Kathryn Moomaw
DIGHTON - Kathryn Moomaw, 93, died Feb. 7, 2000, at Lane County Hospital, Dighton.

She was born Feb. 27, 1906, in a sod house in southeast Lane County, the daughter of John and Ellen Walters Murphy. She attended rural schools, graduated from Dighton High School in 1923, and earned her teaching certificate from Emporia State Teachers College. She taught at country schools for four years and was a homemaker.

She was involved with Extension work, organized the first bloodmobile in Lane County, and helped start the Lane County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

On June 1, 1927, she married John Moomaw at Garden City. He died Jan. 30, 1998.

Survivors include: a son, Max, Dighton; two daughters, Marilyn Bennett, Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Ruth Evans, Lyons; four brothers, Woodrow Murphy, Dighton, Larry Murphy, Wichita, Jim Murphy, Scott City, and Carlos Murphy, Hutchinson; three sisters, Mary Atterberry, Dighton, Alice Gabel, Ellis, and Betty Whiting, Newton; nine grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Michael; and three sisters, Mabelle Hutchins, Nellie Mumma and Patricia Murphy.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Kerry Grogan presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the church or the J.O.Y. Center, both in care of the funeral home.

Marvin Grady Koons
LYONS - Marvin Grady Koons, 91, died Feb. 7, 2000, at Hutchinson Hospital.

He was born July 6, 1908, in rural Alden, the son of Guy Grady and Bertha Maude Elble Koons. He was a 1926 graduate of Alden High School and attended Salt City Business College, Hutchinson. A lifetime Rice County resident, living in rural Alden and in Lyons, he was an employee of the Charles M. Sledd Mercantile Co. for eight years and spent 62 years farming.

He belonged to First Baptist Church, Lyons, where he was a church trustee for many years.

On Oct. 12, 1930, he married Fern Virgil Christiansen. She survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Wayne and Fred, both of Lyons; a brother, Wendell, Wichita; a sister, Klesta Benefiel, Lyons; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Russell; and a granddaughter.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Lyons, with the Rev. Gary Karas presiding. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Sillin Funeral Home Lyons. Burial will be in Lyons Municipal Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the church or to the donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home.

Everett Johns
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Everett Johns, 85, died Feb. 6, 2000, at Nameste Care Center, Colorado Springs.

He was born June 27, 1914, at Woodsfield, Ohio, the son of Archibald and Grace Foracker Johns. A resident of Colorado Springs since 1984, moving from Liberal, he was owner and operator of Johns Construction Company until retiring in 1983.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Liberal, Liberal Chamber of Commerce, Liberal Country Club, High Plains Petroleum Club, 32 Degree Mason of McAllister, Okla., and Shrine in Oklahoma City. He served on the Liberal City Commission and the Seward County Commission.

On Aug. 8, 1936, he married Lucille Campbell at Woodward, Okla. She died Feb. 25, 1982. In May 1999, his wife Emma died.

Survivors include: two sons, Dean, Iraan, Texas, and Wayne, Liberal; two daughters, Caroline Best, Shawnee, and Ann Callahan, Wellington, Fla.; two brothers, Warren, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Clarence, Pampa, Texas; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, Liberal, with the Rev. Stephen B. Saville presiding. Calling times will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Kitch Funeral Home, Liberal. Burial will be in Restlawn Cemetery, Liberal.

Memorials may be sent to the Shriners, in care of the funeral home.

Veronica Schmidt
LA CROSSE - Veronica Schmidt, 86, died Feb. 8, 2000, at Rush County Nursing Home, La Crosse.

She was born May 15, 1913, at Pfeifer, the daughter of John and Margaret Urban Degenhardt. A resident of Pfeifer and Hays for most of her life, she moved to the nursing home in 1988.

She belonged to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Hays.

On Sept. 7, 1931, she married Isidor Schmidt at Pfeifer. He died July 28, 1988.

Survivors include: two sons, Vernon F., Hays, and Robert, Lincoln, Neb.; nine grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Isidor Jr. and Stanley; seven brothers, Andrew, John, Jacob, Casper, Martin, George and William Degenhardt; and seven sisters, Mary Basgall, Eva Pfannenstiel, Magdalena Befort, Rose Pfannenstiel, Anna Marie Zimmerman, Clara Hartman and infant Catherine Degenhardt.

Vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Cline's Mortuary, Hays. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Hays, with Father Michael Suchnicki presiding. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today and 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Thursday at the mortuary. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Hays.

Memorials may be sent to the St. Joseph Parish Service Center Fund, in care of the mortuary.

Anna R. Rogge
GARDEN CITY - Anna R. Rogge, 83, died Feb. 7, 2000, at Garden Valley Retirement Village, Garden City.

She was born May 16, 1916, at Sublette, the daughter of John and Minnie Rehme Rogge. She graduated from Garden City High School, Garden City Community College and Emporia State Teachers College. A Garden City resident since 1946, she was a teacher for 10 years in Finney and Haskell counties and an instructor for Southwestern Bell for 32 years, retiring in 1977.

She belonged to First Christian Church, Garden City, the Church Circle, was a life member of the Finney County Historical Society, Telephone Pioneers of America, the Horticulture Club, the Retired Teachers Association, AARP, RSVP and the Senior Center, and served as treasurer of Pleasant Valley Schoolhouse.

Survivors include: a sister, Elnora Stone, Garden City; and many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Frederick Rogge.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter presiding. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Memorials may be sent to the Finney County Historical Society, in care of the funeral home.

Sylvia S. Janousek
ELLSWORTH - Sylvia S. Janousek, 92, died Feb. 6, 2000, at Ellsworth County Medical Center.

She was born March 29, 1907, at Holyrood, the daughter of Thomas and Hanna Hogan Grounds. A lifetime Ellsworth County resident, she was a retired nurse's aide at Ellsworth County Veterans Memorial Hospital.

She belonged to St. Bernard's Catholic Church, the church's Altar Society, and was a past 4-H leader, all at Ellsworth.

On May 1, 1928, she married Peter G. Janousek at Wilson. He died Jan. 25, 1972.

Survivors include: a daughter, Joyce Marie Miller, Fullerton, Calif.; and a grandchild.

Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Ellsworth, with Father Daniel Scheetz presiding. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Ellsworth Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the Ellsworth County Health Care Foundation, in care of the funeral home.
