Edith I. Griffith
ASHBURN, Va. - Edith Irene Griffith, 89, was born at Jetmore, on June 6, 1915, and died Nov. 1, 2004, at the home of her daughter, Ashburn, Va.

She was the eldest child of Raymond Fishback and Gladys Avery Fishback, and was later joined by a sister, Ruth Viola Fishback. The family moved from the Jetmore area to make their home at Denver, Colo. After several years at Colorado, Edith, her father and new stepmother moved to California. In 1933, she graduated from Manteca High School, Manteca, Calif. As a graduation present, Edith traveled to Kansas to renew her family ties at Kalvesta.

Edith attended Garden City Junior College in 1933 and 1934. On Sept. 17, 1935, Edith was married to Cecil William Griffith at St. John. Before moving to Hutchinson, the Griffiths made their home on the Griffith family ranch near Burdett. While living at Hutchinson, two sons were born to the union. William Brice in 1937 and Robert Raymond in 1939.

In 1941, the family moved to Lewis, where Cecil continued his work with Standard Oil Company. Twyla Jean joined the family in 1944. Edith and her family felt very much at home in the Lewis community and became a part of the heart of Lewis.

After Cecil's death in 1966, Edith became a college student once again. She studied horticulture at Kansas State University for a year and then built a small greenhouse in which to satisfy her love of plants. Edith had been very active in her children's lives, yet always had time to pet a new plant. Her love and appreciation of nature was shared not only with her children and grandchildren, but many friends as well.

On Sept. 16, 1978, she married Jerome Weber of Schulte. She then made her home at rural Wichita, until the untimely death of Jerome the next year. Even though she was surrounded by a loving stepfamily, she ultimately moved back to her home at Lewis.

Edith enjoyed traveling and visited most of the United States as well as Europe, Africa, Australia and China. Her traveling was impeded by the gradual loss of eyesight. At that point, she and a couple of her close friends decided to make a move to Mennonite Manor at South Hutchinson. Although she missed the Lewis community, she adjusted to life where she did not worry about transportation, entertainment or the physical maintenance of a home. She enjoyed the friends at the Manor as well as the staff that she came in contact with. Even though her eyesight was becoming worse, she continued to participate in the many activities that were available to her at the Manor. In February 2002, sadness again entered Edith's life when her eldest son, Bill, lost his two and a half year struggle with Multiple Myeloma.

In November 2003, she moved to Ashburn, Va., where she made her home with her daughter, Twyla, and son-in-law, Bill Bradshaw. Again, she missed the friends she left behind, but did enjoy the day trips getting to know the Virginia countryside.

She leaves her son, Bob, and daughter-in-law, Eti, of Indonesia; her daughter, Twyla, and son-in-law Bill, Ashburn, Va.; her daughter-in-law, Mynie Lou, Hutchinson; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; her sister, Ruth Powell, Garden City; and a host of friends all over the world.

Memorial service will be held on Dec. 11, at 10 a.m. in the chapel at Mennonite Manor, South Hutchinson, and at 2 p.m. at the Christian Church, Lewis. Graveside service for immediate family will be held at a later time. Arrangements were handled by Loudoun Funeral Chapel, 158 Catoctin Circle, Leesburg, VA 20175.

Memorials may be sent to Mennonite Manor, South Hutchinson, or the local hospice.
