Vincent V. Hewitt
GARDEN CITY - Vincent V. Hewitt, 75, died Feb. 18, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
He was born May 26, 1924, at La Cygne, the son of James Walter and Florence Pauline Kuhn Hewitt. He attended Louisburg schools. A Garden City resident since 1971, formerly of Greensburg, Colby and Scott City, he had worked as a sales representative for Mutual of Omaha since 1953, retiring in 1989.
He attended St. Mary's Catholic Church, Garden City. He belonged to American Legion Post No. 9 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2279, both at Garden City, the American Diabetes Association, AARP and the Kansas Old Timers Fiddlers and Pickers.
In 1945, he married Betty Jean Eden in England. On Jan. 2, 1965, he married Lorene A. Brant in New Mexico. She died March 8, 1998.
Survivors include: a son, Alvin V., Greensburg; two daughters, Sandra M. Peterson, Boxholme, Iowa, and Vicky Hendricks, San Diego; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Zelma Wartraus.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with Pastor Steve Prieb and Father James E. Baker presiding. Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to service time Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Memorials may be sent to Ronald McDonald House or the Pioneer Club, both in care of the funeral home.

Jerome Younger
ELLIS - Jerome Younger, 91, died Feb. 19, 2000, at Hays Medical Center, St. Anthony Campus, Hays.
He was born March 27, 1908, at Ellis, the son of John and Anna Pfeifer Younger. An Ellis resident, he was a farmer and stockman. He played for bands in the Ellis area for many years.
He belonged to St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, both at Ellis.
On Sept. 7, 1927, he married Helen Lang at Ellis. She died March 23, 1997.
Survivors include: a son, Jerry, Kansas City, Mo.; four daughters, Maynetta Daily and Betty Herl, both of Ellis, Helen Schoenthaler, Wichita, and Judy Smith, Chapman; two sisters, Regina Zimmerman, Hays, and Theresa Werth, Denver; 23 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean Marie Younger.
Prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Wasinger Funeral Home, Ellis. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Ellis, with Father Kevin Weber presiding. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to the church in care of the funeral home.

Ethel Margie Zimmerman
STERLING - Ethel Margie Zimmerman, 94, died Feb. 18, 2000, at Lyons Good Samaritan Center.
She was born March 17, 1905, at Lyons, the daughter of John Benjamin and Daisy Minerva Hartle Cross. A long-time Sterling resident, she was a homemaker.
On Sept. 6, 1927, she married Weldon Zimmerman at Hoisington. He died Feb. 20, 1996.
Survivors include: a son, Wallace Lee, Garden City; a daughter, Sherry Bigcharles, Lyons; two sisters, Dorothy Carmichael, Meade, and Rowena Braman, Wichita; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Walter Leo; a daughter, Patricia Joy Zimmerman; two brothers, Bill and John Cross; and two sisters, Ruby Ludwig and Thelma Mollart.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sillin Funeral Home, Sterling, with the Rev. Robert Friesen presiding. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson.
Memorials may be sent to the Lyons Good Samaritan Center, in care of the funeral home.

Roy E. Pennell
SCOTT CITY - Roy E. Pennell, 85, died Feb. 18, 2000, at Park Lane Nursing Home, Scott City.
He was born Feb. 25, 1914, at Chautauqua, the son of William Edgar and Lillie Buckner Pennell. A lifetime Scott County resident, he was a farmer.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
On Aug. 17, 1945, he married Doris Mae Brooks at Garden City. She died May 19, 1993.
Survivors include: a sister, Ruby Friend, Lakin; three nephews; and three nieces.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City, with the Revs. Charles Friend and Neil Friend presiding. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, all at the funeral home. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to Park Lane Nursing Home or to a charity of the donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home.

Elva H. Glass
LARNED - Elva H. Glass, 94, died Feb. 17, 2000, at Larned Healthcare Center.
She was born Jan. 15, 1906, at Timken, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Holopirek Kraisinger. A longtime Plainsville resident, moving to Larned in 1994, she was a homemaker.
She belonged to the Methodist Church.
On June 23, 1934, she married Harry Glass. He died Jan. 24, 1974.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward, Arthur and Robert Kraisinger; and two sisters, Lillian Moore and Edna Wilhelm.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in La Crosse City Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to the Larned Healthcare Center, in care of the funeral home.

Bernie R. Pearson Sr
NEWTON - Bernie R. Pearson Sr., 68, died Feb. 17, 2000, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.
He was born July 21, 1931, at Newton, the son of John James and Beatrice Sue Guest Pearson. A Newton resident, he was a retired linesman from Williams Natural Gas Service, Hesston.He belonged to Halls Chapel AME Church and was a former member of Rising Sun Masonic Lodge No. 69, both at Newton. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1951 to 1953.
On July 20, 1958, he married Victoria Walters.
Survivors include: three sons, Bryan, Lansing, Bernie Jr., Pratt, and Eric, Newton; two daughters, Carol Lujano and Marilyn Pearson, both of Newton; a brother, John "Buddy, " Albuquerque, N.M.; four sisters, Barbara Mae Wright, Fredericksburg, Va., Frances Nadine Hudspeth and Norma Jean Pearson, both of Wichita, and Beatrice Yvonne Jones, Salina; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Shalom Mennonite Church, Newton, with the Rev. Phillip Kratzer presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, Newton, with the family greeting friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Newton.
Memorials may be sent to Central Homecare and Hospice, in care of the funeral home.

Howard M. Long
SCOTT CITY - Howard M. Long, 94, died Feb. 15, 2000, at Scott county Hospital.
He was born Dec. 21, 1905, at Pleasant Plain, Ind., the son of Issac M. and Amanda E. Wolverton Long. He graduated from Larned High School and attended the University of Kansas for a year. A Scott City resident since 1942, moving from Garden City and formerly of Larned, he was a farmer and became a shop foreman for Shallow Water Refining Co. in 1936. He worked part time repairing automotive electrical units from 1970 to 1996.
He belonged to First Christian Church, Scott City.
On Aug. 16, 1930, he married Ella C. Butler at Syracuse. She survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Richard, Scott City; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and until 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to the church in care of the funeral home.

Joyce Platt Reed
SAN DIEGO - Joyce Platt Reed, 81, died Feb. 16, 2000, at San Diego.
She was born Oct. 18, 1918, at Medicine Lodge, the daughter of Roy and Ellen Moffett Platt. She graduated from Medicine Lodge High School, the University of Kansas, the University of Denver, and received her master's degree from Missouri University, Columbia, Mo. A San Diego resident since 1983, moving from Topeka, she was a social worker in charge of foster homes for State of Kansas until her retirement.
She belonged to the Women League of Voters and the American Association of University Women.
On Dec. 24, 1942, she married William Reed at Pinebluff, Ark. He survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, William R., Colorado Springs, Colo., and Steven M., Littleton, Colo.; a brother, Mike Platt, Medicine Lodge; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, John M.; and a sister, Lorraine.
Cremation has taken place. Services will be announced at a later by Larrison-Forsyth Funeral Home, Medicine Lodge.
