Nellie Toews Wiens
HILLSBORO - Nellie Toews Wiens, 97, died Jan. 7, 2000, at Parkside Homes, Hillsboro.
She was born Oct. 11, 1902, in rural Hillsboro, the daughter of Gerhard B. and Helena Hiebert Toews. A Hillsboro resident, she was a Tip Top Creamery employee and a Salem Home nurse's aide.
She belonged to Hillsboro United Methodist Church.
On July 29, 1925, she married
George L. Wiens at Marion. He died in 1972.
Survivors include: a son, Delton, Monmouth, Ore.; a daughter, Marilyn Ensz, Hillsboro; two sisters, Anna Toews, Kearny, Neb., and Luella Funk, Shafter, Calif.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hillsboro United Methodist Church, with Pastor Larry Parrish presiding. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hillsboro Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Cemetery.

Dorothy Marie Stroup
HAYS - Dorothy Marie Stroup, 87, died Jan. 8, 2000, at Hays Medical Center, Hadley Campus.
She was born Feb. 14, 1912, in Smith County, the daughter of LeRoy and Alta West Musser. She graduated from Smith Center High School. A longtime Smith County resident, moving to Hays in 1997, she was a homemaker and farmer.
She belonged to First Presbyterian Church, Smith Center.
On June 22, 1931, she married
Hugh M. Stroup. He died Oct. 5, 1977.
Survivors include: a son, Lyle D., Hays; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray and Everett Musser; two sisters, Floy Day and Irma Beckmann; and a grandson.
Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center, with the Rev. Jim Coone presiding. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Brock's North Hill Chapel, Hays.

Maxine Darst
BUCKLIN - Maxine Darst, 82, died Jan. 7, 2000, at the Fountains at Canterbury Retirement Residence, Oklahoma City.
She was born July 23, 1917, at Kingsdown, the daughter of Chester and Leah M. Bolinger Roley. A lifetime resident of the Bucklin and Kingsdown area, she was a homemaker.
She belonged to First Christian Church, Bucklin.
On June 6, 1940, she married
Merle J. Darst at Spearville. He died Nov. 24, 1997.
Survivors include: two sons, Ron, Lenexa, and Kay, Woodward, Okla.; a daughter, Linda Cook, Edmond, Okla.; a brother, Daryl Darst, Denver; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First Christian Church, Bucklin, with the Revs. Harold Wilcox and Henry Cook presiding. Friends may call from 1 to 7 p.m. today at Minnis Mortuary, Bucklin. Burial will be in Bucklin Cemetery.

Leonetta V. Tinkel
HOISINGTON - Leonetta V. Tinkel, 74, died Feb. 12, 2000, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington.
She was born Jan. 8, 1926, at Beaver, the daughter of William and Catherine Weber Polzin. A lifetime Beaver resident, moving to Hoisington in 1997, she was a homemaker and the retired owner of Larry's Place, Beaver.
She belonged to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and Altar Society, both at Hoisington, and the Daughters of Isabella, Claflin.
On May 2, 1946, she married
Lawrence J. Schremmer at Beaver. He died Jan. 18, 1986. On Feb. 15, 1997, she married
Joseph F. Tinkel at Bartlesville, Okla. He survives.
Other survivors include: four sons, Cletus Schremmer, Pittsburg, Harold and Raymond Schremmer, both of Bartlesville, Okla., and Don, Odin; two brothers, Matt and Joe Polzin, both of Hoisington; four sisters, Mary Robl, Ellinwood, Claire Reif, Osborn, Kan. Margaret Haberman, Great Bend, and Lucille Weber, Wilson; and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Catherine; and four brothers, Jake, Rom, Wilfred and John Polzin.
Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hoisington, with Father Pascal Klein presiding. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Beaver.

David M. Moreno Sr.
DODGE CITY - David M. Moreno Sr., 68, died Feb. 11, 2000, at Western Plains Regional Hospital, Dodge City.
He was born Jan. 20, 1932, in West Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Estanislao and Juana Martinez Moreno. He lived his early life in Mexico and attended schools there. He returned to Dodge City in 1950, and also lived for nine years in Hanston. He spent more than 28 years as a sheet metal worker for Tony's Sheet Metal Company, Dodge City.
He belonged to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Dodge City.
On Sept. 5, 1955, he married
Elsie Sanchez at Dodge City. She died Oct. 4, 1994.
Survivors include: two sons, David Jr., Dodge City, and Stanley, Junction City; two daughters, Rosie Korf, Hanston, and Rita Tweedy, Dodge City; a brother, Candido Moreno, El Paso; a sister, Concha Martinez, Dodge City; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Dodge City. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with Father Ted Skalsky presiding. Friends may call from noon to 6 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City.

Byrdie L. Hodson
PERRY - Byrdie L. Hodson, 84, died Feb. 9, 2000, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
She was born March 3, 1915, at Rolla, the daughter of Jacob Floyd and Hazel Del Campbell Beaty. She attended schools in Hutchinson and graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1932. A Perry resident since 1996, formerly of New Boston, Texas, Pea Ridge Ark., and Lawrence, she worked at Sunflower Ordinance, Lawrence, and at Bella Vista Nursing Home, Pea Ridge, Ark., retiring in 1985.
She belonged to Indian Hills Church of God, Lawrence.
On Feb. 18, 1932, she married
William Calvert Elliott at Hutchinson. She later married
Lester LeRoy Hodson at Lawrence. He survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Dean Elliott, Lawrence; two stepsons, Melvin and Robert Hodson, both of Perry; a daughter, Marjorie Clark, New Boston; a stepdaughter, Caroline Crain, Perry; two sisters, Bonnie Goetz, Hutchinson, and Donna Rothwell, Lawrence; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held in Reno Cemetery, Leavenworth County.
