Edna Swartley
GARDEN CITY - Edna Swartley, 96, died May 4, 2000, at Stanton County Long Term Care Unit, Johnson.
She was born Nov. 2, 1903, at Leedey, Okla., the daughter of Forrest L. and Eliza Ingram Weast. She was a homemaker and a former cashier for J.C. Penney Co.
She belonged to First United Methodist Church, Garden City, and the Women's Circle of the church.
On July 20, 1935, she married Harold Swartley at Garden City. He died in 1976.
Survivors include: a son, John, Rogersville, Mo.; a daughter, Carol Anderson, Johnson; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Janet Hernandez presiding. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Memorials may be sent to the Stanton County Long Term Care Unit, in care of the funeral home.

Sherman Baird Jr.
DODGE CITY - Sherman Baird Jr., 75, died May 24, 2000, at Garden Valley Retirement Center, Garden City.
He was born Nov. 13, 1924, at Dodge City, the son of Sherman Sr. and Mae Moore Baird. He graduated from Dodge City High School. A Garden City resident since 1963, he worked as a grain manager for Garden City Cooperative Exchange, retiring in 1987.
He belonged to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Canyon, Texas, and St. James' Lutheran Church, Garden City, the American Legion, the Elks Lodge and the Rotary Club all at Garden City.
On May 6, 1946, he married Carola Spaniol at Dodge City. She survives.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Leslie Wagner, Holcomb, and Monte Wise, Canyon, Texas; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, with Pastor Kent Crockett and Eulogist Harley Foulks presiding. Cremation is planned. There will be no visitation.
Memorials may be sent to Crown of Texas Hospice, 1000 S. Jefferson, Amarillo, TX 79101.

Betty Jean Fogleman
DODGE CITY - Betty Jean Fogleman, 65, died June 23, 2000, at her home in Dodge City.
She was born Aug. 5, 1934, at Dodge City, the daughter of George and Marie Henry Cummins. She was a retired nurse and physical therapist. She had returned to Dodge City 10 years ago, after living in California for 35 years.
She belonged to First Church of God, Dodge City.
Survivors include: her mother, Dodge City; a son, Allen Eberhart, Dodge City; and five daughters, Lisa Brown, Sandra Giannino, Tracy Herrera, Cheryl Hewes and Robin Jones, all of Dodge City; two brothers, Harry and Robert Cummins, both of Dodge City; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, with the Rev. Kevin Clouse presiding. Friends may call from noon to 6 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Cremation is planned.
Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home.

Gladys L. Link
ALVA, Okla. - Gladys L. Link, 78, died June 23, 2000, at Alva Share Medical Center, Alva.
She was born Dec. 26, 1921, at El Dorado, the daughter of Fred and Ivy Bell Pippig Neukirch. A longtime Alva resident, she was a seamstress, paperhanger, and a nurse aide at Share Convalescent Home.
Survivors include: five daughters, including Marilyn Johnson, Buhler; a brother; a sister; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Wharton Funeral Chapel, Alva. Burial will be in Alva Municipal Cemetery.

Robert Dean Leiker
NESS CITY - Robert Dean Leiker, 73, died June 24, 2000, at Ness County Hospital, Ness City.
He was born Sept. 24, 1926, at Ness City, the son of Alex and Margaret Pfannenstiel Leiker. He was a lifetime resident of Ness City and a dirt contractor.
He belonged to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Ness City, the Cedar Bluff Lake Association and was a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include: two sons, Donald D. and David G., both of Ness City; a brother, Al, Ness City; two sisters, Coletta Luetters, Ransom, and Martina Farrington, Ness City; and three grandchildren.
Parish vigil will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with Father Gregory LeBlanc presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Ness City.
Memorials may be sent to the church or to Sacred Heart School, both in care of the funeral home.

Pastor Clarence H. Lackey
HAYS - Pastor Clarence H. Lackey, 85, died June 23, 2000, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.
He was born Dec. 23, 1914, at Roanoke, Va., the son of Carl and Nanny Thomas Lackey. He attended school in Roanoke. He worked for Norfolk Western Railway until 1942. He attended Practical Bible Institute at Binghamton, N.Y., and Grace Theological Seminary from 1946 to 1947. He pastored in Brethren churches for 40 years., retiring to Hays in 1988.
On June 2, 1946, he married Marian Cummings at Binghamton, N.Y. She survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Hank, of Portis; three daughters, Ruth Brown, Susank, Joan Rector, Jonesborough, Tenn., and Susan Philbern, Dundee; two brothers, Stone and Horace Lackey, both of Roanoke; four sisters, Lois Kinsey and Phyllis Webb, Roanoke, Audrey Ellis, Las Vegas, and Kathryn Akers, Winchester, Va.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Chris, Vernon and Herman Lackey.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Hays Memorial Chapel. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Allen Cemetery, 27th & Vine, Hays.
Memorials may be sent to the Clarence Lackey Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Charleen Kay Bobeck
GREAT BEND - Charleen Kay Bobeck, 35, died June 23, 2000, at Hutchinson Hospital.
She was born Jan. 8, 1965, at Great Bend, the daughter of Charles E. and Ona Lee Seitzinger Bobeck. A lifetime Great Bend resident, she was a nurse's aide at Integrated Health Services.
She belonged to the Eagles Lodge.
Survivors include: two sons, Darrin W. and Derrick W. Hearn, both of Great Bend; a brother, Terry Locke; and three sisters, Vicki Wilson, Sacramento, Calif., Kathy Pratt, Hutchinson, and Mary Zahn, Ellinwood.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Jeff Horyna.
Graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday in Golden Belt Cemetery, Great Bend, with the Rev. Dick Ogle presiding. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. today at BryantChristians Funeral Home, Great Bend.
Memorials may be sent for the children's education fund, in care of the funeral home.

The Rev. Raymond Lee Curry
NEWTON - The Rev. Raymond Lee Curry, 77, died June 24, 2000, at his home in Newton.
He was born Feb. 8, 1923, at Geff, Ill., the son of Flavius S. and Nona Jane Scott Curry. He attended college for four years, and the seminary for three years. He served the United Methodist Church for 37 years, retiring in 1988. He was pastor of Eastside Methodist Church, Newton, from 1974 to 1988, had served as a missionary for two years in Tanzania and was a former chaplain for the Harvey County Jail. He was a Hospice volunteer for several years.
On Sept. 19, 1943, he married Maxine Niccum at Amarillo, Texas. She survives.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Carolyn Liggenstoffer, Kiowa, and Anita Curry, Wichita; a brother, John Curry, Fairfield; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Schakleford and Helen Nettleton.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Eastside United Methodist Church, Newton. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, Newton, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m. A second service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Salem United Methodist Church, Bushton. The family will greet friends from 2:30 p.m. until service time Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery, Bushton.
Memorials may be sent to Eastside United Methodist Church or to a mission field of the donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home.

Robert Frank 'Bob' Helfrich
SYRACUSE - Robert Frank "Bob" Helfrich, 48, died March 26, 2000, as the result of injuries sustained in an auto accident in rural Coolidge.
He was born Aug. 13, 1951, at Syracuse, the son of Fred and Virginia H. Wilt Helfrich. He graduated from Coolidge High School in 1969, attended Fort Hays State University and graduated from Kansas State University in 1973. A lifetime Coolidge resident, he was a farmer, part owner of Coolidge Dairy and traded commodities.
He attended St. Raphael Catholic Church, Syracuse.
On Aug. 15, 1992, he married Tish Huser at Las Vegas, Nev. She survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, Jesse and Nicholas, both of Syracuse; a daughter, Alexandra Helfrich, Syracuse; a brother, Dick, Coolidge; and two sisters, Nancy McBride, Holcomb, and Peggy Helfrich, Nashville, Tenn.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John "Jack;" and a sister, Judy Helfrich.
Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. MT today at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, Syracuse. Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. MT Wednesday at Coolidge High School Gym, Coolidge, with Father Mike Helms presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. MT today at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Burial will be in Syracuse Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to the Helfrich Children Education Fund at First National Bank, Syracuse, in care of the funeral home.
