Helen May Cannell 75, of Columbus, KS died Saturday April 14, 2012 at
her home following an illness.
Helen was born August 14, 1936 in Joplin, MO the daughter of Wayne
R. and Darlene (Bigbee) Murphy. She was a lifelong resident of the
area and attended area schools. She worked for AT&T as an
Executive Secretary in Joplin, MO for 35 years. Helen was a member of
the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Joplin, MO; a member of the
Southwestern Bell Telephone Pioneer Club in Joplin, MO; enjoyed
crocheting, interior decorating, spending time with her family and most
of all her grandkids.
Survivors include her children Kim Wayne Cannell and wife Pamela J. of
Walnut Grove, MO and Darla M. Ross and husband Terry of Columbus,
KS; grandchildren Adam Wayne Cannell, Tyler Justin Ross and
Chevelle Nicole Ross.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Robert Wayne
Murphy.
Memorial Services will be 6pm Friday April 20, 2012 at the Bath Naylor
Funeral Home in Columbus, KS with Rev. Dennis Johnson officiating.
Burial will be private at the Ozark Memorial ParkCemeteryin Joplin,
MO. In lieu of flowers the family ask expressions of sympathy be in the
form of memorials to the Riverton Friends Church Youth Program.

JoEllyn Baker 65, of Columbus, KS died 6:30pm Wednesday April 11,
2012 at National Health Care Center in Joplin, MO following an illness.
JoEllyn was born October 17, 1946 in Enid, OK the daughter of Wilmer
A. and Ina Lois (Walton) Brown. She has been a part of the Columbus
community since 1976. JoEllyn earned her B.S. in Nursing from
Pittsburg State University. She worked the longest at Mt. Carmel
Regional Medical Center in Pittsburg, KS, many families will remember
her most for her care of their loved ones at the area nursing homes
and the Cherokee County Ambulance; she was of the Baptist Faith;
enjoyed researching family genealogy; will be most remembered by her
love of her family and grandkids and helping out in the community.
Survivors include her children Tracy Tucker of Las Vegas, NV, Nathan
Gramm and wife Crystal of Springfield, MO, Lori Lloyd and husband
Louis of Weir, KS, Dale Beck of San Diego, CA, Stephen Lindsey of
Columbus, KS, Nancy Caldwell and husband Lonnie of Grand Prairie,
TX and Bradford Lindsey of Weir, KS; siblings DeAn Liles and husband
Barney, June Wollard and husband James and Lois Sterling; 20
grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A celebration of life is scheduled for May 19th 2012 from 2-6pm at
Lincoln Park in Pittsburg, KS; everyone is welcome. JoEllyn was
cremated according to her wishes. In lieu of flowers the family ask

Donald A. Blessent, 57, of Weir, KS, passed away unexpectedly at
his home on April 9, 2012. He was born July 18, 1954 in Pittsburg, KS
the son of Donald Lee and Rosa (Stovall) Blessent. He graduated from
Arma High school in 1972 and completed his Pipefitters Apprenticeship
in 1977. He was a member of Local 664 in Frontenac, KS and worked
throughout the US until July 2000 when he became employed by
Empire District Electric as a Maintenance Welder at the Asbury Plant.
In November 1974 he married
Marilyn Lawrence (Hadley) they later
divorced. On November 26, 1979 he married
Roxy Becker in
Westmoreland, KS; she survives of the home.
He was a member of Local 664 and a longtime member of the NRA.
His hobbies were making jewelry and knives, flint knapping, and
woodworking. He loved the outdoors, traveling, watching sports, and
enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. Most of all he loved spending
time with his kids and grandkids.
Additional survivors include a daughter: two sons: Will and Ethan
Blessent both of the home; Melissa McClintock and four grandchildren
Hunter Lyden, Harlie, Haygun and Hadlyn McClintock all of Carl
Junction, MO; Four Brothers: William, Michael and David Blessent all of
Arma and Joseph Blessent of Pittsburg; a sister Mary Ann Shull of
Franklin, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 14, 2012, at
12:30pm, at South Broadway Baptist Church, 1322 S. Broadway,
Pittsburg, KS. with Rev. Dan Moss officiating. Online condolences may

Loretta H. Allen 90, of Pittsburg, KS died 2:07am Sunday April 1, 2012

Bette June Humbard, 87, of Pittsburg, KS died at 10:40 am Tuesday
March 27, 2012 at Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, KS following a short
illness.
Bette was born July 19, 1924 in Mulberry, KS the daughter of Walker
William and Jessie (Parsons) Graham. She grew up west of Pittsburg
and graduated from Girard High School. She worked and attended
classes at Kansas State Teacher’s College following high school. On
November 19, 1946 she married
Merle Gene Humbard in Pittsburg, KS;
he preceded her in death on March 3, 2004.
From 1959 until 1968 she resided in Mission, KS, raising her family.
She and Merle moved back to Pittsburg to develop Countryside
subdivision. She did administrative support for Humbard Construction
and later Countryside Realty. Bette enjoyed reading and playing
bridge. She also enjoyed women’s golf and other activities at the
YMCA. She was very active and pursued many other interests through
her lifetime. For the last several years she has resided in an apartment
in Via Christi Village.
Survivors include her children Sue Ellen Roit of Parsons, KS, Sarah
Humbard and husband Jon Hellebust of Albuquerque, NM and John
“Jay” Humbard and wife Robin of Pittsburg, KS. She had 13
grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She had several close nieces
and nephews whose presence in her life was treasured. She was
preceded in death by her siblings Orville Graham, John “Jack” Graham,
Vera Monahan and Mary Mattix.
Cremation has taken place and a private ceremony will be scheduled.
In lieu of flowers the family asks expressions of sympathy be in the form
of memorials to the Salvation Army or the Chicopee Community Center.

Patricia Aline (Culver) Hay, of Lawrence, Kansas, Died Wednesday,
March 21, 2012 at 12:40 PM, at The Groves Health Center in
Independence, Missouri, at age 85.
She was born October 8, 1926, in Pittsburg, Kansas, the daughter of
Roy Walker Culver and Ida Beatrice (Gahms) Culver. She graduated
from Pittsburg High School.
She was united in marriage on May 30, 1944 to Edward Mac Hay, in
Pittsburg. She raised two daughters, Kristie Lynn (Hay) Frike and Kim
Ann (Hay) Murry. She was a devoted stay at home Mom, most of the
years her girls were at home.
She began working at Penny’s in 1968. Later she took a position with
ACME Dry cleaners in the Lawrence, Hillcrest Shopping Center. She
worked there for 8 years. In 1978, she worked at Janell’s Dress Shop in
downtown Lawrence, and stayed there for 4 ˝ years.
Pat was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Lawrence. She
was an avid bowler. She loved to dance and especially enjoyed her
“Pepsi”. She dearly loved her family and was “the best Grammy” any
grandchild could ever ask for.
Survivors include two daughters. Kris L. Frike of Kansas City, MO; Kim
A. Murry and husband Tom of El Dorado, KS. There are five
grandchildren, Rodney, Randy, Robert Frike and Ryan and Megan
Murry. One great grandchild Dalton Frike.
Pat, was preceded in death by her parents, brother Eugene Culver and
sister Juanita Fenoglio. Funeral services will be at 11:15 A.M. Saturday,
March 24, 2012 at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg with Father
Tom Stroot officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery. The
family will receive friends starting at 10:30 A.M. and the Parish Rosary

Grover J. Brand, 81, of Columbus, KS died 4:45 p.m. Sunday March 18,
2012 at his home following a brief illness.
Grover was born July 5, 1930, in Stark City, MO to Grover Cleveland
and Ada Neomi (Evans) Brand. He has been a part of this community
since 1971.
He graduated high school in 1948. During his senior year in high
school; he won 6th place in the National Amateur Typing Contest. In
1951 he moved to Washington, D.C. where he worked at the Pentagon
as a Clerk-Typist for the Army/Air Force Postal Service. Shortly after,
he returned home and attended Joplin Business College and received
a Junior Accounting degree. In 1956 he went to work for Eagle Pitcher.
In 1966 the company promoted him to Manager of Purchasing. He
earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Liberal Studies at Oklahoma
University. In 1979 he was employed with the State of Kansas, Grain
Inspection Department as a Warehouse Examiner. He retired in 1992.
On August 31, 1952 he married
Juanita Sue Warden; they later
divorced in 1968. They had 3 daughters.
He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Oswego, KS.
Grover loved his horse, dogs, dancing in his free time; and family was
the most important thing in his life.
Survivors include his children Ellen McKenzie of Norman, OK, Teresa
Cook of Oswego, KS, and Lisa Akuna and husband Bruce of Joplin,
MO; siblings Clifford Brand of Saginaw, MO and Esther Clark of
Coffeyville, KS; grandchildren Dallas McClary, Neal McClary, Brandi
Rose, Sherry Jameson, Mae Akuna and Joe Akuna;
great-grandchildren Rylie McClary, Kate McClary, River Rose, Taylor
Jameson and Anthony Jameson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters and 8 brothers.
Funeral Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday March 22, 2012 at the
Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Columbus, KS with Rev. Rocco Mollardi
officiating. Burial will follow at the FriendshipCemeteryin Rural
Cherokee County. Family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday
