Naomi Herbel
BISON - Naomi Herbel, 80, died Jan. 28, 2000, at Norman, Okla.
She was born Sept. 10, 1919, on a farm northwest of Otis, the daughter of George and Amelia Janke Schriner. A lifetime Rush County resident, she was a homemaker.
She belonged to Lutheran Church, Otis.
On Jan. 30, 1939, she married
Edward Herbel at Hutchinson. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include: three sons, Jerry, Dallas, David, Aurora, Colo., and Robert, Blanchard, Okla.; a brother, Adolph Schriner, Hesston; a sister, Isabel Dirks, Littleton, Colo. five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Edward; and four brothers, Edward, Frank, Lawrence and Elmer Schriner.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, with the Rev. Margaret Gary presiding. Friends may call prior to service time at the funeral home. Burial will be in La Crosse City Cemetery.

C. Marguerite Klein
NEWTON - C. Marguerite Klein, 90, died Jan. 30, 2000, at Presbyterian Manor, Newton.
She was born April 5, 1909, in rural Wichita, the daughter of Lewis Jackson and Hettie Catherine Loudenslager Nicholson. A resident of Newton, she was a retired elementary-school teacher for the Ashland Public School system.
She belonged to First United Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women, was an elder of the church, was in the Irene Circle, Retired Teachers Association, and was a former member of the AAUW.
On Aug. 23, 1938, she married
the Rev. Richard Stanley Klein at Maize. He died July 24, 1974.
Survivors include: three sons, Richard S. and Alford, both of Plano, Texas, and Larry Lee, San Geronimo, Calif.; a sister, Ersa Walker, Newton; and seven grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today at First United Presbyterian Church, Newton, with the Rev. Jim Anderson presiding. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be sent to the Good Samaritan Fund of Presbyterian Manor, Central Homecare and Hospice, or to the Scholarship Fund at the church, in care of Petersen Funeral Home, Newton.
Clifford Edward Shannon
LINCOLN - Clifford Edward Shannon, 83, died Jan. 30, 2000, at Mid-America Health Care Center, Lincoln.
He was born July 20, 1916, at Geneseo, the son of George and Blanche MacEntaffer Shannon. A Lincoln resident since 1976, he was a teacher and grade school administrator, serving in Jetmore, Cimarron, Geneseo, Mankato, Lincoln, Lansing and Longford.
He belonged to Lincoln Evangelical Church, the Lincoln Lions Club and the National Educators Association.
Survivors include: his wife, Dorothea, of the home; three daughters, Joan Cooke, Naperville, Ill., Jean Scherer, Olathe, and Joyce Haffey, Kansas City, Mo.; a brother, Kenneth, McPherson; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Geneseo City Cemetery, with the Rev. Rob Stefek presiding. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Harrison-Hall Funeral Home, Lincoln, with family receiving friends from 4 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Evangelical Church, Lincoln, in care of the funeral home.
Anna E. Gard
COLDWATER - Anna E. Gard, 97, died Jan. 30, 2000, at Comanche County Hospital, Coldwater.
She was born June 25, 1902, at Durango, Colo., the daughter of Nathaniel G. and Cora Clark Barnes. She attended country schools. A lifetime Comanche County resident, she was a homemaker.
She belonged to First Baptist Church, Protection, and JUS, Coldwater.
On Aug. 26, 1928, she married
Herlie Gard at Coldwater. He survives.
Other survivors include: a brother, Oren Barnes, Coldwater; and several nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Mansel, Ted and Jack Barnes.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, Coldwater, with the Rev. Kent Little presiding. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery, Coldwater.

Gerhart H. Kurth
OFFERLE - Gerhart H. Kurth, 81, died Jan. 30, 2000, at Hill Top House, Bucklin.
He was born April 5, 1918, in Ford County, the son of A. C. and Lena Weiss Kurth. A lifetime area resident, he was a farmer.
He belonged to Zion Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Layman's League.
Survivors include: a brother, Homer, Alma, Mo.; and three sisters, Wilma Lancaster, Offerle, Gertrude Witte, Stillwater, Okla., and Vera Buss Raines, Seymour, Ind.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Woodrow and Reinhart; and a niece.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Offerle, with the Rev. David Parks presiding. Friends may call from 1 to 7 p.m. today at Minnis Mortuary, Bucklin. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Offerle.

Lenora Ballard
PLAINS - Lenora Ballard, 84, died Feb. 7, 2000, at Via Christi Medical Center, St. Joseph campus, Wichita.
She was born Nov. 1, 1915, at Elkton, Ky., the daughter of Herbert and Veva Shemwell Tabb. She graduated from Elkton High School. A Plains resident since 1937, she was a tax preparer for H & R Block and a homemaker.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star, both of Plains.
On June 6, 1937, she married
Woodrow R.A. Ballard at Elkton, Ky. He died Feb. 15, 1969.
Survivors include: three daughters, Louise Howard, Velma Lucille Wilson and Lillian Simpson, all of Wichita; a sister, Model Morgan, East Helena, Mont.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Adrain, and Roland; and a sister, Violet.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Plains, with the Revs. Vernon Maelzer and Dale Lewis presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary, Meade. Burial will be in Plains Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association, both in care of the mortuary.
Gladys M. Smith
LARNED - Gladys M. Smith, 90, died Feb. 6, 2000, at her home.
She was born May 9, 1909, in Mitchell County, the daughter of Joseph Floyd and Rebecca Jane Hunter Woddell. A resident of Larned for 33 years, moving from Glen Elder, she was a housewife.
On Feb. 12, 1938, she married
Walter John Smith at Mankato. He died in April 1967.
Survivors include: a son, Lowell, Locke, N.Y.; four daughters, Paula Smith, Larned, Rowena Smith, Wichita, Lola Smith, Great Bend, and Rose Smith, Topeka; a brother, Paul Woddell, Beloit; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services and inurnment will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Naomi Cemetery, Glen Elder.
