JOPLIN, Mo. — George W. McCormick 87, of Joplin, MO passed away 8:
30 a.m., Tuesday July 7, 2009 at his home following a short illness.
George was born March 28, 1922 in Carona, KS the son of George A.
and Lula Spencer McCormick. He attended area schools.
On September 12, 1942 he married
Alma Morris in Fredonia, KS; she
preceded him in death on February 7, 1980. In March of 1981 he
married Georgia Rice in Miami, OK; she preceded him in death on
December 30, 1999. He was a boilermaker in WWII with an EAME
Companion Medal with four Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct Medal and a
WWII Victory Medal. He served in Normandy, Northern France and
Rhineland Central Europe.
He worked in food processing for Safeway Foods for 25 years. He
previously worked as a miner in Picher, OK and Frisco Railroad. He was
of the Christian Faith and a member of the Crestline Baptist Church. He
also loved Flea Markets, his dogs and most of all his family.
Survivors include his children Pamela Perrice and husband Ron of Mt.
Vernon, MO; Robert Rice of Webb City, MO; Carolyn Vediz and husband
Eggie of Pittsburg, KS; Jim Rice and wife Lois of Joplin, MO; Denny Rice
and wife Debbie of Mulberry, KS; sister Martha Dobkins of Columbus, KS;
15 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Frank McCormick and
Theodore “Dugan” McCormick; sisters Anna Buergin, Agnes Barrett and
Susie Baird.
Memorial Services will be 11 a.m., Friday July 10, 2009 at the Bath-
Naylor Funeral Home in Columbus, KS with Rev. Paul Duncan officiating.
Military Flag Folding Ceremonies will take place following the service.
Burial of remains will take place at a private date in ParkCemeteryin
Columbus, KS. In lieu of flowers the family ask expressions of sympathy
be in the form of memorials to the Joplin Humane Society. Friends may

SCAMMON — Lorene M. Jameson, 85 of Scammon, died at 6:10 pm
Monday, July 6, 2009 at the Freeman Health Systems Hospital in Joplin
following a short illness.
She was born January 5, 1924 in rural Pittsburg the daughter of Claude
and Nina (Spillman) McDaniel. She attended area schools and
graduated from the Cherokee High School; she later attended and
graduated from Pittsburg State University with a bachelor’s degree in
Elementary Education.
On January 25, 1943 she was united in marriage to George J. Jameson
in Columbus, KS; he preceded her in death on May 6, 1988.
Lorene worked as a pre-school teacher for the SEK-CAP Head Start in
Scammon for over 28 years.
Church membership was held at the First Baptist Church of Cherokee.
Survivors include nine children: George Junior Jameson, Jr. of Mulvane,
KS, Danny Dean Jameson of Roseland, KS, James “Blackey” Jameson of
Cherokee, Beverly Coleen Joyce of Pittsburg, Michael Gene Jameson of
Stippville, Tony Kent Jameson of Lexington, OH, Debbie Ann Wydick of
Weir, Lisa G. Sullivan of Riverton and Tina Lorene Wydick of Roseland;
two sisters Darlene Copenhaver of Pittsburg and Pauline Marshal of El
Paso, TX, 31 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great
grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, an infant son, an
infant granddaughter and a grandson.
Funeral services will be 10 am Friday July 10, 2009 at the Bath-Naylor
Funeral Home in Weir with Rev. Jason Knight officiating. Burial will follow
in the Cherokee City Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the funeral
home from 7-8 pm Thursday.
The family will be at the home of Debbie Wydick 2480 NE
Coal Valley Rd, Weir, KS. Services are under the direction of the Bath-
Naylor Funeral Home Weir, KS.
Catherine Ann "Katie" Simmons, 71 of McCune, KS died at 2:30pm,
Friday, July 3, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Society in Parsons, KS.
Katie was born July 10, 1937 in Iola, KS to James Fredrick and Bertha
Madeline (Dutton)Weeks. She attended area schools.
In November of 1983, she married
H.L. Simmons, in Vinita, OK.
Katie was an LPN for many years, working for various nursing facilities.
Survivors include her daughters, Gail Duncan of Galena, OH and Sheila
Loveland of Wichita, KS; son Edward Head of McCune; a brother and
four sisters; along with six grandsons Damian Head, Andrew Duncan,
James Head, Alex Head, Cory Loveland and Lucas Duncan.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband H.L.
Simmons in November 2007.
Private family inurnment will be at a later date.

ARCADIA — Charles Henry Albert Pfaff, 72 of Arcadia, KS, died
Thursday, July 2, 2009 from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle
accident.
He was born September 29, 1936 in Chicago, IL the son of Perry and
Hazel Pfaff.
He entered the US Navy on July 2, 1954 and was honorably discharged
on September 24, 1957.
In 1967 he was united in marriage to Janice Faye Hawn, they later
divorced.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints in
Pittsburg.
Charles was a Union Carpenter.
Survivors include a son Charles Sherman Pfaff of Phoenix, AZ a
daughter Kristine Caruthers of Arcadia, KS; 3 step-children Kenneth
Carden of Phoenix, AZ, Laura Owens of Arma, Greg Carden of Wichita; 3
grandchildren Cole Pfaff and, Colby Caruthers both of Arcadia and Kayla
Pfaff of Phoenix as well as eight other grandchildren and eight great
grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. on Friday July 10, 2009 at the Church
of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints with Bishop Corin Wilde officiating.
Burial will be at the Ft. Scott National Cemetery. Family will receive
friends at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home from 7-8 p.m. on Thursday
evening. Flag folding and military rites will be given by the Ft. Scott

PITTSBURG — Roberta Lee Cicero, 68 of Pittsburg, passed away,
Tuesday, June 30, 2008 at her home. She had been in failing health
since 2004.
She was born March 31, 1941 in Eureka, KS the daughter of Ottie and
Virginia (Pennington) Smith. She attended area schools and graduated
from Pittsburg High School with the Class of 1959; she then went on to
the Mt. Carmel School of Nursing where she graduated in 1962.
On August 22, 1964 she was united in marriage to Richard Cicero at
Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac; he survives her of the home.
Roberta was raised by her grandparents Walter and Clara Pennington
and an aunt Ruby Dyke, they all precede her in death.
After graduating from nursing school she started her surgical nursing
career at Mt. Carmel Hospital, known today as Mt. Carmel Regional
Medical Center. She dearly loved taking care of her patients, which she
did for nearly thirty years.
Survivors include a son Rick Cicero of Frontenac, and a daughter Renee
Cicero of Pittsburg, Five grandchildren Cody and Damian Cicero of
Pittsburg, Angel, Amanda and Anna Cicero of Frontenac and a great
grandson Gabe of Pittsburg.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 2 p.m. Friday, July 3, 2009 at the Sacred
Heart Catholic Church with Fr. Robert Spencer as Celebrant. Burial will
follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Parish rosary will be recited
at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church where the family
will receive friends after the rosary. Friends may also call at their
convenience after 3 p.m. at the Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac.

PITTSBURG — Edwin L. “Epp” Payne, 85, of Pittsburg, died at 3:55 p.m.
Monday, June 29, 2009 at the St. John’s Regional Medical Center
following a short illness.
He was born February 21, 1924 in Pittsburg, KS the son of Lee L. and
Martha (Lee) Payne. He attended area schools and graduated from the
Pittsburg High School with the Class of 1941.
He was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Navy with the Navy Band.
On May 15, 1943 he was united in marriage to Virginia “Lala” Morey in
Pacific Grove, CA; she survives him of the home.
Epp was the owner & operator of Pittsburg Transfer and Storage
Company in Pittsburg from 1951 until his retirement on March 1, 1990.
He was a member of the Benjamin Fuller American Legion Post #64 in
Pittsburg.
Additional survivors include a son Mike (Kay) Payne of Overland Park,
KS; 4 daughters: Mary (Mike) Gilmore of Elkhart, KS Christine White of
Wichita, KS, Barbara (Dave) Mathews of Lone Tree, CO and Lee Ann
(Ron) Yartz of Overland Park, KS; 11 Grandchildren: John Gilmore, Julie
Polk, Matthew Payne, Carrie Henderson, Emily Burgard, Caitlin White,
Cameron Mathews, Erin Mathews, Greg Yartz, Lindsay Yartz and Megan
Yartz; 11 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Ruth Denison.
Funeral services will be 10 am, Thursday, July 2, 2009 at the Bath-Naylor
Funeral home with Fr. Thomas Stroot officiating. Burial will follow in the
Garden of Memories Cemetery. A rosary will be recited at the funeral
home at 7 p.m. Wednesday where the family will receive friends following
the rosary. Memorials may be left to Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Fund
and/or The Benjamin Fuller American Legion Post 64; these may be left at
or mailed to the funeral home. Military Rites and Flag folding will be given by the
