Ervin A. Myers, 89, longtime businessman of Columbus, passed away
peacefully at his home on Sept. 25, 2010. He had been in failing health
for several years.
He was born July 6, 1921 in Baxter Springs, KS, the son of Ervin
Christian and Eva (Leggett) Myers. He attended school in Columbus
and graduated from Cherokee County Community High School with the
class of 1939.
He was inducted into the U.S. Army Aug. 1, 1942 and Honorably
Discharged Dec. 13, 1945 as a Corporal. Ervin served in the Pacific
Theater in the Philippine Islands, New Guinea, and Occupied Japan
earning the American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal,
Philippine Liberation Ribbon, W.W. II Victory Medal, and Good Conduct
Medal.
After returning to Columbus he was a Prudential Insurance agent, Jewel
Tea salesman, and owner of Myers Tire Store for 60 years. He was a
member of the First United Methodist Church of Columbus and founding
member of the Cherokee Co. Ambulance Association, a member of the
Eastside Association, served on the Columbus City Council, and a
United States Veteran of Foreign Wars. Ervin's greatest pride was his
family and business devoting much time to both throughout his lifetime.
He was united in marriage to Mary (Maxine) McReynolds on Aug. 11,
1942 in Columbus, Kansas and celebrated 66 years of marriage before
she preceded him in death Mar. 14, 2009.
He is survived by two daughters Debra and husband Randy Froebe of
Columbus, JoAnn and husband Terry Kelley of Seminole, FL; a son
Dennis M. Myers of Columbus, six grandchildren: Larry and wife
Suzanne Kelley of Oklahoma City, OK, Kevin and wife Amy Kelley of St.
Petersburg, FL, Shelly and husband Roger Porter of Baxter Springs,
Darin and wife Shellie Myers of Baxter Springs, Nathan Froebe of
Lawrence, KS, Katrina Froebe of Columbus, KS, and nine great
grandchildren, Kaitlyn Kibel, Abby and Jacob Porter, Brittnie, Brandon,
and BreAnn Myers, Conor Kelley, Tsuneo and Sasha Kelley, one
brother Harold and wife Neva Myers of Amarillo, TX, one sister-in-law
Irene Myers of Columbus, and five nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Don Myers, sister
Lucille Bowers, and infant granddaughter Crystal Dawn Froebe.
Funeral services will be 10 am Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at the
Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Columbus with Rev. Dennis Johnson
officiating. Burial will follow in the Columbus City Cemetery. Family will
receive friends at the funeral home from 7-8 pm Tuesday evening.

Dorothy L. Barker, 81 passed away Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010 at
Medicalodge nursing home in Columbus, Ks.
She was born Dec. 2nd, 1928 in Wichita Ks. to Robert and Alice Sears
Swartzlander.
She was a member of the First Babtist Church in Columbus, Ks. She
was also part of the womans pilot organzation, and was a member of the
Sweet Adelines Barbershop Quartet in Wichita Ks.
On Aug. 20, 1946 she married
Robert Barker in Wichita. He survives.
Other survivors include 2 daughters, Jill Barker Lonngstaff and husband
Richard and Windy Elizabeth Barker. 7 grandchildren and 9 great-
grandchildren, & 1 Brother, Harold Swartzlander.
She was preceeded in death by her daughter Candace Susan Ewing, a
Great-grandchild, Caitlyn Rose O'Melia;, 1 sister and 1 brother.
Memorial Service will be at 12 o'clock, Saturday, Oct. 16th 2010 at the
First Baptist Church in Columbus, Ks., with Pastor Warren Stanton
officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Cremation arrangements made

PITTSBURG — Merlin B. Zollars Jr., 85, of Pittsburg died at 2:10 am,
Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at the Via Christi Hospital Pittsburg.
He was born July 25, 1925 in Pittsburg, the son of Merlin B. Zollars, Sr.
and Anna E. (Fichtner) Zollars. He attended Pittsburg schools and
graduated from the Pittsburg High School.
He was inducted into the U.S. Navy on February 24, 1944 and was
honorably discharged on May 15, 1946.
After his wartime service he attended Kansas State Teachers College
and graduated in 1950 with a Bachelors of Science Degree.
Merlin was a member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ
since 1941, Lifetime memberships include Phi Mu Alpha Symphonia Beta
Delta Chapter, VFW and American Legion Post #64 where he was a
past Chaplin. He was also a member of the local Masonic lodge.
Merlin was a school teacher for 25 years retiring in 1979.
Survivors include three cousins: Edna Anderson of White Oak, TX,
Georgia Hall of Springhill, KS and Velma Dawson of Merriam, KS, a
special friend and companion Marvellee Schneider of Pittsburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a cousin Carolyn Walden.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Thursday, September 23, 2010 at the
Bath-Naylor Funeral Home with Rev. Kevin Arensman officiating. Burial
will follow in the Highland Park Cemetery. Family will receive friends at
the funeral home from 7-8 pm Wednesday. The Benjamin Fuller
American Legion Post #64 will provide flag folding rites at the graveside.

Patricia A. Peak, 78 of rural Pittsburg, died at 9:25 pm, Monday, October
18th, 2010 at her home following a long illness.
She was born January 6, 1932, at Greenbush, KS the daughter of
Rolland Anthony and Ada Mary (Brazil) Peak.
She attended Mills School and graduated from Girard High School with
the class of 1950.
She married
Gene Tilley in Girard in 1965. He preceded her in death.
She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg
and St. Mary’s Altar Society. She was a former member of St. Michael’s
Church, Girard.
She was the Treasurer of the S. E. Kansas Symphony and a member of
the American Legion Post #64 Ladies Auxiliary.
She was employed by a prominent attorney in Girard for 30 years. She
and her husband owned and operated Gene’s Meat Market in Pittsburg
for many years. She later had a tax service in her home and retired from
it in 2004.
Survivors include two brothers, Paul Peak of Anderson, Missouri and Jim
Peak of Girard, two sisters, Catherine Baldwin of Coffeyville and Mary
Senecaut of Girard, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Loyd Peak, Charlie Peak,
and Bill Peak, and one sister Loretta Lallemand.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 am, Thursday, Oct 21, 2010 at Our
Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Fr. Thomas Stroot and Fr. Michael
Baldwin as concelebrants. Burial will follow in the Girard City Cemetery.
Rosary will be recited at 7 pm at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in

Lucille Louise James (Mama Lou) 97, of Frontenac, KS passed away
9:20pm Sunday October 17, 2010 at Via Christi Village Hospital in
Pittsburg, KS following a short illness.
Lucille was born June 17, 1913 in Brooklyn, New York the daughter of
Gottlieb and Cora (Hallock) Zeltman. She came to this community in
1997. In June of 1939 she married
Leslie James in Virginia; he
preceded her in death on March 23, 1972.
She belonged to the New Utrecht Dutch Reform Church in Brooklyn and
was very active in the choir and other charitable functions. Mama Lou
will be remembered by her whacky sense of humor and giving nature.
Survivors include her children John James and wife Candy of Pittsburg,
KS and Kirk James of Frontenac, KS; sister Winnifred Simmons of Ohio;
grandchildren Elizabeth Holcomb and husband Matthew, Leslie Gavin
and husband Kerry, Ben James, and Kali Christiansen and husband
Drew; 4 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and grand
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, siblings and
companion Leif Olsen.
Her final wishes were to be cremated and her ashes interred with her
husband in the New Utrecht Reformed ChurchCemeterywhere private
services will be held. In lieu of flowers the family ask expressions of
sympathy be in the form of memorials to the SEK Humane Society.

Michael C. Burdick, of Pittsburg died at 2:10 a.m. Wednesday
October 13, 2010 at the St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin,
MO.
He was born February 9 in Pittsburg, KS the son of Charles Clyde
and Wanda (Martinous) Burdick. He was a lifetime resident of Pittsburg.
He attended and was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School.
Michael was the manager of Crowell’s Food Service for over 30
years and worked at Wal-Mart for over 30 years.
He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church; the
Knights of Columbus, past president of the Pittsburg Jaycees part owner
of Mickey Finn’s Country Club and did numerous amounts of community
service.
Survivors include a brother Larry Finn of Pittsburg; aunts and
uncles-Mose and Kathy Martinous of Joplin, MO, Raymond and Betty
Martinous and Freda Wilson all of Pittsburg and numerous cousins. He
was preceded in death by his parents.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday October 15, 2010 at
Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg with Father Thomas
Stroot as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Highland Park Cemetery.
The parish rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Bath-Naylor
Funeral Home in Pittsburg where the family will receive friends following
the rosary until 7 p.m. The casket will remain closed at all times.
