W. H. Oden
STERLING - W. H. "Bud" Oden, 94, died Dec. 13, 2004, at Lyons District Hospital, Lyons.

He was born April 17, 1910, at rural Sterling, a son of Arthur Edgar and Dora V. Goos Oden. A lifetime Sterling resident, he was a retired farmer/dairyman. He graduated from Sterling High School in 1927 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from Pittsburg State.

He belonged to United Methodist Church, was a 60-year member of Masonic Lodge, a 60-year member of Eastern Star and a 50-year member of Lions Club, all of Sterling. He was also a former board member of North and South Ashland School District, Rice County Dairy Association and Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity.

On March 2, 1934 he married Anita Whealy at Miami, Okla. She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Bob and wife Judy, Overland Park; a daughter, Fira Sue Stout and husband Ron, Sterling; a daughter-in-law, Jan Oden, Sterling; a sister, Annabell Huffines, Wynnewood, Okla.; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, A. H. "Buddy"; a brother, Robert; and a sister, Dorothy Ochs.

Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at United Methodist Church, Sterling, with the Rev. Nancy Goddard presiding. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Sillin Funeral Home, Sterling.

Memorials may be sent to United Methodist Church, Sterling Presbyterian Manor or Buddy Oden Memorial Scholarship Fund, all in care of Sillin Funeral Home.

Thomas W. Kastens
ANTHONY - Thomas Wayne "Tom" Kastens, 69, died Dec. 13, 2004, at his home, Anthony.

He was born Aug. 21, 1935, at Anthony, the son of Howard and Florence Smithhisler Kastens. A lifetime resident of Anthony, he was a retired farmer and past owner of Idle Hour, Anthony.

He was former president of the Anthony Fair Association and a former member of the Anthony Fire Department.

On Sept. 14, 1957, he married June Moore at Kingman. She survives.

Other survivors include: three daughters, Bonnie Dunn and Connie Copenhaver, both of Anthony, and Linda Smith, West Plains, Mo.; a brother, Howard, Anthony; two sisters, Mary Lou Chippeaux, San Benito, Texas, and Virginia Warren, Derby; eight grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Prairie Rose Funeral Home in Williams Chapel, Anthony. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, both at the funeral home. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Anthony. Memorials may be sent to Anthony Fire Department or Spring Grove Cemetery, both in care of the funeral home, 602 East Main, Anthony, KS 67003.

Tom N. Ramsey
LYONS - Tom N. Ramsey, 79, died Dec. 9, 2004, at his residence in Lyons.

He was born Aug. 30, 1925, at Vaughn, N.M., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Ramsey. A lifetime resident of Lyons, he graduated from Lyons High School and was a retired Realtor and co-owner of the Credit Bureau, Lyons. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, 35th Division, 137th Infantry.

He belonged to St. Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Council No. 7422, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, all of Lyons.

On Nov. 8, 1949, he married Maxine J. Jones at Lyons. She died July 3, 1989.

Survivors include: a son, Mike, Great Bend; a daughter, Sharon Phillips, Erving, Texas; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul Catholic Church, Lyons, with Father Thomas Leland presiding. Burial will be in Lyons MunicipalCemeterywith military honors by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Sillin Funeral Home, Lyons, with rosary at 7 p.m. Casket will be closed.

Memorials may be sent to VFW or St. Paul Catholic Church both in care of Sillin Funeral Home.

Ruth A. Dirreen
Ruth A. Dirreen, 62, died Dec. 14, 2004, at her home in Hutchinson.

She was born July 18, 1942, at Great Bend, the daughter of Eugene "Gene" and Mabel Ruth Meyer Wahaus. A lifetime Hoisington resident moving to Hutchinson in 2001, she was a homemaker as well as owner of the former Ruth's Flowers, Hoisington, and operator of the Redwing Store for a time.

She belonged to First United Methodist Church, Hoisington, and American Legion Auxiliary, Hutchinson, serving as past state president.

On July 31, 1960, she married Bill Dirreen at Hoisington. He survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Richard C., Olmitz, and Michael W., Raymore, Mo.; a brother, Bob Wahaus, Salina; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, Hoisington, with the Rev. Wayne Flanders presiding. Burial will be in Hoisington Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington, and 11 a.m. until service time Friday at the church.

Memorials may be sent to First United Methodist Church or Kansas American Legion Auxiliary, both in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.

R. Lenore Hare
R. Lenore Hare, 92, died Dec. 13, 2004, at Wesley Towers, Thorne Care Center, Hutchinson.

She was born March 15, 1912, at Timken, the daughter of L.H. and Sarah Elizabeth Carlyle Conard. She was a 1930 graduate of Larned High School and a 1935 graduate of Ottawa University. A resident of Hutchinson since 1960, she was an elementary teacher for 33 years, teaching the last 17 years in Hutchinson at Winans and McCandless schools. She retired in 1977.

She belonged to Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson.

On June 3, 1948, she married Marion B. Hare at Salina. He died Feb. 16, 2004.

Survivors include: two daughters, Patricia E. Leiker, Salina, and Sharon L. Henneke, Centerville, Ind.; a stepson, Gerald D. Hare, Youngstown, Ariz.; a sister, Marge Schropfer, Casper, Wyo.; four grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Conard.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Rev. Nick Warner presiding. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel's Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson.

Memorials may be sent to Trinity United Methodist Church, Good Samaritan Fund at Wesley Towers or Hospice Care of Kansas, all in care of the mortuary, 1219 North Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Marcille D. Aylstock
YORBA LINDA, Calif. - Marcille D. Aylstock, 84, died Nov. 7, 2004, at Yorba Linda, Calif.

She was born Jan. 2, 1920, at Offerle, the daughter of E.H. and Anna Brehm Amos. She spent most of her young life in the Offerle and Kinsley areas.

On Jan. 10, 1938, she married Lawrence Weaver. He died in 1968. On July 29, 1978, she married Frank W. Aylstock at Norwalk, Calif. He survives.

Other survivors include: a daughter; a sister; and a grandson.

Funeral was Nov. 13, 2004, at Yorba Linda, Calif. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Evergreen Cemetery, rural Offerle, with Father Nick Ferango presiding.

Michael A. Henson
MORRISON, Colo. - Michael A. Henson, 64, or Morrison, Colo., died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, in Anthem, Ariz.

Mike is survived by his wife, Melody, who is the daughter of Keith and Barbara Zody of Hutchinson; his sister, Beverly and brother-in-law Tom Zwetschke of Venice, Fla.; his son, Scott and daughter-in-law, Alecia of Anthem, Ariz., his daughter, Susan of Denver; and three grandchildren, Tanner and Tobin Henson and Karissa Misik.

born Jan. 25, 1940, in Paxton, Ill., to Roy and Flora Henson, Mike was a student and talented athlete at Paxton High School. After serving in the Navy, Mike graduated from Kansas State College, where he attended on a football scholarship. He later earned his master's degree at the University of Colorado.

In lieu of flowers, at Mike's request, and because of Mike's love of kids and sports, the family suggests memorial contributions to be made to Gold Crown Foundation, 150 South Harlan, Lakewood, CO 80226. Gold Crown Foundation educates youth and community through sports and enrichment programs and served 24, 000 girls and boys in 2004.

A celebration of the life of Mike Henson will be held on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 10 a.m. at West Bowles Church, 12325 West Bowles, Littleton, Colo.

Merle Skinner Sr.
LIBERAL - Merle Skinner Sr., 74, died Dec. 14, 2004, at Southwest Medical Center, Liberal.

He was born Jan. 20, 1930, in Stevens County, the son of Troy and Hazel Hageman Skinner. A 1949 graduate of Liberal High School, he was a longtime resident of the Liberal area and was a retired farmer.

He belonged to Lone Star Friends Church, Hugoton, and was a former member of Elk Lodge, Liberal.

On May 14, 1955, he married Isabel May McCord at San Antonio. She died Aug. 27, 1986. On May 19, 1991, he married Marie Wiles Clanton at Wichita. She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Sam, College Station, Texas; three daughters, Cindy Louis, Phoenix, Debbie Spence, Hutchinson, and Connie Niemi, Calif.; three stepsons, Jerry Clanton and Craig Clanton, both of Liberal, and Gary Clanton, Wichita; two stepdaughters, Karen Valles and Kayla Hall, both of Liberal; a brother, Don Skinner, Dodge City; a sister, Betty Peck, Wickenburg, Ariz.; 20 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Kay Skinner; and a great-grandchild.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Lone Star Friends Church with Pastors Dee Estes and Scott Rose presiding. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, with the family to greet friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, all at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Restlawn Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to Southwest Medical Center Auxiliary for Nursing Scholarships in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, 1212 West 2nd, Liberal, KS 67901.

Emma Faye Bergen
GREAT BEND - "Dilly" Emma Faye Bergen, 64, died Dec. 30, 2004, at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend.

She was born Jan. 10, 1940, at Great Bend, the daughter of Sam and Emma Farris Salem. She graduated from Hudson High School and from cosmetology school. A resident of Great Bend since 1964, moving from Hudson, she was owner and operator of Dilly's Restaurant.

She belonged to First Southern Baptist Church.

She married George Bergen. He survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Stanton, Hudson; two daughters, Rhonda Hughes, Great Bend, and Shelly Bottcher, Grandview, Mo.; a brother, David Salem, Hudson; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First Southern Baptist Church, Great Bend, with the Rev. Dr. Doyle Smith presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend. Interment will be in Great Bend Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Grandchildren's Educational Fund, in care of the funeral home, 1425 Patton, Great Bend, KS 67530.

Dorothy Lee Deewall
COLDWATER - Dorothy Lee Deewall, 82, died Dec. 30, 2004 at The Sheperd's Center, Cimarron.

She was born Nov. 2, 1922, at Vandalia, Mo., the daughter of Robert L. and Grace M. White Basnett. She attended school at Nauvoo Country School and Coldwater High School. She was a farmwife and homemaker.

A lifetime resident of Buttermilk, she belonged to Antioch Methodist Church, Buttermilk Saddle Club and Pike View EHU, all at Buttermilk.

On July 2, 1939, she married Leroy Deewall. He survives.

Other survivors include: three daughters, Sharon Adams, Haviland, Sondra Stull, Folsom, Calif., and Virginia McPhail, Cimarron; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert L. Basnett.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Christian Church, Coldwater, with Chet Mendenhall, the Rev. Kent Little and Pastor Doug Johnson presiding. Friends may call from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, Coldwater. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to Hospice of the Prairie, The Sheperd's Center or to Coldwater First Christian Church, in care of the funeral home.
