Aaron L. Nikkel
MOUNDRIDGE - Aaron L. Nikkel, 97, died Jan. 8, 2000, at Moundridge Manor.
He was born May 8, 1902, at Houston, the son of John and Helena Loewen Nikkel. A Moundridge resident for 20 years, moving from Inman, he was a custom harvester.
He belonged to Zion Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, rural Inman.
On March 25, 1925, he married
Marie Martens at Inman. She died June 19, 1996.
Survivors include: a son, Delbert E., Moundridge; a daughter, Lorena M. Yost, Montezuma; a brother, Tony, Moundridge; two sisters, Susan Eason, Moundridge, and Eva Ensz, Inman; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and seven sisters.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, rural Inman, with Ministers Abe Toews and Abe Nikkel presiding. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Moundridge Funeral Home. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Ben Schwien
BAZINE - Ben Schwien, 92, died Jan. 8, 2000, at Hays Medical Center, St. Anthony Campus.
He was born June 13, 1907, at Bazine, the son of George and Maria Schneider Schwien. A lifetime Bazine resident, he was a farmer.
He belonged to St. Paul Congregational Church, Bazine.
On May 24, 1934, he married
Lydia Schneider at Bazine. She died April 10, 1990.
Survivors include: two sons, Harold and Paul, both of Bazine; three daughters, Ann Farrow, Moore, Okla., Clarnetta Cooper, Topeka, and Alberta Nichols, Wichita; two brothers, Ferdinand Schwien, Ness City, and Edward Schwien, Bazine; nine grandchildren; two step-grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gerald.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Congregational Church, Bazine, with Pastor Jason Godsell presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Tuesday and until service time Wednesday, all at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bazine Cemetery.

Opal M. Crane
DODGE CITY - Opal M. Crane, 94, died Jan. 9, 2000, at Manor of the Plains, Dodge City.
She was born May 7, 1905, at Hardy, Neb., the daughter of Albert and Minnie Harmon Bailey. She was a gift-shop clerk.
She belonged to First United Methodist Church, Dodge City.
In 1923 she married
Sylvester Jacobs at Norton. He died in 1964.
Survivors include: a daughter, Donna Shirley, Dodge City; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, three brothers and three sisters.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Greencrest Cemetery, Dodge City, with the Rev. Dick Robbins presiding. Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. today at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City.

Max Van Norman
LYONS - Max Van Norman, 82, died Jan. 9, 2000, at Villa St. Francis Nursing Home, Olathe.
He was born Jan. 19, 1917, at Saxman. A longtime Lyons resident, he was a retired farmer and miner for Carey Salt, Hutchinson.
He belonged to Church of the Nazarene, Lyons.
On Oct. 11, 1939, he married
Edith Grace Johnson at Langley. She died April 19, 1999.
Survivors include: a son, Lester, Shawnee Mission; a brother, Elmer, Lyons; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sillin Funeral Home, Lyons, with the Rev. Robert Friesen presiding. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Langley Cemetery.

ANTHONY - Hugh D. Ransom, 96, died Jan. 8, 2000, at Anthony.
He was born July 1, 1903, at Grant County, Okla., the son of Ralph C. and Mabel Wirick Ransom. He was a retired farmer.
He belonged to Freeport Presbyterian Church.
On Sept. 8, 1924, he married
Grace Allen at Yakima, Wash. She survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Donald, Bakersfield, Calif.; a daughter, Mary Jo Hodson, Anthony; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary, Anthony, with Pastor John Schnelle presiding. Burial will be in Freeport Cemetery.

JOHNSON - Rachel Kae Whaley, infant daughter of Scott G. and Lori Fischer Whaley, died Jan. 9, 2000, at Johnson.
She was born Nov. 1, 1999, at Liberal.
Survivors include: her parents; a brother, Zachary, of the home; grandparents, Gerald and Karen Fischer, Scranton, and the Rev. Charles and Bernice Whaley, Shawnee; and a great-grandmother, Margaret Calvert, Osage City.

Pauline Maxine Herbers
WINFIELD - Pauline Maxine Herbers, 78, died March 28, 2000, at Cumbernauld Village, Winfield.
She was born Nov. 4, 1921, at Wann, Okla., the daughter of Anthony and Gertrude Moon Frischenmeyer. She graduated from St. Mary's Cathedral High School, Wichita. She moved to a farm southeast of Winfield in 1951 from Wichita, formerly of Mulvane. She worked at Snyder Clinic, Dr. W. Barr, D.D.S., and retired from Winfield State Hospital in 1989.
She belonged to Holy Name Catholic Church and Altar Society, Winfield.
On Oct. 8, 1940, she married
Sylvester Beda Herbers at Wichita. He died Dec. 10, 1985.
Survivors include: four sons, Larry Herbers, Topeka, Don Herbers, Leoti, Tom Herbers, Scott City, and Chuck Herbers, Winfield; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Michael; and three brothers, Frank, Anthony and Carl Frischenmeyer.
Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Miles Funeral Service, Winfield. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church, Winfield. Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Winfield.
Esther E. Purdy
MISSION VIEJO, Calif. - Esther E. Purdy, 82, died Mar. 24, 2000, at Beverly Health Care Center, Laguna Hills, Calif.
She was born July 16, 1917, in Beaver County, Okla., the daughter of Thomas and Carrie Igo Frisby. She attended Sublette schools, and had been a resident of California since 1973. She was a homemaker.
On June 6, 1939, she married
Woodrow Wilson Purdy at Garden City. He died July 13, 1992.
Survivors include: seven sons, Roger, Las Vegas, Nev., Richard, Great Bend, Thomas, Lawrence, James and Greg, both of Mission Viejo, Alan "Barry", Oceanside, Calif., and Mark, Hacienda Heights, Calif.; three daughters, Cathryn and Linda Purdy, both of Mission Viejo, and Susan Purdy, Dana Point, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. David Sweley presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.

Laurel Lee Mitchell
MARQUETTE - Laurel Lee Mitchell, 74, died March 27, 2000, at his home.
He was born Sept. 23, 1925, at Langley, the son of John Amos and Irma Blanche Kindt Mitchell. A resident of Marquette since 1992, formerly of Bakersfield, Calif., he was a retired heavy equipment operator.
He was a member of Marquette United Methodist Church and American Legion Post, Marquette, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
On June 12, 1949, he married
Elverta Jean "Susie" Hulse at Marquette. She died Aug. 25, 1995.
Survivors include: a brother, George, Marquette; three sisters, Lou Ann Ritterhouse, Albert, Barbara Allen-Hubbard, New Iberia, La., and Anita Jo Peterman, Ellsworth; a daughter-in-law, Janet Mitchell, Marquette; and a grandson, Brian Mitchell, Salina.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Gary and Larry; a brother, Amos; and three sisters, Blanche McNett, Betty Hall and Mary Roach.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Langley Cemetery, rural Marquette, with the Rev. Larry Brock presiding. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Marquette United Methodist Church. The casket will remain closed.
