Chester D. Garton

CHAPMAN--Chester Dale Garton, 76, Chapman, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at his home.

He was born Nov. 13, 1923, at Norton, the son of Harley and Velma (Edson) Garton. He attended Norton Grade School and graduated from Norton High School in 1941.

He attended Kansas State University before entering the Army in March 1943. He flew 30 bombing missions over enemy-occupied Germany and France as an armorer-gunner in B-24s and was a staff sergeant. He was awarded the Air Medal and five clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He returned to school and received a mechanical engineering degree from Kansas State University in 1948.

Memorial and inurnment services will be announced at a later date from the Londeen Funeral Chapel, Chapman.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Chapman Indian Hill Golf Course, sent in care of the Londeen Funeral Chapel, Box 429, Chapman, KS 67431.

Frank "Tex" Hubnik

Frank A. "Tex" Hubnik, 76, Abilene, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at Memorial Hospital, Abilene.

He was born Sept. 26, 1924, at Harlingen, Texas, the son of Joseph and Antonio (Slovak) Hubnik. He was a member of the United States Army service in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He received the Purple Heart and was discharged in 1945.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 320 N. Cedar. Burial will be in the Indian Hill Cemetery, Chapman.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Danner Funeral Home, 501 N. Buckeye.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House or the Trinity Lutheran Church, and left at the funeral home or the church.

Bobby G. Hurd

Bobby G. Hurd, 61, Abilene, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, in Memorial Hospital, Abilene.

He was born Dec. 24, 1938, in Stoutsville, Mo., the son of Ralph and Ione (Stribing) Hurd. He attended local schools. After graduating from high school, he joined the United States Army. He was a radar technician.

Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 N.W. Third, the Rev. Mike Eurit officiating. Burial will be in the Fort Riley Post Cemetery with military graveside honors.

Visitation will be at the funeral home until time of service.

LeRoy J. Meredith

COPPERAS COVE, Texas--Leroy J. "Roy" Meredith, 84, a former resident of Abilene, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at his home in Copperas Cove.

He was born Aug. 8, 1916 in Sioux Rapids, Iowa.

Mr. Meredith was a breeder and trainer of greyhounds and was manager of Oswald Brothers Greyhound Farm, west of Abilene, for many years.

A memorial service was Oct. 19, 2000, at the Sheppard Chapel of Memories in Copperas Cove.

Ruth Mitchell

Ruth Mitchell, 85, Salina, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, in the Smoky Hill Rehabilitation Center, Salina.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Carlson-Becker Funeral Home, Solomon.

Lois Vanover

SALINA--Lois Herrington Vanover, 77, Salina, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at Whispering Timbers Assisted Living, Solomon.

Roger Herrington of Solomon is a son.

She was born Lois Taylor on Feb. 3, 1923, in Lincoln and was a lifetime resident of the Salina area.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at Roselawn Heights Memorial Chapel, 1920 E. Crawford, Salina, the Rev. Jack Ropp officiating. Private inurnment will be later in Lincoln Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wayne Newton Scholarship Foundation.

Irma Taylor

SOLOMON--Irma Taylor, 78, Solomon, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, at the Salina Regional Health Center, Salina.

She was born Jan. 12, 1922, in Chanute, the daughter of Arthur and Estell L. (Hubler) Franklin. She moved to Abilene with her family in 1927, where she attended the Abilene schools.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000, at the Solomon United Methodist Church, 111 N. Walnut, Solomon, the Rev. Sam Owen and the Rev. John Daly officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Mound Cemetery, Solomon.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Carlson-Becker Funeral Home, 208 W. Fourth, Solomon.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Salina, Inc., or the Shrine's Crippled Childrens hospitals and left at the funeral home.

Ula B. Beltz

SOLOMON­Ula B. Beltz, 90, Salina, died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, in the Salina Regional Health Center, Salina.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Carlson-Becker Funeral Home, Solomon.

David K. Anderson

TOPEKA--David K. Anderson, 48, Topeka, died Friday, Oct. 27, 2000, at his home.

He was born Feb. 25, 1952, at Hope, the son of Orville J. and Gay R. (Stites) Anderson. He graduated from Hope High School and attended Calvary Bible College in Kansas City, Mo. He graduated from Emporia State University in 1975 with a bachelor of science degree in education-industrial arts.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, at the Church of the Open Door, Topeka. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Ashton Cemetery, Hope.

Memorial contributions may be made to Central States Church Extension, c/o Ralph Burnham, 13552 S.W. 200th St., Rose Hill, KS 67133.

Lucy L. Welch

HERINGTON--Lucy L. Welch, 92, Herington, died Friday, Oct. 27, 2000, at Herington Memorial Hospital.

She was born Feb. 19, 1908, at Clearville, Penn., the daughter of Aric C. and Rachel (Carns) Snyder. She graduated from Elkart High School in 1925 and received her teaching certificate from Fort Hays State University.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, at the United Methodist Church, 3 South B Street, Herington, the Rev. Ed Thompson officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, at Farmington Cemetery, Macksville.

Visitation will be until 8 p.m. today and until time of service on Tuesday at the Donahue Funeral Home Chapel, 404 South Broadway, Herington, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Herington United Methodist Church, sent in care of the funeral home.

Dorothy K. Brierton

FERRIS, Ill.--Dorothy K. Brierton, 80, Ferris, died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at Memorial Hospital, Carthage, Ill.

Mike Brierton of Abilene is a son.

She was born Feb. 27, 1920, in Edina, Mo., the daughter of Martin and Rena Alice (Golbricht) Kiesow. She graduated from Edina High School in 1938.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, at the Ferris Christian Church. Burial will be in the Pilot Grove Cemetery, rural Burnside.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Neiser-Printy Funeral Home, Carthage, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Evelyn V. Stimac

HERINGTON--Evelyn Stimac, 82, Herington, died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at the Herington Municipal Hospital, of natural causes.

She was born July 5, 1918, at Kansas City, the daughter of Edgar N. and Lula Mae (Henry) Birdsong. She graduated from Wyandotte High School, Kansas City, in 1936.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, at St. John's Catholic Church, Herington, Father Mark Wesely officiating. Entombment will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Chapel Mausoleum, Kansas City.

A wake service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Donahue Funeral Chapel, Herington.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Herington Memorial Hospital's Long Term Care Unit, sent in care of the Donahue Funeral Home, 404 South Broadway, Herington, KS 67449-3038.

Ruth Mitchell, 85, Salina, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, in the Smoky Hill Rehabilitation Center, Salina.

She was born Sept. 23, 1915, in Helechawa, Ky., the daughter of Floyd and Fannie (Easterling) Crase. She grew up in the community and attended local schools, graduating from Alvin Drew Methodist High School.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at the First United Methodist Church, 122 N. Eighth, Salina, the Rev. C. Diane Watters and the Rev. Michael Keating officiating. Burial will be in the Hope Cemetery, Hope, at 2 p.m., the Rev. Glenn E. Matthews officiating.

Visitation will be at the Carlson-Becker Funeral Home, 208 W. Fourth, Solomon, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Salina, or the charity of the donor's choice and left at the funeral home.

Sylvia A. Barbur

Sylvia A. Barbur, 87, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000, at her home in Abilene.

She was born July 25, 1913, at Friend, Neb., the daughter of John L. and Lydia (Aab) Weber. She graduated from Friend High School in 1931.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at the Danner Funeral Home, 501 N. Buckeye, the Rev. Lindsay Brummer officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Exeter Cemetery, Exeter, Neb.

Visitation will be at the funeral home.
