Roy Warren Layton
NEWTON - Roy Warren Layton, 97, died June 21, 2000, at Friendly Acres Nursing Center, Newton.
He was born April 25, 1903, at Salem, N.J., the son of Warren S. and Mary Miller Layton. He was a farmer.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Halstead.
On Aug. 4, 1928, he married
Alice Flora Ropp, at Newton. She died Aug. 1, 1992.
Survivors include; a daughter-in-law, Thelma Layton, Wichita; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a son, Eugene Layton; four brothers, Stacy, Howard, Charles and Fletcher Layton; and a sister, Mable.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Halstead Cemetery, Halstead. Friends may call 4 to 8 p.m. today, at Kaufman Funeral Home, Halstead.

Waldo J. Zerger
ANADARKO, Okla. - Waldo J. Zerger, 85, died June 16, 2000, at Anadarko Municipal Hospital.
He was born June 23, 1914, in Caddo County, Okla., the son of John and Emma Kaufman Zerger. Moving to Belmont in 1924, he graduated from Belmont High School in 1932. He graduated in 1936 from Southwestern College in Winfield. He moved to Anadarko in 1946 and worked in an appliance store for his uncle.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in northwest Africa.
On Oct. 17, 1942, he married
Jane Stice at Camp Gruber, Okla. She survives.
Other survivors include: two sons; a daughter; three brothers, including Glen and Carrol D. Zerger, both of Kingman; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral was held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Anadarko.
Smith Funeral Home, Anadarko, was in charge of arrangements.
William J. 'Bill' Horner
LARNED - William J. "Bill" Horner, 97, died June 21, 2000, at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Joseph Campus, Larned.
He was born May 2, 1903, at Crawford, the son of William E. and Margaret Steenson Horner. A lifetime Pawnee County resident, he was a farmer, stockman and horseman.
On Oct. 9, 1929, he married
Neva B. Bird, at Hutchinson. She survives.
Other survivors include: a son, William Lee, Larned; three daughters, Leona E. Skelton, Hevey Bay, Queensland, Australia, Neva Horner, Phoenix, and Mary V. Rumsey, Moore, Okla.; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Thursday in Larned Cemetery, with the Rev. Jack Singer presiding.
Memorials may be sent to the children's department of the Larned Presbyterian Church, or to the Welcome Inn, both in care of Beckwith Mortuary, Larned.
Manuel Garcia Sr.
GARDEN CITY - Manuel Garcia Sr., 89, died June 22, 2000, at his home in Garden City.
He was born June 1, 1911, at Mexico City, the son of Cipriano and Refugia Perez Garcia. He worked as an auto body repairman at Burtis Motor for 35 years, Farmland security guard for four years, was an employee at El Zarape for 25 years, and was deputized on Dec. 17, 1970.
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, and past member of the Fiesta Committee, both at Garden City.
On Feb. 18, 1933, he married
Phyllis Pichardo, at Garden City. She died April 8, 1995.
Survivors include: six sons, Dino, Tony, Mike, all of Garden City, Hector, Houston, Manuel Jr., Dallas, Louis, Wichita; two daughters, Andrea Flores and Ruth Jurado; brother, Epifanio Garcia Sr.; sister, Andrea Campos, all of Garden City; 41 grandchildren; 108 great-grandchildren; and 25 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son; a daughter; and two grandsons.
Vigil service will be 7:30 tonight at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, and rosary will follow. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at the church, with Father James E. Baker presiding. Friends may call 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Dean Schwartzkopf
LA CROSSE - Dean Schwartzkopf, 79, died June 22, 2000, at Rush County Nursing Home, La Crosse.
He was born June 8, 1921, at Bison, the son of David and Edith Louise Schwartzkopf. A lifetime Rush County resident, he worked as a laborer in the lumberyard, stockyard and the circus.
He belonged to United Methodist Church, La Crosse.
Survivors include: a sister, Anita Hubbard, Fallon, Nev.; and several nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Merle; and sister, Dorothy.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, with the Rev. Marilyn Christmore presiding. Friends may call prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in La Crosse City Cemetery.

Irene Gamez
DEERFIELD - Irene Gamez, 76, died June 21, 2000, at Kearny County Hospital, Lakin.
She was born July 28, 1923, at Durango, Mexico, the daughter of Juan and Beatrice Tinoko Garcia. She was a longtime resident of Acuna Coah, Mexico, moving to Deerfield in 1999.
In 1939, she married
Cayetano Gamez, at Mexico. He died in 1953.
Survivors include: a son, Juan, Deerfield; a daughter, Ma-Luisa Mendoza, Mexico; 10 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Jesus and Roberto; and a daughter, Marie Elena Gamez.
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Lakin, with Father Mike Helms presiding.

Robert L. Warbinton
ANTHONY - Robert L. Warbinton, 75, died June 21, 2000, at his home in Anthony.
He was born Dec. 5, 1924, at Oswego, the son of Ward and Helen Mingle Warbinton. He was a retired assistant manager at Anthony Farmers Co-op.
On July 19, 1947, he married
Jane Mawhiney at Altamont. She survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, David, Winfield, and Doug, Webb City, Mo.; a daughter, Debra Rice, Nevada, Mo.; a brother, Ronald, Harper; a sister, Barbara Parsons, Wichita; and six grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Elliott Mortuary, Anthony, with the Revs. Carol Hallman, Rick Thornton and Harald Wisegarver presiding. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery, Anthony.

Verne Mille
SUBLETTE – Verne Miller, 88, died April 25, 2000, at Hamilton County Extended Care Unit, Syracuse.
He was born July 20, 1911, in Haskell County, the son of Charles Edward and Flossie Pearl Follin Miller. He attended Sublette High School and graduated from Manhattan High School. He worked for other farmers during the Depression, finally taking over the family farm, and became a pioneer in Haskell County irrigation. He raised certified seed and ran cattle. After retirement, he established a tree farm and raised Christmas trees.
He was a member of Plymell Union Church, where he was a past board member; was a longtime member of the Haskell County Soil and Conservation Board, a past treasurer of Finney-Haskell County Old Settlers Association, belonged to the Farm Bureau, and was a founding member of the Kansas Christmas Tree Growers Association.
On Dec. 23, 1931, he married
Dollie Ida Freeman at Cimarron. She died Aug. 14, 1978.
Survivors include: a son, Francis, Hartsburg, Mo.; two daughters, Verna Rundell, Syracuse, and Fredys Wasson, Belpre; two brothers, Earl, College Park, Md., and Ralph, Upland, Calif.; two sisters, Laura Quakenbush, Sublette, and Mary Vail, Alexandria, Va.; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Plymell Union Church, with Pastors Ray Raley and Gary Meeks presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Tyler Blaine Foss
BOULDER, Colo. – Tyler Blaine Foss, 23, died April 23, 2000, at his home.
He was born May 6, 1976, at Kansas City, Kan., the son of Daniel C. and Patricia A. Brill Foss. He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1994, attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, and was attending the University of Colorado, Boulder.
He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.
Survivors include: his parents, Hutchinson; a sister, Tara E. Carleton, Kansas City, Mo.; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Brill, Lewis.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Amanda Louise; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Don C. Foss.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Hutchinson, with the Rev. William T. Soule presiding. Friends may sign the book from 1 to 9 p.m. today and Friday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson.
