The Rev. Edwin L. Brown
CONCORDIA - The Rev. Edwin L. Brown, 78, died Feb. 5, 2000, at Sunset Nursing Center, Concordia.

He was born April 4, 1921, at Arkansas City, the son of Lon and Eliza Kennedy Brown. He graduated from Arkansas City High School, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Baylor University and a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Colgate-Rochester Theological Seminary, Rochester, N.Y. He was ordained an American Baptist minister at First Baptist Church in Arkansas City and later became minister of Christian Education at First Baptist Church, Terre Haute, Ind. He was pastor of American Baptist churches in numerous cities including Hays and Pratt, retiring in 1983 and serving as interim pastor in numerous cities including Newton, Hutchinson and Sterling.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

On March 23, 1950, he married Lucille S. Garrison at Terre Haute. She died Oct. 22, 1981.

Survivors include: a son, Norman L., Nebraska City, Neb.; and a stepson, Dr. James E. Garrison, El Paso, Texas.

He was preceded in death by an infant son.

Funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Baptist Church, Concordia, with Dr. James McVicar, Dr. Roy Paslay and the Rev. Fred Ansell presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Chapel, Concordia, and the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Arkansas City.

Walter R. Smith
LARNED - Walter R. Smith, 89, died Feb. 4, 2000, at his home.

He was born May 21, 1910, at Lamar, Mo., the son of William M. and Ora Peeler Smith. A Larned resident since 1955, moving from Scott City, he was a farmer and carpenter.

In 1936, he married Eva M. Grippen at Tribune. She survives.

Other survivors include: three sons, Raymond, Larned, Lenard, Pawnee Rock, and Warren, Independence, Mo.; a daughter, Margurite Horn Hoisington; a brother, Lewis D. Smith, Scott City; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ed, Ralph and Bill; and two sisters, Nora and Claire.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned, with the Rev. Jim Hawthorne presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the mortuary. Burial will be in Larned Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to First Presbyterian Church, Larned, in care of the mortuary.

Rhonda Wise Holman
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Rhonda Wise Holman, 39, died Feb. 4, 2000, at Grand Junction.

She was born April 25, 1960, at Washington D.C., the daughter of Robert W. and Anita F. McSpadden Wise. She graduated from McPherson High School in 1978, graduated from McPherson College and earned a master's degree in finance from Colorado State University. A Grand Junction resident since 1999, formerly of Livermore, Calif., and McPherson, she was a homemaker and a vice president and financial officer of a telecommunication company.

On Sept. 15, 1989, she married William J. Holman at Livermore. He survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Daniel Adam, Grand Junction; a daughter, Erin Marie Holman, Grand Junction; a stepson, Joshua Matthew Holman, Stockton, Calif.; parents, McPherson; and a brother, Darrell Wise, Palisade, Colo.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Church of the Brethren, McPherson, with Dr. Don Booz and the Rev. Edwina Pote presiding. There will be no visitation. Private graveside service will be in McPherson Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society, McPherson College or Church of the Brethren Camp Colorado, all in care of Stockham Family Funeral Home, McPherson.

Lyle W. Gerhardt
WICHITA - Lyle W. Gerhardt, 63, died Feb. 5, 2000, at Wichita.

He was born June 15, 1936, at Netawaka, the son of Harry A. and Louise M. Stuenkel Gerhardt. He was a retired tire salesman for Firestone-Bridgestone.

He belonged to Ascension Lutheran Church, Wichita. He was a U.S. Air National Guard veteran of the Vietnam War.

On June 9, 1963, he married Sandra Guetschow at Cheney. She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Tim, Topeka; a daughter, Sheri Murrhee, Middleburg, Fla.; two brothers, Raymond, Meeteese, Wyo., and Eldon, Omaha, Neb.; four sisters, Lois Gerhardt and Linda Auten, both of Topeka, Thelma Penner, Kokomo, Ind., and Dorothy Gerhardt, Leavenworth; and a grandson.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Ascension Lutheran Church, Wichita, with the Rev. Scott Goltl presiding. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Wulf-Ast Mortuary, Garden Plain. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Cheney.

Memorials may be sent to the church in care of the mortuary.

Lucille A. Rich
PRATT - Lucille A. Rich, 84, died Feb. 5, 2000, at Hilltop Manor, Cunningham.

She was born Dec. 25, 1915, at rural Spearville, the daughter of Clarence and Clara Book Allison Batterton. She graduated from Pratt High School. A longtime Pratt resident, formerly of Grove, Okla., she was a homemaker.

She belonged to First Christian Church, Grove, and was past president and a former member of the Elks Emblem Club.

On Dec. 25, 1938, she married William Harley Rich at Pratt. He died March 8, 1973.

Survivors include: a daughter, Martha Kramer, Pratt; three sisters, Clara Karstead, Elsabrante, Calif., Bernice McArthur, Kimberling City, Mo., and Marilyn Heeke, China Lake, Calif.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Laura Clapier.

Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Greenlawn Cemetery, Pratt, with Chaplain Edith Williams presiding. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Larrison Mortuary, Pratt.

Memorials may be sent to Lemons Park Fund or South Wind Hospice, both in care of the mortuary.

Donald D. Kreger
DODGE CITY - Donald D. Kreger, 66, died Feb. 5, 2000, at his home.

He was born June 22, 1933, at Dodge City, the son of Herman and Mabel Hemphill Kreger. A longtime Dodge City resident, he was retired from the U.S. Navy, where he served in the Korean and Vietnam wars.

He was a life member of Howard Gotschall Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1714, Dodge City.

On Sept. 1, 1979, he married Agnes Gould at Dodge City. She died Jan. 16, 2000.

Survivors include: a son, Stephen, Liberty Lake, Wash.; a daughter, Stephanie Kreger, San Diego; and a sister, Lea Bell Vaneta, Pampa, Texas.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City, with full military graveside rites by VFW Post No. 1714. There will be no visitation.

Burkhart Funeral Chapel, Dodge City, is in charge of arrangements.

James Elmo Roberts
PRATT - James Elmo Roberts, 81, died Feb. 5, 2000, at Friendship Manor, Pratt.

He was born April 12, 1918, at Atlanta, Kan., the son of James Paul and Mary Bell Thompson Roberts. A Pratt resident since 1927, moving from Atlanta, he was a retired city meter reader.

On June 21, 1940, he married Molly Morieun Greenstreet. She survives.

Other survivors include: a daughter, Anita Tuttle, Scottsdale, Ariz.; two brothers, Merle, Pratt, and Carl, Baltimore, Md.; four sisters, Erma Bryan and Vada Kinsey, both of Pratt, and Lula Greenstreet and Mary Ruth Cummings, both of Wichita; a granddaughter; and two great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Johnnie and Howard.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Larrison Mortuary, Pratt, with the Rev. Harold Wilcox presiding. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today and Tuesday at the mortuary. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery, Cullison.

Memorials may be sent to Cullison Cemetery, the Elmo Roberts Memorial Fund or a charity of the donor's choice, all in care of the mortuary.
