Ella Claudine (Ross) O'Neal, 79, of Galena, Kan., formerly, of Joplin,
Mo., and Weir, Kan., passed away at 4:23 p.m., Saturday, May 19,
2012, at Galena Nursing Center.

She was born Jun. 26, 1932, in Weir, Kan., the daughter of George T.
and Ella M. (Martin) Woods. She graduated from Weir High School.

She was married to Don Ross then later divorced.

She worked for the Army Ammunition Plant in Parson, Kan., as a
secretary for 31 years.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cherokee where she
played piano for several years.

She is survived by a son, Kenneth Ross and wife Sandy, of Weir;
Three daughters: Karla Hubbard and husband Robert, of Weir, Debbie
McCool and Cindy Watson, both of Joplin, Mo., two brothers: Alfred
Bud Woods, of Weir, and Clarence Woods, of Pittsburg, Kan.; seven
grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild.

She is preceded in death by her parents and two granddaughters Tish
and Tosh Wynne.

Graveside Memorial Services will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, May 24,
2012, at Hosey HillCemeteryin Weir with pastor Jamie Tickel
officiating. Family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time at
Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Weir.

Victor E. Dewhirst, 94 formerly of Frontenac, Kansas died at 12:05 A.M.
Friday, May 18, 2012, at Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, Kansas. Mr.
Dewhirst was born October 18, 1917, at Farlington Kansas, the son of
Fay E. Dewhirst and Nannie E. Deemer Dewhirst. Victor graduated
from Girard High School in 1935. He farmed with his father until 1941,
when he entered the U.S. Army and served until 1946. Victor was a
member of Troop D of the 89th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron,
Mechanized. He received battlefield commission to the 2nd Lieutenant
after serving platoon staff sergeant in Battle of Bulge in Germany.
Victor was wounded at Engers, Germany, on March 25, 1945 and was
honorably discharged from the army. Victor received the WWII Victory
medal, ATC Ribbon, EAME Ribbon with 1 Bronze SV Star, and Purple
Heart.

After the Army, Victor was farm manager of College Poultry Farm,
Kansas State, Manhattan, Kansas, for two years, then farm
superintendent, U.S.D.A. experimental poultry farm in W. Lafayette,
Indiana until 1953. During that time he attended Kansas State and
Purdue University. Victor graduated from Purdue University in 1953
with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. Victor was employed at
Mutual Benefit Life Insurance as a farm loan examiner and appraiser
and as a manager with Federal Land Bank.

Victor married Barbara A. Zachariasen on December 29, 1946 at
Wichita, Kansas. Mrs. Dewhirst preceded him in death on February 13,
2001. Survivors included two children, William V. Dewhirst and wife
May of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and Rose Ann Williamson of Des
Moines, Iowa; and one sister Maxine E. Dewhirst of Wichita, Kansas;
four grandchildren, Steve Williamson, Lisa Wenger and Annice
Williamson, all of Des Moines, Iowa, and Ed Dehning of Big Springs,
Nebraska; and 2 great grand children. Victor was preceded in death by
his parents, wife; four sisters, Pearl M. Pacropis, Florine M. Craft, Mary
L. Davied, Ellen R. Dewhirst; Three brothers Paul Dewhirst, Freddie
Dewhirst, George E. Dewhirst; and one grandson Michael Williamson.

Through the years Victor and Barbara lived in Wichita and
Manhattan, Kansas; Lafayette, Indiana; Creston, Iowa; St. Joseph and
Stockton, Missouri. After retirement they returned to southeast Kansas
and lived in the Camp 50 area and Frontenac. Victor was a member of
the American Legion in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Graveside Funeral Services will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, May, 21,
2012 at Garden of Memories with Pastor Verl Strong officiating.
Friends may come by Bath-Naylor Funeral Home of Pittsburg to sign
the book from 9:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. Monday, May 21. Condolences
can be left at www.bathnaylor.com Memorials may be made out to the
Benjamin Fuller American Legion Post 64. Memorials may be dropped
off or mailed to 522 South Broadway, Pittsburg. Arrangements are
under the direction of Bath-Naylor Funeral Home.

Bobby Dean Markley 71, of McCune, KS died 2:50pm Thursday May
10, 2012 at Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, KS following an illness.
Bobby was born January 18, 1941 in McCune, KS the son of Johnny
and Nettie (Larcom) Markley. He was a lifelong resident of the area
and a Graduate of McCune High School in 1958. On July 10, 1966
Bobby married Carla Albertson in Parsons, KS; they later divorced.
Bobby worked as a Pipefitter, Welder, Electrician, Mechanic, Project
Manager and/or Special Operator for 35 years at Mid-America Pipe in
Scammon, KS. He was known as a jack of all trades and no project too
big or small. In his free time he enjoyed gardening, his dog, family and
most of all his grand-daughters.
Survivors include his daughters Robin Chartier and husband Dennis of
McCune, KS, Wendy Markley and Mark Burks of Parsons, KS and Stacy
Gray and husband Tony of Springfield, MO; sisters Betty Henson of
McCune, KS and Mavis Delapaz of Florida; grand-daughters Victoria
Johnson of Pittsburg, KS and Hailey Moss of McCune, KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral Services will be 10am Monday May 14, 2012 at the Bath-Naylor
Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS with Pastor Aaron Williams officiating.
Burial will follow at the StarCemeteryin West Mineral, KS. Family will
receive friends from 7-8pm Sunday May 13, 2012 at the Bath Naylor
Funeral Home of Pittsburg, KS; friends may call after 11am Sunday. In
lieu of flowers the family ask expressions of sympathy be in the form of
memorials to Via Christi Cancer Center. Friends may drop off or mail
memorials to Bath Naylor Funeral Home 522 S. Broadway Pittsburg, KS

Wilma VanHouten, 84 of Columbus died at 7:26 p.m. Tuesday
May 8, 2012 at the Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg.

She was born January 16, 1928 in Clay County, MO the daughter
of Vanus C. and Addie May (Attebury) Patterson. She was a 1946
graduate of Liberty , MO High School.

Wilma moved to the SEK area with her family in 1959 and has
lived in Weir, Frontenac and Columbus.

She married James E. VanHouten in 1949; he preceded her in
death on February 18, 1999.

Wilma was a homemaker; as her children were in school she
worked out of the home as an Administrator at Medicalodge in
Columbus & Beverly Rehabilitation Center of Pittsburg retiring in June
1997.

She was of the Catholic Faith. While working Wilma was active in
the community belonging to the Chamber of Commerce and the
(former) BPW group.

Survivors include 2 daughters Paula Zook and Mike Hodge of
Lawton; Patti Myers of Columbus; 2 sons Bruce VanHouten and wife
Marti of Cherokee, Mike VanHouten and wife Marty of Pittsburg; a
brother Vanus Patterson of Oklahoma City, OK, a sister Wanda Nolte of
Raytown, MO was a devoted aunt to several nieces and nephews and
13 Grandchildren and 13 Great-grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by her parents, husband and a son Doug VanHouten.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday May 11, 2012 at the
Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Weir with Father Chrysostom Ah Maung
officiating. Burial will follow in the Hosey Hill Cemetery. The family will
receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time on Friday. Condolences

Faatoia Tufele (Mr. T.) 84 of Ft. Scott, KS died 2:31am Tuesday May 8,
2012 at Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott, KS following an illness. Private
burial will take place at Ft. Scott NationalCemeteryin Ft. Scott, KS.

Raymond Gene (Sonny) Smith, 71 of Columbus, Kansas passed away
at 3:05 A.M. Sunday, May 6, 2012 at Medicalodge in Columbus
following a lengthy illness. He was born in Picher, Oklahoma September
6, 1940 to the union of Dorris D. and Avanell (Kirk) Smith. He attended
elementary school in Treece, Kansas and High School in Columbus, KS
before enlisting in the Air Force in 1957 and was honorably discharged
in May of 1961 as a A/IC E4. He lived in Wichita, KS following military
service. He worked for Cessna and Lear Jet for 15 years before
moving back to Treece, KS. He then worked for St. Johns of Joplin,
Missouri, then the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant for 6 years before
returning to work at St. Johns for a total of 9 years before retiring due
to health issues. He married Carol Joann Bender September 20, 1962
and they divorced March 23, 1992. He then married May Ann
Patterson January 6, 1995 and they divorced February 15, 2002. He
remained friends with both Carol and Mae Ann. He was preceded in
death by his parents, one son, Keith Allen Smith and a granddaughter.
Survivors include a sister Barbara Poor of the home, a son Mark
Garrison of Joplin, MO, a daughter Carla Leann Smith and husband
Joe of Grove, OK, a daughter Debbie Joann Connor of Chetopa, KS, a
step-daughter Melissa Taylor of Diamond, MO, and a niece Cindy Poor
of the home. Grandchildren Amanda, Travis, Justin, Ryan, Caleb, and
Sarah. Two Step-Grandchildren Kade and Kole. And 3 Great-
Grandchildren. You’re a good man Charlie Brown, from sis. Graveside
Services will be 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, May 9 2012, at Greenlawn
Cemetery with Pastor Rick Prideaux officiating. Visitation will be from 6
p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in
Columbus. Friends may call any time after 10:00 A.M. Tuesday.
