SOLOMON — Edward J. Jacobs, 81, Solomon, Kansas, died Saturday, July 5, 2008, at his home in Solomon.
He was born Sept. 19, 1926, in Tipton, Kansas, the son of Edward M. and Margaret K. (Hoffman)?Jacobs. He grew to manhood in the community of his birth, attended the Tipton schools, graduated from Tipton High School and received a Business Degree from St. Benedict’s College, Atchison, Kansas.
He worked for the Tipton State Bank and on Sept. 1, 1952, he was united in marriage with Margaret E. Fischer in Tipton. They moved to Solomon, Kansas, in 1959.
He worked for the Solomon State Bank and was in charge of the Riordan Insurance Agency. He retired in 1991 as Executive Vice President and remained on the banks’ Board of Directors until 2008. He was well respected in banking circles and met everyone with a smile.
He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Solomon, Council 1086 Knights of Columbus, was a 4th Degree member of the Msgr. Maher Knights of Columbus and a member of the Solomon Lions Club.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret, of the home; six children, Bond Jacobs and wife Gay, Grand Junction, Colorado, John E. Jacobs and wife Patricia, Salina, Kansas, Joan M. Huston and husband Mark, Olathe, Kansas, Jane E. Jacobs-Lowe and husband Richard, New York, New York, James E. Jacobs and wife Mary, Lenexa, Kansas, and Jean Odle and husband Ted, McPherson, Kansas; twelve grandchildren, Tinker Ducla and husband Jay, Jeremiah Jacobs and wife Sylvia, Michael Jacobs, Christine Jacobs, Jackie Jacobs, Emily Huston, Jessica Jacobs, Rachel Jacobs, Weston Jacobs, Maggie Jacobs, John Paul Jacobs, and Grace Jacobs; three great-grandchildren, Rya Jacobs, Brooklyn Covert and Sage Ducla; and also is survived by many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Solomon, Kansas, Friday, July 11, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. with Msgr. James Hake and Fr. John Wolesky officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Solomon, Kansas.
A parish rosary will be recited at the church Thursday evening at 7 p.m. Friends may call at the Carlson-Becker Funeral Home, Solomon, Kansas.
The family of Edward J. Jacobs suggests that friends may contribute to Benedictine College, Atchison, Kansas, St. Mary’s Grade School and Sacred Heart High School, Salina, Kansas, and Holy Spirit Grade School, Lenexa, Kansas, in his memory. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.
Viola Weber

HOPE — Viola C. Weber, 95, of Hope, died Monday, July 7, 2008, at the Lutheran Home in Herington.
She was born June 10, 1913, near Hope, the daughter of John and Anna (Schlesener) Gruber. She grew to womanhood in the community of her birth and attended Pleasant Valley School.
She married Arthur Walter Henry “Jack” Weber on June 9, 1935. All their married life was spent farming in the Hope area. He preceded her in death on June 12, 1967.
She worked as a cook for the Hope school system for many years.
Mrs. Weber was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lyons Creek, the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, Thrivent, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Hope Senior Center.
Survivors include two sons, Lawrence Weber of Hope and Dennis Weber of Herington; three daughters, Naverta Elliott of Hope, Joan Kerr of Overland Park and Linda May of Harris, Mo.; 16 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren and other relatives.
Besides her husband Jack, she also was preceded in death by two brothers, Leroy and Martin.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday, July 11, 2008, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lyons Creek. Pastor John Reibhoff will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Carlson-Becker Funeral Home, Hope, where friends may call until time of service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Dickinson County or the St. John’s Lutheran Church Altar Guild and left at the funeral home.

ATWOOD — Irene (Birrer)?Cloe Gertson, 97, of Atwood, died Saturday, July 5, 2008.
Survivors include her son, Robert O. Cloe of Manhattan; stepson, Dr. W.F. Gertson of Great Falls, Mont.; daughter, Sonia Jan Domsch of Atwood; stepdaughter, Clarice Gertson Emig of Abilene; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Delbert O. “Sohn” Cloe, in 1970 and her second husband, Dr. E.T. Gertson, in 1983.
Funeral service was at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Christian Church Disciples of Christ, Atwood.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Irene Cloe Gertson Cosmetology Scholarship for Rawlins County Students in care of Williams Funeral Home, Atwood.
Rose-Mary (Hood) Balaun

SALINA — Rose-Mary (Hood) Balaun, 98, died Saturday, July 5, 2008, at her home in Salina.
She was born May 26, 1910, in Herington, the daughter of Vernon and Ellen Hood. After graduating from Herington High School, she studied at Marymount and Wesleyan in Salina.
She married Ellis Balaun on Nov. 18, 1933, and lived in Salina before leaving in 1952.
Mrs. Balaun received a degree in elementary education from Kansas State University. She and her husband taught at schools throughout Kansas, retiring in 1972.
She was a member of the Ladies Guild and Catholic Daughters, serving as regent.
Survivors include one sister, Carmelita (Hood) Terrell; six children, Joe, John, Margaret, Ralph, Paul and Rose Anne; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis, and son, Bill.
A burial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 10, 2008, at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 118 N. Ninth St., Salina, with Father Allen Scheer officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Salina.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina, with a vigil and rosary service at 7:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Cathedral and Immaculate Conception Parish and Cemetery of Solomon in care of the mortuary.

Dan A. Smith Jr., 35, Abilene, Texas, died Sunday, July 6, 2008, at the University Medical Center, Lubbock, Texas, from injuries received in a motorcycle accident in Abilene, Texas.
He was born Jan. 27, 1972, in Abilene, Kan., the son of Dan A. and Mary Lou (Drummond) Smith Sr. He grew up in Abilene, Talmage and Solomon, and attended the local school and graduated from High School. He moved to Texas 12 years ago and owned and operated his own tire and repair shop, Universal Tire, in Abilene, Texas.
Survivors include seven children, Tevin, Tyler and Roxanne of Greeley, Colo., Destiny, Eric Michael, Gabriel and Jimmy of Abilene, Texas; his mother, Mary Frances Drummond Viacaino of Garden City; his step mother, Kathleen Smith of Solomon; four sisters, Jill Stroda of Garden City, Julie Rose of Salina, Tiffany Adams and Loreli Bockenstette, both of Denver, Colo.; two brothers, Michael Smith of Wichita and Aaron Bockenstette of Denver, Colo.; grandparents, Jack Drummond of Abilene, Kan., and John and Jeanie Clements of El Dorado, Kan.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dan A. Smith Sr., one brother, Gordon Smith, and grandparents, Luella Drum-mond and Ray and Nellie Smith.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 12, 2008, at the Carlson-Becker Funeral Home, 208 W. Fourth, Solomon, with the Rev. Carson Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Prairie Mound Cemetery, Solomon.
Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday until service time, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to a memorial fund to assist with his children’s education and funeral expenses.
Elva (Gish) Booth

Elva Mae (Gish) Booth was born May 22, 1919, in Whiting, Kansas and passed from this life at the age of 89 on August 23, 2008, in Manhattan, Kansas.
Elva Mae was raised in Denton, Kansas. She lived in various small Kansas and Nebraska communities during her lifetime, including 15 years in Abilene, Kan., 10 years in Beaver Crossing, Neb., 10 years in DuBois, Neb. and 17 years in Pawnee City, Neb. She moved to the Meadowlark Hills Retire-ment Community in Manhattan in April 2006.
Elva Mae was the second of five daughters of Charles and Lucy (Swartz) Gish.
Her parents and two sisters, Harriet Gish Myers and Mildred Gish Eby, preceded her in death, as did her first husband, Bert Eichelberger. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, James F. Booth, a son-in-law, John Nelson, and a daughter-in-law, Shirena Beardt Booth.
Her survivors include two sisters, Doris Gish Dollar and Evelyn Gish Loyd, as well as two brothers-in-law, Carroll Loyd and Ralph Eby. Surviving children include Linda Booth Nelson of Washington, Kan.; Charles Booth and his wife Susan of Independence, Missouri; Sara Booth Williams and her husband Dennis of Canton, Michigan; Tim Booth of Rockford, Minnesota; and Barbara Booth Grunwald and her husband James of Clovis, California. She also is survived by a stepson, James Eichel-berger and his wife Diane of Atchison, Kansas, 14 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A graduate of Denton (Kansas) High School, Elva Mae also attended Highland (Kansas) Junior College. A homemaker and stay-at-home mom much of her life, she also worked many years as a secretary and bookkeeper. Elva Mae was always very active in church work and held a number of positions, including several years as an elder in the Presbyterian Church. She and husband James worked together as national officers for the Mariners, a couples’ organization in the Presbyterian Church, and served as directors of week-long church family camps in New Mexico, Colorado and South Dakota.
Elva Mae was known throughout her life for her dedication to family and friends, steadfast faith in God, friendly smile, and positive outlook. She always drew out, and spoke of, the best in others.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m Saturday, August 30, 2008, at the United Pres-byterian Church of Pawnee City, Neb., with Pastor Duane West-ing officiating. Private inurnment is planned at the Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery in Fairview, Kansas; no visitation.
The family requests that any memorial donations be sent in Elva Mae’s name to the “Meadowlark Hills Foundation” for use in the Good Samaritan Fund. This fund assists residents who have depleted their resources to continue receiving the same quality of service, care and life enhancement as those with means still available. LINDSBORG — Marian Frances Walquist Miller, 87, of Lindsborg died Saturday, July 5, 2008.
She was born Jan. 11, 1921, at Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Elmer and Hattie (Johnson) Walquist.
She married Donald H. Miller on Dec. 23, 1968, in Kansas City.
She was a secretary to the dean of the medical school and the director of the Medical Center at the K.U. Medical Center for 22 years.
Mrs. Miller was a Lindsborg resident since 1992 after moving from Chapman where she worked at Chapman Elementary School. She previously worked at the Dickinson County Treasurer’s Office in Abilene.
She was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, P.E.O. and Knitwits.
Survivors include her husband, Donald H. of the home; a brother, Wayne Walquist of Jefferson City, Mo., and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Lindsborg. A private burial service will be in the Smolan Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 14 at the Christians Funeral Home in Lindsborg. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Messiah Lutheran Church, Bethany College or Bethany Home.

SALINA — Francisco Garcia Rodriguez, 22, of Salina died Friday, July 4, 2008.
He was born Sept. 16, 1985 in Camargo, Chihuahua, Mexico, the son of Martin Garcia Baca and Maria Guadalupe Rodriguez.
He worked for Russell Stover Candies in Abilene and for an insulation contractor in McPherson.
Survivors include his parents; his brothers, Armando, Jose Luis, Victor, Marco and Gerardo, all of Salina, and Pedro and Alfredo of Mexico; sisters, Susana, Maria Del Carmen, Carolina, Celia, Raquel, Gabriela and Eliza, all of Salina and Mexico; grandparents, Jose Guadalupe Rodriguez, Leonor Martinez, Pablo Garcia and Soledad Baca, all of Mexico.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 11, 2008, at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Salina. A vigil service will be at 8 p.m. today (Thursday) at the church.
Visitation will be until 7 p.m. today (Thursday) at Ryan Mortuary, Salina. Burial will be in All Saints Catholic Cemetery, Salina.
