worked at Wal-Mart.

Jana leaves behind her two children: Russell Stanberry of Las Vegas, NV and Christopher Stanberry of Lawrence, KS.; her brothers: Thomas Capps of Mercer Island, WA and Douglas Capps of Oklahoma City, OK; and one grandchild: Cameron Stanberry, Las Vegas, NV.

She was preceded in death by her husband Del Petty in 1998.

Memorial Services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Friday December 8, 2006 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas with Rev. Neil Engle officiating. There will be no visitation.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.

Martha Ellen Buer

Martha Ellen Buer, age 87, died Monday December 4, 2006 at the Chapman Valley Manor, Chapman, Kansas.

Miss Martha was born on April 10, 1919 in Concordia, Kansas the daughter of Ed and Louisa (Olson) Buer, and was a Manhattan resident since 1953.

She graduated from Concordia High School. She worked as a Laboratory Technician in the Biology Department of Kansas State University, retiring in 1981. She actively worked with her beloved children through the Grandparenting program at Bluemont Elementary school and storytime at Manhattan Public Library.

Martha was a member of the First Lutheran church since 1953. She was very active in church and was a Sunday school teacher since 1953, was the Sunday school superintendent for several years, served on several committees including WELCA and Bus Ministry and was a longtime choir member. She was voted "Volunteer of the Year" for Big Lakes Developmental Center in the early 1980’s.

She enjoyed living, loving children, helping others, hatching baby chickens, gardening, flowers, crafts and needle work.

Survivors include her sister Bertha Brown of Belton, Missouri; sister-in-law Imogene Buer of Mesa, Arizona; best friend Sarah Hix and many more loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Julian Buer.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, December 15th, at the First Lutheran Church with Reverend Dr. Keith E. Wiens officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery.

Richard “Rick” Lindsay Bowles

Richard “Rick” Lindsay Bowles, age 63, of Manhattan, died Sunday, December 10, 2006, at the Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan.

He was born on October 25, 1943, in Montreal, Canada, the son of G. William and Lois Elizabeth (Lindsay) Bowles.

Rick earned his Bachelor of Science in History from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1966.

Rick was employed by the American Red Cross and served in numerous locations during his career. From 1968-1969 he served a tour of duty in Vietnam and from 1969-1970 he was Assistant Station Manager at the Great Lakes Navel Base. From 1970-1972 he was at K.I. Sawyer AFB, Michigan and from 1972 until 1974, he served a tour of duty in the Philippine Islands. In 1974 he became Station Manager at Minot AFB in North Dakota, moving to Omaha, Nebraska in 1977 where he became a Division Field Representative until 1983. In 1983, he moved to Manhattan where he would work as an Office Manager for the American Red Cross at Ft. Riley, Kansas until 1994. He then went to Camp Casey, Korea where he served as Assistant Station Manager for the American National Red Cross until October 1995. In November 1995, he moved to Ft. Carson, Colorado where he was acting Station Manager in the manager’s absence. In July of 1997, he returned to Manhattan where he became Director of Programs and Services for the American Red Cross, Riley County Chapter until his retirement in May 1998. Rick’s areas of expertise with the Red Cross were in CPR/First Aid and Instructor of Fund Raising and Disaster.

Rick was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Manhattan. He loved history, reading and the arts. He especially was an avid trivia fan and enjoyed watching Jeopardy on television. He also enjoyed participating in dinner groups and when he was younger enjoyed camping. Rick enjoyed visiting with his grandchildren, and was an avid sports fan supporting K-State and the Green Bay Packers.

On June 14, 1970, in New London, Wisconsin, he was united in marriage to the former Lynn J. Krueger. She survives of the home. Also surviving is one daughter: Carrie L. Morton and her husband Paul of Denver, CO, one son: Scott R. Bowles and his wife Amanda also of Denver, his mother: Lois Campbell of Green Bay, WI, one brother: D. Randall Bowles and his wife Mary of De Pere, WI and one sister: Robyn Bowles of San Antonio, Texas. Seven grandchildren also survive.

Rick was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 14, 2006, at the Peace Lutheran Church in Manhattan with Pastor Michael Ide officiating. Interment will be later in the Floral Hills Cemetery in New London, Wisconsin.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

Memorials have been established for the Wisconsin Historical Society, the Peace Lutheran Church of Manhattan and the Flint Hills Red Cross for Disaster Relief. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.

Dorothy E. Brown McHugh

Dorothy E. Brown McHugh, 72, died on Sunday December 10, 2006 at the Stoneybrook Retirement Community, Manhattan, Kansas.

She was born on March 17, 1934 in Birmingham, Alabama to Oliver Lawton and Susie Belle (Whitley) Haynes one of three other children: Madeline, Kenneth and Billy all of whom have died. Then after her came Richard and Cheryl. They all have preceded her in death.

Her father was a greenhouse worker and her Mother was a homemaker. Her father's job would take them all over and one of those towns was Enid, Oklahoma. Her family recalls her speak of it but they still don’t know why she liked it, but she did like the Oklahoma football team.

Dorothy was a cook in a restaurant and also a taxi driver in Columbus, Georgia. She enjoyed driving, bingo, embroidery and especially spending time with her daughter and granddaughter. She was very proud of her family.

Dorothy came to St. George about 16 years ago from Columbus, Georgia to live with her daughter due to Dorothy’s health at the time. Then she met Elmer J. McHugh and they were married, residing in Ogden, Kansas. After he passed away, she returned to St. George and finally to the Stoneybrook Retirement Community in Manhattan, Ks.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband: Frankie Junior Brown, her second husband: Elmer J. McHugh; 3 brothers: Billy L. Haynes, Kenneth D. Haynes and Richard L. Haynes; two sisters: Madeline J. Wilson and Cheryl Sue Dykes.

Survivors include her daughter: Carol Ann Brown Rogers and husband Robert G., of St. George; Granddaughter: Amanda Suzanne Dabney of Mobile, Alabama; 4 step grandsons and eight step great grandchildren.

Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday December 14, 2006 at the St. George United Methodist Church, St. George, Kansas with Pastor Roger O. Shanks officiating. Inurnment will be in the St. George Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home 1616 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, Kansas 66502.

Elaine L. (Olmstead) Bagley

Elaine L. (Olmstead) Bagley, age 86, of Manhattan, died December 10, 2006, at Stoneybrook Retirement Community in Manhattan.

She was born March 19, 1920 in Washington, D.C., daughter of Lewis Bertie and Grace Elizabeth (Edwards) Olmstead.

Elaine graduated from Eastern High School in Washington. D.C. and attended Wilson Teacher’s College for one year before graduating from Strayer Business College. She also attended American University as a part-time student while she was employed during WWII. Between 1940 and 1943, Elaine worked at the Department of Agriculture and the Treasury Department. During WWII she worked at the Petroleum Administration for the War in Washington D.C. After the war she moved to Manhattan, Kansas where she enrolled at Kansas State College. Elaine worked in the office of the Department of Economics and Sociology while in college. She received her bachelor’s degree in Sociology from K-State on May 30, 1948.

On August 7, 1949, in Manhattan, she was married to Edgar Sidney Bagley. He preceded her in death on October 3, 2005. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Lewis and her twin Merlin; and one sister, Leola Marshall.

Mrs. Bagley was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ. She was very active in the Women’s Fellowship both locally and in the Kansas-Oklahoma Conference of the United Church of Christ. She was a great advocate for the conference’s White Memorial Camp. At the 2001 General Synod of the United Church of Christ she was recognized as an honored laywoman of the Kansas-Oklahoma Conference. She was a member and held many offices in the League of Women Voters. She was especially interested in local and state finance issues and governmental structure in relation to citizen access to decision making. She was also a member of La Sertoma. Elaine’s many interests included music, golf, needlework, dressmaking, reading, and bird watching.

Survivors include four children: James O. Bagley and his wife Dayla of Topeka, KS, Jane B. Dahem and her husband Bizhan of San Jose, CA, Elizabeth A. LoMastro of Blue Bell, PA, and Elaine L. Bagley of Overland Park, KS; one sister, Helen Stinger of Rio Rancho, NM; and eight grandchildren: Cameron Dahem, Matt and Dan LoMastro, Joseph, Grace, Gregory, Theresa and Thomas Bagley.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, December 15th, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Manhattan, with Reverend R. Kent Cormack officiating. Private family intermenty will be in Sunrise Cemetery.

The family of Mrs. Bagley will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the First Congregational United Church of Christ or the White Memorial Camp. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS 66502.
