Charley O. Adams

INDEPENDENCE - Charley Oscar Adams, 84, of rural Independence died at 8:05 a.m. Friday, June 18, 2004, at his home.

He was born Dec. 15, 1919, at Hulbert, Okla., to J.W. and Mary (Rogers) Adams. He attended schools in Hulbert. He was employed with Sheldon Grain for many years and later worked at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant in Parsons until his retirement.

He married Leola M. Wilkey on Feb. 22, 1941, in Hulbert. She survives of the home.

He attended the First Christian Church and was a member of Farm Bureau and the VFW. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Other survivors include two sons, B.J. Adams of Ochelata, Okla., and Tom Adams of Oklahoma City; three daughters, Peggy Elaine Adams of Independence, Glenda Burkhart of Omaha, Neb., and Janell Daily of Riverside, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Norma Jean Clubine and Joyace Ann Gordan.

The service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Potts Chapel in Independence with the Rev. Jim Stovall of the First Christian Church of Independence officiating. Burial will be at Pratt Cemetery east of Independence. Friends may call from noon until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, where family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Memorials to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice or First Christian Church may be left at the funeral home.

Gayle J. Allen

NEODESHA - Gayle Jeanne Allen, 71, of Neodesha died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, at Wilson County Hospital.

She was born Feb. 27, 1932, in Neodesha to Charles and Lucile (Clark) Killion. She graduated from Neodesha High School in 1950. She graduated from Independence Community College with an associate of arts degree in 1992.

She married Max M. Allen on Oct. 7, 1951, in Neodesha. He survives of the home.

She was a homemaker and worked various jobs and volunteer positions. She cooked at Neodesha Nursing Home, wrote a weekly cooking column for the Neodesha Sun, was a child care provider, a substitute teacher in Neodesha schools, delivered flowers for Newland Floral and worked at Norman No. 1 Museum. She also taught a toddler's Sunday school class at Neodesha United Methodist Church for nearly 15 years, was involved in PTA, coached girls softball, was a member of Music Club and sang in "Madrigal" choir.

She was a member of Neodesha United Methodist Church and Neodesha United Methodist Women, serving as president for several years. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.

She enjoyed photography, camping, cake decorating and baking.

Other survivors include one son, David Edward Allen of Derby; three daughters, Meredith Jeanne Allen Fiscus of Mound Valley, Nancy Elizabeth Allen Estes of Independence and Mary Charlene Allen Hughes of Olathe; nine grandchildren, Tony Allen, Jennifer Perryman, Melinda Taylor, Joshua Fiscus, Tami Fiscus, Roxanne Estes, Keith Estes, Ashley Hughes and Abby Hughes; three great-grandchildren, Meredith and Tristan Taylor and Gavriela Perryman; and two sisters, Bonita (Reece) Merrill of Grand Junction, Colo., and Glenna Craig of Kingman.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Neodesha United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kris Brinlee officiating, followed by celebration of her life in Fellowship Hall. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Loran Fawcett Funeral Home in Neodesha. A private family graveside service will be held later.

Raven A. Allen

PITTSBURG - Raven Alexandra Allen, infant daughter of Jason and Tammie Allen of rural Pittsburg, died at 11:30 p.m. July 3, 2004, at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

She was born Friday, July 2, 2004, at Pittsburg to Jason and Tammie (Burk) Allen.

Survivors include her parents, Jason and Tammie Allen of rural Pittsburg; paternal grandparents, Lisa and Richard Beck of Erie and Terry and Stephanie Allen of Olathe; maternal grandparents, Ronald and Pamela Burk of rural McCune; paternal great-grandparents, Paul Beard of rural Erie and Betty Beck of Chanute; maternal great-grandmother, Norma Roach of Manhattan; three uncles, Jeffery Beck of Erie, John Burk of Carl Junction, Mo., and Cory Burk of Parsons; and two aunts, Jodee Lewis of Dennis and Jessica Allen of Olathe.

She was preceded in death by two paternal great-grandparents, Eloise Beard and Lawrence Beck; and three maternal great-grandparents, John W. Roach, Margaret Burk and Cedric Burk.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Erie Federated Church with the Rev. Larry Jordan officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in rural Erie. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Erie.

Myrta L. Amelon

SCAMMON ‹ Myrta L. Amelon, 82, of Scammon died at 9:55 p.m. Sunday, July 20, 2003, at the Mount Carmel Regional Medical Center.

She was born June 12, 1921, in Welty, Okla., to Charles Edward and Lillie Belle (Taylor) Grimes.

She married Virgil J. Amelon on May 16, 1946, in Tulsa. He preceded her in death on Aug. 14, 2000.

She had been a resident of Scammon for 15 years. Before that she resided at Grove, Okla.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include one son, David Amelon of Scammon; a daughter, Cheryl Amelon of Scammon; one brother, Joseph Grimes of Amarillo, Texas; and a sister, Izetta Grimes of Cushing, Okla.

She was preceded in death by two sisters.

Cremation has taken place and no service is planned.

Bath-Naylor Funeral Home of Weir is in charge of the arrangements.

Marsha A. Anderson

ROGERS, Ark. - Marsha Anne Anderson, 54, of Rogers died Monday, June 7, 2004, in Garfield, Ark.

She was born May 14, 1950, in Syracuse to Andrew Charles and Betty Jeane (Long) Anderson.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Bentonville, Ark.

Survivors include her parents of Fulton, Texas; one son, Trevor Gum of Pittsburg; two grandchildren; and two sisters, Vicky Eillis of Richfield and Gayla Gaines of Colorado Springs, Colo.

The service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Roaring River State Park south of Cassville, Mo., with Jack Smith officiating. Cremation and service arrangements are by Rollins Funeral Home of Rogers, Ark.

Memorials to Kaylee Gum and Tyler Gum Education Fund may be mailed to the funeral home, 1401 Hudson Road, Rogers, Ark., 72756 or to Kansas Teachers Credit Union.

Robert Angleton

ERIE - Robert Angleton, 43, of rural Erie, died at 11:41 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident on U.S. 59 north of Moran.

He was born March 30, 1960, in Chanute to Cecil A. and Clara May (Deweese) Angleton. He was a lifelong Erie area resident and graduated from Erie High School in 1978. He attended two years of vocational technical school at Pittsburg State University.

From 1980 to 1990 he was employed by Sears Brothers and then for three years by Beachner Grain Co. Since 1993 he had worked as a milk hauler for Peters and Sons.

He was a member of the Erie Federated Church, Ducks Unlimited and Water Fowl U.S.A. He loved to hunt turkey and geese.

He married Connie L. Weir on June 8, 1984, in Erie. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include one son, Riley A. Angleton; two daughters, Deidre M. Angleton and Kylie L. Angleton, all of the home; his parents, Cecil and Clara May Angleton of Erie; two sisters, Darlene Sears and Gayle Kanute, both of Erie; several nieces and nephews; and his hunting companion, Jessie.

The service was today at Erie Federated Church with the Revs. Ralph Jarboe and Mark Clevenger officiating. Burial was in East Hill Cemetery in Erie.

Memorials to the Angleton Children's Education Fund may be left at or mailed to Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Erie.

M. Dwaine Ashcraft

ERIE - M. Dwaine Ashcraft, 87, a longtime Erie resident, died at 10:20 a.m. Wedne-sday, June 23, 2004, at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute. He had been in failing health.

He was born Dec. 12, 1916, in Veteran, Alberta, Canada, to Homer H. and Effie (Gilpin) Shafer-Ashcraft. At age 4, his family moved to Neosho County, where he attended school. He operated a dairy farm from 1936 until he suffered a heart attack in 1969. He also delivered milk for a number of years. He was a probate judge from 1973 until 1975. He was a custodian at the St. Paul High School from 1975 until retiring in 1982. In 1988 he started the Tack and Saddle Shop in Erie, which he operated until 1995.

He married Ethel Currie on Nov. 26, 1936, in Girard. She preceded him in death on April 25, 1994.

He was a member of Erie Christian Church. He served on the board of directors of Neosho Valley Creamery, which later merged with Mid-America Dairymen.

He was member of Erie Saddle Club. From 1970 until 1980 he took annual trail rides with people from four states. The largest ride consisted of 43 wagons and 68 riders. He also enjoyed playing dominos.

Survivors include one son, Roger Dean Ashcraft and his wife, Kathryn, of St. Louis; four grandchildren, Alan Ashcraft of Nashville, Tim Ashcraft and his wife, Marti, of Atlanta and Christina Kennedy-Ratcliff and Mike Kennedy, both of Garnett; six great-grandchildren, Jennifer Ashcraft, Jessica Ashcraft and Jonathan Ashcraft, all of Atlanta, Erika Ashcraft and Aaron Ashcraft, both of Nashville, and Brian Kennedy of Garnett; one brother, Dale Ashcraft of Yosemite, Calif.; and one sister, Jennie Benedict of Long Beach, Calif.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Maurine Ashcraft-Kennedy, in 1998; one brother, Vaughn Ashcraft; two sisters, Irene Kimball and Arelia Ashcraft; and two half-brothers, Ivan Shafer and Joe Ashcraft.

The service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Erie Christian Church with the Revs. Debi Lorenz and Bill Bingham officiating. Burial will be in East Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, where friends can call after 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Memorials to Erie Christian Church or to First Baptist Church may be left at or mailed to the funeral home.

Josephine E. Attebery

Josephine E. Attebery, 94, of Parsons died at 9:32 p.m. Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Elmhaven West nursing home. She had been a resident there since 1990 and had been in failing health for some time.

She was born June 24, 1909, to Henry J. and Mary (Journot) Quirin on her family's farm east of Parsons. She attended Oak Grove and Concord rural schools.

She married Wayne M. Attebery on Jan. 19, 1930, at St. Joseph's Church in South Mound. He preceded her in death on Nov. 2, 1970. She and her husband lived on farms near several Southeast Kansas communities including Montana, Oswego and Chetopa. In 1946, they lived near Tucson, Ariz., for 3 1/2 years while working on several ranches. Returning to Kansas in 1949, they resided on a farm near Dennis before moving to their final home together northeast of Parsons. After her husband's death, she sold her farm and moved to Parsons. She lived alone until entering the care facility in 1990.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Parsons. She enjoyed playing bingo and singing country western music.

Survivors include one brother, Henry J. Quirin and his wife, Leona, of Parsons; three nephews, James B. Quirin of Parsons, Leon Attebery of Eureka and Ray Attebery of Lebanon, Mo.; and three nieces, Carol S. Trammell of Kansas City, Kan., Bonnie J. LeTourneau of Mount Prospect, Ill., and Coleen Attebery-Hazelwood of Broken Arrow, Okla.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Quirin, and a sister, Anna Heck.

The service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the Rev. Robert Wachter officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The rosary will be at 7 p.m. today at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends until 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Juanita M. Bailey

OSWEGO - Juanita M. Bailey, 87, a longtime Parsons resident, died at 8:10 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2003, at the Home Place in Oswego, where she had resided for three years.

She was born June 12, 1916, at Mound Valley to John E. Tedstrom Sr. and Ruth (Whitted) Tedstrom. She graduated from Parsons High School in 1934.

She married Harry C. Bailey on June 12, 1938, in Parsons. They operated Harry's Cafe in Parsons for more than 35 years. Before her marriage she had worked as a beauty operator. After retiring from the restaurant business she operated Nita's Beauty Shop and Boutique. He preceded her in death on April 25, 1993.

She was a member of the former Washington Avenue United Methodist Church in Parsons and had been active in its women's circles.

Survivors include one daughter, Jennifer Easley of Burleson, Texas; two sons, Bill Bailey and his wife, Brenda, of Plano, Texas, and Jeffery Bailey and his wife, Nancy, of Elkhart, Ind.; seven grandchildren, Trisha McGinnis, Tim Conrad, Christopher, Andrea and Nichole Bailey, Beth Ann and Bradley Bailey; six great-grandchildren, Justin, Nathan, Brittany, Ashley, Micala and Karli; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Shaina and Seth; and one sister, Patricia Proctor of Katy, Texas.

She was preceded in death by a brother, John E. Tedstrom Jr.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons with the Rev. Peggy Hillmon officiating assisted by the Rev. Wallace Proctor Jr., nephew of Mrs. Bailey. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons.

Memorials may be made to the Parsons Community Foundation Scholarship Fund.

Elizabeth M. Barnes

Elizabeth May Barnes, 68, of Parsons died at 5:11 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at her home. She had been ill for several months.

She was born Sept. 6, 1935, to Winifred Griggs.

Survivors include two daughters, Janice Dodson of Cabot, Ark., and Holly Kinnamon of Parsons; two sons, David Dean and Eric Barnes, both of Parsons; her mother, Winifred Griggs of Parsons; and two sisters, Gay McKinney of Parsons and Diana Spriggs of Baldwin.

A private family service will be Friday at Memorial Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Dois Nix officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home.

Memorials to Hynes Memorial Hospice may be left at or mailed to the funeral home, 405 Main, P.O. Box 374, Parsons.

Rita Bash

Rita (Daley) Bash, 79, of Parsons died at 10:45 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2003, at Elmhaven East nursing home, where she entered June 10. She had resided at 1511 Chess for many years.

She was born June 21, 1924, in Parsons to James S. and Mary B. (Steil) Daley. She grew up and attended schools in Parsons, graduating from Parsons High School. From 1943 to 1946, she worked for National Life Insurance Co. in Parsons. In 1947, she moved to Tulsa, where she worked for Amoco Pipeline Co. for 20 years. She also attended the University of Tulsa, majoring in business administration. From 1968 to 1969 she worked at the Liberty Glass Co. in Sapulpa, Okla., and from 1970 to 1972 she worked for the First National Bank and Trust in Tulsa. In 1973, she moved to San Antonio and worked for the University of Texas until 1978. In 1979, she moved to Houston, where she worked for the Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Co. In 1984 she returned to Parsons.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Parsons and the St. Vincent De Paul Society. While living in Tulsa, she had been a member of the Tulsa Little Theater, Desk and Derrick, Catholic Activities Club, Philbrook Art Museum, Tulsa Press Club, Elk's Club and St. John's Vianny Girls Home.

She married Louise E. "Ed" Bash on Aug. 18, 1960, in Sapulpa, Okla. He preceded her in death on Feb. 26, 1982.

Survivors are two brothers, Bernard F. Daley and John E. Daley, both of Parsons; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, Michael J. Daley; and two sisters, Margaret F. Lansdowne and Mary Williams.

The service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the Rev. Robert Wachter officiating. She was cremated. Burial of the cremains will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. The rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, where family will receive friends following the rosary.

Memorials to St. Patrick Catholic School Endowment Fund can be sent to the funeral home, 405 Main, Parsons.

George E. Beech

CHANUTE - George E. Beech, 94, of Chanute died Saturday, April 10, 2004, at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center.

He was born on Sept. 21, 1909, in rural St. Paul to George and Rose (Squires) Beech.

He lived in the Walnut and Stark areas and attended Cleveland High School.

He married Ruth Smith in 1929 in Erie. She preceded him in death.

A lifelong farmer and stockman in the Walnut area, he moved to Chanute in 1993.

Survivors include three sons, Wayne Beech and Max Beech, both of Chanute, and Paul "Bud" Beech of Iola; one daughter, Evelyn Dunham of Manhattan; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five sisters, Edna Madl, Elsie Little, Merle Eggen, Maude Conrad and Lucille Zaman; and one brother, Jim Beech.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Stark United Methodist Church. Burial will be in East Hill Cemetery in Erie.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Gibson-Koch-Friskel Chapel at Chanute.

Memorials to the American Heart Association or to the Cherry Street Youth Organization may be left at or sent to the funeral home.
