KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Travis Lee Newton, 35 of Kansas City, MO
formerly of Pittsburg died Friday June 26, 2009 at his home in Kansas
City following a sudden illness.
He was born September 17, 1973 in Pittsburg, KS the son of Roscoe and
Karen (Hallacy) Newton. He attended St. Mary’s Elementary School, was
a 1992 graduate of Colgan High School and received his bachelor’s
degree in accounting in 1996 from Pittsburg State University.
Travis worked in the field of accounting for several different companies;
he lived in Reno, NV for a brief time and worked for Harley Davidson;
while living in Kansas City he worked for Black & Veech accounting firm,
the City of Kansas City and most recently Interstate Brands Corporation.
He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
Survivors include his father and step-mother Roscoe and Dana Newton
of Pittsburg; 2 brothers Zachary Newton of Pittsburg, Seth Newton of
Joplin, MO; a sister Abby Newton of Pittsburg a nephew Adrian Newton,
his maternal grandparents Jim and Betty Jo Peak of Girard and
numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his
mother Karen Newton, a brother Kelly Michael Newton; maternal
grandparents James and Ella Marie Hallacy and his paternal
grandparents Roscoe and Lula Belle Newton.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday July 3rd at Our Lady of
Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg with Father Thomas Stroot as
celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’sCemeteryin Pittsburg. A
prayer vigil service will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bath-Naylor Funeral
Home in Pittsburg where the family will receive friends following the vigil
until 8 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the Our Lady of Lourdes
Catholic Church Memorial Fund or to the American Heart Association.

WEIR — George J. Martisus, 90 of Weir, KS died at 1:10 a.m., June 24,
2009 at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center in Pittsburg, KS.
George was born October 14, 1918 in Alton, ILL. He was raised in the
Catholic Children’s Home in Alton, where he attended school.
George married
Bena Maria Fragnella in Reno, NV. She preceded him in
death January 3, 2006.
George was a carpenter for many years. He was a proud member of the
Carpenters Union.
George is survived by his nephew and nieces and great nephew and
great-nieces.
George was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters.
Private family inurnment will take place at a later date in St. Bridget’s
Cemetery in Scammon, KS.

RADLEY — Gary M. Arne, 53 of Radley died at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday
June 24 at his home.
He was born August 30, 1955 in Washington the son of Gary Bruhn
Charlotte Barnes. He had been a resident of the area for nearly 30
years moving here from Tacoma, WA.
Gary was a Vietnam era veteran serving his country in the United States
Air Force, being honorably discharged in 1977.
He was a laborer working for different manufacturing companies both in
Washington and Kansas.
Gary participated in the Relay For Life, he enjoyed his music and playing
guitar.
Survivors include 4 sons-Jay Adams of Lawrence, Zach Adams of Girard,
Nick Adams of Hawaii, Steve Arne of Humboldt; a daughter Chacie Arne
of Georgia; caregiver and best friend Donna Gitner; his father and step-
mother Gary and Diane Bruhn; a brother Don Arne, 2 sisters Sue and
Kelly all of Washington and 6 Grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by his mother.
According to his wishes Gary has been taken for cremation. A memorial
dinner will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday June 27th at the St. John’s
Lutheran Church located at 304 W. 3rd St. in Pittsburg. Arrangements

PITTSBURG — Alpheus (A.W./Bill) Webster, 94, passed away Monday
June 22, 2009 at Cornerstone Village in Pittsburg, KS
A.W. was born May 5, 1915 to Sylvester (Vess) and Emley Scrogham
Webster near Nevada, MO. He was married
to Ruth Fry Webster who
was deceased February 16, 1998. He is survived by his sister, Emma
Webster Carter of Springfield, MO, a daughter and son-in-law, Billie Raye
Webster and George Pitzer of Pittsburg, KS, grandsons Grant, Jeff, and
Mark, their wives and eight grandchildren.
A private memorial service for the family was held at the Evergreen
Cemetery in Ft. Scott, KS. Arrangements and services under the
direction of Bath-Naylor Funeral Home of Pittsburg, KS.
PITTSBURG — Vergil L. Phillips Sr., 70, went home to be with the Lord
on Saturday June 20, 2009 at the Golden Living Center following a long
illness.
He was born June 24, 1938 in Pittsburg, KS to Maurice and Audrey
(Butler) Phillips. He attended Pittsburg schools and graduated from
College Heights in 1956. He also attended refrigeration school at
Pittsburg State University.
He married
Carol McAfee, they later divorced, he then married
Shirley
Worthington, and she survives.
Vergil was a member of the Independent Bible Baptist Church in Pittsburg
where he was a trustee.
He was an elevator operator for the Professional building. Later he
worked for Sheward Chevrolet. Other occupations include; Melvin Lamb
Service Station, Kautzhman Plumbing, worked for George Woods, Melton
Rhumes Plumbing and Heating, Trent Enterprises, then owned and
operated Phillips Plumbing & Heating until he retired.
Vergil was a Bleacher Creature volunteer through the YMCA for the past
13 years; he coached Little League Baseball for several years, and was
a Red Coat at Mt. Carmel for two years.
He is survived by 1 son Vergil L. Phillips Jr. and wife Christy of Kansas
City, MO; 3 daughters, Debbie Fletcher and husband Doug of Joplin,
MO, and Louise McFarland and husband Rob of Pittsburg, KS and
Mauricea Hockman and spouse Chris of Joplin, MO; 4 step-daughters
Jeanne Davidson and husband Kenny, Sherrie Johnson and husband
Steve, Suzanne Hawkins and husband Terry and Janice Myers and
husband Brent; 1 brother Charles “Butch” Phillips and wife Dorothy of
Joplin, MO, 2 sisters Audrey “Tudie” of Kansas City, and Nancy Sheets of
Mulberry, KS, 19 grandchildren Scott & Billy Miller, William Hutchinson,
Virginia Allen, Samantha & Richard Kraft, Stephanie Phillips, Michael &
Elizabeth McFarland, Jack & Jennifer Johnson, Joel, Kyle & Megan
Herron, Eric & Janelle Pew, Weston & Shea Widner and Jacey Myers, 6
great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Johnny Phillips and
Maurice Phillips Jr., Sister Barbara Montee of Pittsburg, 3 nephews, and
1 niece.
Funeral services will be 7 pm, Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at the Bath-
Naylor Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Fryer officiating. The family will
receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday at 6 pm 1 hour prior
to the services.

WEIR — Raymond Allen Pope, 51 of Weir died on June 19, 2009 from
injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.
He was born December 1, 1957 in Pittsburg, KS the son of George
Raymond Pope and Billie West Goste.
On July 11, 1977 he was united in marriage to Debbie Smith in Pittsburg,
they later divorced.
Raymond worked as a mechanic for Smiths/Bates Auto Salvage, Smith
Cycle Center, Caruthers Auto Salvage and Castlegate.
Survivors include 2 sons Dennis Pope of Bellevue, CO, Dutch of
Pittsburg; 2 daughters Jenny Stevens of Pittsburg and Brenda Pope of
Pittsburg, Mother Billie Goste of Pittsburg, step-father Walter Hutchens of
Joplin, MO; brothers and sisters are Janice & Dick Collins of Girard,
Kathy and Ron Mishmash of Pittsburg, David Pope of Emporia, KS, Jeff
Pope of Pittsburg, Donna and Joe Merrill of Olathe, KS, Danny and
Cassie Pope of Pittsburg, Jimmy and Toni Hutchens of Pittsburg, Lisa
Mapes of LaHarp, KS, Tommy Hutchens of Pittsburg and John Hutchens
of Pittsburg, several grandchildren and 31 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father George Raymond Pope.
Funeral services will be 11 am, Thursday, June 25, 2009 at the Bath-
Naylor Funeral Home with Evangelist Aaron Williams officiating. The
family will receive friends from 10 am until service time.

Michael C. Burdick, of Pittsburg died at 2:10 a.m. Wednesday
October 13, 2010 at the St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin, MO.
He was born February 9 in Pittsburg, KS the son of Charles Clyde
and Wanda (Martinous) Burdick. He was a lifetime resident of Pittsburg.
He attended and was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School.
Michael was the manager of Crowell’s Food Service for over 30
years and worked at Wal-Mart for over 30 years.
He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church; the
Knights of Columbus, past president of the Pittsburg Jaycees part owner
of Mickey Finn’s Country Club and did numerous amounts of community
service.
Survivors include a brother Larry Finn of Pittsburg; aunts and
uncles-Mose and Kathy Martinous of Joplin, MO, Raymond and Betty
Martinous and Freda Wilson all of Pittsburg and numerous cousins. He
was preceded in death by his parents.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday October 15, 2010 at
Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg with Father Thomas
Stroot as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Highland Park Cemetery.
The parish rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Bath-Naylor
Funeral Home in Pittsburg where the family will receive friends following
the rosary until 7 p.m. The casket will remain closed at all times.
