Leta Jean Dill of Columbus, Kansas, went to be with the Lord and Savior
On Friday July 16th.
Leta Jean was born September 9, 1927 in Jonesboro, Arkansas. The
daughter of Byron and Anna Winkler.
She was united in marriage to Mervin Dill September 9th, 1947. They
made their home in Columbus.
Leta graduated from Columbus High School in 1946. She worked for the
County Treasure Office as Deputy District Clerk and was an Assistant
Branch Manager for Stanley Home Products. She considered her most
valued accomplishment as being the mother of four children.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Columbus, Kansas.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years; 3 Sons: J.B. Dill and wife
Dianne of Anderson, Missouri; David Dill and wife Patty of Maysville,
Missouri; Steve Dill and wife Libby of Cleburne, Texas. One daughter,
Melissa and husband Tom Behnke of London, England; Six
grandchildren: Jason Dill, Brandon Dill, Stacy Krueger, Kyle Dill, Newly
Dill, Daniel Dill, and 9 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Mary McDonald.
Funeral services will be 10 am, Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at the First
Baptist Church in Columbus, KS with Rev. Warren Stanton and Pastor
Gene Dewitt officiating. Burial will follow in the Park Cemetery. Family will
receive friends at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home from 6-7 pm Monday

Thelma June Hines 91, of Pittsburg , KS died 10:44am Wednesday July
7, 2010 at her home following an illness.
June was born May 16, 19 19 in Dover , OK the daughter of Edward and
Hazel (Nelson) Ester. She moved to this area in 1953.
She attended college in Bethany , OK and finished her degree at Friends
University of Central Kansas. She was a veteran of the Navy earning the
rank of 3rd Class.
On September 9, 19 50 she married
Ernest E. Hines in Wichita , KS ; he
preceded her in death on February 25, 1993 . She was a co-owner and
operator of Gregg Typewriter Company in Pittsburg , KS from
1953-1974. She also owned and operated rental property in Pittsburg ,
KS .
June was a member of the Victory Life Church . She was a member of
the Daughters of the American Revolution; loved quilting, reading,
gardening and history.
Survivors include children Sharon Compton and husband Tom of
Pittsburg, KS, Alan Hines and wife Duwana of Pittsburg, KS; siblings
Evelyn Graf of Sequin, TX, Donna and Jack Mayfield of Sequin, TX, Allen
Ester of Mulvane, KS; grandchildren Tonya Harris and husband Jason,
Cara Brooks, Stephanie and Jason Rhodes, Jonathan Hines and
Catherine; great-grandchildren Natalie, Kellie, Adam, John, JayCie and
Keaton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Alice Wentworth and
Robert Ester.
Funeral Services will be 10am Saturday July 10, 2010 at Bath-Naylor
Funeral Home in Pittsburg , KS with Rev. Donnie Talent officiating. Burial
will follow at NashvilleCemeteryin Nashville , MO. Family will receive
friends from 9-10am prior to the service at the funeral home. Friends

CHEROKEE, KS – Clarence H. Sherman, 85, of Cherokee, KS, died at
11:35 am, Wednesday, July 7, 2010, at the Sunset Manor Nursing Home
in Frontenac, KS of a long illness.
He was born April 6, 1925 at Coal Camp #12 in Gross, Kansas the
son of Otto Marion and Dortha Mildred Monk Sherman. He had been a
resident of Cherokee since 1966.
Mr. Sherman was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Army from
1943 to 1946.
He married
Mamie Bush on April 24, 1946 in Girard, KS. She
preceded in death on December 7, 2006.
Mr. Sherman was a butcher working at Hull and Dillion Packing
Company in Pittsburg for 22 years and Krestmier in Pittsburg for 5 years
prior to his retirement.
He was of the Baptist Faith and a member of the Cherokee
American Legion Post #35 and AARP. He was the Assistant Fire Chief
for the Cherokee Volunteer Fire Department for several years and has
served as a reserve police officer with the City of Cherokee.
Survivors include three daughters Jean Karnes and her husband
Dan of Cherokee; Sylvia Blythe of Cherokee; and Kalyn Thomas and
her husband Don of Wellsville, KS; a foster daughter Jane Johnson and
her husband Lee of Frontenac; one brother Charles Sherman and his
wife Maudie of Arcadia, KS. Five grandchildren, seven great-
grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a
granddaughter Lisa Clinton Perrino; a great-grandson Seun Afonja;
three brothers Frances Sherman, Harry Sherman, and Leonard
Sherman.
Memorial services will be 10 am Saturday at the Bath-Naylor
Funeral Home & Crematory in Weir, KS, with the Rev. Bud Clapp,
officiating. Inurnment will be in the Cherokee City Cemetery. Military
graveside rites will be given by the Cherokee American Legion Post
#35. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 pm Friday at the Bath-
Naylor Funeral Home & Crematory in Weir, Kansas. A memorial has
been established to the Cherokee Volunteer Fire Department or Hospice
Compassus in care of the funeral home.

Former Pittsburg resident, Mavis Jolene (Eichhorn) Thomas, 62, left this
earth Sunday, July 4, 2010 at her home in Leavenworth, KS after a long
bout with cancer.
Mrs. Thomas was born February 18, 1948 in Arma, KS to Frederick
“Fritzy” and Evelyn (Devlin) Eichhorn, she was the youngest of three
daughters. Mrs. Thomas attended Saint Mary’s High School in Pittsburg,
KS where she graduated in 1966, and was voted Miss Pittsburg in July of
1964. She later married
Samuel Thomas of Columbus, KS on April 1,
1967.
Mrs. Thomas was known for her many accomplishments, from coaching T-
ball and soccer teams to making and selling wood crafts at local craft
shows. She will be most remembered for her work as Administrative
Assistant with the local Salvation Army Corp office, earning her the
nickname of “Miss Mavis”. Her many duties there included supporting in
the application process for assistance of the community’s less fortunate;
gathering participants for the Salvation Army’s winter bell-ringing;
commodities distribution programs; organizing donations and distribution
of the Corp’s Angel Tree program; and most notably, organizing,
preparing and running the annual “Spring Fling” auction event, which
helped raise donations for the local Corp. Mrs. Thomas was also an avid
NASCAR enthusiast and almost never missed watching a race.
Mrs, Thomas is preceded in death by her grandparents, father,
Frederick Eichhorn and niece Diney Deruy. She is survived by her
husband, Sam Thomas, son, Doug Thomas, daughter Debra Thomas,
sisters Margie Eichhorn and Marie Brinkman, mother, Evelyn Eichhorn of
Sunset Manor and 5 grandchildren as well as various nieces and
nephews.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 3 P.M Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the
Davis Funeral Chapel, followed by a 3 P.M memorial service, Saturday at
the funeral chapel. Interment of ashes will be held at Highland Park
Cemetery in Pittsburg, KS on July 17, 2010 at 2 P.M, services conducted
by Bath –Naylor Funeral Chapel.
In lieu of flowers the family ask expressions of sympathy be in the form of

FRONTENAC — Maurice H. Gerwert, 86 of Frontenac, KS died at 3:
20pm, Friday, July 2, 2010 at Sunset Manor.
Maurice was born November 2, 1923 in Pittsburg, KS to Henry William
and Merle (Conley) Gerwert. He attended area schools, graduating from
St. Mary’s High School with the class of 1941.
Maurice served his country in the United States Army. While serving he
was airplane mechanic. He went overseas to the Philippines and Japan.
He was honorably discharged in 1946.
On March 7, 1959, in Miami, OK, he married
Jennie L. Butler. She
survives in Frontenac, KS.
Maurice was a meat cutter all of his life. He owned and operates G and B
Meat Supply in Pittsburg.
Additional survivors include his son Sam Gerwert of Ennis, TX and
daughter Peggy Gerwert of Mulberry, KS; brother Paul Gerwert of
Frontenac, KS along with 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Maurice was preceded in death by his parents.
Private inurnment will be at a later date.

PITTSBURG — Larry J. Hardman, 64, of Pittsburg, KS formerly of
Wellston, OH died, Thursday, July 1, 2010 at Landmark Hospital in
Joplin, MO following an extended illness.
He was born March 6, 1946 in North Carolina the son of John C. and
Genevieve (Mitchell) Hardman.
He served in the US Army and was awarded the Purple Heart on October
7th, 1966 and was also awarded the Parachute Badge with the 137th
Airborne on May 21st, 1965, as well as the Legionnaire Award, overseas
service bar, Vietnam service medal, National Defense service medal,
along with a Marksman Badge (Rifle and Pistol). He also received
Certification of Fish and Wildlife as well as military police training.
He was married
to Connie Clark in 1969. She preceded him in death in
1983. He worked over 42 years in Air Conditioning, Heating, Carnation
Milk, Pillsbury, and Sugarcreek.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #0371 of Wellston, Ohio
and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Survived by his daughter Melissa(Hardman) Humphreys, two brothers
Gary and Bill Hardman, sister Roxie Leary of Assouett, MA grandson
Kegan Humphreys, grand-daughter Camela Humphreys, step-son Jason
Scales, longtime companion Linda Lou Scales, and foster mother
Beatrice Frevele, three foster siblings Debbie Epperly, Gene and Donnie
Frevele. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Jim
Hardman and John Hardman, Jr.
Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at the Fort
Scott NationalCemeteryin Fort Scott, KS.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until 12:45 p.m.,
when the procession will leave for the cemetery.
