born in Pocahontas, Mississippi, the 27th day of November 1924, Martha
L. Anderson, was the first of the ten offspring of Elbert and Helen Cole.
Martha attended Cedar Grove High School near their home in the
country, some 15 miles outside Jackson. As a youth growing up in the
Cotton belt of the southern states, she was well acquainted with the
difficult work of growing, cultivating and picking cotton.
In addition, Martha learned to sew quite well, a skill which she utilized
greatly after having her own family. She took piano lessons before her
mom passed and later played the piano for Sunday school after
marriage. She also received her cosmetology license at Lula Belle
Beauty Salon.
Martha attended Jackson State College for two years, studying late many
nights in the library. Her love of reading spanned the extent of her life. It
was known to many that in her latter years, she especially loved to read
biographies and accounts of the men and women of faith, miracles and
spiritual revivals of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Sixty years ago, in Los Angeles, California, one week before Christmas,
Martha Cole was joined in holy matrimony to Samuel H. Anderson, a God-
honoring U.S. Army veteran from Weir, Kansas. God gave them seven
boys and three girls in the town of Pacoima, where they settled in the
San Fernando Valley. Since both of them knew the Lord Jesus as
Savior, they taught their children, raising them in the fear and admonition
of the Lord.
Five years following the graduation of the youngest child from high
school, Samuel and Martha moved to Weir, Kansas to continue their post-
retirement life. Three years following the move, Martha survived her
husband and chose to continue living in Kansas until 2006, when she
came to Los Angeles to live with her eldest daughter and son-in-law.
Early Christmas morning, December 25, 2009, Martha Anderson,
affectionately known as “Mama Anderson,” made the transition from this
life into Glory.
She was a praying mother who exercised great faith in the Lord’s ability
to heal and deliver bodies and minds, to transform people’s hearts and
impossible situations. Her husband and children witnessed many
miracles the Lord performed, as the result of Mama Anderson holding on
in faith and thanking the Lord before she could see the answers to her
prayers. Such is the legacy of tenacity of faith she leaves to her surviving
offspring.
Preceding her in death are; her husband, Samuel; a daughter, Bekie;
and sons, Nathan and Alexander; one sister and four brothers.
Surviving family include: her children; Dr. Anthony Anderson of Peach
Springs, Arizona; Marian Thomas of Los Angeles, California; Major
Joseph Anderson of Baltimore, Maryland; Rebekah Martin of Oceanside,
California; James Anderson of Pacoima, California, Timothy Anderson of
Mission Hills, California; John Anderson of Richmond, Virginia; fifteen
grandchildren and four great grandchildren; four sisters: Nellie Scott and
Bessie Jones of Jackson, Mississippi; Helen Royland and Mary Posey of
Chicago, Illinois; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends,
neighbors and fellow believers in Christ.

Methodist Church in Weir with the family officiating. Burial will follow at
