Dr. Donald E. McIntosh

LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. - Dr. Donald E. McIntosh, 74, of Lee's Summit died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004. He had been battling cancer.

He was born Jan. 13, 1930, to Charles L. and Mary M. McIntosh. He grew up in Detroit. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1960. He served in the United States Army Medical Corps from 1951 to 1954. He returned to military service as a physician from 1960 to 1961 as a captain. He then entered private general practice in Parsons before leaving to pursue further residency studies in anesthesiology. In 1964, he joined the staff of Anesthesia Associates of Kansas City and remained there until his retirement in 1997. He served on the staff of Research Medical Center, Research Belton Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital, Independence Regional Medical Center; Medical Center of Independence; Baptist Memorial Hospital and Menorah Medical Center.

He was the chief of the department of anesthesiology and president of the medical staff at Research Medical Center. He was president of the Jackson County Medical Society, served on the Council of the Missouri State Medical Association and was twice elected to the vice presidency of the Missouri State Medical Association. He was a delegate to the AMA medical staff section. He was president of the National Catholic Medical Association and held clinical teaching appointments at the University of Kansas Medical Center and the University of Missouri, Kansas City, School of Medicine.

He started the first pain clinic in the state of Missouri.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Norene; one son, Bruce of Beaverton, Ore.; two daughters, Mikail of Austin, Texas, and Sharon of St. Charles, Ill.; four grandchildren; his mother, Mary McIntosh; two sisters, Joan Lyons and Martha Moriarity, all of Crystal Lake, Ill.; and one brother, Kenneth of Fort Wayne, Ind.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 800 S.W. 150 Highway, Lee's Summit, Mo. Burial will be by cremation at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, in National Cemetery in Leavenworth. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at McGilley Funeral Home, where the rosary will be said at 6 p.m.

Edward J. McKinney

DENNIS - Edward J. "Ed" McKinney, 91, of rural Dennis died at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at his home. He had been in failing health for several months from a cancer-related illness.

He was born Oct. 22, 1912, in St. Paul to James A. and Mary Catherine (Westhoff) McKinney. He grew up in the St. Paul and South Mound areas.

He worked at the Parsons Stockyards from the time it opened until 1936, when he moved to San Fernando valley in California. He was a truck driver there until 1939, when he moved to the rural Dennis area, where he had farmed since. He served on the board of Dennis Co-op for several years and on the Labette County Co-op board for 12 years, including eight as chairman. He had served on Twin Mound and Morehead school boards for a number of years. He had also served on Rural Water District No. 3 board and was a member of Big D Senior Citizens Club.

He married Gertrude Phillips on Feb. 21, 1941, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Parsons. She survives of the home.

He enjoyed playing cards with friends, his children and grandchildren.

In earlier years he enjoyed hunting.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons and Knights of Columbus. For many years he was a member of former St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Other survivors include five sons, John A. McKinney and his wife, Brenda, of Anaheim, Calif., Marvin G. McKinney and his wife, Gay, of Parsons, Dwaine J. McKinney and his wife, Mary, of Wichita, Alfred D. McKinney and his wife, Sarah, of Littleton, Calif., and the Rev. Floyd McKinney of Newton; three daughters, Catherine Sullivan and her husband, Jack, of Bellevue, Neb., Marilyn Ray and her husband, Rick, of rural Dennis and Connie Adams and her husband, Tony, of Parsons; 19 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Elmer McKinney, Bill McKinney and Earl McKinney; four sisters, Ann Switzer, Ethel Abel, Agnes Gouvion and Esther Davied; one granddaughter, Angie McKinney; one great-grandson, Kevin McKinney; and an infant granddaughter.

The service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons with his son, the Rev. Floyd McKinney, and the Rev. Robert Wachter officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Parsons. A Knights of Columbus rosary will be said at 6 p.m. today and the parish rosary at 6:30 p.m. at Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons. The family will receive friends following the rosaries.

Memorials to St. Patrick Catholic School may be left at or mailed to the funeral home, Box 942, Parsons.

Norman L. McKinney

BOLIVAR, Mo. - Norman Lee McKinney, 76, of Bolivar, Mo., died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at his home.

He was born June 7, 1927, in Erie to Guy Earl and Cora Mae (Babbs) McKinney. He attended school in Erie and at a young age was baptized in the Methodist Church.

He worked at a hardware store until being drafted into the Marine Corps in 1945. After returning from service, he returned to work for the hardware store. He went to work for Phillips Petroleum Co. in May 1952. He started as an electrician and worked as the maintenance supervisor for 5 1/2 years on the offshore platforms in Norway. He worked for Phillips for 35 years in various locations.

He married Dorothy Oberheide on March 27, 1954. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include one daughter, Debbie Hepler of Bartlesville, Okla.; five sons, Bruce McKinney of Charlotte, N.C., Jay McKinney of Wichita, Mark McKinney, Tod McKinney and Jon McKinney, all of Borger, Texas; 17 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one sister, Eileen Alexander of Kansas City, Mo.

He was preceded in death by seven brothers, three sisters and one daughter.

The service was today at Zion Lutheran Church in Bolivar with the Rev. David Loy officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery near Borger.

Memorials to the church can be mailed to P.O. Box 5, Bolivar, Mo., 65613.

Arrangements were under the direction of Butler Funeral Home of Bolivar.

Marvin W. McKnight

Marvin Woodson McKnight, 80, former Parsons mayor and city commissioner, died at 9:20 a.m. Sunday, May 30, 2004, at Labette County Medical Center.

He was born on May 1, 1924, to Thomas W. McKnight Jr. and Hattie A. (McCloud) McKnight.

He was the director of the Linguistic Laboratory at the University of Kansas, University of California at Irvine, and Howard University in Washington D.C.

He retired to Parsons in 1985, where he became involved in civic activities. He served on the Parsons City Commission and as mayor. He was also instrumental in the building of the new addition of the Hamilton Chapel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include five daughters, Marva McKnight-Williams of Hinesville, Ga., Donzeleigh Hunter and her husband, Howard, Marcia Wynn and her husband, Michael, and Tanya Burton and her husband, Daniel, all of Evanston, Ill., and Angela McKnight of Los Angeles; one son, Thomas McKnight of Phoenix; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three sisters, Wilma Lyons and Jackie Payne, both of Parsons, and Mary Jo Russ and her husband, Curtis, of Detroit; and two brothers, Thomas McKnight of Parsons and James McKnight of Portland, Ore. He is also survived by a great host of nieces and nephews and his faithful and dear friend, Tommy Stewart.

He was preceded in death by one grandson, Justin Wynn; one brother, Paul McKnight; and three sisters, Marian Younge, Glorene Bell and Bernice Booker.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home with the Rev. Lewis O. Smith officiating. Friends may call to sign the register after 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Memorials to Parsons Education Foundation or Hamilton Chapel United Methodist Church may be left at or mailed to the funeral home, P.O. Box 374, Parsons.

Jerry B. Mead Jr.

Jerry B. Mead Jr., 31, of 3400 Pefley died Saturday morning, April 24, 2004, in the emergency room at Labette County Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 27, 1972, in Parsons to Jerry B. Mead Sr. and Ceretha A. "Rita" (Troester) Mead. He grew up and attended elementary school at Altoona. He moved to Parsons and attended Parsons High School. He was a cement finisher and had worked for several local companies including Alexander Manufacturing, Advance Plastic Coating and Larsen & Son Concrete Co.

He attended the Church of the Nazarene in Parsons.

He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his children. He was a Pittsburg Steelers fan.

He married Lisa Long on Aug. 22, 1991, in Parsons. They were divorced.

Survivors include one son, Bryson D. Mead of Collinsville, Okla.; one daughter, Lindsay M. Mead; Collinsville, Okla.; his mother, Ceretha A. "Rita" Rettmann of the home; a foster brother, Keith Bateman of the home; a foster sister, Amber Speck of Pittsburg; maternal grandparents, Larry and Barbara Troester of Parsons; several aunts and uncles including Terry Troester of Parsons and Christy "Aunt Sis" Stephens of Parsons; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1973, a daughter, Kacia Lauree, his paternal grandparents, Hester and Jim Mead, and an uncle, Gene Troester in 1995.

The service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at East Bethany Cemetery with the Rev. Mark Koch officiating. Friends may call at their convenience at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home.

Memorials to and education fund for his children may be left at or mailed to the funeral home, 405 Main, Parsons.

Ann V. Mingel

Ann V. Mingel, 97, a longtime Parsons resident, died at 11:13 a.m. Thursday, June 19, 2003, at the Good Samaritan Center.

She was born Oct. 25, 1905, in Humeston, Iowa, to Miles A. and Rachel Isobelle (Ruthledge) Evans. She grew up and attended schools in Iowa. After graduating from Humeston High School in 1923, she attended Iowa State Teachers College.

She married George E. Mingel on Oct. 5, 1932, in Hot Springs, S.D. They lived in Iowa before moving to Leavenworth in the mid-1930s. In June 1943, they moved to Parsons. He preceded her in death on Sept. 18, 1952.

She worked at the Kansas Ordnance Plant during World War II and the Korean War. She was later employed as a seamstress at the former Broderick Co. for many years until her retirement.

She had attended the former First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed quilting and being with her grandchildren.

Survivors include three daughters, Dixie Aldridge and her husband, James, of Parsons, Nancy Williams and her husband, Jerry, of La Cygne, and Mary Lou Kounter and her husband, Nick, of Alamogordo, N.M.; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by four brothers and a sister.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Oakwood Cemetery with the Rev. Leroy Foreman officiating. Friends may call at their convenience at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Operation Bright Touch and may be left at the funeral home.

Leola F. Mitchell

EDNA - Leola Fern Mitchell, 83, of Edna died Monday morning, Feb. 2, 2004, at Alterra Sterling House in Coffeyville.

She was born Sept. 7, 1920, in Copan, Okla., to Orlando and Minnie (Burges) Jones. She graduated from high school in Copan in 1937.

She married Warren Perry Mitchell on Nov. 19, 1937, in Dewey, Okla. They moved to Coffeyville and then to Edna in 1946. He survives of the home.

She had been employed by Kansas Army Ammunition Plant at Parsons and later at Electra Manufacturing Co. in Independence.

Other survivors include one son, Tommy Mitchell of Parsons; three daughters, Darlene Rutter of Fort Myers, Fla., Paula Martek of North Port, Fla., and Jo Kinzie and her husband, Brian, of Edna; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Margie Mulliken of Bartlesville, Okla.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul, Arthur and Schrader.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Ford-Wulf-Bruns Colonial Chapel in Coffeyville with the Rev. Fred Wooldridge officiating. Burial will be in Robbins Cemetery west of Coffeyville. Friends may call until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, where family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Kenneth Montee

CHEROKEE - Kenneth "Coach" Montee, 72, of Cherokee died at 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at Medicalodge South nursing home after a short illness. He had been at the nursing home for one day.

He was born July 30, 1931, in West Mineral to Percy and Laura (Hughes) Montee. He attended area schools.

He married Maxine Goodpasture on June 15, 1990, in Cherokee. She survives in Pittsburg.

He was employed by the city of Cherokee in the maintenance department for 30 years, retiring in 1990.

He was a member of United Methodist Church of Cherokee.

Other survivors include nine sisters, Barbara Humble of rural Cherokee, Judy Klodt of Cherokee, Eleanor Holloway of El Dorado, Lucille Church of Shawnee, Peggy Kaeberle of Olathe, Nancy Simpson of Lenexa, Lana Loftus of Kansas City, Mo., Pat Favero of Independence and Joan Haefling of Richardson, Texas; five step-daughters, Mary Jo Walker and Vivian Lee, both of Bison, Lola Dick of Winterhaven, Ariz., Debra Cockran of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Sandy Hartman of Lincoln, Neb.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Albert Montee, and a sister, Betty Tilley.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Weir with the Rev. Dale Houghton officiating. Burial will be in Cherokee City Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m.

Memorials to United Methodist Church of Cherokee may be left at the funeral home.

Edward D. Moses

BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. - Edward Dell "Eddie" Moses, 52, of Blue Springs, Mo., died Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, at his residence in Blue Springs.

He was born Dec. 22, 1950, in Neosho County to Cecil and Alice E. (Williams) Moses. He attended school in Erie and graduated from Erie High School in 1968.

He served in the U.S. Marines for three years, where he was a crew chief in a helicopter squadron. He lived in the Kansas City area after his military service.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Erie, where he was baptized in 1961. He was a member of Blue Springs American Legion.

Survivors include three half-brothers, Tim Edwards of Erie, Gary Edwards of El Dorado and Dan Edwards of Grand Prairie, Texas; two sisters, Cheryl Shrum of Chanute and Janet Warren of Asbury, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at East Hill Cemetery in Erie with the Rev. Tim McCoy officiating. The George L. Hendricks Post No. 102 of the American Legion in Erie will conduct a graveside ceremony. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Erie, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Memorials may be made to George L. Hendricks Post No. 102, American Legion, of Erie.
