Phillip Wayne `Dude' Chance
IUKA - Phillip Wayne "Dude" Chance, 86, died Jan. 16, 2000, at Pratt Regional Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 15, 1914, at rural Iuka, the son of Stephen Frank and Cora Malone Chance. A lifetime Iuka area resident, he was a retired farmer.
He belonged to Free Methodist Church, Pratt.
On Nov. 30, 1943, he married
Mildred Coleen Hemphill at Cullison. She died June 18, 1999.
Survivors include: a daughter, Sue Honeman, Iuka; three granddaughters; and two great-granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack; and two sisters, Orlene Chance and Mildred Crouse.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Free Methodist Church, Pratt, with the Rev. Harold Wilcox presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Larrison Mortuary, Pratt. Burial will be in Iuka Cemetery.

Gladys Ericksten
LYONS - Gladys Ericksten, 98, died Jan. 16, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Center, Lyons.
She was born June 29, 1901, in Coffey County, the daughter of Clarence and Harriet Christine Gilges Shivers. A Lyons resident since 1965, formerly of Liberal, she was a homemaker.
She belonged to the Presbyterian Church.
On Oct. 31, 1928, she married
Harold Ericksten at Ponca City, Okla. He died in 1969.
Survivors include: a son, William Lydle, San Antonio; a daughter, Maxine Boroughs, Lyons; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sillin Funeral Home, Lyons, with the Rev. Cindy Watson presiding. Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. The casket will remain closed. Burial will be in Lyons Municipal Cemetery.

Clara I. Smith
HESSTON - Clara I. Smith, 88, died Jan. 17, 2000, at Newton Medical Center.
She was born Sept. 16, 1911, at Elida, Ohio, the daughter of Clark T. and Elizabeth Good Berry. A Hesston resident since 1989, formerly of Jackson, Kalida and Elida, Ohio, she was a homemaker.
She belonged to Salem Mennonite Church, Elida.
On Oct. 6, 1930, she married
Norman O. Smith at Lima, Ohio. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include: two sons, Paul, New Carlisle, Ind., and Kenneth, Palmer Lake, Colo.; two daughters, Marjorie L. Harms, Newton, and Glenna Kirkendall, Elida; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be Saturday afternoon at Salem Mennonite Church, Elida, with the Rev. Mel Hathaway presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

David Dryden
CASPER, Wyo. - David Dryden, 79, of Casper, died Jan. 16, 2000, at Shepherd of the Valley Care Center, Casper.
He was born Oct. 30, 1920, in rural Larned, the son of John L. and Ruth Scott Dryden. He graduated from Larned High School.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, earning a Purple Heart with a bronze oak leaf cluster and a Bronze Star.
Survivors include: his wife, Marilyn, of the home; three sons; a brother, Robert, Larned; four sisters, including Edith Haun, Larned; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery, Casper.

Harry Harvey Leader
PORTLAND, Ore. - Harry Harvey Leader, 63, died Jan. 15, 2000, at Portland.
He was born May 15, 1936, at Attica, the son of Harvey Allen and Ruth J. Hewitt Leader. A Portland resident since 1974, he was the house manager of Rainbow Adult Living Center.
He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include: four sisters, Mary Frechette and Helen Neimann, both of Attica, Velma Anthony and Arlene Leader, both of Pratt; and a brother, Carl Leader, Sandy, Ore.
Memorial service will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at his home, 11336 SE Alder, Portland. Omega Funeral Home, Portland, is in charge of arrangements.

Ansel W. Tobias
LYONS - Ansel W. Tobias, 87, died Jan. 11, 2000, at Hutchinson Hospital.
He was born March 6, 1912, at Lyons, the son of Walter and Iva Stokes Tobias. He graduated from Lyons High School. A lifetime Lyons resident, he was a farmer and owned Tobias, Birchenough & Wright Redi-Mix, Lyons.
He belonged to First Christian Church, Lyons, was a church elder and member of the church trustees, Kiwanis, Lyons, the Chamber of Commerce, the Chandler Bank Board, the Christian Home Board, Newton, the Sterling College Board, the Recedco Board, the Rice County Hospital District No. 1 Board, the Silver Haired Legislature, and was a former member of the House of Representatives of the State of Kansas, and was Speaker Pro-Tem from 1964 to 1976.
On July 29, 1934, he married
Helen M. Monroe at Lyons. She died March 25, 1985. On Nov. 30, 1985, he married
Beulah Slider at Lyons. She survives.
Other survivors include: a daughter, Ann Harbacek, Hutchinson; two stepsons, Bill Slider, West River, Md., and Michael Slider, Olathe; two stepdaughters, Patti Slider and Sandra Slider, both of Topeka; a sister, Ruth Shenkel, West Sun City, Ariz.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Terry.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, Lyons, with the Rev. Tom Eastman presiding. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at Sillin Funeral Home, Lyons, with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Burial will be in Lyons Municipal Cemetery.

Robert `Bob' Benton
LIBERAL - Robert "Bob" Benton, 64, died Jan. 11, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center, Liberal.
He was born Jan. 23, 1935, at Cherryvale, the son of Lewis Clay and Emma Faye Davis Benton. He graduated from Phillips High School, Phillips, Texas. A Liberal resident since 1966, moving from Borger, Texas, he worked for Phillips Petroleum for several years, owned and operated several service stations and other Liberal businesses, and worked for the City of Liberal and the Liberal Area Vo-Tec School.
He attended First Church of the Nazarene, was past director of Kids Inc., a past member of the Liberal Police Reserve and the Kansas Peace Officers Association, was active in the Highway 83 Committee and the Booster Club for the Redskins and was an Artery Club member.
On Dec. 12, 1953, he married
Virginia Marsh at Borger, Texas. She survives.
Other survivors include: three sons, Robert Bruce, Chickasha, Okla., David Blaine, Greeley, Colo., and Phillip Brent, Liberal; three daughters, Bobetta Kay Harper, Liberal, Brenda Sue Benton, Greeley, and Marsha Beth Abbott, Turpin, Okla.; a brother, Kenneth Elbert, Borger; 22 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Darrel; and a sister, Geraldine.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at First Church of the Nazarene, Liberal, with the Rev. Don Patrick presiding. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. today at Kitch Funeral Home, Liberal. Cremation will occur after the funeral service.
