WEIR — Don Cashion 72, of Weir, Kansas, died Sunday, August 23,
2009 at his home after a long battle with Pancreatic Cancer.
Don was born July 7, 1937, in Campbell Mo., son of the late Grover and
Alva (Tucker) Cashion. Don had 2 brothers and 5 sisters.
He was a husband, dad and papa. Don also was a Telecommunications
employee working for FairPoint Communications. He served his country
in the Korean War and later in the Air Force Reserves. He was a avid
Cardinal fan and fisherman.
On August 3, 1955 he was united in marriage to Mary A. Whitehead in
Flint, MI. They moved to Weir in 1976, from St. Louis, MO.
Survivors include his wife Mary of the home, four children, Cindy and
husband Paul Boeger, St. Louis, Mo., Pam and husband Kurtis Hohl,
Weir, Don Jr. and wife Sandy Cashion, Broken Arrow, Okla., Tim and wife
Lana Cashion, Weir. Three grandchildren Zakea Boeger, Sam Hohl and
Katelyn Cashion.
He was preceded in death by parents, one brother, two sisters and one
granddaughter.
Graveside services will be 11:00 am, Saturday, August 29, 2009 at the
Hosey HillCemeterywith Rev. Dan Muter officiating. Family will receive
friends on, Saturday, from 9:00 am - 11:00 am at Bath-Naylor Funeral
Home in Weir. The procession to thecemeterywill leave the funeral
home at 10:45 am. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Pancreatic
Cancer Research Fund; these may be left at or mailed to the funeral home.

FRONTENAC — Shirley Lana Zortz, 63 of Frontenac died at 2:30 p.m.
Friday August 21, 2009 at the Mount Carmel Regional Medical Center in
Pittsburg.
She was born September 11, 1945 in Garnett, KS the daughter of Elmer
Allen and Maggie (Daniels) Taylor. She lived most of her life in Kansas.
Shirley received her BS and MS degrees in Education both completed
from Pittsburg State University.
She married
Richard Lee Zortz in 1964 in Frontenac. They were later
divorced and he preceded her in death in 2006.
Shirley worked in a variety of places in Kansas, her professions included
school teacher, hairdresser, Kansas Pipe fitters Union, Kansas Legal
Services, H & R Block and the Census Bureau.
Survivors include a son Bryan Zortz and wife Amy of Weir; a brother
Rodney Taylor of Arkansas; 4 Grandchildren-Skylar Zortz, Austin
Rogers, Sydney Zortz and Jacob Zortz. She was preceded in death by
her parents.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday August 27th at the Bath-Naylor
Funeral Home in Weir with Reverend Jamie Tickel officiating. The family
will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time on Thursday. Burial of
cremains will be at a later date in the Highland Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Southeast Kansas Humane

OLATHE — Josephine Evelyn Saia 89, of Olathe, KS formally of
Pittsburg, KS died 7:15 a.m. Friday August 21, 2009 at Hillsdale Village
Nursing Home of DeSoto, KS following a long illness.
Josephine was born December 20, 1919 in Coffeyville, KS the daughter
of Archie and Ada Lorene (Pickering) Sweet. She grew up in Pittsburg,
KS graduating from Pittsburg High School. She was a homemaker most
of her life but later worked in children’s retail clothing at Helen’s Shop
and Little’s in Pittsburg, KS.
On September 7, 1940 Josephine married
Vincent Saia in Girard, KS; he
preceded her in death in May 28, 1984.
She was a member of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Olathe, KS
and was active in the Alter Society in Franklin, KS prior to moving to
Olathe. Family was the most important thing in her life.
Survivors include children Barbara James of Lenexa, KS, Brenda Barbieri
and husband Tom of Brandon, Fla, Tom Saia and wife Suzanne of
Arkansas City, KS, and Kathy Perkins and husband Ron of Webb City,
MO; 8 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son in-law Jerry J.
James. Josephine is the last of the Sweet family- 3 sisters, twin brother
and sister; last survivor of the Saia family which included 13 brother and
sisters and spouses.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday August 25, 2009 at the
Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Fr. Thomas Stroot as
celebrant. Burial will follow at the Garden of MemoriesCemeteryin
Pittsburg, KS. Family will receive friends from 9-10 a.m. Tuesday August
25, 2009 at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers the family
ask expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorials to the Our Lady

Michael Paul Allen, 51 of Galena, KS died at 8:05 p.m. Tuesday August
18, 2009 at his home in Galena.
He was born September 17, 1957 in Columbus, KS the son of Paul and
Dorothy (Zwahlen) Allen. He lived most of his life in the southeast
Kansas area. He attended schools in Columbus and graduated in 1976
from Joplin High School.
Michael worked as a welder for Able Body in Joplin. He was a member
of the Galena Elks Lodge.
Survivors include his companion Phyllis Sizemore of the home; his
mother Dorothy Brock of Branson, MO, his father and step mother Paul
and Dorothy Allen of Galena; a brother Steve Allen and wife Sally of
Springfield, MO; 2 sisters Patty Sutton and husband Mark of Wagoner,
OK, Kathy Denny and husband Don of Columbus; 2 nieces Corrie
Fenscke and Haleigh Denny, a nephew Casey Sutton, 2 Great-nieces
Kallie and Kenna Fenscke; 2 steps-sons Steve and Dustin Blazer and 2
step-grandsons Isaac and Nicholas Blazer.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday August 21, 2009 at the First
Christian Church in Columbus with Associate Pastor Jeff Wary officiating.

Thelma L. Peterson, 87 of Girard, KS died at 2:07 a.m. Tuesday August
18, 2009 at the Mount Carmel Regional Medical Center in Pittsburg.
She was born July 31, 1922 in Fostoria, OH; the daughter of John Willis
and Della Mae (Shup) Bower. She had been a resident of the Southeast
Kansas area since 2007 moving from Oklahoma.
Thelma married
Glenn Arthur Peterson on May 26, 1972 in Inglewood,
CA; he preceded her in death.
She was a waitress and homemaker. She was a member of the
American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries.
Survivors include 2 daughters Ruth Ellis of Girard; Gerrie Jared of
Dolan Springs, AZ; a son Edward Russell of Orange, CA; 6
Grandchildren, 7 Great-grandchildren and 1 Great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 4 brothers and 4
sisters.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday August 20, 2009 at the
Crossroads Baptist Church at 700 S. Hwy 7 in Girard with Pastor Mike
Buckamneer officiating.

Joe J. Deckard, 87 of Pittsburg, KS died at 5:28pm, Tuesday, August
18, 2009 at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center in Pittsburg.
Joe was born November 16, 1921 in Pittsburg, KS to Joe Leroy and
Lena (Schmidt) Deckard. He attended area schools, graduating from
Pittsburg High School. He then entered the CCC for three years prior to
joining the service.
Joe served his country in the United States Navy during WWII from
1942-1945.
On December 22, 1945, in Chicopee, KS, he married
Frances Ann
Gilmore. She survives of the home.
Joe worked at South Western Bell Telephone Company for 38 years,
as a telephone repeater man, retiring in 1984.
Joe was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in
Pittsburg. He belonged to AARP; longtime member of the Benjamin Fuller
American Legion Post #64 of Pittsburg. He belonged to the Pioneer
Telephone group. He loved to hunt especially Elk. He drove elderly folks
to the airport and hospitals. Joe loved to help others around him.
Additional survivors include his sons David J. Deckard and wife Becky
of Wichita, KS and Mark S. Deckard and wife Stephanie of Pittsburg, KS
and daughter Judith Ann Wingebach and husband Bernie of Arma, KS;
along with 3 grandchildren, 3 step great-grandchildren and 3 step-
great-great grandchildren.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; Brothers Frank, John and
Roy Deckard; Sister Inez Maier.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00am, Friday, August 21, 2009 at
Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg with Fr. Thomas Stroot
as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Garden of MemoriesCemeteryin
Pittsburg where the Benjamin Fuller American Legion Post #64 will have
flag folding ceremonies. The family will receive friends from 7pm until
8pm on Thursday at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home of Pittsburg, where a
rosary will be recited at 7:00pm. Friends may call the funeral home after
2pm on Thursday.
