Shirley R. Staples
PLAINS - Shirley R. Staples, 61, died Feb. 18, 2000, at her home.
She was born Aug. 20, 1938, in Beaver County, the daughter of Richard Berry and Ella Elmira Mohler Vanderpool. A Plains resident since 1994, moving from Kismet, she was a homemaker and paraprofessional for the Plains school system.
On Jan. 24, 1955, she married
Larry Sinclair at Raton, N.M. He died in 1983. On June 1, 1984, she married
John P. Staples at Kingsville, Texas. He survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Larry Scot Sinclair, Stevens Point, Wis.; two daughters, Virginia Beth Howard, Hugoton, and Carolyn DeAnn Deacon, Kismet; a stepson, Wesley Alan Staples, Topeka; a brother, J.W. Vanderpool, Meade; two sisters, Mary Lou Carrington, Henderson, Texas, and Freda Thomas, Beaver, Okla.; and numerous grandchildren.
Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Faith Bible Church, Kismet, with the Rev. Jerry Smitherman presiding. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Kismet Cemetery.

Hilarius F. Dinkel
HAYS - Hilarius F. Dinkel, 84, died Feb. 17, 2000, at St. John's of Hays Rest Home.
He was born Jan. 14, 1916, at Victoria, the son of Frank M. and Rosa Hertel Dinkel. A lifetime area resident, he was a farmer.
He belonged to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Hays.
On April 29, 1941, he married
Henrietta Leiker at Victoria. She died Jan. 15, 1996.
Survivors include: a daughter, Carol Brull, Hays; four brothers, Clarence, Hays, Edward and George, both of Victoria, and Father Harvey, Denver; 10 sisters, Julitta Dechant, Salina, Bertha Prewo and Viola Richmeier, both of Grinnell, Melinda Griebel, Mary Younker, Sister Paul Ann and Regina Dechant, all of Hays, Sister Francis Rose, St. Michaels, Ariz., Irene Scruggs, Vassar, and Rita Rohr, Wichita; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Fidilia and Viola Dinkel.
There will be a Sisters of St. Agnes prayer service at 4:30 p.m. Sunday and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., both at Brock's North Hill Chapel, Hays. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Hays, with Father Harvey Dinkel presiding. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Monday, all at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery.

Jerold D. Penka
HAYS - Jerold D. Penka, 57, died Feb. 17, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
He was born Aug. 4, 1942, at Pratt, the son of Bill and Omah Oeser Penka. He graduated from St. Joseph Military Academy, Hays, in 1960 and attended Garden City Junior College and Kansas State University. He worked for 24 years at Kansas State University Agricultural Research Center, Hays.
He belonged to Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and St. Mary's Knights of Columbus Council No. 6984, both at Hays, and the Fort Hays Stamp Club.
On Apr. 15, 1963, he married
Judith A. Weltz at Hays. She survives.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Patricia Drees and Pamela Channell, both of Hays; his mother, Healy; a brother, Fred, Healy; a sister, Janice Brooks, Healy; and four grandchildren.
Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary, at Cline's Mortuary of Hays. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays, with Father Donald D. Zimmerman presiding. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 10:45 a.m. Monday at the mortuary. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Hays.

Anna Endres
NEWTON - Anna Endres, 86, died Feb. 17, 2000, at Newton Medical Center.
She was born July 28, 1913, at Whitewater, the daughter of Frank and Rosa Adler Gronau. She attended Whitewater schools. She was a homemaker.
She belonged to St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Altar Society, Newton.
On May 5, 1942, she married
Ed Endres at Newton. He died April 25, 1984.
Survivors include: a son, David, Dodge City; two daughters, Mary Wonders, Newton, and Dorothy Randall, Mound City; two brothers, Bill and Martin Gronau, both of Newton; a sister, Katherine Overwaul, Wichita; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert and John; and a sister, Mary McNeill.
Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Newton, with the Rev. Ken Schuckman presiding. Funeral will be at 9 a.m. Monday at the church, with Rev. Schuckman presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, Newton. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Harold V. Smith
HALSTEAD - Harold V. Smith, 65, died Feb. 17, 2000, at Mount Hope Nursing Center, Mount Hope.
He was born Aug. 29, 1934, at Salina, the son of Paul D. and Mary Ruth Swengel Freeburg. He was a retired truck driver.
Survivors include: a brother, David Freeburg, Halstead; and two sisters, Judy Freeburg, Halstead, and Ruth Pannell, Wichita.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Halstead Cemetery, with the Rev. James Mardock presiding. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Kaufman Funeral Home, Halstead, with the family present to greet friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Archie E. Berry
LAKIN - Archie E. Berry, 91, died Feb. 17, 2000, at his home.
He was born May 5, 1908, at Denver. A Lakin resident since 1984, formerly of Denver and Montana, he was a core maker at General Iron Works, Denver, for 35 years.
He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, both at Lakin, and was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He married
Valine Cornforth at Denver. She died in March 1981.
Survivors include: a daughter, Shirley Heaton, Lakin; a stepdaughter, Delsie Bader, Grand Island, Neb.; a sister, Lola Edlin, Denver; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Archie E. Jr. and Robert.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Lakin Cemetery, with Pastor Robert Roberts presiding. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin.

Regina R. Wheeler
NEWTON - Regina R. Wheeler died March 29, 2000, at Newton.
She was born at Walton, the daughter of Jacob and Augusta Voth Tieszen. She graduated from Walton High School and Airline Hostess Training School for Trans World Airlines in Kansas City, Mo., in Dec. 1956. She was employed at Anderson Book Store, Newton, and Boeing Aircraft, Wichita, and was an airline stewardess for three years out of Kansas City and a homemaker.
She was past president of the Lady Elks and the Ladies Golf Association of the former Newton Country Club, was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, was selected as Young Republican National Committee Woman and Young GOP Representative to Kansas Women's Republican Club, was a page to the National Republican Convention in Chicago, and served as docent at Kauffman Museum at Bethel College, North Newton.
On Oct. 4, 1959, she married
David W. Wheeler at Newton. He survives.
Other survivors include: three brothers, Charles and Milton, both of North Newton, and Walter, Haysville; three sisters, Vernelle Wedel, Moundridge, Helen Sanders, Eugene, Ore., and Darlene Gilchrist, Hays; and numerous nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Lewis.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home Chapel, Newton, with the Rev. Donna Friesen presiding. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. There will be a private family burial.

Vernon 'Jack' Harrington
GARDEN CITY - Vernon "Jack" Harrington, 90, died March 28, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City.
He was born Jan. 17, 1910, at Ruby, Okla., the son of John and Allie Jenkins Harrington. He attended schools in Conway Springs. He lived in Ness City, Dighton and Scott City, moving to Garden City in 1942. He worked for 36 years as a truck driver for Smith Sand Co., retiring in 1983.
He attended First Christian Church, Garden City, and belonged to the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of Garden City.
On Dec. 12, 1929, he married
Effie Ray at Pratt. She died Dec. 28, 1987.
Survivors include: a son, Bud, Garden City; a daughter, Patt Erwin, Garden City; a sister, Rella Kostner, Del City, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City, with military graveside rites conducted by the Garden City Area Veterans Honor Guard. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. to service time Saturday at the funeral home.
