Beverly Martinez
CARL JUNCTION, Mo. - Beverly Jeanne Martinez, 82, of Carl Junction died Wednesday, March 17, 2004, in a nursing center.
She was born Nov. 25, 1921, in Parsons to David Otto and Ada (Williams) Tilman and had lived in Parsons most of her life.
She was a school teacher for Mound Valley Grade School for five years. She also had worked as a seamstress for Broderick Manufacturing for several years.
She was active in the VFW and taught ceramics in Parsons for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Francisco, on March 15, 1972.
Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Martinez of Carl Junction and Eric Martinez of Minnesota; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Faye Tierney.
She was also preceded in death by a grandchild.
Cremation has taken place. A family service will be held at a later date.
Parker Mortuary of Joplin is in charge of arrangements.
Frank Martino
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Frank Martino, 92, of Springfield died at 6:22 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at his home. He had been in failing health since suffering a heart attack in December.
He was born Feb. 3, 1912, in Carona to James and Rosa Martino. He attended school in Cherokee, having to leave at an early age to mine coal to help raise and educate his siblings. He was a self-taught musician and played guitar in the Black and Tan Orchestra in area dance halls.
He was mayor of Cherokee for two terms after having served on the city council. He was a lifetime member of Cherokee Masonic Lodge, where he was a past master and received his 50-year pin in January 1997.
He was a plumber and steamfitter for many years and was a member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters local in Frontenac. He later bought a McDonalds franchise in Ottumwa, Iowa, then moved to Neenah, Wis., with McDonalds, where he resided until retiring in 1976. He moved to Springfield, where he worked in custom guitar-making.
He married Virginia Stough of Cherokee. She preceded him in death in 1991.
Survivors include four children, Bill Martino of Reno, Nev., Frances Phillips and Jerry Martino, both of Springfield, and Fred Martino of Girard; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters, Mary, Florence, Virginia, Julia, Ethel, Louis, Alex, Bruno and Mike.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Cherokee City Cemetery with the Rev. Dave Boling officiating. Masonic rites will be given by Cherokee Masonic Lodge. Friends may call after 11 a.m. Friday at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg. The casket will remain closed.
Robert L. Marvin
Robert L. Marvin, 67, of 1606 Felix died at 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Elmhaven East nursing home. He was in failing health.
He was born on Sept. 2, 1935, in Parsons to Clarence and Dollie Idella (Smith) Marvin. His father died at an early age and he was raised by his mother and stepfather, General Stinson. He grew up in Parsons and attended Washington Elementary School. He began working for Beachner Construction and worked there for 10 years. He later worked at Parsons State Hospital and Training Center for 12 years. In 1986 he went to work at Elmhaven East nursing home as a certified nurse's aide. He was disabled in 1996.
He married Mary Holding on Jan. 8, 1962, in Miami, Okla. She survives of the home.
He was a member of the First Foursquare Church. He enjoyed recording movies and cassette tapes.
Other survivors include two stepdaughters, Carol and Karen, both of Parsons; two grandchildren; a brother, Vernon Charles Marvin and family of McCune; and two sisters, Gayle Stinson and Kathy Blake, both of Parsons.
He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Paula; and a niece, Staci Blake.
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Hope Cemetery in St. Paul with Gene Edwards officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home.

Dave P. Matthews
Dave P. Matthews, 72, of Parsons died at 3:35 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at Labette County Medical Center, where he entered Dec. 26, 2003.
He was born July 10, 1931, at Las Estancia, N.M., to William and Ora (Moss) Matthews. He grew up and attended schools at Muskogee and Sallisaw, Okla., He was employed by the city of Muskogee as a heavy equipment operator in his early adult years. He served in the United States Army as a Ranger during the Korean War. He was employed at Katy and Union Pacific railroads from 1963 to 1993 as a carman. He and his family moved to Parsons in 1973.
He married Anna Long. They were divorced.
He married Inez Breshears. They were divorced.
He married Mary L. McLaughlin on Jan. 25, 1972, at Tahlequah, Okla. She survives of the home.
He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and in his younger years spending time on the Arkansas River in Oklahoma.
Other survivors include one son, John David Matthews of Galena; one stepson, John Charles McLaughlin of Oceanside, Calif.; three daughters, Diane Cullum and Deana Moore, both of Muskogee, Okla., and June Hall of Oktaha, Okla.; two stepdaughters, Mary McLaughlin of Parsons and Katrina Hastings of Joplin; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Eva Horton of Muskogee, Okla.
He was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.
No service is planned. Friends may call Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons at their convenience until Tuesday. Cremation will take place.
Maudie M. Johnson May
Maudie M. Johnson May, 81, a longtime resident of Parsons, died at 4:13 a.m. today, Friday, June 11, 2004, at Good Samaritan Center. She had been in failing health.
She was born May 17, 1923, in Labette City to Clyde and Mary (Agnew) Owens. She lived in Labette County for most of her life.
She married Kenneth W. Johnson on June 28, 1941. They were divorced. He preceded her in death on May 6, 1972.
She married Harry L. "Sam" May in June 1971. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include one son, Kenneth "Sonny" Johnson Jr. and his wife, Diane, of Parsons; three daughters, Linda Snapp and her husband, Bob, of Parsons, Carol De Los Santos of Las Vegas, and Phyllis McCauley and her husband, Greg, address unknown; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Chuck Johnson and Danny Johnson; two daughters, Lisa McGuire and Debi McRay; two brothers, Max Owens and Elmer Owens; and one sister, Jerene Buchanan.
The service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Altamont with the Revs. Janet Chubb and Sharon Billman officiating. Friends may call at their convenience at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home.

John O. McCartney
EDNA - John Owens McCartney, 77, of Edna died Saturday morning, Feb. 14, 2004, at his home.
He was born April 28, 1926, in Valeda to James F. and Bernice (Thompson) McCartney. He was raised in Angola and moved to Edna at age 14. He lived in Coffeyville from 1955-1960, before moving back to Edna.
He married Ruby Lee Martin on Feb. 26, 1955, in Nowata, Okla. She survives of the home.
He worked for Dixon Manufacturing as a machine operator. He was also employed by Continental Can Co., Olin Dixon Inc. and the last 16 years for Labette County Highway Department, retiring in 1988.
He was a member of Edna Assembly of God, KPERS and Royal Neighbors of America. He enjoyed listening to music of the Gaithers, doing yard work and gardening. He also loved his dogs and cats and raising chickens.
Additional survivors are two sons, John M. McCartney and his wife, Lorey, of Coffeyville, and Patrick A. McCartney of Edna; three grandchildren, Michelle, Brandy and Bryan; and a great-granddaughter, Krysten.
He was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Zachery McCartney; six brothers, Frank, Merle, Clarence, Ellwood, Leo "Dale" and Fred; and three sisters, Gladys, Ora and Jennie.
The service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Graves Funeral Home Chapel with burial in North Edna Cemetery under the direction of Ford-Wulf-Bruns Funeral Home of Coffeyville. Friends may call until 8 p.m. tonight and from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Graves Funeral Home Chapel. Family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. tonight at Graves Funeral Home.

Earl R. McColm
PITTSBURG - Earl R. McColm, 78, former Crawford County commissioner, died at 5:05 a.m. Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at Cornerstone Village in Pittsburg.
He was born Nov. 1, 1925, in Monmouth to Earl D. and Julia (Hardin) McColm. He attended McCune schools and graduated from McCune High School in 1943.
He married Twyla M. Hickman on July 28, 1946, in rural McCune. She survives at the family home at Pittsburg.
He was a farmer and stockman in rural McCune all of his life. He served as a county commissioner for two terms from 1991 to 1999, including two terms as chairman.
He was a member of Osage Church of the Brethren. He served on the McCune School Board for 12 years; Crawford County Conservation District for 19 years; Neosho Basin Advisory Committee; Kansas Limousin Breeders Association, where he served as president; McCune Lions Club for 24 years; USD 247 board member for four years; Elm Acres Youth Home Board Member for six years; McCune Co-op and Farmers Nitrate Association for four years; and president of the McCune Friendship Villa Inc. He was an officer of the first taxpayers association organized in Crawford County.
Other survivors include one son, Clint Earl "Mackie" McColm of McCune; two daughters, Sheila A. Markley of Pittsburg and Shelley M. Parks of Ottawa; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Merle McColm of McCune; and six sisters, Wilma Parsons of Bella Vista, Ark., Cecile Burns of St. Louis, Mo., Anna Mae Scales Bury of Arma, Doris Peters of Kennewick, Wash., Ruth Barns of Chehalis, Wash., and Lois Riggs of Chillicothe, Ill.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Julia Faye Scales, Burtis Kelley and Wanda Westhoff.
The service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Brenner Mortuary Chapel in Pittsburg with the Rev. Harold Groth officiating. Burial will be in Osage Brethren Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m.

Timothy E. McDaniel
Timothy E. "Tim" McDaniel, 50, a lifelong Parsons resident, died at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, March 28, 2004, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.
The service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons with the Rev. Robert Wachter officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Walnut. The rosary will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends following the rosary.

Timothy E. McDaniel
Timothy E. "Tim" McDaniel, 50, a lifelong resident of Parsons, died at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, March 28, 2004, at University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City.
He was born Jan. 30, 1954, in Parsons to Robert N. "Bob" and Fern L. (Westhoff) McDaniel. He attended St. Patrick's Catholic School and graduated from Parsons High School in 1972. For a time, he worked as a cement finisher with Ernie Hinman in construction. He later was a welder with Kansas Gas and Electric for many years.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
He married Lou Ann Jones on Aug. 2, 1974, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons. They were divorced.
Survivors are three daughters, Ella Barcus, Ann McDaniel and Jennifer McDaniel, all of Parsons; two grandchildren, Hunter Barcus and Caitlin Barcus, both of Parsons; his mother, Fern McDaniel of Frontenac; two brothers, Ron McDaniel of Parsons and Joe McDaniel of Eugene, Ore.; and three sisters, Nila Robinson and Donna Schmid, both of Parsons, and Kathy Martin of Frontenac.
He was preceded in death by his father on July 20, 1999.

Neal G. McDermeit
GALESBURG - Neal G. McDermeit, 87, of Galesburg died at 4 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, at his home. His death was unexpected.
He was born on Sept. 25, 1916, in Kingfisher County, Okla., to Roy H. and Lula (Farnsworth) McDermeit. He graduated from Okeene High School. In 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed stateside during World War II. He was discharged in 1946 and moved to his current home. He worked for Continental Can in Coffeyville for a number of years and worked a short time for Boeing in Wichita. He also farmed.
He married Corrine McMulty on Sept. 28, 1937, at Kingfisher, Okla. She survives and resides at the Parsons Good Samaritan Center.
He was a member of Galesburg United Methodist Church. He served on the board of directors of the Southeast Kansas Area Agency on Aging, and helped deliver meals for the Galesburg Senior Center. He also enjoyed gardening.
Other survivors include one son, Neal Clay McDermeit of Albuquerque; one daughter, Rita Kay Harris of Joplin,; four grandchildren, Brad Harris of Kansas City, Mo., Kimberly Krusi of Silverdale, Wash., Lisa Youree of Anchorage, Alaska, and Darcy McDermeit of Albuquerque.; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Helen Clifton of Oceanside, Calif.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Leslie McDermeit.
The service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Galesburg United Methodist Church with The Rev. Tim McCrary officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery with a flag presentation given by the Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home.

John L. McGannon
PALO ALTO, Calif. - John L. "Jack" McGannon, 75, of Palo Alto, Calif., died March 27, 2004, in Palo Alto, Calif.
He was born to John Leo and Julia McGannon in Humboldt. He moved to Parsons as a child and attended St. Patrick's School and Parsons High School. He worked for the Katy Railroad while in high school. He attended Rockhurst College in Kansas City, Mo., and graduated from Saint Louis University with a bachelor of science degree and a master of science degree in physics. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
After several years as an aerospace engineer for Boeing in Wichita and as a physics instructor at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., he earned a law degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City.
He moved to Palo Alto with his family in 1965 to join the San Francisco law firm of Townsend and Townsend, where he practiced intellectual property law for 30 years.
He was a longtime member of the Palo Alto Catholic community and the Palo Alto chapter of the Elks Club.
He married Winnie O'Bryan of St. Paul. They were married 45 years. She survives.
Additional survivors are four sons, Jack of Laguna Niguel, Calif., Tom of Menlo Park, Calif., Casey of San Francisco and Bryan of Palo Alto; one daughter, Anne Louis of Cedar Grove, N.J.; 11 grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Jo Daley of Parsons.
