Linda Jane (Huston) Harrold

Linda Jane (Huston) Harrold, 60, of Olathe, Kan., formerly of Manhattan, Kan., passed away peacefully Tuesday, August l2, 2008 at her home in Olathe.

Linda was born December 3, l947, in Abilene, Kan., to Agnes Helen (Whitehair) and George Anthony Huston.

Linda attended St. Andrew’s Catholic grade school and graduated from Abilene High School in l966.

She attended Kansas State University for one year before marrying Captain Patrick K. Harrold on December 23, l967. Patrick was listed as MIA on December 4, l969, one day before the birth of their son, Timothy. Later, Linda returned to Kansas State University and completed her Master’s Degree in social work. She worked as medical social worker for 20 years at Irvin Army Hospital, Fort Riley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick; her parents, George and Agnes Huston and her mother-and father-in-law, Col. Arthur K. and Helen Harrold.

She is survived by her son, Timothy and daughter-in-law, Lorilyn, and her much loved granddaughter, Kendal, Olathe; one sister, Mary Jo Boor and husband, Leon, Abilene; four brothers, Larry and wife, Kathy, Prescott, Ariz.; Philip and wife, Anne, Omaha, Neb.; Mark and wife, Joan, Olathe, and Timothy, Salina, and l6 nieces and nephews.

The body was cremated. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 13, 2008, at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Abilene, Kan. Inurnment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery next to her beloved husband, Capt. Patrick K. Harrold.

Alice Sherman

Alice M. Sherman, 61, of Abilene, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka.

She was born July 22, 1947, at Batavia, N.Y., the daughter of George and Genevieve (Martin) Bailey. She grew to womanhood in the community of her birth, attended local schools and graduated from high school.

She married Charles Sherman on July 22, 1978 in Perry, N.Y. They made their home there until retirement and moved to Kipp, Kansas, in 1994.

She worked as an aid at the Craig Developmental Center in Sonyea, N.Y. She moved to Abilene in 2000 to make her home and was a member of the First Christian Church, Abilene.

Survivors include two daughters, Beth Draper and Lorrie Brooks, both of Perry, N.Y.; her mother, Genevieve Bauer of Enterprise; her companion, Dean Haggard of Abilene; two brothers, Bill Bauer of Kipp and Steve Bailey of Florida; a stepbrother, Daniel Bauer of Lima, N.Y.; and a stepsister, Debbie Patrick of New York; seven granddaughters and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, in 1998; her father, George; a son, Milton Sherman; her stepfather, Alfred Bauer; and a stepsister, Loretta Buckley.
A memorial service is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, Abilene, with Pastor Jason Kohler officiating. Inurnment will be in the Poeheta Cemetery, rural Kipp.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church, Abilene, and left at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 N.W. Third, Abilene.

Ray VanWickle

NEWTON — Ray Dean VanSickle, 56, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at his Newton home.

He was born March 14, 1952, the son of Ralph and Grace (Schwindt) VanSickle in Emporia. He grew up on a dairy farm near Olpe, attended a one-room school and graduated from Olpe High School and Emporia State University, before receiving a master’s degree from Wichita State University.

He married Christine Wells on Aug. 2, 1975, in Enterprise.

Mr. VanSickle taught at Santa Fe Middle School for 32 years, coached intramural teams and co-led Bible studies. Twice he was nominated for Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and was the 2007 Kansas History Day Teacher of the Year and served four years as Harvey County Republican Party chairman.

He attended Meridian Baptist Church in Newton and was a founder of Newton Christian High School, serving as board member and school treasurer.

Survivors include his wife, Christine, of the home in Newton; mother, Grace VanSickle of Emporia; daughter, Melodi Wood of Ringgold, La.; son, Brent VanSickle of Alton, Ill.; two sisters, Joan Sloan of Maryville, Tenn., and Carol Schaefer of Emporia; stepgrandmother, Eleanor Schwindt of Wichita; and six nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph VanSickle.

Graveside services are set for 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at the Cottonwood Cemetery in rural Emporia. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Meridian Baptist Church in Newton with Pastor Scott Kliewer presiding.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, at the Petersen Funeral Home, 215 N. Main, Newton, KS 67114. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Meridian Baptist Church camp scholarship fund, Newton Christian High School and the Union Rescue Mission in care of the funeral home.

Harry Dean McCall

CONCORDIA — Harry Dean McCall, 76, of Concordia, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, at Cloud County Health Center in Concordia.

He was born Dec. 15, 1931, in Concordia, the son of Ralph and Frances (Howell)?McCall.

He married Marceline “Tootie” Breault on Feb. 11, 1957, in Hebron, Neb.

Mr. McCall retired from Alstom Power, Concordia, and drove the senior citizen’s van. He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Concordia, and the Moose Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Tootie, of the home; three daughters, Deanna Metro of Concordia, Martha Zurmely of Abilene, and Debbie McCall of Concordia; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a great-grandchild.

A Mass of Christian Burial was at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Concor-dia. Interment was in the St. Concordia Catholic Church Cemetery in Concordia with graveside military honors provided by Concordia VFW Post No. 588 and Concordia American Legion Post No. 76.

Memorial contributions may be made to Concordia Senior Citizen’s Center or the church organ fund, in care of the Nutter Mortuary in Concordia.

Walter Hoffman Jr.

Walter L. Hoffman, Jr., 84, died Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at his home in Abilene.

He was born Dec. 13, 1923, in Enterprise, the son of Walter L. and Mary Catherine (Carpenter)?Hoffman. He grew to manhood in Enterprise and graduated in 1942 from Enterprise High School.

He entered the Army Air Corps and served two years in the Pacific Theatre before being discharged in 1945 with the rank of Tech Sergeant. He attended Kansas University, graduating in 1949.

He married Virginia Nordquist on June 7, 1953. Most of their married life was spent in Enterprise until moving to Abilene in 1986.

Mr. Hoffman was employed for 12 years with Ehrsam Manufacturing. He served as vice president of the Dickinson County Bank in Enterprise from 1968 until retiring in 1986.

He was a member of the Enterprise United Methodist Church, the Enterprise Masonic Lodge, the Abilene Rotary Club and was a former mayor of Enterprise.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia, of the home; one daughter, Jeremy Walker of Kansas City, Kan.; one brother, Reed Hoffman of Enterprise; and one sister, Mary McDonald of Scottsdale, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sarah Jane Hoffman, in 1968.
Mr. Hoffman was cremated. Private family inurnment services will be at a later date. No services are planned; however, the family would like friends to join them in viewing Walt’s garden from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, July 17, 2008, at 111 Moyne Drive, Abilene.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Dickinson County or a charity of the donor’s choice and left at or sent in care of the Danner Funeral Home, P.O. Box 758, Abilene, KS 67410.

Jane Ponton

SALINA — Jane E. Ponton, 71, of Manchester, died Sunday, July 13, 2008, at her residence.

She was born Sept. 29, 1936, in Junction City, the daughter of Martin and Norma (Roether) Schmedemann.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Debbie R. Ponton in 1980 at the age of 22; and two brothers Bobbie and Richard.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Jerry Ponton, Sr. of the home; sons, Jerry Ponton, Jr., Archie Ponton and Steve Ponton, all of Salina; two sisters, Judy S. Murrison of Junction City, and Lorna E. Putnam of Bennington; one brother, Wayne Schmedemann of Junction City; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is planned for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2008, in the White Cloud Cemetery, located at 3300 Ave. and Camp Rd., Manchester. The body will be cremated.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Dickinson County 511 N.E. 10th St. Abilene, KS 67410.

Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home, 500 S. Ohio, Salina, is handling arrangements.

Nora Hall

JUNCTION CITY — Lenora “Nora” Brilhante Hall, 81, died Sunday, July 13, 2008, at Geary Community Hospital in Junction City, after a brief illness.

She was born Jan. 6, 1927, in Fall River, Mass., to Bento Brilhante and Maria Grace Mello.

She married Donald “Red” Norman Hall on May 8, 1948, in Fall River, Mass.
She retired from Civil Service at Fort Riley where she worked at various positions, but she was best known as head seamstress. She lived in Junction City.

She was a member of St. John’s Parish, Episcopal Church, in Abilene.

Survivors include one son, Michael Hall of Orem, Utah; one daughter, Susan Bergstrom of Lindsborg; one sister, Helen Rebello of Fall River, Mass; six grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; three brothers, Jose, Manuel and Joseph; five sisters, Maria, Lena, Mary, Antoinette and Theresa;
Memorial services will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel, 806 Caroline Ave., Junction City. Cremation is planned. No visitation will take place.

Pearl McMillan

KIRKWOOD, Mo. — Pearl Lucile McMillan, 95, died June 4, 2008, in Kirkwood, Mo.

She was born Feb. 3, 1913, in Quinlan, Okla., the daughter of George and Nellie (Anthony) Emrich.

She was raised by her grandmother, Emilie Emrich of Longford, following the death of her mother. After her father remarried, he and his wife, Nellie Young, raised Mrs. McMillan. She graduated from Longford High School.

She married Earl Ira McMillan on Aug. 12, 1931. She taught all eight grades in a one-room school house before the birth of her first child.

Survivors include two daughters, Jean Morris DeWitt of Hollister, Mo., and Karen Young of Kirkwood; siblings, Arlene Smith of Perry, Lorene Cecil of Missouri, and Jim Emrich of Minneapolis; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; one great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; one brother, Ervin Emrich; and a sister, Dot Kiem.
